Originally, this Panama medical mission trip was bound for Isla Gobenador. For us, this trip was all planned, confirmed and ‘in the bag’, so to speak. While in El Guabal in July, we were paid a visit by a ranking official, Jaime, of the Panama Ministry of Health. Jaime watched carefully our processes and how our patients were treated. He was impressed by our kindness with patients and our medical ability. El Guabal sits on the edge of the ‘Comarca’ ‘administrative’ land assigned to the Indigenous Panamanian Ngöbe/Bugle tribes. is region is steep, undeveloped and has the poorest soil quality in the country. Many in the Comarca have never seen a physician, as we know it – including children. As we stood in the mud and rain that day, Jaime made a request of us using powerful words, “Please return to El Guabal in October and treat our abandoned people.” Jamie indicated that if we would return, he’d use the Panamanian government to get the word out throughout the Comarca in the next 90 days about our return. How could we say no? In one conversation, the October clinic that was ‘in the bag’ now is not. After a congregational appeal for recruitment help, it became obvious God was at work as the nearly unheard of occurred. None of us wants to admit it, and we sure don’t want to talk about it. We can pretend it’s not happening, but sooner or later, we all have to face it. WE ARE ALL AGING!We can live in denial, but if we do, we will probably find ourselves unprepared for the challenges that lie ahead. The nice thing is, we have another choice. We can OWN IT!If we decide to own it, we put ourselves on a proactive rather than reactive path. We can choose to be prepared to deal with the issues we might face as we age rather than wait until we are in the heat of the moment and in no shape to decide for our loved ones or ourselves. So, let’s REALLY OWN THIS! Join us for the fun as we take a look at what we can do to be ready, how we can help each other and what resources are available.

Going to college can be a stressful and chaotic time. The transition from a very active youth group and home support system to college where that may not be in place is a difficult one. This program will enable families or Sunday school classes to sign up to “adopt” a student. The student will be assigned randomly to a family or Sunday school class. A schedule will be provided so that the stress of deciding when to send something will be taken off the family or Sunday school class. Adopting a student is not time intensive; it involves sending a card or package three times a semester and then bringing an item to the finals box packing that will

be done as a group. This is not a huge financial commitment; it is, however, making a commitment to pray for and love these students who might be missing home. At the end of each semester we will gather as a group and create finals care packages. The way it will work will be that we will ask each family to bring a ‘Sam’s sized’ something, for example a large box of individually wrapped gold fish or popcorn. And we will share all of the items to create boxes for each student that we will then mail out all at once. Contact Taelor Mackin at [email protected] or 817.282.7384, x40 to find out more.

The past month has been filled with preparation, shopping for the dorm, packing the car, getting the final paperwork done for school. As we get ready to start the year and as students get ready to leave for school, it occurs to me that many parents will be experiencing this for the first time. For those who have done this before, I imagine those same emotions start coming to the surface again as parents start dropping their children off at school. Dropping off your child and driving away can be a very emotional thing, and the parents who are doing this need support as they go through this process. Here is a little devotional for those parents out there needing support. –Taelor Mackin 6:19 Program DirectorRead Psalm 139:1-18Thus says the Lord, “…As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you.”-Isaiah 66:1, 13 (NRSV)When children are young, parents are usually with them. When children aren’t with their parents,

they are usually with a trusted caregiver. If children wander into a dangerous situation or veer from acceptable behavior, someone is always there to pull them back. The constant supervision of someone older and wiser offers children help, guidance and correction. When children grow up and leave for college, parents often worry. Who will give them help, guidance, and correction when they need it? Who will take care of them when they are away from me?Parents and guardians can be comforted by the words in Psalm 139. They offer assurance that no matter where their children go, God’s hand will guide them and hold them fast. Parents often pray for their children daily, and in those prayers parents can know that God offers their children greater help, wiser guidance, and better correction than that parent ever could. No matter what, God is always with them. Prayer: God, we entrust to you those we love. Help us remember that you loved them before we even knew them. Amen.
