The Scope is for you residents fellows students and all learners of the Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) This Division of Education publication show-cases your colleagues programs local events and items of potential interest

I hope everyone had a good summer and found some time to spend with family and friends to recharge Fall is a great time to be in Wisconsin leaves are turning color the weather is cooler and the state birds (mosquitoes) are going away I welcome all of our new learners I hope by now you are familiar with the medical campus and city of Marshfield (By the way it is a great town to explore on a bicycle) During your training I encourage you to take an opportunity to also see some of the other communities that MCHS serves such as Minocqua or Rice Lake Please enjoy what this beautiful state has to offer

The COVID pandemic has certainly affected all of us Last year we were able to readily fulfill all the academic curricular requirements despite the necessary changes as a result of the pandemic This academic year will likely continue to have adjustments made for safe patient care and to meet all of the training re-quirements Thankfully we now have effective vaccinations Working together we can move past this challenge I would also like to remind you if you are hav-ing trouble adjusting to your new role or difficult circumstances please feel free to contact the Resident Well-Being Committee (RWBC) It is a confidential re-source

Marshfield Clinic Health Systemrsquos Resident Well-Being Committee was formed in 2004 to promote a healthy and humane clinical learning environment for our house staff RWBC provides a confiden-tial consultation service for residents an annual retreat to promote wellness and making connec-tions (yes even during a pandemic) annual health surveys and a website full of useful practical information to support resident well-being and success Check out what RWBC offers at this link

ACGME Well-Being Tools and Resources

In February 2018 the ACGME launched a new comprehensive Tools and Resources page for institutions programs resi-dentsfellows and faculty mem-bers to support and promote well-being in the clinical learn-ing environment The ACGMErsquos Task Force on Physician Well-Being Tools and Resources Subcommittee creat-ed this collection of materials and other references for resi-dents and faculty members as a resource for well-being and to help identify solutions that best meet local needs

Marshfield Clinic Health System will require its employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by November 15

ldquoOur Health System is about serving our Mission and living up to our values These vaccines are the key to stopping this virus and its essential we take this important step in providing the safest possible environment for our patients fami-lies visitors providers and staff said Dr Susan Turney CEO of Marshfield Clinic Health System

Turney added that the decision to mandate was based on the increase in COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin and increased spread of the highly contagious delta variant surging across the nation In the last two weeks alone the Health System saw COVID-19 hospitalizations triple and since the beginning of July nearly every COVID-19 patient the Health System hospitalized was unvaccinated

ldquoWe did not take this decision lightly It was one weve been discussing for the past several weeks But the time has come In order to be a leader in the community and provide the care our patients deserve we need to lead by example Turney said

Thousands of Health System employees including nearly 100 of physicians voluntarily received vaccinations The Health System continually educates all staff by sharing vaccine resources and giving the opportunity to directly ask lead-ers and researchers questions through interactive educational sessions that discuss vaccine research safety and efficacy

New public website highlights focus on health equity diversity and inclusion

As part of the Health Systems strategic focus on addressing sources of health inequity in our communities as well as promoting the values of diversity and inclusion inside and outside our facilities a new public-facing website has been launched The site is intended as an introduction to our efforts in HEDI (health equity diversity and inclusion) from why focusing on these issues is crucial to progress the System has made already on these fronts HEDI is part of our Health System Quality and Safety First strategic imperative (QSF1C)

ldquoThis is really going to be a hub for everyone to see what we are up to in this area and to hold ourselves accountable for keeping these issues at the forefront of our thinking said Jess Gaffney manager of the Systems HEDI efforts ldquoI think having the statements we do on this site from top leaders and providers is also a powerful illustration of our commit-ment to this work

Marshfield Clinic is a host site for the Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM) program In WARM students spend their last two and half years at Clinic centers in order to complete their training rotations

WARM is a collaborative effort of the University of Wisconsin School of Medi-

cine and Public Health (UWSMPH) and affiliated state campuses like Marshfield

Clinic Collaborators have made WARM a student-centered and innovative rural

medical education program much like the traditional MD program
