December 2019 STS-AIChE Chair’s Letter – Tom Rehm
My year as Chair is coming to a close. A metaphor from the game of pool is apropos:
When I saw my Dad play a game of pool with a WW2 buddy in the ‘50s on a little toy
pool table that us kids got for Christmas (eight siblings), with marble sized pool balls,
I got the itch to play. I managed to sneak into a pool hall in the early ‘60s and I’ve
now played for about 55 years now. The metaphor: There’s a saying in pool that
‘every shot makes somebody happy’. I am happy to make a shot. My opponent is
happy when I miss a shot.
My year as Chair is coming to a close. I am happy I did it. I hope some of you are
happy I did it. I am now happy to pass the baton to Mark Harkness. Is Mark happy?
Don’t know. In any case, dear Mark, 2020 will be a memorable year for you. I will be
there to help you any way I can. I will be happy to do so.
If you haven’t yet signed up for the Murder Mystery Dinner on December 5th, please do so. I’ve never been to
something like this, but I’m told it’s a blast. Mary and I will be there. I hope to see you there, too. We will figure out
whodunit.
Yes, I must give one last climate solutions report.
I was at the Annual Meeting, solely for the purpose of promoting AIChE’s Climate Solutions Community. Several bits
of good news related to roll out of the community:
Chairs of 24 meetings and sessions allowed me five minutes to promote the community. There was a lot of
interest, particularly from the youngest generation. The largest group I spoke to were presidents of student
chapters. Altogether I spoke to about 700. A student chapter in India is now engaging with the community.
I and Mark Holtzapple, our March 2019 STS after-dinner speaker, met with 2020 AIChE President Monty Alger
for breakfast on November 11. Monty is very supportive of the community.
Community ByLaws are being written, and nominations for a community Managing Board are being put forward.
I have been advised that The Climate Solutions Community could be operational in six months; better than
the five years rollout I was told in April this year.
The program for our April 4th Climate Solutions Symposium at the University of Houston Student Center Theater
is final; see information in this newsletter. I appreciate the support of the Engineering, Science &
Technology Council of Houston in co-hosting this event. This symposium will be promoted to thousands of
engineers, scientists, college students, high school students, and members of climate change concerned
organizations throughout the greater Houston area. I hope to see you there.
Before exiting, I must thank our 2019 Executive Committee and our Volunteer Leaders.
Carlos Salamanca, Past Chair. Thank you, Carlos, for providing me guidance through the year.
Mark Harkness, Chair Elect. Mark, you and I spoke and emailed to/fro dozens of times this year. You have
become a friend. I appreciate your support and will support you in 2020. I do want another game of pool. I
think I could do better given another chance.
Yurika Diaz Bialowas, Treasurer. Wow are you an Energizer Bunny! Do you ever slow down?
Debra McCAll Haney, Secretary. My first memory of you was at an STS dinner at Brady’s Landing in something
like 2016. I was deep in thought about something, while I was at the podium making an announcement
about something else. I know I came across like a plate of cold fish. I saw you soon after and you
sarcastically, but with a smile, called me “Sunshine.” Thank you for that, as I have tried to be more chipper
ever since. And thank you for doing a great job as ExCom Secretary.
Page 3 Volume 120 Number 5
December 2019 STS-AIChE Chair’s Letter – Tom Rehm
Babak Rafienia, Position 1, Education. Babak, I haven’t gotten to know you very well.
However, whenever I see you you’re always wearing a smile, i.e., you don’t need a
“Sunshine” shot across the bow. Thank you for doing a great job at workshops this
year.
Sheena Reeves, Position 2, Outreach. For those that don’t know, Sheena lives
somewhere in West Texas, at least an hour and a half from anything happening in
Houston. Sheena invited me once to speak to chemical engineering seniors at
Prairie View A&M. That presentation became the beginnings of a one week course I
taught four times in Nigeria over a two year period. Sheena, thank you for doing a
great job with our student chapters.
Meghan Spivak, Position 3, Communications. I am writing this Chair Letter now because
Meghan sent an email to the ExCom saying “you all better get something to me for
the December newsletter!” Meghan, thank you for patiently herding us cats this year. And yes, by cats I mean hippies
from decades ago, e.g., me and Tom Menn.
William Pittman, Position 4, Human Resources. Earlier this year, William’s wife Shandy gave birth to their son Sam who
was very premature. My understanding was that it was touch and go for mother and child, a very difficult time for his
young family. Shandy and Sam are doing well now. I met Shandy at our November dinner meeting. Throughout this
year, including that very stressful period, William has done a wonderful job in his role on the ExCom. Our networking
lunches continue to be successful, benefiting both our members in transition and our membership in general.
In addition to our nine 2019 Executive Committee Members, we have several others who must be mentioned. The South Texas
Section cannot operate successfully without you: Tom Menn, Matt Kolodney, John Middleton, Emily Jackson, Carol Schmidt,
Dale Embry, Talia Sanchez, Connor Schonert, Vic Edwards, Mickey Reeves, Dave Silarski, Dennis Griffith, Johnny Huynh,
Joshua Bordin, Yougen Kong, Lucas Von Ruff, Trevor Rice, Adam Bialowas. With even that long list, I certainly have stumbled
and forgotten someone. Thank you!
Remember! There is no December STS dinner, as we will all be occupied solving the whodunit on December 5. Please join me
and Mary at the Hilton, 400 Dallas Street, Houston.

Sponsorship of the South Texas Section – now on a rolling 12-month basis
In past years, sponsorship was tied to a calendar year. Those who became sponsors later in the year had less
exposure than full-year sponsors, but at the same cost as full-year sponsors. A proposal to the STS Executive
Committee, for sponsorships over a rolling 12-month period, was approved in mid-January. The 12-month rolling
period will be based on the date of sponsorship application.
2020 Sponsorship Opportunities with the South Texas Section
Promote your company at eight South Texas Section dinner meetings over the next twelve months. Our dinners are held on all sides of the
greater Houston metro area – west, east, north and south – significant coverage to the membership of one of the largest local sections of
the AIChE.
Also, sponsorship-packages are available which combine South Texas Section sponsorship with sponsorship of the 2020 Southwest Process
Technology Conference, the April 2020 Energy Forum and/or the May 2020 Water Forum.

Congratulations to Chemstations, Inc. Brewing Team for winning the 2019 AIChE Brewing Competition Best Logo Award! The team members consisting of three young professionals Eric Hubatch, Carla Lara and Trevor Rice; along with the company’s Senior Engineers Yurika Diaz Bialowas, Greg Head, Aaron Herrick, and Alejandra Peralta, brewed a Milk Stout and a Saison Belgium style beer. The team named their brews Black Cat and Chimpmonk respectively. Their Milk Stout brew is a classic dark malty ale with hints of chocolate and coffee, this brew takes advantage of the lactose sugar to balance the bitter flavors with sweetness and lends to a creamy mouthfeel. The team’s Saison brew is also known as a Belgian farmhouse ale; the Belgian yeast strain used for fermentation brings a distinct banana aroma and spiced flavors like coriander. Similar styles of beer have been brewed by monks for centuries which inspired the award winning logo. The team looks forward to representing The South Texas Section of AIChE in the 2020 Beer Brewing Competition.

STS-AIChE Season Pass Information
2020 Season Pass Available Now!
The STS-AIChE Season Pass offered the convenience of a single sign-up and single payment for all eight
technical meetings in the 2020 season. Season Pass holders also received priority sign-up for all special
events.
Season Pass holders receive a significant savings when comparing the on-site cost of the dinner meet-
ings. No need to continue to monitor when meeting registrations are open. Save the hidden costs of mul-
tiple transactions and tracking the payments and reimbursements, if applicable.
The 2020 Season Pass costs $189 and is available for purchase HERE!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
As a Season Pass Holder do I need to register for each dinner meeting?
No, there is no need to register or RSVP for the individual meetings once you have made your payment to
become a Season Pass holder. We do however ask that you sign in at the registration table during the day
of the event at the meeting venue.
What if I cannot attend a dinner meeting?
Guests and visitors are always welcome. Feel free to send someone else in your place and just let the
people at the registration table know of the substitution.
What if I cannot attend the meeting and cannot find a substitute?
Even the most dedicated members cannot make every meeting. The season pass is priced assuming that
you will miss a meeting. If you can provide at least a one week notice, by e-mailing the Chair-Elect at sts-
[email protected], we can give you a guest pass for the next meeting. That way, you can invite your
boss to the next meeting to see what you missed!
I am a big supporter of the section, but I don’t want my name posted all over the web. Can I opt-out of the
publications?
Yes, just let us know and we will not put your name on our list so that you can continue to fly under the
radar. You always have the option of hand writing a name tag.
Will I still get in if I forget my name tag at home?
Yes. We keep a master sign-up list at the door. Patrons are at the top of the list!
I normally sign up in advance. Am I still saving money?
Yes. The Season Pass is eight meetings for the price of seven. You will also save the time and effort of
multiple payments.

South Texas Section Corporate Liaison Program
Volume 120 Number 5 Page 19
The intent of the program is to have a liaison contact at companies in the region that employ a large group of Chemical
Engineers, so that the liaison can pass on information on upcoming events, and encourage attendance at STS-AIChE
Events.
This program will make it easier for Chemical Engineers to learn about meetings and events that may interest them, and by
providing a “personal touch” and intra-company networking opportunity, overcome potential fears or objections to partici-
pating. The program will also provide a potential opportunity for employees to be recognized as leaders within their compa-
ny.
Responsibilities and benefits are listed in the table below.
In early 2016, Travis Fixmer, a Process Optimization and Design Engineer with Huntsman Performance Products, devel-
oped an intranet website which promotes our Section and its activities within Huntsman. He offered to be a resource to
individuals who would like to do the same. If you would like to promote our Section, Travis can provide you with guidance
on how to proceed.
Others in our section send intra-company emails promoting the South Texas Section. This can be easily done by simply for-
warding the STS monthly meeting notice email to employees in your company.
There is no cost for liaisons or companies to participate. Participation as a liaison is completely voluntary, and companies
can transition to a new liaison or end their participation at any time.
If you have any questions, please contact Tom Rehm at [email protected] or 832-331-6491.
