The annual Christmas in the Village celebration is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6, with activities for the entire family, from the wildly popular chili cook-off to a colorful lighted winter parade — now in its ninth year — in the evening, to visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The day’s events kick off at 10 a.m. with a large craft show that runs through 4 p.m. at Cass City Junior- Senior High School. Dozens of crafters sign up to showcase their wares each year, offering visitors a wide variety of Christmas gifts and other items. Last year roughly 60 crafters signed up for the show, matching the annual holiday extravagana’s most success- ful year ever, in 2011. Those planning to stop at the show are encouraged to donate a non-per- ishable food item for the Eastern Michigan Food Bank and be entered into a drawing for door prizes. Once again, the Cass Theatre will be showing a free matinee both this Saturday and Saturday, Dec. 13, courtesy of Thumb National Bank. The doors will open at 1:30 p.m. and the movies will start at 2 p.m. The theatre will be showing “ICE AGE: The Meltdown” this week and “Marmaduke” the following Saturday. Another popular attraction is the Christmas in the Village Chili Cook- off. Now in its 11th year, the event is sponsored by Knights Insurance Agency, Cass City, and pits the area’s best chili chefs against each other with a year’s worth of bragging rights at stake. Here’s how it works: cooks at local businesses will be preparing their best chili recipes — from mild to wild. Visitors can wander through town from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., tasting each one after purchasing a ticket to participate in the event. You can buy your ballot to vote for your favorite chili at any participating business for $4 (adults) and $1 (kids age 12 and under). Trial slated for Huron Co. woman charged in fatal drug overdose Sanilac County business targeted Police looking for armed robbery suspect by Tom Montgomery Editor The Huron County woman charged in the fatal drug overdose of her boyfriend in March 2013 is scheduled to go to trial April 21. That was the date set in Huron County Circuit Court, where Amanda I. Vanvalkenburgh, 23, is charged with a felony count of delivery of a con- trolled substance – causing death. Vanvalkenburgh, of Elkton, previously waived her right to a preliminary examination in Huron County District Court last month. The March 27 incident took place at an apartment complex in Elkton, where Vanvalkenburgh allegedly injected her boyfriend, 19-year-old Ryan A. Shemka, with methadone, resulting in an overdose. According to Huron County Sheriff’s Department reports, deputies were dispatched to the complex to investigate a report of a man who was uncon- scious and not breathing. Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson said dispatchers worked with occupants of the apartment to initiate CPR. An Elkton Ambulance crew arrived and took over the life-saving efforts, but Shemka was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. “It was learned that the victim…who had been temporarily residing at the apartment, had fallen asleep with his girlfriend in a closet used as a bed- room,” Hanson said. “This was apparently after the two had spent several hours intravenously injecting each other with methadone and consuming alcohol.” The investigation by deputies and the Elkton Police Department resulted in the request for a search warrant for a Colfax Township residence, where offi- cers seized several methadone pills and a small amount of cash. Bad Axe attorney Walt Salens has been appointed to represent Vanvalkenburgh, who could face up to life in prison if convicted. Her bond was initially set at $3,500 (10 percent cash), but Huron County District Court Judge David B. Herrington later revised the amount to $10,000 (personal recognizance) at the request of Prosecutor Timothy J. The male subject then left the store and was observed by wit- nesses to be running southbound along M-25, and then ran westbound near Gardner Line Road.” Witnesses told police that the victim appeared to be in his late teens to early 20s, about six feet tall with a skinny build. Rabbit Tracksby Clarke Haire

(And anyone else he canget to help)

There’s no shortageof giving in village

“Does anybody really know what time it is? Does any-body really care?”

The idea of time and running late have been an issuesince at least 1969 when the band, Chicago, sang thissnappy tune. The lyrics came to mind this morning as Iwas lying in bed. I’d just rolled over to enjoy a luxuri-ous nine long minutes before the alarm rang when myhusband asked, “You know your clock is wrong, don’tyou?”

I sat up with a jolt. The red flickering lights said 6:21.“It’s really about 6:37,” he said.

“Since when?” I asked, suddenly very wide-awake.“At least a couple days now,” he said observantly.I truly hadn’t noticed. I only set my alarm when I have

an early morning meeting, which is a rarity. Otherwise,I subscribe to the freer practice of “I wake up when oneof the kids pulls on my toes” routine of life.

It’s not that I don’t value clocks. I’ve got one on mybedside table. There is another on my husband’s side. We’ve got one in each of the kids’ rooms. There are fourin the kitchen, two on the computer, one in my van. And,of course my smartphone is up to the minute when itcomes to time.

Still, I never really know what time it is. None of ourclocks are set exactly the same. Even the ones in thekitchen. One will read 7:29 when the other across theroom says 7:32. This may not seem momentous, butthree minutes can be a deal breaker when you are run-ning late for the school bus.And a 16-minute discrepancy on your bedside clock is

equal to an eternity by anyone’s early-morning stan-dards.

When I am on my A game, I set my clocks about fiveminutes fast. Even though I’m aware 5:05 really means5:00, I operate like I don’t know and believe this littletrick helps me get to where I need to go on time. Someof the time. I don’t pretend to understand the psycholo-gy of it. I’m just going with the flow and hoping not tobe too late (versus slightly so).More often than not though, time has its way of getting

away from me. I don’t think I’m alone. Who hasn’traced to an early morning work meeting or from work tothe fifth grade music program hoping to get there beforethe final song is complete? I know I’m guilty of partici-pating in similar true-life reality challenges at leasttwice a week.

If I do find myself with a handful of extra minutes, Ifeel the necessity to fill them with a quick run to the postoffice or a speedy zip through the car wash. Or maybe Ijust check my email or update an app. Whatever theactivity, I am always challenging time, pushing the lim-its and trying to squeeze an extra second or two out ofevery minute.

In other words, running late. So when I suddenly lost 16 minutes this morning, I was

in a familiar spot. I dove out of bed and into the shower

faster than you can say “snooze button,” and didn’t givemy alarm clock another thought.Until precisely at 6:30 this evening, when it finally went

off. So much for me and clocks.

You don’t have to tell Cass City area residents

about giving — just ask any family in the area

whose friends have organized a benefit for them in

a time of crisis or illness.

That spirit of giving locally is evident throughout

the year, but especially during the Christmas sea-

son, and we’re confident the community will come

through as it always has for those who are strug-

gling financially and in need of a helping hand.

You don’t have to be wealthy to make a difference.

Helping others could mean as little as donating a

few dollars to Revive Ministries in town to help

fund the organization’s regular food pantries, or

dropping off a new toy or article of warm clothing

at Curtis Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Cass City,

which annually serves as the Cass City Rotary

Club’s Christmas for Kids headquarters.

Perhaps you have an elderly neighbor who could

use a ride to the grocery store, or whose sidewalk

needs to be shoveled and salted?

Or maybe you have a couple of free hours in your

weekly schedule and could volunteer for a food or

toy drive in the area.

Speaking of giving, we’d like to tip our hats to the

Cass City business community for its generosity in

making the local chamber of commerce’s

Christmas in the Village celebration a hit every

year.

This year’s event is slated for Saturday, Dec. 6,

and we hope everyone will turn out for a full day

of activities ranging from a craft show, chili cook-

off and a free matinee at the Cass Theatre, to the

lighted Christmas parade and community gather-

ing featuring free goodies and visits with Santa

Claus.

The celebration is made possible by contributions

from several area businesses and organizations,

and don’t forget all of the hard work that goes into

the event, most of it courtesy of a small army of

volunteers.

As we said, Cass City knows all about giving. It’s

a tradition built on caring, compassion and a will-

ingness to share and go above and beyond when-

ever a need arises.

It’s what makes this community a wonderful place

to live, especially during the holidays.

Bert Althaver, former Cass City Citizen of the Yearhonoree, says the next Chamber of Commerce AnnualDinner gala, where the coveted award becomes public, isslated for February 7.

Accordingly, nominations for both citizen of the yearAND junior citizen of the year (new format this year)will be accepted until Friday, December 12.Nominations should be placed in an envelope anddropped off or mailed to the Cass City Chamber ofCommerce office, located inside the downtown munici-pal building at 6506 Main Street.

Hey newsstand readers – today is the day. After sever-al big shopping days, Michiganders have the opportuni-ty to shift the focus away from consumerism by makinga charitable donation on what has been dubbed#GivingTuesday.Bill Gesamen, director of stakeholder engagement with

the Michigan Nonprofit Association, says this is thethird year for the international day of giving back. Whilemany people have traditionally waited until the very endof the year to make donations, Gesamen says charitieshave turned #GivingTuesday into a day to make donateddollars go further.

With the holiday season upon us, the Michigan StatePolice is encouraging citizens to celebrate responsible. Ifyour holiday party involves alcohol, designate a soberdriver before the party begins. In addition, party hostsare asked to make sure all guest leave with a sober driv-er.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol endangerseveryone, from the driver to the passengers, to otherpeople on the road,” said Community Service TrooperMark Swales of the Caro Post. “For safety sake, pleasedon’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.”To reduce traffic crashes and fatalities this holiday sea-

son, law enforcement officers will be on the lookout fordrunk drivers. In addition, officers will be making suremotorists obey laws including using a safety belt andfollowing speed limits.

“The holidays are a time to enjoy gatherings withfriends and family,” said Swales. “Together, we canmake sure everyone celebrates safety.”

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, one of everythree home Christmas tree fires is caused by electricalproblems. Here are some basic fire safety reminders toavoid these tragedies:

*Always unplug lights, both inside and outside, beforeleaving the house or going to bed.

*Carefully inspect lights for worn or frayed cordsbefore use.*Do not purchase a dry tree of one that’s losing its nee-

dles. Set tree away from heat sources and exits, andwater it daily.

*Have at least one smoke alarm on every level of yourhome, especially outside of sleeping area.

“Balloons Today.” Local artist BethSpencer, whose work can be seen inthe publication’s December issue, couldn’t be more pleased. Not onlydid the magazine print photos of oneof her balloon designs, the publica-tion’s editor asked the Cass City res-ident to recreate that design at theNational Association of BalloonArtists’ annual convention, March25-28 in Las Vegas. “I’m very excit-ed. 35 YEARS AGO (1979)It was on Dec. 3, 1978, that throw-

away soft drink and beer bottlesbecame a has-been in Michigan. Onthat date and presumably forever-more, consumers had to pay depositson their bottles and return them ifthey wanted their money back. Asfor those local merchants surveyedwho have to take bottles back, nowthat a year has gone by, their opin-ions of the law ranges from accept-ance to hatred. Major complaintsconcern the space needed to store thecontainers and failure by some cus-tomers to wash them out beforereturning them. They do agree thatroadsides look cleaner as a result ofthe returnable law. “It’s not as bad asI had expected, but it’s getting pro-gressively worse,” said IGAFoodliner owner Harry Lenda of theeffect of the law.

Don Smith, 29, is the new Tuscolacounty magistrate. He assumed theposition Nov. 26, taking over forJoan Maki, who resigned. KISS? Not when

it comes to DNR

Reporter’s notebook

by Tom MontgomeryEditor

One of the first things they teach you in journalism is the importanceof KISS when you write.

Nope, I’m not talking about a PDA (public display of affection) oranything related to Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and outlandish facepaint. The acronym stands for “Keep it simple, stupid.” It’s also adesign principle stating that most systems work best if they are keptsimple, rather than made complicated; therefore, simplicity should be akey goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided.

Guess the folks at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources(DNR) never heard of it.

Maybe my level of stupidity is just increasing with age, but have youfigured out the latest hunting regulations/license structure?“Okay, so I have to buy a ‘base’ license before I can buy a deer license,

and I can’t hunt deer with it but I can shoot rabbits and squirrels? Oh,I have to then buy a deer license, which will allow me to take one deer. What if I then want to buy a second license? I see, if I want two licens-es, I have to buy them in a combo deal first instead of opting for thelicense that allows me to shoot one deer…”

Seriously, folks? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The last time I took a look at the

state’s fishing regulations, I pretty much gave up trying to figure out inwhat body of water I could attempt to catch trout, with what bait, atwhat time of the year, without being led out of the woods in handcuffs.

Need proof? Here’s the DNR’s intro to understanding inland troutsalmon regulations and maps:

“Color coded maps have been developed to assist anglers in locatinginland waters that contain trout and salmon and the regulations thatapply. See pages 46-50 for a description of regulations concerningstreams, gear restricted streams, and inland trout lakes. Stream Types1-4 and gear restricted streams are differentiated on the maps by color(Type 1 are green, Type 2 are yellow, Type 3 are orange, Type 4 areblue, and gear restricted steams are red). Please note that some gearrestricted steams have split regulations. Any lake regulated by Type(A-F) will be labeled in red text and the lake will appear shaded in darkblue or will appear as a blue dot on map…”

What the….? Yeah, that’s a good idea, publish instructions like theseand expect people (well, guys) to read them anymore than they do thepaperwork that comes with that new lawnmower or leaf blower.Okay, I realize this is all supposed to be about wise stewardship of nat-

ural resources, but is it really necessary to create this sort of confusingmess AND charge an arm and a leg to hunt in your own backyard?Hopefully, most sportsmen will try to make sure they’re enjoying theirsport legally.

But I wouldn’t count on it any more than I would predict that thestate’s education “experts” are likely to come up with an easy-to-under-stand and score standardized test featuring clear-cut objectives andwhich doesn’t penalize well-performing schools. Having results thatserve a useful purpose wouldn’t hurt, either. Anyway, it seems to me the DNR would have much better luck getting

more folks outdoors, hunting and fishing, if they just simplified thingsa little (or a lot).

In the meantime, I’m seriously considering taking up another hobbywhere the regulations are a little easier to understand, like building myown space capsule for a solo manned flight to Mars.

Probably the brilliant record andrapid advancement made by Col.H.C. Sweeney, who visits his sister,Mrs. E. Simpson, of NovestaTownship occasionally, was partlyinfluential in the enlistment of histwo nephews, James and HardinSimpson, sons of Mrs. Simpson, inthe U.S. Army. Both boys attendedhigh school in Cass City. Hardinenlisted last September and is sta-tioned at Camp Jackson, SouthCarolina, where more than 5,000officers and enlisted men are alreadydomesticated. 100 YEARS AGO (1914)The ladies of the Presbyterian

church are very much pleased withthe result of their Christmas bazaarand feel that their finances have beengreatly increased through theseefforts. The excellent line of fancywork which the ladies displayed, along with their home made candy, the supper served Thursday eveningand the entertainment of Fridayevening, netted them $175.00, whilethe rummage sale which they haveconducted gave them $125.00returns. Thus the ladies in less thantwo weeks added $300.00 to theirtreasury.

Robert Warner sold five spring pigs7 months and 10 days old Saturdaywhich averaged 276 pounds inweight. The largest one tipped thescales at 320 pounds and was proba-bly the largest hog at that age everpurchased here. For the five pigs hereceived a check for $89.60, and hadthe local buyers been able to shiptheir stock to the Buffalo markets,Mr. Warner’s check would havecalled for a larger amount.

When John Crocker telephoned theChronicle that Paul Bien and RayMeiser had been lost while huntingnear his farm, the boys planned toget something on John. They have itnow. John, they assert, had startedhome from viewing a new piece ofland he recently purchased when hecame across a fox trail. This he fol-lowed for some time and finally dis-covered he couldn’t locate himself. The boys claim he didn’t find hishome until late that afternoon andthat he was lost on his own farm.

For Americans, the Christmas sea-son began last Friday. But not in themore traditional Christian churches, like my own Lutheran Church. Athome Bing Crosby and theCarpenters are already playing, butin worship we are still waiting.

We use these next few weeks as atime to get ready for Jesus’ arrival. In these weeks we take extra time to

hear God’s Word about why Jesuswas born in the first place. We con-sider what human sin and selfishnesshave caused in the world. We alsotake a clear look at our own sin – the

wrong we do to God and to otherpeople.

By remembering our sin we under-stand what a great gift God the Sonhas given us by being born as ahuman baby, living a perfect life andsuffering our sin’s punishment on thecross. He did all that so He can for-give us and give us eternal life. We also use this season to get ready

for the next time Jesus will come toearth – the Last Day when He willend the evil in this world and estab-lish a new and forever-perfect heav-en and earth for everyone who

believes in Him. And we celebrate that in this time of

waiting for the Last Day, Jesus stillcomes among us. When His word isread and preached, and when HolyCommunion is celebrated, Jesus ishere, today, to forgive our sins anddraw us close to Himself.

Whether you follow this tradition,or not, I encourage all of us to takesome time away from all the partiesand feasts of the season to look in thespiritual mirror and see our sin. Themore we understand just how muchJesus has saved us from, the more we

IT MAY LOOK warm and toasty on Michigan’s sunrise side, but Old Man

Winter has wasted little time reintroducing Thumb residents to bitter cold

and brisk winds. Weather forecasters were calling for quiet conditions the

rest of this week, but chances are good the Thumb can look forward to anoth-

er white Christmas.

“PEOPLE may doubt

what you say, but they

will believe what you

do.” – Lewis Cass.

Blast from the past

Cass was a pioneer, politicianEditor’s note: The following histor-

ical account of how Cass Cityreceived its name was compiled byarea historian Jim Ware, who grant-ed the Chronicle permission toreprint his article.

Some references claim that CassCity got its name from the CassRiver, which was named after theTerritorial Governor Lewis Cass, butarticles in two early Cass CityChronicle newspapers state that thetown was named after Gov. Cassdirectly.

The very first merchant in the areawas a lumberman by the name ofNathaniel Clerk who had a store tosell supplies to other lumbermen onMain Street where the Quality Auto

Parts store now stands, and he iscredited with suggesting the name. The story goes that his two daugh-ters, Annis and Mary, suggested it totheir dad, and he suggested it to thetownship board, and it was accepted.

Lewis Cass was born in 1782 inExeter, N.H., the son of CaptainJonathon Cass, who had fought inthe Revolutionary War and was withGeneral George Washington in theencampment at Valley Forge. Oneday, when Lewis was still a veryyoung lad, the new President GeorgeWashington came to Exeter on a tourof the new country and actuallyshook hands with Lewis. GeorgeWashington and his father were hislife-long personal heroes and rolemodels. Lewis attended the Phillips

Exeter Academy and became itsmost educated student at that timeafter completing seven years ofschooling.

Jonathon Cass applied for a landgrant and got one in the SouthernOhio Territory, which was still thefrontier at that time. The familymoved to Marietta, Ohio. Shortlyafter that, Jonathon was commis-sioned as a major and was assignedto serve under General AnthonyWayne. He would have fought in theBattle of Fallen Timbers, but suf-fered a kick from a horse, resultingin a broken leg. His leg never didheal right and it ended his militarycareer. He then became a home-steader on his property, which wasnear what is now Zanesville, Ohio. While Jonathon was away, the fam-

ily stayed in Marietta and Lewis con-tinued his studies, reading every lawbook he could buy or borrow, and healso worked in two different lawoffices while still a teenager. Heeventually set up his own law officein Zanesville and became a circuitrider lawyer. He was the first certi-fied attorney in Ohio after it becamea state in 1802. As a circuit rider, hetraveled around the state, fordingrivers and streams, and even camp-ing out when accommodations couldnot be found. Wherever he went fora court case, people would comefrom miles around to witness thecourtroom drama as one of the onlyforms of entertainment available atthe time. Court was held in taverns, barns or any other accommodationsthat were available as courthouseshad yet to be built.

Lewis married Elizabeth Spencer, and during their marriage they hadfour children – three daughters andone son. Their names were Isabelle,Mary, Matilda and Lewis Jr. Lewiswas a very dedicated family man, buthis profession required him to beaway from home more than he liked.Lewis became very involved in theMasonic Lodge in Ohio, and laterstarted the first lodge in Michigan. Aplaque in his honor stands in theCass City Village Park, commemo-rating his contributions as a memberof the Masons, a fraternal organiza-tion of high personal ethics.

Through his personal connections,Lewis learned of a conspiracy byAaron Burr, the former vice presi-dent under Thomas Jefferson, andthe one who killed AlexanderHamilton in a duel, to start a resist-ance movement in the LouisianaTerritory. Lewis became a party toBurr’s arrest. For Lewis’ involve-ment in the Burr affair, he wasnamed as a federal marshal for Ohio.He was then also commissioned as acolonel in the Ohio Militia alongwith Duncan MacArthur underGeneral William Hull, the territorialgovernor of the Michigan Territory,to fight in the War of 1812 againstBritish forces.

The British had a system of enlist-ing the Indians to fight on their sideby giving them gifts, whisky, andpaying them for the scalps ofAmerican settlers they killed. Oneof the Indian chiefs was namedTecumseh and had led a raid againstsettlers near the Raisin River, nearwhere Monroe, Mich., is today, andmassacred them. “Remember theRaisin” became the battle cry. Cassand MacArthur were livid becausethey knew they could have prevailedagainst the British.

Lewis was called to Washington totestify, and during the trip he becamevery ill. His illness caused him to

lose all his hair and, from that timeon, he wore a wig. Not being a veryhandsome man in the first place, including having a large mole on hischeek and being overweight, this didnot help his political image. After his testimony, he was promot-

ed to brigadier general of the U.S.Army and assigned under GeneralWilliam Henry Harrison of Ohio tocontinue the battle after his surrendersentence term had expired. Togetherwith the success of Admiral OliverPerry in defeating the British onLake Erie, and their victory in theBattle Thames (Chatham, Ontario, today) the war was won. ChiefTecumseh was killed in the battle.Along with the British being now outof the picture, this helped to dampenthe warring attitude of the Indians.

Lewis was then named the new ter-ritorial governor by President JamesMadison for the Michigan Territory, which at that time includedMichigan, Wisconsin and the easternpart of Minnesota over to theMississippi River. Detroit becamethe center of the territorial govern-ment, but was poorly equippedbecause the war had left the infra-structure and crops destroyed, thetroops withdrawn, and the Indiansnot acclimated to accepting the newAmerican authority. It didn’t helpthat the first surveyors sent to thestate got discouraged and left aftertaking a short sample and declaringthat Michigan was swamp and mos-quito infested, and unfit for settle-ment. This upset Cass greatly and hepetitioned, and petitionedWashington to send another survey-ing team and supplies to supportcivil order and survival. He waseventually successful and began togovern, establishing the state intocounties, townships and villages in asimilar fashion he knew from hisknowledge of Connecticut. He wasalso successful in setting up thestate’s educational system and sup-porting the beginning of theUniversity of Michigan.

Cass was probably most noted forhis ability to negotiate with theIndians. He took the time to learntheir culture, and hated the way theBritish had used them. He was a tee-totaler himself and very aware ofwhat “fire water” would do to theIndians, and did his best to keep itaway from them.

He developed a reputation amongthe Indians as being an honest andfair negotiator, but also a brave andstern one as other stories can tell. The Indians affectionately referredto him as “OsKotchee”, meaning “fatbelly”. Many people, in hindsight, may think he took advantage of theIndians, but he could see that the set-tlers were not going to stop comingregardless, and greater conflicts werebound to come if some accommoda-tion was not reached. In 1819 Cassnegotiated the Saginaw Treaty, which freed up the territory whereCass City is now located, for settle-ment.There’s much more to be told about

our town’s namesake, but too littleroom in one (article). Cass later heldseveral important posts in federalgovernment, and even ran for presi-dent within the Democratic Party, narrowly losing to James K. Polk, who went on to become the presi-dent. Before Gerald Ford becamepresident, Lewis Cass was the onlyMichigander to have his statueplaced in the Statuary Hall of theCapitol Building in Washington,D.C.
