The 86.7% of the votes Geingob received in the presidential election

outstrips the level of popularity that both the founding President Sam Nujoma and President Hifikepunye Pohamba enjoyed in Namibia's previous presidential polls, and also shows that Geingob has received substantially broader support at the polls than his party did.

At the same time, Swapo's share of the vote in the National Assembly election has increased to 80% - also the highest level of support the ruling party has received from the Namibian electorate.

He has received a heavy responsibility with his electoral victory, Geingob said in brief remarks made after the announcement of the election results.

“I'll be the President for all the Namibian people,” he said, adding that it would be his mission to ensure that no Namibian is left out.

ECN chairperson Notemba Tjipueja declared the Prime Minister as having been duly elected as Namibia's next President after announcing that Geingob had scored 772 528 of the total of 890 738 votes cast in the presidential election.

Geingob's closest rival, DTA leader McHenry Venaani, received 44 271 votes (4.9% of the total), followed by RDP leader Hidipo Hamutenya, with 30 197 votes (3.4%).

Nujoma won the 1994 presidential election with 74.4% of the vote, while his support increased to 76.8% in the 1999 election. In 2005 and again in 2009, Pohamba was elected President with 76.4% of the vote.

“Democracy remains incomplete without losers,” Venaani said in a short concession speech after Tjipueja's

announcement of the results. “Democracy is a cycle of winning and losing.”

Namibia's democracy is safe and sound, he said.

Addressing Geingob directly, Venaani said: “As leader of the official opposition-elect I will keep you on your toes.”

By winning 715 026 of the 893 643 votes cast in the National Assembly election, Swapo will fill 77 of the 96 seats for elected members of the expanded NA from 21 March next year.

While the ruling party has risen to a new height of popularity and dominance, opposition parties have seen their share of the votes in the NA election drop. The DTA of Namibia, the All People's Party, and the Workers Revolutionary Party have managed to buck this trend, though.

For the Rally for Democracy and Progress and the Congress of Democrats, the 2014 elections had been a disaster.

Five years after the RDP won eight seats in the National Assembly with 11.3% of the vote in the 2009 election, the party has suffered a major setback at the polls, with its share of the vote falling to 3,5% (31 372 votes). The RDP will have only three seats in the next NA. The number of votes that the RDP received this year is about a third of the 90 556 votes it had won in the 2009 election.

The CoD, which entered the National Assembly with seven seats after winning 10.05% of the votes cast in the 1999 NA election, will not be returning to parliament next year. Its share of the vote

Mozambique is one of three countries that stand out for their growth in Africa, a continent that will become increasingly important in economic terms in the coming years, according to consulting firm Deloitte.

Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to a report just published on the economic outlook for the continent, is expected to expand 50 percent by 2019, to US$3.7 trillion, driven by the growing middle class and an increase in private consumption.

“An annual growth of about 8 percent would add US$1.1 trillion to Africa’s GDP by 2019, with Ethiopia, Uganda and Mozambique among the most rapidly expanding markets,” the document said.

A recent report by Standard Bank Group points to significant growth of the African middle class in the coming years – 40 million homes by 2030, in 11 of the region’s economies, but in a more pronounced way in Nigeria.

As in the recent case of the Benguela Railroad, funded by China in Angola, this type of infrastructure is removing vast regions of the content from previous isolation by linking production areas to markets and creating wealth and jobs.

Deloitte said companies need “long-term strategies” for Africa, a continent where the business world

Mozambique among the three African economies with highest growth by 2019

still faces legal and bureaucratic barriers, along with growing opportunities in tradable goods, ranging from mobile phones to luxury products.

“Where there are challenges, there are also opportunities to innovate. Given the growth potential that the continent offers, Africa’s business opportunities may outweigh the risks,” the consultancy said. The mobile phone market is one that has amongst the highest growth potential, with a total penetration growing to an expected 97 percent by 2017, 25 percentage points more than current penetration.

This increase, Deloitte said, is of over 334 million mobile phone subscribers.

The services sector in Mozambique is currently experiencing strong growth, benefiting from the growth surge that the country is receiving, particularly in production facilities and export of raw materials such as coal and natural gas.

The Economist Intelligence Unit projects that economic growth in Mozambique will accelerate to 7.3 percent in 2014 and 7.8 percent in 2015, driven by the coal industry and investment in infrastructure, but also by “strong growth” of the telecommunications, industry and financial services.

more than 11 million visitors and our aim is to continue to grow these numbers by constantly enhancing every aspect of Dubai's destination offering, making our city the top choice for all types of travellers from across the globe. Emirates and DTCM both continually showcase Dubai through every possible touch point - whether at international and industry events, sponsorships or through marketing campaigns. We believe our new campaign will contribute to enhancing Dubai's appeal to even more visitors across the globe.'

Across print, broadcast and outdoor media, the 'See you in Dubai' campaign will highlight the familiar as well as the unexpected

experiences that Dubai has to offer, conveying the spirit of this exciting global city that is always evolving.

While most visitors are familiar with Dubai's iconic landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall, the emirate provides plenty more attractions and experiences - ranging from a host of desert activities, to beautiful beaches and a wealth of water sports, to a growing arts and culture scene, and amazing cuisines that span the globe.

imploded to only 0.38% this year. For the DTA, 20 years of

electoral decline have been halted and reversed this year, but the party is still far from the levels of support it had during the 1990s. The former official opposition, which had two seats in the NA after the 2009 election, in which it scored only 3% of the vote, won 42 933 votes (4.8% of the total) in the NA election this year. That gives the DTA five seats in the next NA and the status of official opposition. The APP's electoral fortunes have also improved since 2009, when the party won 1.35% of the votes cast in the NA election. After having only one member in the NA over the past almost five years, the APP will have two MPs in the next NA. The party received 20 431 votes (2.3% of the total votes) this year.

The UDF, with 18 945 votes (2% of the total), won two seats in the next NA (2.4% in 2009, resulting in two seats), while Nudo won two seats on the back of 17 942 votes (2% of the vote, compared to 3% and two seats in 2009).

The Workers Revolutionary Party will, for the first time, have members in parliament from 21 March 2015. The leftist party, which drew 13 328 votes, has been allocated two seats in the NA.

Although they did not win enough votes to reach the NA seat quota of 9 308 votes, Swanu, the United People's Movement, and the Republican Party have been allocated one seat each as a result of the system of allocating seats to parties based on the number

of surplus votes received by the parties. Swanu received 6 354 votes, the UPM 6 353 votes, and the RP 6 099 votes.

About 72% of the country's 1 241 194 registered voters cast their votes in the NA election.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIESMali is very opulent in

investment opportunities, some of which have yet to be discovered. The flow of Foreign Direct Investment has been increasing steadily over the last years. Agriculture: It is the footing of the economy and therefore remains a significant sector. It remains the main source of income for over 80% of the population Mali. The land available, predominantly proper to agriculture, livestock and forestry, occupy nearly 46 million hectares. Of a total of roughly 12 million hectares of cropland, only 3.5 million hectares are currently being exploited. The potential of irrigable land is projected to be more than 2 million hectares, more than half of which can be

FLOURISHING ECONOMYThe enormous majority

of Malians are engaged in farming, herding, or fishing. Cotton and peanuts are the country's only noteworthy cash crops, with millet, rice, corn, sorghum, and vegetables being the major food crops. Agriculture and herding have been progressively hurt by the encroaching desert.

Mali's industries are largely limited to the processing of farm commodities, construction, and the manufacture of basic consumer goods. Gold, phosphate, kaolin, salt, limestone, and uranium are mined, and the country has wide-ranging unexploited mineral resources, including bauxite, iron ore, manganese, tin, and copper. Payments from Malians working abroad are also a significant source of income. The Manantali Dam on the Bafing River (a Senegal tributary) produces hydroelectric power.

Mali’s economic freedom score is 55.5, making its economy the 122nd freest in the 2014 Index. Its score has reduced by 0.9 point from last year, mostly reflecting declines in property rights and five other economic freedoms that outweigh a prominent gain in investment freedom. Mali is graded 21st out of 46 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and its score is below the world average.

gravity-driven. The cotton industry

epitomizes nearly 15% of GDP. Mali is the largest cotton producer and exporter in West Africa. Nevertheless, less than 1% of cotton production is managed locally.

Consequently, despite the cost of factors of production, the textile industry is an investment prospect. Since 2003, Malian textile can be exported duty to the large US market under the AGOA.

Mali’s sugar production is educed from sugar cane farming on the irrigated perimeters of the office du Niger. The national production is not adequate to meet the demand. Given the prospective extension opportunities for sugar cane farming, the construction of new sugar factories would allow to meet local demand and export the surplus to regional and European markets.

Mali enjoys the most significant livestock population in West Africa. Stockbreeding plays a vital role in Mali’s economy. Mali has a comparative lead in the area of skins and hides, with a specialization index of 3.4 for raw hides and 2.91 for tanned hides. This is due to specialization, predominantly in the hides of small ruminants, and to the loyalty of its export markets.

Mali has one the most plentiful fisheries in the Sahel with a

potential of more than 200.000 tons. Thanks to the rivers Niger and Senegal, Mali provides 40% of the fresh water fish production in West Africa. Mining: Accounts for a noteworthy part of the national economy, demonstrating 12% of GDP. Without being an ELDORADO, Mali was always seen as a country endowed with an honest mining potential. This was supported by a large number of historical references as well as established artisan mining activity, which is still being carried out.

Gold represents Mali’s primary export and the country is the third-biggest gold producer after South Africa and Ghana. Mali’s

commercial mines have produced over 10 Moz of gold since 1990, and their measured and indicated resources total approximately 25 Moz. There are presently seven active commercial mining operations in Mali: Sadiola, Yatela, Morila, Syama, Loulo, Tabakoto and kalana.

In addition to gold exploration stated above, companies are also vigorously involved in exploration for diamonds, iron ore, base metals, bauxite and phosphates. Oil & Gas: A good prospective for oil and gas has been deep-rooted by existence of possible reservoirs embodied by Ordovician sommital sandstones, Devonian and Ordovician basal sandstones. Upper infracambrian quartz tic and fractured lime stones and Cambrian and

upper infracambrian quartz tic sandstones. Marhed in the compression zone against the threshold of Foum El Alba; Bouera, a horst with E-W direction; and Yarba, a normal anticline without reserve faulting, with an area of 180 km2 and a vertical closing of 200 to 300 m.

The Authority for the Promotion of Oil Exploration in Mali (AUREP), a division of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water, is in charge of validating oil and gas exploration and to participate in the negotiations of related agreements and conventions. Since 2004, the Law N° 04-037 and its application decree n° 04-357, protect the

investor, guarantees investment and allows for two types of agreements: a production sharing convention, and a Concession Convention. Energy: Mali has a significant potential in energy resources. In 2006, Malian authorities have readjusted the National Energy Policy to make it more coherent and efficient. Its guiding principles are: decentralization, liberalization, programme approach, participatory approach, competitiveness, cross consistency and public-private partnership.

The solar radiation is about 5 to 7 kWh/m2/day and is well scattered on the national territory. The wind speed in the Sahelian and Saharan areas of the countries ranged from 3 to 7 m/s, on annual average.

Ethiopian Airlines is a foremost African airline. It has every single reason to be delighted of itself for competing globally. The largest

airline in Africa, has recently started three weekly flights to Doha, Qatar as of 2nd December 2014. Ethiopian flights to Doha will bring the total number of Ethiopian international destinations across five continents to 84. The city will mark the 10th Ethiopian destination to the Middle East.

With this new flight, travelers to and from Doha will relish suitable and seamless connectivity options, with minimum layover in Addis Ababa, thanks to Ethiopian extensive network in Africa covering 49 destinations. Expedient connections will be available to and from cities such as Johannesburg, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Lagos, Accra, Dakar, Dar-es-Salaam and Entebbe.

Amongst its achievements, I would highlight few of them for our readers. It has been voted as the Best Foreign Airline of the Year from Africa at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 9th Annual Awards held on 21 November 2014.

It was entitled for the African Airline of the Yearby the African Airlines Association at its 46th Annual General Assembly held in Algiers between 9 and 11 November 2014. Ethiopian Airline was crowned Airline of the Year for its extraordinary results in 2013, steady profitability, and sound strategy, which has empowered it to forge win-win partnerships with fellow sisterly African airlines.

They have lately proclaimed the beginning of Mobile Short Message Service (SMS) information system for easy access to flight information and cargo tracking for customers starting November 21, 2014.

The service has made it stress-free than ever for Ethiopian customers to check flight status and cargo shipment figures by sending a mobile short code SMS text to 8611 messaging number.

It has endorsed Ethiopian customer to check flight availability, departure/arrival time, flight status and cargo shipment tracking information instantly. Persons welcoming passengers on Ethiopian flights can now check the exact arrival time of expected flights with simply texting 8611 with "f" followed by the flight number or "r" followed by the route they are expecting.

The Airline was commenced with a Pan-African sight of linking the newly-independent countries of the continent. It grew as Africa itself grew, politically and economically. While most other airlines engrossed on connecting African countries

Kenya’s march into the cyber age has in some areas been nothing short of spectacular, and a number of service providers have of late teamed up to hold workshops and seminars to show the travel trade how to make the most of the new tools, apps, and programs available to help them build and grow their businesses.

Only yesterday another innovation launched when Ezy Tkt launched their platform from which non-IATA travel agencies can now sell on tickets with their mark-up already built in.

The new solution has created an instant buzz and keen interest to use the latest technologies to stay ahead of the competition. The system will give subscribers access to competitive airfares to sell onto others under their own brand at their own convenience.

3G Direct Pay, the market leader in Kenya for secure online settlements, will be the payment solution for EzyTkt so the agents can have a full package of applications that includes the best available payment platform. Powered by Travelshoppe, Ezy Tkt was incorporated in Kenya last year and is based in the new business hub of Westlands.

Anyone with a passion of travel now has access to the tools to start or grow their travel business. Using the latest technology, Ezy Tkt allows agents to book and mark up flights to sell onto clients and still be more competitive than any traditional travel agent.

Ezy Tkt is part of Travelshoppe. With over $1million US Dollars in annual in spend Travelshoppe negotiates discounted airfares which are 100% passed onto signed-up agents.

All you need to do is fill our form for registration. As soon as agents have registered, a dedicated account manager will make contact to answer any questions they may have.

Ezy Tkt is the first platform of-its-kind in Kenya, making it possible to sell travel without Galileo or Amadeus training.

Signed up agents enjoy the flexibility to use the platform as often or as little as they like. There are no penalties for not using the system.

There are no set-up costs and travel agents can create their branded travel agency without incurring any set-up fees.

This latest development will no doubt pitch IATA-approved agencies against those which chose, for whatever reasons, not to go down that road, as competitive fares, a key element in a client’s decision whom to book with and whom to entrust their money to, are now available by using the keyboard of a computer, from any location in fact, to do business.

Competition has always been good for the consumer in terms of lower prices and better services, and Ezy Tkt’s market launch will no doubt stir up things even more.

New airline ticketing innovation for non-IATA agencies

Mumbai is the 6th most populated city in the world and represents a key strategic addition to our growing route portfolio. As a popular gateway to India, we have optimized our schedule to offer seamless two-way connections from Mumbai to cities such as Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad, simplifying the travel options for both inbound and outbound passengers.

In connecting Africa to India and China, Ethiopian Airline is an ideal of South-South cooperation.

to their former colonial capitals, Ethiopian crossed the continent, connecting Anglophone, Francophone, Arabophone and Lusophone countries, breaking down those false boundaries inherited from the colonial era.

Ethiopian airlines established an ethos of self-reliance, teaching its own pilots, technicians and crew, and also furnishing a centre of excellence where airline specialists from across Africa could come and gain the skills and expertise they needed. The management refused to take the existing industry models at face value and as a substitute developed their own analysis of how best to build a strictly outstanding airline. For many years, Ethiopian Airline declined offers of partnership from bigger airlines, assertive enough that its own business model would outshine that of its rivals, and it should only negotiate with other airlines on equal terms.

By a coincidence of history, Ethiopia Airlines and the Organisation of African Union (OAU) have alike life stories. The two institutions were born during Africa's independence era. Both, from their inception, embarked upon bringing Africa and Africans together: physically and politically. Both were determined by a vision of a combined continent.

Ethiopian Airlines predicted the flow of the developing economies, not just in Africa, but also in Asia and Latin America, and is now riding that wave. I believe it is one of the first airlines to link countries around the equator, from Brazil, through Africa, to South and East Asia. In Brazil - the country with the second largest number of citizens of African descent after Nigeria - it is an icon of the rise of the global South.

In connecting Africa to India and China, Ethiopian Airline is an ideal of South-South cooperation. For Africans, the Airline has become more than a concrete asset that can carrying them around the continent reliably and safely. It is also a symbol, an institution in which we can take pride and an example to emulate.

The success story of Ethiopian Airlines amazes those who question Africa's ability to run modern institutions efficiently, profitably and sustainably. Its record demonstrates how Africa can engage and succeed in a globally-competitive and capital-intensive industry.

Ethiopian Airlines is more than a business: it is also an emblem of what is possible; a globally modest commercial enterprise that was shaped and has grown in Africa, combining continuity and novelty in an extraordinarily successful mix.

Ethiopians have every reason to be proud of their national carrier. But, across the continent and beyond, Africans are also delighted of their continental airline.

Ethiopian Airlines is truly an African flag carrier, an evidence to the potential of Pan Africanism. I am assertive that as Africa continues to rise over the next 50 years, Ethiopian Airlines will continue to expand, flourish and contribute to leading the way.

It is generally recognized that the development of relevant skills is an important

instrument for improving the productivity of any developing country. Education and skills can open doors to economically and socially rewarding jobs and can help the development of small informal-sector businesses.

Ultimately, developing job-related competencies among the poor, the youth and the vulnerable is recognized as crucial to progress in reducing poverty. The development of job-related skills is, therefore, not only part of the country’s human resource strategies but also of their economic-growth and poverty-reduction strategies.

The Local Enterprise and Skills Development Programme (LESDEP), is a specialized employment creation programme that seeks to provide the requisite

skills, tools and training for the youth which eventually renders them self-employed and self – sufficient.

The late President of Ghana, His Excellency John Evans Atta Mills launched the LESDEP Programme on the 27th April 2011 with the aim of creating jobs and rapid sustainable national development. During the launch, the President stressed on the importance of the initiative as playing a critical role in the Government’s efforts to develop the human resource base of the country, and he was very optimistic that LESDEP would provide the needed support for the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises to play an active role in the drive for national economic growth.

Since its inception, it has received great support from the Government of Ghana. Under the auspices of the Ministry of

LESDEP

Local Government and Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, the programme has made significant strides in creating jobs, providing the requisite training and providing tools and machineries for numerous beneficiaries across the country to kick-start their various businesses.

In collaboration with the Municipal and District Assemblies, LESDEP has boosted entrepreneurial skills among the youth in alleviating the canker of unemployment in the country and instilling the urgency of self-employment, self-sustenance and youth empowerment.

LESDEP is definitely not superfluous and no mere replication of any other programme. It is a well thought-out, well-planned, a well-equipped programme that will surely create

jobs that pay, to enable people be highly skilled to be self-reliant to be able to contribute to the national economy.

Since its inception, LESDEP has created a staggering number of 2 lakhs direct and indirect jobs with a good number of youth benefiting in diverse ways across Ghana from the programme. It has repositioned itself as the pathway to an exciting, new era of business development and entrepreneurship after achieving unparalleled milestones in terms of dispersal of technical and entrepreneurial skills among the youth within the country.

Mr. Timothy D. Mawulawoe is in his sixties and hails from the Ve community in the Volta Region. Twenty two years ago, he suffered from a devastating fire incident which culminated in the amputation of his legs. For Timothy, all seemed lost until

LESDEP opened in the Volta Region. Now he is extremely proud to be in charge of a booming business and being able to provide for his family and most importantly, provide employment for other unemployed persons.

Another proud beneficiary of the programme, Alhassan Zakaria who is a 36 year old man was one of the persons who took frantic steps to register with the programme and train under a module. He went through the procedures, processes and training of LESDEP, and after a successful completion of the training, he was provided with the equipment he requested for, a minivan dumper (bola taxi) to commence his business. Mr. Zakaria is now a proud owner of a minivan dumper (bola taxi) that plies along the Madina market and its environs for refuse collection.

1. Cures a fever Tulsi has very potent germicidal, fungicidal, anti-bacterial and anti-biotic properties that are great for resolving fevers. It has the potential to cure any fever right from those caused due to common infections to those caused due to malaria as well.

2. Beats diabetes Leaves of holy basil are packed with antioxidants and essential oils that produce eugenol, methyl eugenol and caryophyllene. Collectively these substances help the pancreatic beta cells (cells that store and release insulin) function properly. This in turn helps increase sensitivity to insulin. Lowering one’s blood sugar and treating diabetes effectively.

3. Protects the heart Tulsi has a powerful anti-oxidant component called Eugenol. This compound helps protect the heart by keeping one’s blood pressure under control and lowering his/her cholesterol levels. Chewing a few leaves of tulsi on an empty stomach everyday can both prevent and protect any heart ailments.

4. Beats stress The leaf also has powerful adaptogen properties (also known as anti-stress

Petroleum jelly lip balmFor a basic lip balm you could use safe ingredients like petroleum jelly, food colour for that tinge and any preferred juice or extract for a natural flavour.Steps: Take a scoop or two from some petroleum jelly and put it in microwave bowl. To this add some juice of any preferred flavour. You could squeeze in some fresh strawberries or even orange or opt for some rose

extract and blend it well with the jelly. You could add some food colour if you prefer to. Heat this mixture for less than a minute and put it in a tin container or any spare face cream bottles if you have them. You can apply this on the lips as and when required.

Honey, coconut oil and essential oil lip balm Honey and coconut are exceptionally mositurising and ensure that your lips stay hydrated. These are key ingredients that will enhance your lip’s health. Besides, a few drops of coconut oil will help keep the moisture in your lips well intact just the way petroleum jelly does. This lip balm will also prove beneficial with the vitamin E content

agents). It helps sooth the nerves, regulates blood circulation and beats free radicals that are produced during an episode of stress. People who have high stress jobs can chew about 12 leaves of tulsi twice a day to beat stress naturally.

5. Dissolves kidney stones The holy basil being a great diuretic and detoxifier is great for the kidneys. Tulsi helps reduce the uric acid levels in the blood helps cleanse the kidneys, the presence of acetic acid and other components in its essential oils helps in breaking down kidney stones and its painkiller effect helps dull down the pain of kidney stones.

6. Beats cancer With strong anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties tulsi has been found to help stop the progression of breast cancer and oral cancer (caused due to chewing tobacco). This is because its compounds restrict the flow of blood to the tumour by attacking the blood vessels supplying it. Have the extract of tulsi every day to keep these conditions at bay.

7. Helps to quit smoking Tulsi is known to have very strong anti- stress compounds and is great to help one quit smoking. It helps by lowering the stress that may be involved in trying to quit smoking, or stress that leads to the urge to smoke. Thrill, surprise and amazement. That is the mood that greeted guests at the official launch of Ansoni Luxury Events.

The newest entrant on the local private and corporate events scene treated guests to a colorful cocktail do, at the Rubangura Luxury Apartments in Kimihurura.

The event that was supposed to kick off at 7p.m did not, until much later—owing to a slight drizzle. Amidst the rain, the Ansoni Luxury Events team bravely went about their work, lighting candles and bon fires, ushering in guests, serving drinks and nibbles and sprinkling flowers on the floor.

Welcoming in guests and serving drinks and bites were beautiful ladies dressed in red, black and white evening dresses with wing-like extensions at the back.

When the drizzle subsided, the owner, Nicole Ansoni simply changed her wet clothes and declared the evening officially open.

“The reason Ansoni Luxury Events exists is to take away the hustle of organising events,” she stated, to cheerful applause from the poolside gathering.

She explained that Ansoni is a luxury wedding and event planning company specializing in event experiences that encompass all of the five senses.

“At Ansoni Luxury Events, we provide highly personalized planning, coupled with creativity, vision and expertise to create luxury weddings and events,” she explained, adding: “A beautiful décor and setting attracts the eye, but we capture your heart while telling your story,” said Nicole.

The company offers a range of services that fall under four broad categories, each with various packages entailed. These are: private event, corporate event, wedding event, and non-profit event services.

The much-anticipated People's Choice Awards Ghana 2015 which will be held in Accra in March next year has been launched in Accra at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

The People's Choice Awards Ghana is a scheme which seeks to award and celebrate individuals and organisations which have contributed as well as those that continue to excel in their various fields towards the development of the Ghanaian arts and entertainment industry.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa

He came, he performed, he conquered. That simply sums up Burundian singer Jean Pierre Nimbona’s 30-year music career.

Commonly known by his stage name Kidum Kibido or simply Kidum, the 40-year-old is one of the few East African musicians who can confidently organise a concert in any of the five East African Community partner states and sell out.

That is what can be said about his latest concert in Kigali, which aimed at celebrating his 30 years in music as well as his 40th birthday.

The Burundian singer pulled off one of the concerts of the year in Kigali, at Kigali Serena Hotel, proving why he remains a force to reckon with, at least in the East African region, as far as the music industry is concerned.

As usual, the Kenya-based artiste, who says he considers Rwanda his second home, did not struggle to impress his audience as he naturally does often.

Gomashie, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, representatives of the title sponsors of the awards, GN Bank (formerly First National Savings & Loans), executives from corporate Ghana as well as other personalities in the Ghanaian telecommunications industry.

The special guest at the event, Dzifa Gomashie, highlighted the role of government to ensure the development of culture, tourism and the arts industry in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Spyder Lee Entertainment, organisers of the awards, Edwin Kweku

Edinkrah, elaborated on the essence of introducing the scheme, adding that 'at a time when the arts and showbiz fraternity is becoming a lucrative industry in other parts of the world, it is only appropriate to introduce initiatives which will challenge us to be able to compete globally. Hence, this awards scheme is to showcase our intent and ingenuity to encourage players in the industry.'

The public can from now to December 31, 2014 send the names of their favourite celebrities who excelled between August 2013 and August 2014 to the shortcode 1446 on MTN, Vodafone and Airtel to be part of the awards.

The nominees would be shortlisted by the awards board together with the awards statisticians, Deloitte, for public voting. The winners would be announced at the awards night scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

A bevy of Rwandan artistes, upcoming and established, were there to support him, including new-kid-on-the-block Gaby Umutare, Peace, Bac T, the female duo of Charly and Nina as well as Social Mula, who started off the show.

Tusker Project Fame 6 winner Hope also joined in to support his compatriot on his special day by performing a number of songs, including a rendition of John Legend’s ‘All of me’.

Hope, yet to have a major music breakthrough since his TPF win, proved he still has the talent that got him places, singing and at the same time taking turns on different musical instruments, including the keyboard and guitar.

Soon it was Mani Martin’s turn to wow the crowd with his usual electrifying performances of his songs, including his latest ‘Akagezi ka Mushoroza’ and old ones such as ‘My destiny’.

With the help of his band, Kesho, Mani Martin put up one of

the performances of the evening, prompting the audience to go on their feet to dance along. He was also the one to sing a birthday song for Kidum.

Kidum prayed and then cut his birthday cake before he kicked off his mesmerising performance.

The ‘Mapenzi’ singer hit the stage at 10p.m and did not stop singing until 1a.m – three hours of exciting live performance of dozens of songs which left the audience demanding for more.

Kidum also took turns on the instruments, playing the drums for the other singers who performed on the night, including Christopher.

Later he invited Big Brother ex-hotshot Frankie ‘Joe’ Rukundo to perform their duet ‘Kipendaroho’ to the delight of the crowd.

Kidum invited on stage several Rwandan artistes he nurtured including Tonzi, Tom Close and Dr Claude, and his compatriot Yoya, and presented them to the audience.

But as they say, all good things must come to an end. After 1a.m it was time to draw the curtain on a wonderful musical evening, even as the audience clearly yearned for more.

than Milano. It appeared as though they

The German side, who led at the end of the second and third quarters, were outscored 24-21 in the fourth and with just two group games remaining their prospects of making the Top 16 now appear extremely bleak.

Heiko Schaffartzik top scored for Bayern with 15 points, while Dusko Savanovic and John Bryant reached double figures.

Bayern led by a solitary point after a tight first half and the advantage remained intact by the end of a back-and-forth third quarter.

The tense nature of the contest continued into the final quarter, but the home side looked like they would move clear when they earned a four-point advantage in the closing stages.

Bayern refused to give up the fight, though, and overtime looked on the cards when they levelled at 81-81, only for Hackett to have the last say - sparking jubilant scenes on the home bench.

Wales will seek to end a six-year wait for a southern hemisphere scalp when they take on South Africa with one eye very much fixed on next year's World Cup.

The last Welsh victory over a SANZAR nation was a 21-18 win over Australia in November 2008, coach Warren Gatland's sole winning performance against either the Wallabies, Springboks or All Blacks in 27 matches since he took charge in 2007.

South Africa will not, however, be a roll-over, having notched up the year's sole defeat of New Zealand and also having only ever lost to Wales once in 29 clashes.

It promises to be a humdinger of a Test match at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, where Wales went down 34-16 to the All Blacks last weekend after leading with 12 minutes to play.

"We were obviously disappointed last week," said Wales fly-half Dan Biggar. "We felt like we were in with a real chance after 68 minutes but we let it slip at the end.

"It's all about moving forward now. We've put it to bed and it's all about focusing on this week and making sure we put on a good performance and more importantly getting the win."

Biggar, as Gatland had also stressed, insisted there was not an underlying concern over fitness levels.

"I think our fitness has been good. We put quite a big shift in on Saturday night pushing one of the best sides in the world all the way," the Ospreys playmaker said.

"We're concentrating now on finishing the autumn series on a high."

The last time South Africa played Wales, the home side came back from deficits of 17-0 and 30-17 to triumph 31-30 in Nelspruit.

"We know our record against the Southern Hemisphere isn't great," Biggar admitted. "In the summer we played a pretty complete game up until the last few minutes and then we let it slip.

"We can take a lot from that performance and hopefully we can push on and get the result on Saturday because that's all that matters."- International window -

Gatland has made three enforced changes to his run-on team, Liam Williams notably coming in for injured Northampton winger George North.

veteran prop Gethin Jenkins and hooker Scott Baldwin take over from Paul James and Richard Hibbard, who have returned to club duty with Bath and Gloucester respectively since Saturday's match falls outside the international Test window.

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer has made eight changes to his team from the one that beat Italy 22-6 last weekend.

Prop Tendai Mtawarira, hooker Bismarck du Plessis, full-back Willie le Roux, and wing duo Cornal Hendricks and Lwazi Mvovo will all start.

The changes in the back three were required because Johan Goosen (Racing Metro), Bryan Habana (Toulon) and JP Pietersen (Panasonic Wild Knights), who started against the Azzurri, are not available, while the two changes to the front row are rotational.

"We will face a fired-up Welsh side this weekend. They played very well against New Zealand and it will be a tough end to our season," said Meyer, whose team opened their November series with a 29-15 defeat by Ireland before beating England 31-28.

"But we want to finish on a high

and the focus this week has been on ensuring we keep on building on what we've done thus far this year."

For Gatland, the clash against the Springboks will be Wales' last before next year's World Cup in England, in which the Welsh have been drawn in pool that includes the hosts, Australia and Fiji.

Wales opened their November series with a 33-28 defeat by the Wallabies before an experimental side scraped past Fiji 17-13, and the coach was under no illusions of the value of playing the best teams in the world.

"The autumn (series) is not a competition, it's about using it to play against the best teams in the world who have come off really strong campaigns to prepare potentially for the Six Nations, which is our competition, and the World Cup," he said.

"What we're going to be judged on is our performance in the World Cup and our whole focus is on getting out of that pool in the World Cup.

"That's been the whole emphasis of this campaign and it'll be the same with the Six Nations."

What do you think are the main challenges in ensuring a good marriage in the former and the latter (LG4 & LTE) technologies through services delivery?

Rwanda’s telecoms industry is growing remarkably fast and we’re in an enviable position to be among the first countries to launch fourth-generation (4G) technology in the region. I wouldn’t say there are challenges in the adoption– in fact, there are host opportunities for companies such Airtel who can now offer superior services at fast speeds.

However, there is still a huge, addressable market from 3.75 G, which is currently in broad use on our network in Rwanda. The point is that we want to offer as many options as possible to our customers and that is why the investment in 4G technology is significant and critical for us.

As a mobile communications operator, how do you assess new standards when considering new changes, from migrating over to LG4 LTE services?

Our introduction of 4G LTE is not a migration at all. As I have mentioned, what we have done is given our customers options to serve their wide range of needs. While the 4G LTE technology has been introduced, Airtel Rwanda will continue to serve customers with the 3.75G internet as well.

Our assessment to provide this

service was solely based on the needs of our customers; and as a customer-centric mobile services provider, we made a deliberate decision to offer our customers a world class technology that would aid them not only in their business but also change the way they interact with the internet hence presenting

endless opportunities in the world of social interaction and doing business.

Rwanda as well as some African countries have been experiencing growth in the mobile phones. What do you think telecoms companies should do to invest much more in personalized services with the use of 4G wireless broadband internet service?

I believe that first we have to understand the market in which we

operate. We at Airtel have, doing this and have rapidly learned that growth is fast in terms of adaptability to technology which exposes our customers to a world of customized services.

What we as telecom companies need to do is invest more in personalized services that ride on 4G – and ensure a

diverse range of services which can help our economy grow. This is something we are heavily looking into at Airtel Rwanda.

Developing countries led by India, are taking the lead in setting global standards in the rapidly-transforming telecommunications sector. What do you think will be the main innovation for Airtel Rwanda with the introduction of LG4 LTE services?

We are currently working on a number of innovative products and

services around this technology which we shall soon introduce to our customers. Overall, we see technology as an economic enabler for our people and businesses. There’s no doubt about what advanced technology can do to our economy and as you’ve mentioned, some of these emerging-market economies have excellent case studies that we can learn from. For now, what our customers can expect from Airtel is great products and services and some of these will be seen in a few months.

Currently, deployment of personalized services in the telecoms industry, such as e-Health and e-Education, are services with future potential? How is Airtel looking to enable this new business model on the local market with the use of LG4 LTE services?

We are currently doing more in-depth research in the market to identify which areas need the most attention in terms of mobile services. So far, e-Education and e-Health are among the most critical

– and we have to thank the Government of Rwanda for helping the private sector to deepen these services for the benefit of the people of Rwanda. We are currently putting together packages for our customers to enjoy not only with 4G services but the 3.75G as well. These are very interesting times for Rwanda and Airtel is extremely excited to be a part of the growth story.

INTERESTING TIME FOR RWANDA AND AIRTEL

When Rwanda has officially launched the first ever high-speed (4G LTE) wireless broadband network, it became the latest African country to embrace this technology, with the potential to make a concrete contribution in speeding up ICT based services. In an exclusive interview with Indo Africa Times (IAT) correspondent Aimable Twahirwa, the Managing Director of Bharti Airtel Rwanda, Mr. Teddy R.v.S Bhullar talks about what this innovation means for developing countries led by India, as they are taking the lead in setting global standards in the rapidly-transforming telecommunications sector.
