Renovations to the lIlustration Building begin this summer with the restoration of all 99 windows. A 5-8 year phased renovation project is planned to include a five-story addition on the east side of the building. The addition will house a new code-compliant stairway, an elevator with handicapped accessibility and restrooms. It will be located at the rear of the existing building, set back from the main street to the north and with a minimum footprint. existing building, while providing contemporary ele-
ments benefiting the needs of the curriculum. The
parking area to the east may be slightly reconfigured.
Geo-technical and foundation work for the stair tower
will start in June. The building be unoccupied during
the summer months.
Farnum Hall will be coming down. In 2001, the build-
ing was thoroughly studied by Cutler Associates, a
design and construction firm. Their report indicated
considerable sub-surface movement of the building
over the years, due to the soil and debris on which it
was built in 1935, or to the railroad tunnel beneath the
site. In 2004 additional required physical upgrades
were considered an unsound investment, and that
spring the last occupants of the building moved out.
15 West opened the following September. The build-
ing will be demolished in June and replaced with
green space. A small urban park suitable for critiques
and recreation is planned. Parking will remain intact.
Carr Haus renovation, phase II begins after com-
mencement. The project includes an upgrade to the
building’s cooling, heating and ventilation systems
and a complete renovation at the basement level.
Additional summer projects include the installation of
a code-compliant fire alarm and sprinkler system in
Thompson House; replacing the roof of Nightingale
House; and to address reoccurring leaking problems,
roof masonry and flashing repairs to the College
Building.
