Passengers were welcomed by local tourism students from Weymouth College and enjoyed excursions to Stonehenge and Salisbury and more locally saw them venture off to Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub-Tropical Gardens. To mark the first time call by the cruise liner, the Port’s General Manager (Commercial), Ian McQuade, presented a Portland Port plaque to the Captain on board (pictured). Ian said: “It is a privilege to welcome the ‘Vision of the Seas’ into Portland. Her call marks the beginning of Portland Port’s best cruise season to date.” The second cruise call of the season arrived within a few days of the ‘Vision of the Seas’ visit. ‘Azamara Journey’ called into Portland as part of her cruise around the USA and Europe and brought around 600 passengers. Owned and operated by Azamara Cruises, the ‘Azamara Journey’ was another inaugural call into the port. The luxury cruise liner was welcomed into Portland by Portland Town Crier, Stuart Cave and Portland Castle representative, Luanne Peers. Paintings, photographs and jewellery are just some of the items on offer. Cruise passengers from the ‘Vision of the Seas’ and the ‘Azamara Journey’ seemed to like this new edition to the quayside, with many buying items to take back home with them as gifts for friends and family or as souvenirs from their time spent in Portland. Once again, the Weymouth Concert Brass Band, Portland Sea Cadets and the Nothe Fort Artillery (pictured) entertained Portland’s foreign visitors as they departed for their next port of call. Passengers very much enjoy the entertainment as they stand out on their balconies either listening to the Brass Band or watching the young Sea Cadets marching along the quayside. As a final goodbye, the Nothe Fort Artillery fire their 1872 two pounder canon, giving passengers a very loud send off as they wave goodbye to Portland, hopefully to return again another day. Ian added: “Portland’s cruise calls have been increasing year on year. We have 10 cruise calls this year and 2013 is already looking extrememly promising.” 3 Antibes Yacht Show 4 5 Posidonia 2012 UMC at Portland Port 6 7 Manor Marine News 8 Oil Spill Exercise 9 Business Development Manager www.portland-port.co.uk Tel: +44(0)1305 824044 Fax: +44(0)1305 824055 [email protected] Superyacht ‘Ace’

First cruise calls of the season arrive at Portland

The beginning of May saw the arrival of Royal Caribbean’s ‘Vision of the Seas’ which brought along with her approximately 1800 passengers.

The inaugural call from the Royal Caribbean cruise liner was a terrific start to Portland Port’s cruise season, which sees a total of 10 cruise calls in 2012.

Passengers were welcomed by local tourism students from Weymouth College and enjoyed excursions to Stonehenge and Salisbury and more locally saw them venture off to Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub-Tropical Gardens.

Portland Port Charity Challenge 2012Once again, the staff at Portland Port are taking on another gruelling challenge in aid of two local charities. This year the port have decided to stay local and and undertake a home-grown triathlon.

The challenge will involve a 5 mile kayak up ‘The Fleet’, (a shallow area of water between Chesil Beach and the mainland), followed by an 8 mile hike from Langton Herring to the Hardy Monument, and finished off with a whopping 25 mile mountain bike ride through the rolling countryside back to Portland Port. The ‘Portland Port Charity Triathlon’ takes place on Sunday 8th July.

This year sees the port attempt to raise as much money as possible for two very special local charities: Julia’s House children’s hospice and the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust. Just Giving pages for both these very worthwhile causes have been set up. Portland Port visits the Antibes Yacht Show

For the first time Portland Port attended the prestigious Antibes Yacht Show, where 13,380 visitors came to admire the 130 yachts on display. There were a wide variety of vessels on show from 15 to 49 metres, including motor yachts, sailing yachts and catamarans. There was a choice for every budget, from 200,000 Euros to tens of millions of Euros. A large number of vessels

of 40 metres plus stood out from the others. Being at the show was a great opportunity for the port to promote the Olympic anchorages and moorings that Portland has available this summer, but to also highlight the benefits of yachts calling at Portland for general marine services.

Portland Port has multiple deep water berths available for 25 metre plus vessels. Portland is a safe and secure private commercial port, that is able to offer bunkering, fresh water, shore side power and access to marine services. Portland is also ideally placed as a transit port between Falmouth and Cowes and is looking to attract some of the large sailing yachts that are participating in the regatta circuit this summer. Superyacht ‘Ace’ calls into Portland

Portland Port was delighted to be able to provide a berth for the luxury superyacht ‘Ace’. The 87 metre vessel called into Portland to undertake some provisioning and take on fresh water. The superyacht was provided with a berth on the Port’s ‘Queens Pier’ which recently underwent a £5 million revamp and now boasts two additional berths increasing the berth

capacity from 6 to 8 berths. The ‘Ace’ was berthed at Portland Port for 5 days.

Oil Spill Response ExercisePortland Port and Aegean’s subsidiary, Portland Bunkers International, exercise together on a regular basis to cover emergency situations such as fire and an oil spill. All communications, both radio and verbal, are co-ordinated through the Pollution Control Officer in the harbour office. All team members are trained in each other’s roles so if someone is unable to attend, their place can be taken by another team member. The last exercise was conducted in May 2011 with the next one due at the end of June 2012.
