Dear Friends, Helpers and Sponsors:

I had 3 trips to the to the USA last year, we were celebrating 60 years of Holt International Children's Services (Holt USA), helping children find homes. Holt Korea (Holt Children's Services) celebrated ours last year as we count from 1955, when my siblings were adopted, while Holt USA celebrates from 1956, when the adoption program was begun in both Eugene and Seoul. We had thrilling times together, some of my siblings were able to attend, and the "Voices of the Seoul" were invited to perform in LosAngles for an MPAK fundraiser and in Portland for their annual auction. We met many adoptees and their families and rejoiced in all the Lord has done for so many of them. Here at Ilsan in Korea we are planning big renovations of our buildings. The Goyang City has demanded that we build separate facilities for our rehabilitation "Town" and our long term facility, or "Home" , and reduce our population. Reducing the "Town" has not been a problem, since many have become independent this year, but the "Home", has many severely disabled that can't be relocated. We are thankful that funds are available from the sale of our farm land.We thank all of you for your love and concern for all of our Holt children and projects over the many years of Holt's work in many lands. Sincerely in the Lord who has provided all that is needed over these many years.

At the end of an alley in the thriving Hongdae Street lies a cute little shop. Entering through the door under the signboard saying ‘Pumda,’ we were embraced by the smell of fruit jam and syrup as sweet as the smile of the shop-owner Seon-mi, whose bright face betrays her painful past. She used to dream of starting her own business while working at the Kangaroo Store and now she became the rightful owner of Pumda shop. She still had a long way to go but she is taking a concrete step one after another toward happiness, having another dream of developing the business further and helping other single parents.

With A Spoon of Pumda’s Sweet Jam, You Can Embrace Everything

0504 Story of an unwed mother

“Hi! Welcome! Come in! Come in! It’s freezing out there, isn’t it? I was afraid you might have a hard time finding us.” Seon-mi Lee warmly greeted us with a graceful smile and soon brought out cups of hot tea for us. Her six-year-old son Dae-yoo had been drawing, gently sitting by his working mother, and greeted us too, with a merry and playful voice when we entered. “You can’t even imagine how constantly he does things. He was here at one moment and there at another. And those ceaseless questions he asks! I’m just looking forward to the spring break of his day care center. Ha! Ha!” The mother and son talking to and playing with each other looked rather like friends. It was surprised to see that Dae-yoo seemed to think of his mother as a good friend and yet used polite words to her. “Actually, he started talking only recently. Everyone advised me to take him to some experts as he had been very much out of the timeline of language development. But one day he started talking just like that. Though I don’t remember the first word he said, once he started talking, he never stopped!”

Twenty-four hours a day are never enough for Seon-mi who runs the shop all by herself. After dropping off her son at the kindergarten, she is busy all day buying ingredients at the market and making various kinds of jam and syrup. Since her preservative-free jam and syrup have a short shelf life, she has to make five kinds of jam, about seven pounds in total, every day, which require constant stirring while it is boiled. She does not have time even for a quick break. Seven pounds of jam are seemingly easy to make for someone. But it is 30 bottles in total and she has to do all the work from getting the ingredients ready to sterilizing the bottles and packaging them all alone. It is never an easy task. However, she is as happy as ever. She is happy about having work to do and a future with her son. She went through a painful past and now she is in the right place full of happiness within her reach.

Seon-mi’s dreams are made of memories with her mother and fulfilled by HCS’s support

In the past, Seon-mi was not in a position to refuse hard work. She had advanced to a good university but the poor situation of her family required her to keep working various part-time jobs. She had to stop attending the university eventually, but she became a strong and independent person with encouragement, ‘The harder you work, the more you earn.’ Along the way she met Dae-yoo’s father.

However, happiness with him did not last long because of his family’s misdeeds. They even held her accountable for the illegal money they owed. Besides, he later turned out to be married to another woman all the while. After finding out the truth, Seon-mi made a decision and did not even bother to look back. She broke up the relationship with him exactly 15 days after Dae-yoo was born, and began a new life as a mother. Raising a child by herself has never been easy. But her life changed after someone advised her to get some help from HCS, they gave her directions when she was lost, and truthful advice when she got weak and troubled. Seon-mi said, “The Kangaroo Store helped me a lot, giving a single parent like me an opportunity to work. So many single parents have a hard time living as a working parent. How much do you think a single parent can earn a month? Only 800,000 won (approximately 700 US dollars), because they can only get part-time jobs. Besides, unmarried parents are often neglected by the government’s support system. That’s why I decided to get my own business even though I knew that I would face a lot of challenges. I was able to gather up courage thanks to the counselors at HCS’s Single Parents Support Center. What can I do for a living while raising a child? Is there anything I am apt for? All these serious questions led her to fruit. She remembered the jam her mother used to make with slightly spoiled fruits when she was Dae-yoo’s age. Her mother was a fruit vendor. The sweet smell of the jam and seeing her mother making it, remain as warm and happy memories of Seon-mi’s.

Page 4: Vol.22 April 2017 Together Holtlove.holt.or.kr/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/170426... · 2019-11-20 · The participants in Happy Together 2016 with their caligraphy arts, which represent

Seon-mi explained, “I thought about opening a single-dish bistro, but there was a chance I would have to shut it down for a week if my child get sick. If I let a part-timer do the cooking, the flavor would not be the same. Home-made jam and syrup were perfect in many ways. Once I decided what I’d sell, the details easily came along. A low budget meant I have to look for a small space and low fixed expenses. As soon as I checked all the details, I went out to get the business started, getting all the money I could, practically begging the landlord to lower the deposit, and filling the shop little by little.” ‘Pumda’ means ‘embrace’ in Korean, which represents Seon-mi’s wish to embrace everything. She wishes not only to build a life for her son and herself but also to help other single parents. Even though she is still struggling to make ends meet, she wants to sponsor other single parents and give hands-on advise

on how to start a business some day when her shop makes a stable profit. She said, “I’m sponsoring the one-year-old birthday parties hosted by HCS and Lotteria with my jam. I empathize with mothers who feel sorry for letting the guests leave the party empty-handed. I made jars of jam as thank-you gifts for the guests of Dae-yoo’s first birthday party and everyone loved them. It could be nothing, but I’d be really happy if my jam can deliver a warm message from single parents to the guests.” She smiled shyly, saying that she mistakenly thought she could make a good profit as soon as she opens the shop and she could donate more. She said, “I feel bad for not being able to return all the help and support I received in the past for the moment, but I’ll try to do more for others in need of help in the future.” Her great heart already spreads love and courage to HCS and other single parents.

Pumda's sweet and yet healthy home-made jam and syrup

Pumda's jam is the creation of long hours of research and efforts

to make healthy and yet delicious food. Pumda does not depend on large

quantities of sugar for sweetness like other producers. The secret of Pumda's

sweet and yet low-calorie jam is enzymes. The production process of Pumda's

jam is very complex and meticulous and thus it completely deserves the relatively

expensive price. Having tasted the jam, no customer has visited Pumda shop

just once. The package of Pumda's jam with dried flowers also makes a great gift.

Pumda continues to develop other flavors of jam including cranberry, blueberry,

citron, orange, tropical, cherry and strawberry as well as various kinds of organic tea

including powdered green matcha, Earl Grey and rhubarb.

I run because...

Love in world

It is sizzling in December in Cambodia with the average temperature as high as 30 degrees Celsius and extreme humidity. Still, a young man ran 111 kilometers under this condition. I run for the children of Cambodia. He told to himself whenever he wanted to throw away his heavy shoes and backpack. Why did he face up to such an ordeal? Here is the story of Yeong-rok Kim’s adventure on Angkor Wat Super Race.

Page 5: Vol.22 April 2017 Together Holtlove.holt.or.kr/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/170426... · 2019-11-20 · The participants in Happy Together 2016 with their caligraphy arts, which represent

0908 Love in world

Running in CambodiaYeong-rok has always a smile on his face, which gave

him the nickname ‘Smile-rok.’ But it was hard to keep smiling in the harsh jungle of Cambodia. He had to run 111 kilometers for three days, fighting against the weather too sizzling even to walk, extreme humidity and mercilessly scorching sun. While running, his body intensely desired a glass of cold water and a fresh beverage as well as a cool shower and comfortable couch. But at the same time, he newly found the preciousness of his two healthy legs as well as all the other little things that made it possible for him to run. Whenever his heavy backpack weighed down on his shoulders, the happy memories with the children at Holt Dream Center gave him the strength to keep going. The pleasant encounters with the locals who always responded to him with big smiles even in the poor circumstances also led him to the end of the race. He was able to get more intimate with the lives of the locals during the race and saw that they were completely content with what they had in harmony with nature. The purity of their lives touched the deepest part of his heart.

Many people supported Yeong-rok’s beautiful journey

Yeong-rok’s beautiful journey was financially supported by CEO Hae-yeon Yoo of City Hands Company, who adopted two sons with the help of HCS and chaired Holt Han Sarang, an associan of adoptive families. CEO Yoo said that he was happy to support Yeong-rok because HCS gave him a new life as a father of two children. By supporting Yeong-rok’s race, he spread love to the children of Cambodia. There were others who read about Yeong-rok’s challenge on SNS and gave a donation. As a result, 1.21 million won of donation was delivered to the Cambodian children. And it all happened because Yeong-rok decided to run.

Written by D J You (Director of Overseas Outreach Team)

My first challenge and HCSYeong-rok’s relationship with HCS started when he joined the 31st volunteer group at Holt Dream

Center in Cambodia as a member of World Friends ICT Volunteers Program (hosted by Korean University Council for Social Service and sponsored by the Ministry of Education). He arrived in Cambodia with the eagerness to make children happier and teach them many things, but left there having received more than he gave. After returning home, he could not stop thinking about the children who gave him such great love and energy even though they lived in such dire circumstances. The Cambodian children who cannot dream of ‘dreams come true’ because of poverty made him see himself with all the right circumstances and yet not being able to make the first step toward something great. He decided to stop hesitating and go for it. His challenge started in the desert. He went through 250 kilometers of a self-sufficing marathon for seven days in Sahara desert. He did not stop there. He joined the 111 kilometers of Angkor Wat Super Race through the Cambodian jungle. This time he ran the 111 kilometer course with a purpose of donating 1.11 million won to the Cambodian children at Holt Dream Center.

Coming to Holt Ilsan Town is a completely different experience from what I have done before. I am no stranger to traveling abroad and meeting new people, but I can safely say that Holt Ilsan Town is a unique experience.

I am not going to say working at Holt Ilsan is easy, because it isn’t. Especially when you don’t speak Korean. Sometimes you will have difficulties which are made bigger from the language and cultural barriers, but seeing the smiling faces, seeing how happy the residents become makes it all worth it. There is this one resident I went walking with and he was very physically demanding. His legs were poor so he needed to be constantly supported the entire way. My arms and shoulders hurt and I was constantly worried if something went wrong. But now, every time I see him outside or I go to the house he is at, he recognises me and, despite his poor legs, hurries to greet me. Seeing him smile and reach out to me fills me with such joy and affection.

Volunteering at Ilsan is not just you helping the residents. When they can, the residents will do what they can to help you. Since I cannot speak Korean very well I sometimes have trouble with residents with mental problems. They need to be told very clearly in Korean what is okay and what is not. I was with this girl who was a head taller than me and two other residents, and I took her to the coffee shop. She took a biscuit without permission from the counter and tried to eat it. I had difficulties getting it back, but one of the other residents, a lovely girl with Down syndrome, started helping. She grabbed the biscuit and put it back on the counter. She started scolding the girl who had taken the biscuit in Korean. After that, whenever I am out with her, she takes on a sort of leader role and helps me with the other residents.

Every day we can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, at Molly’s Home with Molly and Dr.Cho. Usually you can get some more western food, but when I was there Molly was still recovering from her chemotherapy, so we eat more traditional Korean food now. Talking with Molly and Dr. Cho is a delight. Molly happily tells about Holt and its history, while Dr. Cho can tell you about and explain Korean norms if you ask.

Holt Ilsan Town was a unique experience for me, and it will be a unique experience for everyone who volunteers here. You will be able to experience and see what the Holt Agency has done for the children of Korea. You will be able to see, experience and be a part of Holt’s “Love in Action”.

Knitting the Bonds

A Letter from the U.S.I’m Derek Parker and my Korean name is Hye-jin Ahn. I was found in front of the gate

of Holt Ilsan Center and Chairperson Molly Holt saved me. She was the first American who loved me. I was adopted by my parents when I was three. After graduation I married the girlfriend I met at a church and had three children. I became a manager of a big bank and moved to Southern California when I got promoted several years later. I currently live nearby to San Diego. When my father and brother visited Korea in the spring of 2016, Chairperson Holt suggested they to join 2016 Happy Together. I think she wanted to meet the baby again she saved long time ago. We were lucky enough to join the program. HCS helped many children like me have a successful life under the wings of a loving family. On behalf of them all, I am truly grateful for HCS. I had a wonderful time in Korea with my father. It was an amazing experience seeing how beautiful and developed country Korea was. I tasted various kinds of delicious Korean food and experienced Korean culture in many ways. Particularly, I loved the calligraphy lesson of Byeong-in Kang. He enthusiastically told us about the uniqueness of Hangeul and gave us an opportunity to write our names and other words in Korean. I hope the exhibition inspired many people. I also wish Happy Together remain as a great opportunity for other adoptees to have the wonderful experience I had.

A special exhibition took place at Hangeul Gallery of Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from January 3 to 30 this year. Last fall, 14 disabled overseas adoptees from the U.S. and the Netherlands as well as their families and friends visited Korea to join Happy Together, HCS’s motherland tour program for disabled overseas adoptees. They experienced Korean culture and looked for their roots. The special exhibition titled ‘Knitting the Bonds’ was for the arts made up of Hangeul written by the participants in Happy Together along with calligrapher Byeong-in Kang. “Loving is with your hearts, not with your eyes,” they wrote it in the Korean alphabet. What they exhibited was a true family tied to each other beyond all kinds of physical limits.

Han-gyeol cannot sleepSeven-year-old Han-gyeol’s eyes are still wide open and

show no sign of sleepiness tonight as always. Although his father scolded him and persuaded him several times to refrain from watching TV or videos on a cell phone too much, Han-gyeol’s sleeping problem only got worse and affected his daily life. The teacher at his day-care center worried that Han-gyeol lagged other children in language and physical development and often slept during the day. The teacher suggested Han-gyeol’s father take him to a psychology counseling center.

Hope is resting on Han-gyeol’s treeRecently, Han-gyeol began to relax his anxiety and

form some emotional stability. At first, he refused to draw pictures, afraid of negative responses, but now he enjoys drawing. He expressed his wish to interact with the world by saying that it would be nice if beetles visit the tree in his drawing. The first sign that your mind starts to heal is showing positive interest in the world. Han-gyeol is now taking his first steps and HCS will be there for him like a rock. The love of many people has been a strong tree for Han-gyeol to lean on. Thanks to the love and support of many warm hearts, Han-gyeol would soon have sweet dreams at night.

If I go to sleep, someone I love would disappear. They did clinical psychological tests and counseling in

order to find out the reasons of Han-gyeol’s development delay and sleeplessness at night. At one point during one of the counseling sessions Han-gyel mumbled, “If I go to sleep, someone I love would disappear.” In fact, his mother had passed away after long years of illness from cancer. Han-gyeol could not sleep at night since then. There had been no one to take full care of him because his mother had been sick ever since he was born, his father had been busy supporting the family, and his sisters had been too young themselves to take care of their baby brother. The death of his beloved mother was too much for a little boy to handle by himself. He had been coping with the feelings he could not understand by watching TV and videos.

Support for Han-gyeol’s psychology therapyHan-gyeol was able to get psychological and speech

therapy to deal with anxiety and developmental delay at the psychological center, thanks to the government’s voucher system. Everyone hoped he would get better through the therapy, but soon the vouchers expired. Han-gyeol’s father could not afford the therapy, so there was no way for Han-gyeol to keep getting it. Then they asked the Daegu Office of Holt Psychological Therapy Center for help, and they raised funds for Han-gyeol to help in many ways. Many people hoped that Han-gyeol would grow up as a healthy child and did not hesitate to help him, Han-gyeol would be able to get therapy through next year.
