Turning the Tide G’Wiz: Galveston Wizard

A wizard of old once reflected with wise words, saying “A place for ev-erything, everything in it’s place.” Himself a publisher with Poor Richard’s Almanack and The Penn-sylvania Gazette, in addition to be-ing a beer guzzling, cannabis grow-ing, key and kite flying scientist, inventor, politician, statesman and founding father of ours, we figured we’d take these words to heart. Even if Benjamin Franklin was a bit OCD, We have a pretty good idea what he was talking

about with his famous quote. As the final research and collec-tion of resources puts us back into action in the heat of Galveston’s booming Summer tourism season, Volume Seven‘team’ of this publi-cation has been a testament to that fact. We work to again become su-perconductors of connection for you, the reader. We stand at the gates of op-portunity, ready to bring our team and it’s services to you, A wizard is nothing without his staff.

We have reached you once again, and we trust this, our Volume Seven‘team,’ finds you well and in good spirits. Though we’ve encountered that not all armies are here for our salvation, and some calls for help have been heeded, but assistance has not yet materialized, yet we continue in our quest to connect to Galveston Island visitors, businesses, new locals, and our existing community of readers, as help will arrive! You hold the proof in your hands. G’Wiz! Galveston Island is going through a lot of changes. It’s hard to believe we will soon find our-selves two years into our island’s recovery, and she’s never looked better! I hope we have all considered well what direction we are headed and where we wish to grow. Where do Islanders want to be as a community? What do tourists want of us locals? Entertainment? Education? ...how about an edutainment guide? G’Wiz! We consider that we all want peace and prosperity, but how can that be reached? Who’s got the right ideas when most people can only seem to point out the wrong, dismissing viewpoints, ideas or experience before it can be studied for univer-sal truths and application? Do you think the current situation has created a little tension or loss?! This is where the city is defunct. Healthy competition is either suppressed and/or attacked. The island tourism and commerce appears both boxed in or boxed out in some areas, we’ll try to elaborate more on that one soon. Our visitors, tourists, potential residents, lifelong residents, seasoned veterans and newbie’s alike all form our island community. It can change for the worse or strive to become better. There is no “in between.” (Editors Note: Or was there?) Sometimes it takes a kitten to get through to a mean old bulldog. Stirring up, encouraging, and helping motivate others can help clear up their “crazy” schedules, and THAT takes time AND boldness. But when does being bold become popular? When will doing the right thing become the “norm?” Many of us have allowed ourselves to become compartmentalized, feeling that we can’t personally make a difference on any scale, be it at home, work, relationships, or otherwise. Guess what...? You can! Giving of yourself, not grudgingly or of necessity forms a bond of shared “being”, (Baughn: A Special “Baughn’d”) and slowly but surely you’ve built up a team of people in your life that have been (hopefully) so benefited by your role(s) in their lives as to have them ready AND in position to help when it is their chance to answer the call. It will be THEN that you will notice that you are actively Turning the Tide. That one spark, that one glimmer of hope shines through. Working together, you can bring many strengths, observations and insights to the table; however, there are essential functions and computations that you personally do not have the time to address because you are truly ‘busy.’ Learn to offset your skills and talents with those of your fellow travelers. Delegate, promote, assign. Galveston is primed to learn this lesson, if politics, batten-down-the-hatches-conservancy, closed-minded, misguided, independently undivided individuals can peer out of their hiding spots to notice. Sustainability! Please see to it that this Volume gets read and enjoyed in its entirety by the decision maker in your life (hint, it should be you!) Help us revive the Galveston Wizard and it’s spirit! Seek out our advertisers and supporters, introduce us to new one’s, and discover the prog-ress of our Web site. Get involved or miss out! Lights, Camera, ACTION! (Video content henceforth sworn to be delivered to readers.) Support our efforts to continue serving the Island, as we’ve worked since well before the storm. Tourists welcome! Come see what all we’ve done with the place. Walk with us, in forgiveness, open to the ideas and opportunities we may discover together. We know that it takes commitment to work regularly, to foster progress, and to bring about positive changes in our lives and community. Have Patience and Consis-tency in what you ask, proving yourself to be a good leader and steward, and your efforts will eventually bear fruit. Why apply yourself to such things? We’ve been working hungrily to seek shelter, planning to obtain stability, perfecting money management, finding and utilizing resources to strengthen our organization. Why? To help make sure your animal needs are met, and by that we mean your creature comforts and curiosities. Enjoy the sunshine! We look forward to seeing you again soon. (Back cover for details.)

I made my way from a meeting at the Stork Club with publisher Vance Reddin, which-soon relocated to “Club 21” across Post Of-fice Street. I had my mind set on later attend-ing a “meet the candidates” event organized by Galveston Alliance of Island Neighbor-hoods (www.gaingalveston.org) to be held at the Grand Opera House that same evening.

Good friend, political/social satirist, enter-tainer, musi-cian, airwave personality and

artist George Douglas Lee was MC’ing the event, so I knew we were in for lively ques-tions, commentary and criticism for the can-didates. Attending the event DID help me meet the candidates, and I got a glimpse of all of the hard work that goes into endorsing a candidate, organizing a campaign, hitting the streets with the issues, and working to get the best representatives elected...and all you have to do is vote! Luckily for us islanders, even those not elected into a particular posi-tion will hopefully continue as highly-active, productive citizens working in unison to guide our island towards prosperity and peace.

Up There and Back Again by Shane Lassiter

Staff

I had come to Paris in the sum-mer of 1899 to write about the amazing singer songwriter Candye Kane. There was just one problem, I had never seen Candye Kane. Just then an unconscious Argentinean fell through the ceiling, he was soon joined by a dwarf dressed as a nun, then something unusual happened. I heard a strangely familiar polyphonic ringtone of Scotland the Brave, growing louder by the moment as everything else seemed to fade away. I had done it again? Yup, I’d fallen asleep while playing Moulin Rouge with the repeat setting on. (a rath-er odd setting for movies anyway don’t you agree? I’ll have to contact divx about that…) So any way the phone call was from my BFF telling me to wake up and get ready to go to the Candye Kane concert at the Continental Club up in H-Town. He made sure to remind me to comb my hair after showering and to wear clean clothes and any shoes. Nor-mally this would be a rather insulting statement coming from one grown man to another but in his defense he is a Virgo and furthermore I often do forget to do these sort of things, especially the shoes part (Later on, I’d wish he’d mentioned something about bringing aspirin). So two and a half hours later we’re walking up to the Continental Club to bask in the magic of the mag-nificently stacked (Trust me, she won’t mind my saying so), Bluesy, Jazzy, Cra-zy and generally oh so fabulous Diva …yes the one the only Ms. Candye Kane. I first heard her hit song: “I’m

on a Bender” at a drag show performance at the Pink Dolphin here on the island (way back in da’ day, when it was still on the Seawall). The performer there was Ms. Chavela; who in her own right was completely drag-tastic and did the song no harm at all. Once that song played I knew I was a fan and in love. A fan of Candye Kane that is, (nothing funny I just like talent). Wait, come to think of it, my BFF I was at this Candye Kane show with bore a striking resemblance to Chavela, hmmm. Apparently we were early, or the show was starting late or whatever, so we had a couple of dozen cocktails each, which would be marginally funny if It weren’t true. Btw, if you get a chance to visit the Continental Club up there say hi to the very cool although kind of scary bartender named Squid. He makes a kick ass, well, anything you might order. The atmosphere in the place gives you the kind of feeling you got when you first started going to bars and or night clubs. First of all it smells. Not particularly bad, but strongly of old booze and boozers and concrete floors that have been painted black over and over for years, but not too recently. You get the feeling something really cool is soon going to or already has gone down in this juke joint. Tons of pictures hung all over the high walls behind the bar and many were signed, by whomever had at least one of their 15 minutes here. The pool

table in the back room occasionaly gave me the ole stink eye and then grunted “Humph...” and spat on the ground. The shuffle board was chillin in the corner trying to still look hip but had been here far too long to be awkward or edgy. An upright Ms. Pac Man Game in the far cor-ner was talking to herself and chain smoking a joy-stick, seemingly harmless but you got the feeling if you made eye contact she’d ask you for change (Drugs are bad kids, Drugs are bad). Oh, and then there’s the huge court yard out back with a big lit up elvis lettering piece of artwork. So with an ever so slight booze buzz seeping into my noggin, I looked up from the floor past the weaving barstool and notice that the opening act “Skip Hel-ler” and his band had hit the stage. Okay, let’s talk about Skip. If Johnny Cash, Chris Issac and Dwight Youkum had a baby they would name him, yup you

guessed it Sue, cause Johnny would kick their asses if they didn’t. But if Sue changed his name and was on tour with Candye Kane he would change it to Skip Heller. This hep cat from California em-bodies the essence of rockabil-

ly or americana or maybe it’s just cool old fashioned bonafied rock and roll. In his kuffed 501’s, boots and untucked Black shirt with that cool stitching on the back, pearl buttons and all, he not only looked

the part but warmed up the crowd before the first song like a pro. Now, please don’t repeat this, but Skip told me in private after the show

that he and Candye were sort of an ‘Item’ or at least two parts of a three part ‘item’. This made sense since He and Candye did at least two duets and his (her, their?) band we’re the same with one exception the fem-phenom guitarist known as

Laura Chavez (this is someone you defi-nately would not want play against at gui-tar hero) who joined the ensemble when Candye came on later. Soon enough people were danc-ing and hootin’ and hollerin’ Houston style after every song Skip and his band performed. He gave me a CD and I’ll give you the 411 on how to get it for yourself. Top bunk stuff on there, absolutely great. When the moment arrived that Candye Kane took the stage, Her perfor-mance was everything I expected it to be, she rocked the bar like a carpet crawing speed freak in an poorly-balanced single wide trailer. One comment she made that I found particularly funny was that she was raised with a ‘Drunk Father’ who is now a Jehovah’s Witness, but she preferred the former. When I got home I polished off a 40 oz of premium malt liquor, clicked play on moulin rouge and passed out hop-ing I’d meet the sparkling diamond this time. Simply google any name listed herein to learn more.

The Hispanic AgendaThere is a great need for a Hispanic Agen-da in Galveston County. Hispanics need to be able to identify and address concerns that will affect them in this country. Here are just a few concerns for Hispanics. There is a major lack of access to medical care for our children and senior citizens. The number of Hispanics dropping out of school has been rising at an alarming rate for years. There is not much, if any-thing, being done to address this problem and reverse the trend. There needs to be a way to inform the Hispanic community of tax monies available to create jobs and reduce unemployment. The lack of politi-

cal representation is growing even stron-ger. Time needs to be spent on registering people to vote and getting them out to vote. This is the only way the number of Hispanic electives will increase.I am deeply concerned that current His-panic leaders are failing to represent the Hispanic community in Galveston County. If there has ever been a need for Hispanics to have good strong represen-tation, it is now.

Nocturnal Reverb

The idea began as a concept to combine our love of music with our desire to contribute into an annual musical event. We decided early on that we would seek to help others and give back to society with our events and productions. Nocturnal Reverb at Meridian 2010 gave us the opportunity to announce our style to the world, collaborating with some of Houston and Austin’s great musical talent. We love to play and produce electronic music, so we chose this medium. We flooded the social networks and scene with heavy promotions, and even streamed the event live via Ustream. We hand-selected 13 of Houston’s finest DJs and producers to play great House music in a

“Beats for Books” fund raising event. We accepted book dona-tions at the door for a discounted price and gave a percentage of the door to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Greater Houston, be-cause we truly believe that chil-dren need guidance and educa-

tion the most. The evening was further enlightened with a performance by LeRoy Peters, returning from a long overdue hiatus from DJ-ing. LeRoy Peters is con-sidered one of the “godfathers” of electronic dance music and the after-hours scene in Houston and his presence made the evening a shining night to remem-ber. Next time we hope to have even more lasers and lights! The event was a great success and we were pleased with the percentage of attendees that brought books to donate. We were glad to facilitate the edu-cation of Houston’s future leaders, and hearing some of Texas’ electronic music headliners get Nocturnal on Full Bass Maxx, was a sound for sore ears! Special thanks to all who attended. We hope to see you out at The Loading Dock for ACEO’s up-coming “Phoenix Assembly”, a G’Wiz Benefit Event featuring bands, fashion show, fajitas, merch & more! Keeping it Real... Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asks for a job with a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that rea-son, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. Thefirstday,thewoodcutterbrought18trees. “Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!” Very motivated for the boss’ words, the woodcutter triedharderthenextday,butheonlycouldbring15trees.The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10trees.Dayafterdayhewasbringinglessandlesstrees. “I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked. “Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees...”(Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) Fortunately, I’ve been working. And from what I’ve learned lately, many are not as fortunate. I get up, go for a walk/run, shower, dress and go to work every day that I can, with at least two cups of coffee in me. I work hard. I work late. I work on weekends. I still have a few vices but I’m working on them too. And something I’ve witnessed along my way is despair. So, I looked up the word despair and yep, I’ve changed. Galveston is changing too. Again. Just like when I was younger and from as far back

as I can recall, Claudette, Alicia, Bonnie, Dean, Allison, to name a few, visited in succession. Trees came out of the ground and houses were destroyed and our beautiful island looked like it had been bombed. In just a few short years ev-erything came back to life though. Oleanders were the con-troversy on Broadway back then. The Seawall was booming again in no time, nice shops and restaurants started popping up everywhere, seagulls became bothersome… And now, the Seawall looks good, the historical district is blowing my mind, I’m seeing more and more new establishment ads printed, the west end looks fantastic, real estate is definitely real and when my children grow up, this will all be a memory of how we handle the small change. Has anyone traveled to a third world country lately? I ask because it lends perspective, and because we’ve got one so nearby. It should be required of every businessperson on the island. Following the Ike clean-up, I saw a clean slate, an opportunity. Yeah so the economy is bad and all. We’re dodging tar balls, tax hikes and tourism slumps. We drive over the bridge and feel the pulse of the city, of the World, and some of us move. Others stay and hope this despair begets motivation, which begets momentum and metamor-phosis - right? - So we can get on with it. It’s a choice: save a way of life by letting go of some counterproductive habits we’ve picked up along the way. Is it a vain hope? Do we re-ally want to be like New Orleans, dazed and confused, half a decade after the storm and still holding out our hands? Easy as it may sound, I don’t. I’d much rather search around in a shed for an axe sharpener. What does an axe sharpener look like anyway? Real enough?

The Survival of the SLICKEST It’s all over the news, a huge topic

of conversation and something everyone can’t fix. The oil spill in the gulf has shaken up business and communities all over Louisiana and Florida. Texas however has been unaffected by this recent disaster. As horrible as the oil spill is for some places in the gulf, our beaches remain, which adds an extremely inviting factor to our coasts. In other words our business-es and communities should no longer fret about potential loss of tourists, they will be coming in hordes to repopu-late our island this summer. Businesses no longer need to be wary of hiring people. The recession has been an anomaly to our commu-nity, but the oil spill will help us gain the business we have lost since Ike. The millions of people that visit Galveston each year will double, and once again everyone will have monetary gain. So let’s welcome the oncoming season with open arms and double the staff. Everyone out there hit by the recession, don’t give up hope, and start looking again. This season will be a big one and businesses will be ready to hire. If you are still down on your luck, there are tons of organizations in Galveston willing to help you every step of the way until you are ready to walk on your own. Don’t fret, Galveston. We are back in business and we need to be ready!
