As spring approaches and new growth is in the air our Chap-ter is also growing with new

members, an expanding board and new educational programs for this year. I would like to thank all those members who renewed their membership and welcome our new chapter members! The new 2015 Resource Guides will be distributed at the end of February. I would like to thank those of you who supported our chapter by placing ad-vertisements.

As the board swings into gear, we will be attending the State CAMFT Leadership Conference on February 20-21 in Costa Mesa to receive updates up on CAMFT’s future goals and legislative focus supporting us as practitioners.

Our first extended program on March 13, 2015 is with Dr. Dennis Lowe speaking on, A Practical Approach to Diagnosing According to the DSM V. We have had Dr. Lowe speak many times and he is back by popular demand! He will be guiding us on how to navigate the new DSM V when working with our patients. This will be a well attended event, so I encourage you to make a reservation as soon as possible.

On April 10, 2015 we will be fulfilling our memberships’ request for a speaker on Writing a Professional Will by Gadi Zohar, Esq., LMFT. Various laws and ethical codes require that a therapist make a plan for the quick transition of existing clients and for the proper handling of clinical files in the event of the therapist’s death or incapacity. Since this can become an expensive and cumbersome process, Mr. Zohar (who now works exclusively as an attorney) will help us understand this process as a simple step by step procedure.

I’m also pleased to announce that David Jensen, the State CAMFT Attorney will be back on April 24, 2105 to present at our Legal and Ethical Workshop, Part 3. As many of you know David Jensen is able to make dry material entertaining with his humor and case examples. This is a great way to fulfill our 6 hour licensing renewal requirement!

I look forward to seeing you at our next meetings!

Spring is here! It’s time again to “spring for-

ward”, changing our clocks one hour ahead (on March 8th) and saying good bye to (a not so cold) winter. This is also the time when we hear a lot about “spring cleaning” and clearing out the clutter in order to create spaces for balance and focus. We hope you are finding those moments of peace and

finding ways in which to stay con-nected to the things you love. We hope that being a member of VC-CAMFT is one of those things and welcome you to enjoy the latest edition of The Com-municator. There are many wonderful things planned for 2015 and we would love to have you join us! As always, we welcome your feedback and sugges-tions. Please feel free to send those to Veronica Marchese at [email protected]. Thank you!

SPOTLIGHTCOMMUNITY AGENCY

Trevor Reynolds, MFT, and Dr. Samantha Tamburro, Psy.D, opened their doors to local teens

and families in 2005 and founded, Engage Therapy, a private therapy practice. Over time they quickly realized that some pre-teens, teens, and young adults needed more support than individual therapy. Trevor and Sami envisioned a community centered treatment program; a program that would allow adolescents to receive a higher level of care while remaining at home, attending their local school, and living and healing within this supportive community. Thus in 2012, Engage opened it first of four Intensive Outpatient Programs. Today Engage serves hundreds of families each year through both our private practice and insurance-based programs. At Engage, the overriding mission is to provide local teens and families with the tools they need to FULLY ENGAGE IN LIFE.Today, Engage is home to four community-based intensive outpatient programs. The Engage Treatment Programs support pre-teens (12-13), teens (13-17), and young adults (17-22), struggling with managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, substance use, or other mental health issues. Engage Treatment Programs focuses on helping teens and young adults learn the skills and tools necessary in order to live a healthier and more satisfying life. Engage clients enter our programs seeking guidance at one of the most difficult or challenging times in their lives. Our clients leave not only with the necessary tools to make their goals a reality, but also with hope for a bright future.

Our Programs

Engage Me: Track One (ages 11-13), Track Two (ages 14-17)Engage Me, an Adolescent Mental Health Outpatient Program, is designed for teens struggling with mood disorders including, but not limited

to, depression and anxiety. Our clients participate in group therapy, family therapy, and fun social activities. Our parent support group teaches parents how to aid their teen in the reduction of intrusive and unwanted symptoms, while providing skills to develop healthy structure and boundaries in the home. Our goal is to empower families with the tools necessary to build stronger relationships and improve their quality of life. In the Engage Me program teens can expect to learn new coping skills, better strategies for managing their emotions, and more effective approaches to communication and conflict resolution.

Engage Recharge: (ages 13-17)Engage Recharge, an Adolescent Co-Occurring Intensive Outpatient Program for teens struggling with issues surrounding substance use. Teens focus on learning relapse prevention tools and skills to improve their mental health. Since addiction affects the entire family, we provide family therapy and a parent support group to address the family’s concerns and behaviors in relation to the teen in the program. In addition to relapse prevention tools, teens will learn new coping strategies for life’s challenges, improve conflict resolution skills, and find new ways to have sober fun in the community.

Engage Thrive: (ages 17-22)Engage Thrive, an Adult Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program, is designed for young adults struggling with the transition into adulthood due to symptoms of anxiety, depression, or another mood disorder. The program addresses symptom challenges that have become barriers to their success. Typically, our clients are working on

developing skills to manage the new demands of college, trade school, or full time employment while dealing with anxiety, depression, or other mood symptoms. Since not every young person has the same goal, Engage Thrive individualizes its treatment for each client through weekly case management and family therapy.

Engage Therapy: (all ages)Engage Therapy is a group of 12 mental health clinicians and serves men, women, adolescents, children and families who struggle with a wide range of issues. Each of our clinicians on staff has a specific area of therapeutic concentration. However, as a team we focus on creating authentic relationships with our clients to help them address personal challenges and achieve their goals.

At Engage, we understand that at times life can be overwhelming. The satisfaction that we once experienced in our families, relationships, and day-to-day lives can be replaced by tension, anxiety, worry, stress, pressure, or resentment. We believe that these challenges can be a turning point for teens, families, and individuals to become stronger and healthier. At Engage, we know that life’s struggles are often an invitation for growth, healing and change. If you have any additional questions regarding Engage please feel free to reach out at (805) 497-0605.

SB578, also sponsored by Sen. Wyland, clarifies the amount of time required to retain client records, making it consistent with the requirement for psychologists of seven years (or for 7 years after a minor client’s 18th birthday. The law applies to LPCs, LEPs and LCSWs, as well as MFTs.

AB1775, sponsored by Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez, adds the streaming, downloading, and viewing of child pornography by any electronic or digital media to the mandated reporting law. CAMFT is in the process of developing guidelines for clinicians.

2015 Advocacy PrioritiesThe BBS has completed a package to streamline the hours of supervised pre-licensed. This will also modify the log sheet used to record hours, and will decrease the amount of time necessary to process applications for licensure. CAMFT has requested the BBS to introduce legislation detailing these changes in 2015. You can review the proposal at the CAMFT website under BBS Updates.

CAMFT is also interested in allowing MFTs to work in Federal Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which are mostly found in rural areas, as well as in schools.

2015 LegislationMany bills will be introduced in the next few months. These will include:SB11 – requires police officers to take additional mental health training. The California Legislative Counsel interprets Sections 8100 and 8105 of the Welfare and Institutions Code to imply that a therapist must always call police if their patient tells the therapist about intent to harm another. This differs from how CAMFT and other mental health provider groups have interpreted Tarasoff. CAMFT is meeting with other stakeholders to determine how best to address this issue. The CAMFT legal team has also begun amending all educational materials to assure compliance with this

Cathy Atkins, JD, State CAMFT Deputy Executive Directorinterpretation as next steps are being determined.

As of November, 2014 LMFTs were able to become Medi-Cal providers. The applications are available but the reimbursement rates are not available yet.

Federal LegislationMedicare: CAMFT continues to lobby key Congresspersons to co-sponsor H.R. 3662, the bill to enable LMFTs to become Medicare providers. In response to CAMFT’s request for grassroots efforts by the members, an additional five congresspersons added onto the bill.

Veterans Affairs: In summer, HR. 5398 was proposed to would remove the requirement that LMFTs must be a graduate of a COAMFTE accredited school in order to be eligible for employment in the VA. CAMFT hopes to see this legislation reintroduced in early 2015.

BBS UpdatesThe MFT application process has been reduced to four months. It was previously as long as eleven months.

Cathy Atkins, representative

from State CAMFT

The BREEZE system, which facilitates online license renewal and informational updates is now up and running.

Licensing exams start using the DSM 5 on January 1, 2016.

The BBS is no longer taking new applications for becoming CE providers, but will be renewing existing providers until July 15, 2015. CAMFT has been approved as an agency that can take new and renewing CE provider applications.

Cathy described the various committees that CAMFT operates. Members are encouraged to participate in CAMFT committees as a way to serve the profession and to see how CAMFT operates at the State level. See the CAMFT website, www.CAMFT.org for a description of the commimttees.

Cathy reminded us that EBSCO Host is a valuable resource that CAMFT provides to members at considerable expense. EBSCO Host allows access to thousands of articles on a multitude of subjects related to psychotherapy and the behavioral sciences.

If you do not know of the amazing programs and resources of NAMI please go to NAMIventura.org. We need your participation and help in letting our clients, community and friends know about this great local community event. Saturday, May 2 at 10amThe walk will wind along the Ventura ocean front starting at the Ventura Pier. I did this last year and my group and I had a beautiful and fantastic walk. It was a great way to get some friends together for a healthy happening and support the efforts of NAMI; a needed community resource for community health and well-being. If you want to register to walk or donate please click on the following link. Our goal this year is to raise $1000!!!! If we have 50 walkers that is only $20 per walker.
