Vol. XV Issue I September 2014 St. Joseph School K-6

Since the end of August everyone

from pre-school teachers to cafeteria

workers have been responding to chal-

lenges to either donate to Amyo-

trophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) re-

search or volunteer to get doused with

buckets of ice water. Many were doing

both.

This campaign started when Ms.

Catherine Zinno, a former pre-school

teacher, urged her co-workers to take

up such a challenge in honor of Ms.

Lynn Sterka. She’s a pre-school aide

who’s been diagnosed with ALS. The

Pre-School teachers responded, and

the challenges quickly escalated from

there to the Middle and High School

campuses.

When these challenges began in oth-

er states, the funds raised went to the

ALS Association. That organization

Elementary School teachers and staff react to a barrage of ice water.

They’re three new teachers in the Elementary and Middle Schools this year.

Their names are Ms. Katie Hiegel, Ms. Jessica Weakley and Ms. Nicole Gooch.

Ms. Hiegel teaches 2nd grade. She graduated from the University of Central

Arkansas (UCA) She recently married Daniel Hiegel, who’s a graduate of St.

Joseph School. They have two dogs, both of which were adopted from animal

shelters.

Ms. Weakley teaches 5th grade and graduated from UCA. She and her hus-

band Ross live in Maumelle.

Ms. Gooch teaches 4th grade and graduated from UCA. She lives in Conway

with her husband Chris, and they have a son named Cameron. All three teach-

ers think St. Joseph is a great place to teach.

Raccoon Talks Recycling

St. Joseph’s 75 Pre-School

students learned about the

importance of recycling on Sept.

12.

Angie Howard, the Recycling

Coordinator for the Conway Sanita-

tion Department, showed the chil-

dren how trash can be converted

into useable materials through recy-

cling. She also had help with her

presentation from Ricky Raccoon, a

talking robot that moves about in a

child-sized recycling truck.

That organization supports embryonic

stem cell research. Because Arkansas

Bishop Anthony Taylor and the Catholic

church in general finds embryonic stem

cell research “morally unacceptable,” the

Bishop required local donations go to the

Saint John Paul II Medical Research

Institute in Iowa City, Iowa. It does adult

stem-cell research which does not require

the destruction of human life.

The combined efforts of all participants

collected $764 for ALS research. Perhaps

one day such work will defeat this degen-

erative condition for which there is no

cure at present.

After-School Artists Show Creativity

By Nathan Hambuchen

Ms. Shannon Chamoun’s after-school artists had their first session on Sept. 11th.

The students made decorative prints by applying three colors of paint to a sheet of tin

foil. Cue-tips were used to draw designs in the paint. A white sheet of paper was

lightly pressed onto the tin foil and then removed thus producing the art. (Top Left)

Arianna New gets paint from Ms. Chamoun. (Top Right) Olivia Pasierb, Ashlyn

Cleary and Emma Pasierb apply their paint. (Lower Left) Jacob Bailey is pleased

with his design. (Lower Right) Eva Palmer & Tyler Van Dyke like their results too.

The Middle School Science Club met

for the first time on September 16.

Sponsor Lindsey Thompson gave the

club members an experiment testing

two natural forces pulling against

each other.

The children made boats from tin foil

and placed them in tubs of water.

Pennies were then deposited in the

boats one at a time. The object was to

find how many of the pennies the

boats could hold before sinking.

The forces of gravity and buoyancy

were at work. The gravitational force

was determined by the weight of the

tin foil and the pennies it contained.

Buoyancy came from the weight of

the water displaced by the boats. The

boats remained afloat as long as the

force of buoyancy was greater than

gravity. If the boats were overloaded

they would tip and leak.

Megan Garrett and Maggie Mooney’s

boat held 151 pennies.

Runners Stay In Shape

St. Joseph Elementary School participated in Run@School Day on September 19.

Run@School Day was created by the Road Runners Club of America as a nation-

wide fitness effort to get people moving. Here locally, the Conway Regional Health

and Fitness Center also participated in the run as part of its commitment to fight

childhood obesity.

Students in grades K-3 ran around their playground under the supervision of Physi-

cal Eduation teacher Karen Vandivere and Conway Regional Fitness Specialist

Hannah Turnbough. These same children also participate in St. Joseph’s After-

School Running Club which meets two days a week.

The club’s efforts ultimately culminate with “Kids Run Arkansas” which is a one

and three-mile fun run/walk held in Laruel Park. This year’s run will be held April

17. Hundereds of children participate, and St. Joseph has been recognized for the last

couple of years for having the largest number of kids taking part.

Autumn Skinner, Braxton Thessing, Aniston Potts & Abigail Arellano are running.

Richard Rappold leads the way with this group of runners.

Cell Study Excites Science Students By Jacob Lampe and Britt Stroth

UCA science instructor Mr. Jerry Mimms talks about cell structure. These

microscopes let the class see cells close up. Ms Shannon Chamoun directs

students into the inflatable cell. UCA science and math student Catherine

Miller shows students a cell’s parts. Senior Journalist Jacob Lampe stands

beside the inflatable cell to give perspective to its size.

Mr. Jerry Mimms, a Science Education Instruc-

tor at the University of Central Arkansas, came

to the Middle School on September 3rd to teach

our students about cells. He talked about the

different kinds of cells and what’s inside them.

The students saw power-point presentation

about cells and then looked at some through

some powerful microscopes. The most exciting

thing was crawling inside a large, inflatable

mock-up of a cell in which the students were

able to see its different parts and how they func-

tion. Ella Crowder, Noah Hoelzeman, Harley

Campbell and Principal Matt Tucker Jordyn Hoelzeman, Ms.Hallie Leicht, Brett

Get To Know Our New Students by Kyle Schaefers & Austin Welter

3rd Grade

Friends are God’s way

of taking care of us.

A boy came home from his first day of school. His mother asked “What did you learn today?” “Not enough,” the boy

replied. “They said I have to go back tomorrow!”

“What’s the king of all school supplies?” one girl said to another. “I don’t know, what?” the second girl replied. “The

ruler,” the first girl said.

“Hey, Mom. I got a 100 in school today!” a boy told his mother. “That’s great,” she said. “What in?” “A 40 in Reading

and a 60 in Spelling, ” the boy answered.
