    INTRO U TION

    Prior to 1950 some technical pamphlets and circulars regarding specifications for individual itemsof work were issued. in order to make them available and to facilitate easy reference, these werecompiled and updated and printed for the first time in 1950 as CPWD Specifications for works.subsequently, with the expansion of CPWD works and experience gained, the specifications werefirst revised in 1962 and thereafter in 1967 and 1977. This is the fourth revision of CPWDSpecificatfons.These specifications will be now published in six volumes as follows:

    A chapter on new products will also be added in the last volume for the benefit of all the users.Salient features of this revised volume II are as under:-a) Like CPWD Specifications 1977, this revised, updated and rewritten edition will be made

    applicable to CPWD works allover the country and is, therefore, named as specifications .

    However, while preparing tender documents forworks at different places, specifications oflocalmaterials must be taken into account and brought out specifically in specifications for particular .item of work.

    b) The important modifications/changes under the various chapters are as follows. I) MORTAR

    a) Frequency of testing of Municipal or Local water used in construction has beenincreasd and different limits of chloride provided for R.C.C. and other items.

    b) Cement: Reference made of portland cement of 33 grade, 43 grade, 53 grade andmasonry cement etc.

    c) Sand: Different requirement specifically provided for use of sand for masonrymortar, for plaster and for concrete works.

    d) Mix mortars - Scope has been enlarged to include various possible combinationsincluding use of new materials like fly ash.e) Improvement made in sketches of cementgoctown in ~oad bearing wall and detmls

    of mixer provided.II) CONCRETE :

    a) Up~dating has been done with regard to BEE- VEE designations workability andslump, admixture, curing and relevant standards.

    b) Details for power loader added, similarly specifications for batch type concretemixers have been provided now.

    c) Provision-of 10 extra cement in hand mixing andunder water concreting, providedwith regard to pavements also.d) Para for construction joints added for mass concrete works.

    III) R.C.C. Worka) Design mix concrete introduced for mix M 20 to M 35 concrete.b) Cube test designated as mandatory lab test and a new acceptance criteria of Re

    bound Hammer introduced as mandatory field test.c) Use of timber in form workcompletely eliminated and steel form work introduced.d) R.C.C. door window frames introduced.e) Figures for special type of expansion joints in structures in seismic zones provided

    and figures of hooks and beJ1q~added.IV) BRICK WORK

    a) Definitions introduced in the terminology.

    b) New types of bricks like clay-fly ash bricks, fly ash-lime bricks, Calcium silicatebricks, introduced

    c) Sampling mortar, classification brought in line with B.I.S. codes.d) Separate tolerance provided in non-modular bricks, but reduced from the existing

    specifications appreciably.e) Tolerance for verticaIity introduced: Para on cavity walls has been improved.g) Sketches of cavity walls included.

    V) STONE WORKa) Details of metal cramps modified and improved. AluminiuITJ.'cramps deleted.b) Specification for hollow and cement concrete blocks added.c) Specifications for stone block masonary units introduced.d) Details provided for various kinds of stones for water absorption limits & tests.

    VI) MARBLE WORKa) Specifications for Rajnagar Marble introduced.b) Use of 8mm thick tiles introduced.c) Negative tolerance and percentage of tolerance also changed.. ,.-=d) Use of factory made slabs and tiles provided.

    c) Provisions made in latest BIS codes have been considered and incorporated in these specifications to the extent they are applic(ible. Special mention has been made of the BIS codes dealingwith the mode of measurements of building works in accordances with which these specifications have been rationalised.

    d) Comprehensive lists of Indian standards relevant to various-chapters, have been appended forready reference. These standards may be referred to for detailed information on the subject.

    e) The lists of mandatory test for-various materials have also been appended duly updated for readyreference so that quality control of the works could be ensured.

    The sketches have been revised and re-arranged so as to make them clearer and more compact.Additional sketches have been included wherever found necessary. The sketches relating to a

    'c particular chapter have been appended at the end of relevant chapter. As earlier, clause Nos havebeen shown on each sketch to facilitate easy refe en

    The editing of specification of Vol. II has been done by Sh. Vasu Dev, Ex. Engineer (S S) I CDOc.P. W.D. His ~taffhave done an excellent work in drawing revised and improved sketches, preparingand typing the manuscripts etc. and getting the books printed.
