Hi y'all in the South. Anyway, I am now almost waist deep in the Sea of Confusion surrounding Our Redeemer. The good news is that the confusion is not nearly as bad as some people were led to believe. Like me! I am still overwhelmed by the number of people stepping up to help, offering advice, and generally being available for whatever we need. It makes my job, and the other council member's jobs much easier to manage. Please keep it up. We are making significant strides in the realm of recognizing the needs of the church, both repairs that are needed now, and future capital improvements, such as the parking area for those in need at the front of the church. This, of course, involves removing the two conifers, perhaps altering the sign and flower area, and either installing a fence or greenery to satisfy the town's requirements. We are looking into many areas to improve the quality and sustainability of the property. As we enter into the darker, colder, wetter (and we hope snowier) months, we need to keep smiling, and praying, that the winter is tolerable, and that Spring will eventually follow, as it always does. More good news…we also enter the Advent season following Thanksgiving, and will be able to observe the blessed event of Christmas…not so much the secular, but the spiritual reason for the season. God Bless. John Torelli Council President

A Message From the Pastor

"It's beginning to look a lot like …." Don'tfinish that song correctly yet!

We don't like to wait, do we? Somestores have had Christmas stuff out forweeks-even months now! Some people arehurriedly planning shopping trips, card writing, all kinds of things already. But there is somuch going on.

As I write this, Halloween hasn't evenhappened yet. Election Day is coming (evenmore scary than Halloween!). Veterans Day. Stewardship Pledge Day and Voter's meeting. Thanksgiving! Then all the Sundays inAdvent, President Torelli's Birthday, a fewother birthdays I'm sure, and all theWednesdays in Advent. There is much to do,and much to celebrate, before we get toJesus' birthday.

November is a time to pause, not rush. Itis a time to stop and give thanks, not rush toopen presents. We have so much to bethankful for: for our nation that holds free andopen elections; for our Veterans who have orare currently serving in the military; for ourcongregation that is so generous in giving oftime, talents, and financial resources; for ournation's founding and for the cooperation thatexisted between the first settlers and thenative people here.

Then Advent begins. A time of preparing, waiting, watching for theMessiah's birth. We knowwhen we will celebrate him,but still we wait. And wait.

And that is good for our souls. For when we wait, we ponder, we

remember what is good and helpful andblessing us in our lives. We remember Godsending Jesus into our world and our lives tobe the Messiah. We sense the Holy Spiritmoving in our midst a little bit better thanbefore. And all that waiting lets us be evenmore thankful for what God has done and

given, and for those others in our lives. We live in a world that likes wants and

needs met immediately! NOW! We drivethrough for fast food, we microwave things inminutes that used to take hours, we use ourDVR and watch shows faster withoutcommercials.

But sometimes we wait. We need towait. It is good for us to wait. And bethankful. And ponder. And praise God for allhe is, for all he has done, and for all hepromises us for the future.

Blessed waiting! Blessed November! And blessings on your giving thanks eachday!

~Pastor Dan

All Saints SundayAll Saints Day is November 1st

each year. We celebrate thatday the first Sunday inNovember every year. One ofthe traditions on All Saints is toremember those in our lives

who have passed away since the last AllSaints day. We do so to remember the giftGod gave us in them, to thank God for thatgift, and to remember that they are nowbasking in the heavenly kingdom surroundedby the light and love of God. We willremember those from our congregation whohave died in the past year. Join in worshipthis day for this special service.

Bible StudyWe have an almost weekly Bible Study thatmeets on Wednesdays at 11:30 am (all but2 Wednesdays). We have just begun ournd

study of Revelation, that big scary last bookof the Bible. Come wrestle through this booktogether! We will be meeting Nov 2 , (NOTnd

each week or for as many as you can! (Bythe way, if there is interest in Bible Study atanother time or day of the week, speak withPastor!)

Day of Fasting for World HungerI (Pastor Dan) am a big fan of theWorld Hunger Appeal of ourEvangelical Lutheran Church inAmerica. One of the ways to bringsome support to this hunger effortis by taking a day and fasting -going without food - until 6 pm. Fasting is an ancient spiritual

practice, denying oneself and needs to focusmore on God. Fasting here frees up tworesources: 1) some time NOT spentpreparing, eating, or cleaning up from meals, and 2) dollars that you would have spent onfood for those meals. On November 17 -th

one week before most of us will eat way morefood than we should - I invite you to fast forthe day. PLEASE be sure to drink water orjuice to stay hydrated (and coffee to stayapproachable….). If you are diabetic or oncertain medications and can't fast, pleasedon't, but join in the day as well! I will preparea sheet of devotions that you can use at mealtimes for your reflection on that day. Thenjoin in a potato soup supper at 6 pm at thechurch (come later as needed) to break yourfast and to share some of your reflectionswith others. There will be a sign-up sheet onthe bulletin board by the kitchen so we knowhow much soup to make. After the meal,we'll have a brief worship. For our offering wecan contribute the amount we would havespent on meals that day. Please see me withany questions, sign up soon, and look for thedevotional sheet soon!

Weather! It Happens!!"Winter is coming" is not just a line fromGame of Thrones. It is true! AAACK!! In theevent of bad weather, here's the drill: If youdon't feel safe to come to worship, DON'T. Ifthe governor closes the roads, worship will be

cancelled. It will be a rare occasion when WEcancel worship, but YOU are urged to useyour own good judgment about whether youshould be on the roads or not.

Thankfulness

As Thanksgiving draws near, we arereminded to give thanks for all the blessingswe have received throughout the year. Takea minute to be thankful for all the fellowshipopportunities that have been given to you thispast year. Coffee fellowship time, hikes, baseball games, potlucks, and other churchactivities give us time to connect with ourchurch family and for that we are trulythankful.

If you have not had a chance to hostcoffee fellowship this year, there are stilldates available on the calendar. Perhaps youwould like to share your favorite fall cookie orthat coffee cake you only make once a year. As we transition from summer fruits andvegetables to winter ones, now is the perfecttime to prepare a warm fruit compote for yourchurch family to sample during coffeefellowship. A selection of crackers andcheese never goes out of season. Pleasetake a minute to look at the available dateson the bulletin board and select a date tosurprise us with your culinary efforts.

Fall Clean-up is November13 . The Fellowship Committeeth

will be providing lunch for ourclean-up crew. Remember, manyhands make light work so plan tohelp get God's house sparkling

clean for the coming months, then stay forlunch.

November 20 is our fall voter's meetingth

and potluck. The sign-up sheet is posted onthe bulletin board. Now is a great time toprepare and share your favorite fall casserole, bread, or dessert with your church family. Wealways appreciate help with set-up and clean-up for our potlucks.

Be Sure to Vote -- Twice!

With the 2016 electioncampaign finally coming to anend (mercifully, in my opinion),I'd encourage everyone in thecongregation to get out andvote on Election Day, November 8 . But don'tth

stop there. You, as members of OurRedeemer, have the privilege of voting twice!Inside this issue of the Messenger's Voiceyou will find your "ballot," which is the pledgeslip for our upcoming stewardship campaign. And I believe that this is one vote that youcan feel good about casting, since OurRedeemer has continued to progress very

nicely this past year under the spiritualleadership of Pastor Dan May. So be sure tovote "yes," for Our Redeemer in the comingyear, by generously pledging your time andfinancial support, and by returning yourpledge slip with your offering by the end ofour stewardship campaign.

The theme of ourcampaign is "Unlocking YourStewardship Gifts," and it willkick off on Sunday,November 6 . The campaignth

will end on Sunday, November 20 , and weth

will also have our annual StewardshipPot-Luck Dinner that Sunday after the 11 amservice. I am also happy to announce thatmembers of the congregation have set up a$12,500 matching gift for the campaign. Thismeans that EVERY offering made onNovember 6 , 13 or 20 , whether a regularth th th

offering or a special offering, will be matcheddollar-for- dollar up to $12,500. This gives usthe opportunity, if the gift is fully matched, togive our church budget a very welcome$25,000 boost going into Advent. Please dowhat you can to help us reach our goal!

Finally, the Upstate NY Synod's specialGenerosity Project program, which wasoriginally scheduled to be held at MessiahLutheran Church in Rotterdam on October15 , has been rescheduled for Saturday,th

January 28, 2017. The object of this programis to highlight how our stewardship concernschange throughout life and - while there wereplenty of people who were about my agesigned up for the program - we were lackingstudents and young adults who could attend.Hopefully, this new date will allow for greaterparticipation by our young people. Please letme know if you might have any interest inattending.

Do this in Remembrance of Me

Worship stands at the center of our life offaith. Through Scripture, prayer, baptism, andcommunion we are nurtured in faith and sentout into the world to share the Good News. Through the Sacrament of Holy Communion,we are reminded of God's love through Jesus. As Pastor reminds us, Jesus healed the sick, preached the good news to the poor and, onthe cross, opened his arms to all. As a"community", we remember Jesus' death, resurrection and ascension.

On November 6 , we will be celebratingth

the First Communion of six children. Theyare:

Connor BlickAddie Countermine

Grace PachuckiAmelie and Owen Smith

Brady Weatherwax

Please celebrate this blessed event with thechildren and their families during a receptionbetween services.

Ever wonder what the children arelearning in Sunday School? Well, let me tellyou! This month, the “Tween class” (4 , 5 th th

& 6 grades) will be studying God's promisesth

as told in Genesis 17, 27 and 49. They willalso finish painting their pillowcases thatfeatures one of the stories they have learned. The pillowcases will be donated to thechildren's ward at an area hospital. Theyounger classes will be learning about AllSaints Day and how Joseph unexpectedlyrises to power.

On November 20 , the children will beth

making Thanksgiving cards and filling baskets for our shut-ins. This is always a lot of fun! We encourage the parents to share in thisministry by stopping down in the SundaySchool area to help their child fill a basket, and deliver one to a shut-in.

The Youth Group will be raking leaves onVeteran’s Day (Nov. 11 ). We ask as manyth

youth (and parents, if available) attend aspossible. The more hands we have, the morewe can accomplish! Once the raking is done,we will gather back at church to enjoy pizza!

Learning doesn't end once you makeyour Confirmation! I encourage adults to joinCharles Meyer for ACES between services onSunday mornings as he explores the themesReturn from Babylon and the Rise and Fall ofSomolai Temple. (There will be no ACES onNovember 27 due to the holiday weekend.)th

About the Property

The Property Committee along withPastor Dan have been working on the “wishlist” for future investments and projects thatshould be (or) need to be done to make ourlives better, reduce cost or replace aging, worn out equipment. We have some cool

things happening with some of the hotteritems on the list and are working on themalready. The list is growing, but if you haveany thoughts/ideas, please see Pastor Danwith them. There will be more to come as wemake progress.

I also want to remind everyone that wedepleted our building renovation fund whenwe had the southeast roof of the FellowshipHall replaced. That fund is one source offunding for some of the projects we need todo. This will be one of the sources of incomethat we can utilize to do some of theimprovements, such as the portico roofs overthe playground door and the "back" entrancedoor.

Winter is coming soon and I am startingto make plans for snow removal etc. Rightnow, I am planning to use the same snowremoval guy as last year (Mike Rogers), but Iam open to new alternatives. If you have anysuggestions, please see me, leave a note inmy mailbox or give me a call. I reallyappreciate your support. I am also looking fora spreader for the ice melt (the particles aretoo large for our old spreader to work). If youhave an old fertilizer spreader that you wouldbe willing to donate, please let me know. Theonly other option will be to purchase a newone.

Faith Formation for the21 Centuryst

This is the focus of a two year long classI will be involved in. I should say “we” will beinvolved in, since I represent Our Redeemerwhile learning what scholars and othercongregations are doing to prepare for thenext century of faith development.

Many of us have seen the congregationswe grew up with change - sometimes for thegood and sometimes not. We have seen howour lives are impacted by modern technology. We have seen our neighborhoods changed in

terms of new families moving in, or changedincome levels of those who stayed. Perhaps, you feel that any sense of neighborhood hasbeen lost now. All of these issues have aneffect on our church congregations.

How do we exist in such a multi-ethnic,everyone busy, groups of people unchurchedenvironment? First, we pray. Then we learnnew ideas and see what works for us. That iswhat this online class is all about. There aretwo main books, so far. Once every fourweeks we “meet” online to discuss whatwe’ve read and how we could apply it to ourcongregations’ situations.

The main reason to inform you of thisclass is that time and again I will be asking foryour opinions and ideas. Actually, I need ateam who will meet & talk with me on aregular basis (once a month or so) to addyour thoughts, possibly during coffee hour. Ifyou are interested in ways to help ourcongregation grow both in numbers and inspirit, please let Pastor Dan or me know.
