Lianne Canarick, a camper for 7 years is spending a “gap year” in total emersion into life and living in Nanjing, China. A world away, Lianne shares her insight with us. Stephanie & I recently received this wonderful letter from her…we look forward to her safe return when she will be attending Cornell in the fall and becoming a counselor in 2013! Dear Mitch & Stephanie, It really does feel as if I am a world away. China is so different from America! I am having an incredible experience so far though. I have seen numerous tourists’ sights like the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square, and I am already able to hold basic conversations in Chinese. Although I am sometimes homesick, I am extremely happy that I chose to spend a year in China. It is almost as if I started a new life here full of numerous interesting opportunities. I have a new “family”, new friends and a new school. I am currently living in Nanjing, where I have been studying Chinese for about twenty hours a week. Chinese is extremely difficult to learn, but it is also new and exciting. Every day I see and experience new aspects of Chinese traditions and cultures as well, which is very interesting. I actually want to thank you though. At Camp Towanda, I learned how to get along with many different types of people. Each year, as our bunk settings were adjusted, we all had to learn to adjust to a new “family.” However, by the time we reached The Dorm in 2008, the alma mater we wrote, “36 perfect strangers, now sitting here as one...”! Camp Towanda gave me the ability to create incredible bonds with people who were once complete strangers to me. Without that experience, I do not think that I would have been able to adjust to my crazy Chinese life as well as I did. Not only are the Chinese students extremely different from me, but the other American participants are also very different. Each participant has a different personality, attitude, and even maturity level. When I arrived in China, I was actually placed with 3 complete strangers (homestay) and I was expected to call these people, my family, and their home, my house. I think I was able to deal with this transition more easily than the other participants because of my incredible experiences at Towanda. Right now,I truly feel as if these people are family. I really do miss my years as a camper, but I expect to return as a counselor soon, don’t you worry, Mitch! I also wanted to share a quick story with you. When I landed in China, I immediately tried to log on to Facebook. However, since Facebook is blocked in China (like at camp), I decided to check my email instead (I know, email is blocked, too!). I had an email from Facebook saying that I had a Friend Request from a name I did not recognize. After a week or so, when I figured out how to use a proxy to get around the ban, I logged into Facebook and looked at the profile picture; I couldn’t figure it out, she was younger than me and we did not have mutual Facebook friends. However, I knew I knew her; She was my camp little sister during my Dorm summer! Although it had been over 4 years, she remembered me and reached out to me. How great! It is truly incredible that you and Stephanie create such a close-knit community out of such a large number of counselors and campers! If anyone ever wants to speak to a former camper, I would love to speak with them about my great experiences, as I truly have nothing but positive things to say. Camp Towanda has been such a great and positive benefit and privilege for me. Please tell my Camp Towanda Family I say Hi! Again, Thank You! Lianne Happy & Healthy Holidays!

A new venue and a great crowd resulted in a fantastic reunion on November 19th at the Lucky Strike Lanes in West Nyack, NY. Bowling alleys have certainly come a long way from the old days. So much so, our annual “The Weekend before Thanksgiving “ Reunion was a big success, yet again! It was so great to see everyone (campers, parents, friends, staff and alumni) hang out, talk, watch the Flix Highlights from 2011, bowl-pool-air hockey, eat some lunch and get some very cool 90 Year Camp Towanda Souvenirs! Everyone took home a copy of the 2011 FNF, The all-knowing CT 8-ball, the animated

special 90 year custom chocolate bar ad the perennial favorites; including the post-it cube pad, CT pen & pencil, and an array of magnets, bumper and window stickers (remember, if these are spotted on your vehicle or “person”, that’s a pizza party)! For those who were not in attendance, we are happy to

mail you the Flix DVD and Chocolate bar, upon request. Aunt Jo was manning the front door and got these Towanda-ers to sign in:

  • What is really happening at Camp Towanda?

Jared Reiter, Mitch and Stephanie’s oldest son, has been at camp his entire life. In fact, this is also the 23rd year Mitch & Stephanie own camp and Jared will be 23 in April! At that time he will be graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree from Boston University,

having also studied business, hospitality and green technology, as well as being on several committees and clubs. He served as a founding father for the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity on campus, and creator of the famed Cheese, Milk & Pickle comic strip (see this issue for the

latest panel). Jared intends on continuing his passion and love of Towanda after graduation by working full time in all aspects of the camp operation and preparation. This coming summer, he brings his boys into their 6th summer together,

as their CLUB Group Leader; the pinnacle of the Camp Towanda experience!

Jared shares his insight into what he sees as some of the benefits of camp that may not necessarily be realized when parents are first considering a camp.

It’s often been said that camp fosters lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories and that one leaves camp as a better person. But how is that possible? Is camp really that….great? Besides living together for an action packed, energy driven summer sharing experiences like the 5th of July, AirBands, Electionality, Rope Burning and Girls’ Sing; all that can’t be replicated anywhere else! Is there more to camp than playing outside without the worry of homework while playing, laughing, learning, improving and just having a great interactive experience? Sure, we get you to try new things, like conquer the climbing wall, and vanquish any inner doubt as you tryout for the play. We may even get you to get up on a wakeboard or toast a good marshmallow or dress up funny for some show in front of your camp friends. But why is it, that even after only one summer you call your camp friends your brothers and sisters? Why is there nowhere else you would rather be and that for 10 months out of the year you wish you were back in Honesdale, PA? I mean, the bug juice isn’t that good! There’s a science behind camp, behind the Towanda way of life and it starts with you. That’s right, YOU are the key part of the equation. You, as an individual have your own unique likes and dislikes, pros and cons, opinions and ideas and when you come to Towanda, when you get off that bus and like a tidal wave, crash upon the shores of Niles Pond Road, you come with other people who are just like you. Well, just

like you, in regards to having their own individuality. In fact, they are exactly just NOT like you. And it is this difference that ultimately brings you together! At Towanda, we take this difference and we do several things with it. We fill it with those typical camp experiences I have mentioned and provide a “comfort zone” that allows you the opportunity to showcase your talents and quirks and contribute to the good of camp making it stronger and better. So far, this part of camp is easy; it’s the next part that does the trick, and in turn, is trickier! Here, we take that difference and open it up. We stretch it, rip it, fold it and blend it… through patience and experience!Whether it’s from listening to Mitch’s weekly “Ideals Of Camp Towanda” at the end of Friday night services or anyone’s sermon for that matter, or reflecting upon the day with your bunkmates giving you a chance to express your feelings towards the group or from participating in something like Fear Burning where you earn your friends’ trust and they, in turn, earn yours. At Camp Towanda, we all appreciate not only just the experience of camp, but also the people you experience camp with. And this is the reason why you wish everyday was a day at Camp Towanda. Can’t wait to see everyone in June!

CASTS SPELL OVER CAMP!You don’t have to be a master of broom balancing or have a degree in witchcraft or wizardry to take part in Towanda’s latest creative activity. Campers and counselors alike compete in teams of 9, flying around on broomsticks showcasing their Qudditch talents! Ok, ok, ok (Alright! Alright! Alright! (had to….thanks Case!)), so you’re not actually flying on magic brooms, but as entertaining as it is to watch people running around with field hockey sticks between their legs dodging and throwing volleyballs, it’s 1000 times more fun to play! Towanda’s adaptation of the traditionally non-muggle sport encompasses the best aspects of camp’s favorite activities blending together capture the flag, team handball and most appropriately, GHOST (the real reason people come to Towanda). Players are broken up into four different categories: chasers, beaters, keepers and seekers. Chasers are only allowed 3 steps and then must pass or shoot when in the offensive half of the field. In the defensive half, they have freedom to move anywhere. If hit by a bludger (dodgeball), you must return to your goals and touch a post to get back into game play. The object is to score in one of the three opposing goals with a quaffle (volleyball), each score worth 10 points. Furthermore, chasers are not limited to the constraints of the field and can “fly” beyond the marked edge. Beaters stand beyond the marked perimeter and are not allowed to enter the field. Their goal is to throw bludgers (dodgeballs) at the opposing chasers. Bludgers can only be returned to beaters by chasers. Keepers are not affected by bludgers and must protect all 3 goals. Each team has one seeker. He or she wears a pinnie and a flag. If hit by a bludger or if the flag is pulled out, seekers follow the same procedure as chasers to resume game play. The snitch (no it’s not attached to Casper!) is a tennis ball placed beyond the opposing goals. The snitch must be returned to the home half of the field safely to end the game and give your team an additional 50 points. Seems like a lot, but compared to the endless rules of Ghost, Quidditch is a simple game! So read up on your Harry Potter, and get ready to never want to leave your bunk without a broomstick! Who knows, maybe this coming summer’s Olympic teams will be Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff and Seth Mishula will return for another unforgettable break! - J.R.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Alumni Excitement throughout the ages!As we approach the great big 90 Year Alumni Reunion, folks are digging into their memory chests; Arthur Marks reminisces circa 1950; He’s the one in the Towanda T…..

Arthur adds: Fred Baff, who I believe became a veterinarian in Connecticut is beside me on the left. His sister Gerry also attended camp. The counselor with the specs was involved with the arts and made the wildcat out of plaster.Oddly, the one thing I remember about that year was a craze for ukulelesthat spread through the boys’ cabins.

Further information and registration for the Alumni Reunion in June is available in the alumni section of the website or you can scan this QR code:
