In the great crises of life we are brought faceto face with certain issues and are calledupon to make decisions of such importancethat they often require reversion of ideasand ideals, even of our most cherished prin-

ciples as hitherto conceived, and when such a cri-sis comes it will be nothing short of mental, moral,and spiritual suicide to shirk or evade the issue, nomatter what the cost. Consistency is said to be ajewel, but if we would be truly wise, we must beready to change or revise our ideas whenever occa-sion really demands.

The Rosicrucian teaching has always been inconformity with the Bible dictum “Thou shalt notkill”. No qualification was made and some havecarried this idea to such extremes that they wouldnot kill a fly. But the majority rightly felt that theinjunction was not intended to cover pests andmicro-organisms which take such a terrible toll ofhuman life; these things being a manifestation ofevil thoughts, they are without the pale.

These people have no intention of allowing theirbodies or the bodies of their children to be overrunby vermin rather than to kill the pests and theyrealize that extermination of insects was a greatbasic factor in America’s success at Panama. Infact, it turned the balance from failure to successand this principle should be applied wherever nec-essary.

They feel that it would be a foolish applicationof the injunction “thou shalt not kill” to allowbeasts or prey or poisonous reptiles to roam aboutamong us to endanger our lives, and they wouldcheerfully kill to remove such a menace from thecommunity. In their code of ethics the injunction

involves only the idea that it is wrong to kill forfood, for sport, or for profit.

To kill a human being seemed so remote a pos-sibility to most of us that it was not consideredeven as a contingency and we always denouncedcapital punishment, both on the ground that it isbasically wrong and that it is worse than useless,for when we free the spirit of a murderer from hisbody, we liberate him in the spiritual world wherehe can and often does work on others to influencethem to similar crimes.

Therefore it is better to restrain him in a prisonand strive to reform him so that even if he does notregain his liberty in this life, he will in future ex-istences respect the sanctity of life of others.

But while it is possible thus to deal with the indi-vidual murderer, the case is different when anentire nation runs amuck against another, commit-ting wholesale murder, arson, destruction, and pil-lage. It is then impossible to imprison a wholenation and more drastic means of self-defensemust be found.

In civil life we recognize the law of self-defense,which gives the intended victim of a would-bemurderer the right to slay rather than be slain, andit would be specious to contend that this right islost because a million murderers dress themselvesin uniform, or because they go out boldly andbrazenly, proclaiming their intention to kill, orbecause they lie in ambush by companies insteadof singly. Being the aggressors, they are murderersand their intended victims have an unquestionablemoral right to defend their own lives by slayingthese murderers.

sacred duty of protecting the lives of those who aretoo weak to protect themselves, even though thatinvolves the slaying of murderers.

From the spiritual standpoint, therefore, theright or wrong of war hinges upon the question:who is the aggressor and who is the victirn?

This question is easily answered where war isstarted for the purpose of conquest, and when waris waged for an altruistic purpose, such as theemancipation of a subjected people from physical,industrial, and religious bondage.

It needs no argument to show that in such casesthe oppressor is also the aggressor and the liberatoris the defender of inalienable human rights; he isperforming a sacred duty as “his brother’s keeper”.

When this is once understood we cannot bedeceived by the jack-o-lanterns of diplomacy forwe have a true light, a simple standard of right andwrong.

Having made up our minds on that point, it fol-lows that it is far more noble and heroic to face afiring squad for refusing to enter the army of theaggressor or to flee from our native land or evenjoin the ranks of the defenders in the most menialcapacity than to hold a post of highest honoramong the aggressors.

On the other hand it is a sacred duty in accordwith the highest and noblest spiritual principles tofight among the defenders. The greater the sacri-fice, the greater the merit, and he who shirks thissacred duty to defend hearth and home, kin andcountry, or who fails to fight for the oppressed, isbeneath denunciation. Furthermore, the greater theemergency, the greater the sacrifice that isrequired.

Nor is this great privilege of sacrifice confinedto those of brawn and broad shoulders. Not alonethey are bound by duty; the work behind the linesis even more important and all can share accordingto talent and ability—mental, physical, and finan-cial.

Furthermore, when the occasion arises wheredefense of others or self-defense becomesunavoidable, the harder the campaign is pushed,the shorter and more successful it will be.Therefore no half measure should be tolerated and

neutrality under such circumstances must beregarded at least as a sin of omission.

It is well understood by students of occultismthat wars are instigated and inspired by the divinehierarchies who thus use one nation to punishanother for its sins. Even a superficial study of theBible will furnish many instances. This does notalways mean that the victor is altogether righteous,but it does show that the vanquished nation hasdone wrong and merits the punishment inflicted,usually on account of its arrogance and godless-ness.

Nor is it a sign that because it is victorious for along time and extremely difficult to conquer itenjoys divine favor; at least in a measure. Such acourse may be brought about by the invisible armywho support the arms of the aggressor and prolongthe struggle for the purpose of making the finaldefeat more thorough and disastrous; also to teachthe defenders a lesson that could not be learned ina short decisive struggle.

Such, briefly, is the philosophy of war, from thespiritual viewpoint, regardless of who are thenations involved, and if we apply these principlesand tests to the present war, it must be apparent toeveryone who is not biased and will approach thesubject with a broad and open mind that the mili-tarists of the Central Empires have been preparingfor this war for generations and on the fifth ofJuly, 1914, at the notorious Potsdam Conference,which is now acknowledged by them, they agreedto start the war after a few weeks, during whichthe bankers of these nations were so manipulatingthe markets as to amass the greatest possiblefinancial resources. This stamps the Austro-German war parties as the aggressors, who undertho spell of the race spirits have marshaled theirmillions against all the other nations of the world.

In the beginning of the conflict France andEngland, who were the immediate neighbors of theoutraged Belgians, made her cause their own andacted in that respect as their brother’s keeper. Butbeing unprepared, they have been unable to bringthe struggle to a decisive termination, wherefore itbecame necessary for America to enter the conflictand turn the balance, so that peace may be restored

and safety be secured to those who are too weak toprotect themselves.

It has been a matter of rejoicing that wheneverthe United States has been forced to enter upon amilitary campaign, it has always been either inself-defense or in the still more altruistic role ofdefender and emancipator of the weak. Were this awar of conquest or aggression, it would be betterfor any spiritually minded person to face a firingsquad as already stated than to participate in suchan unrighteous undertaking.

But on the other hand, seeing that the presentstruggle, which is waged for the purpose of crush-ing the militarism of Central Europe, has taken

such a terrible toll of human life, with the strengthof the allied defenders nearly spent, it is the sacredduty of everyone to aid to the very limit, accordingto his spiritual, mental, moral, or physical capaci-ty, either at the front or behind the lines, whereverthe judgment of those who have charge mayrequire his or her service.

Therefore we would urge each and every one ofthe students of the Rosicrucian Fellowship ofwhatever country now defending the cause ofhumanity against the militarist party of the CentralEmpires, to support his or her government to thevery best of his ability that we may soon see“Peace on earth and among men good will”.

MY CONVERSATION WITH A TREE

While I was walking in the Valley of Health,near the Silver Lake, the spirit of a tree came tome and greeted me, saying:

“Agpawan, I am greatly surprised to see youagain. I would like to talk long with you.” Ireceived him cordially and took him to my cabin.

“I now tell you that I am of the plant kingdom.Our good king sent me to carry out his wish—totell you about our place in nature; why we werecreated by the Divine Providence. We plantsmove from place to place where there are goodsurroundings; or depend on the climate or thequality of the soil. We inhabit the entire earth.Some live a long time and some live a short time,and each and all of us is seeking for the same—such as food, protection, liberty, and freedom. Wecannot speak to you of our desire, feeling, agonyand joy. But it is God’s wish. We can do no other-wise but to feel glad for what God has given to us,great and small.

“Now why are we here? I believe without usyou could not live; we give you all you need, yourhouse, sugar, flowers, chairs, pure air, and manythousand things, that I cannot tell them here. Ourtrunks, leaves, barks, roots, living or dead, are notwasted: when we decay on the ground we becomegood fertilizer for those who are to grow, that theymay give good seeds. And when we are cut down

many million years. it will not let go at once. It hasthe soul in its grip and from olden times uses Hopeand Fear to rule it as it reigns.

Let Zal and Rustum bluster as they will Or Hatim call ‘To Supper,’ heed not you!

Fitzgerald says, Zal and Rustum are twin giantsof Persia, Father and Son—and their exploits thoseof power. This reminds us of David, quoted in aformer stanza as having his lips locked (secrecy);David who danced before the temple; i. e., in theHall of Learning again, David the slayer of thegiant Goliath. The very act of the overpowering ofthe mind is an act of a small personality slaying agreat giant “with a pebble”—the Cephas of thegospels, the concentrated mind!

Yes, the battlefield is not physical, but thereforenot less intense. It is like “Kurukshetra,” the bat-tlefield of the Bagavad Gita, the battlefield of thesenses versus the soul, and between the threats ofthe Giants, the mind predicting danger and perdi-tion, come the promises of the Hatim Tai, a greatOriental benefactor. Even the latter has the perfidyof the Devil. “To supper,” he calls. To supper, i. e.,the last meal of the day, of the day of life per-chance. But the Wise Ones heed no sweet voices ofIllusion, as the Voice of the Silence says, nor haveany fear, as Omar says, “Let Zal and Rustum blus-ter as they will—heed not you.”

What is this mind then? Is it the creation of theDevil? Who is that Devil, the fallen Angel, theopposer of God? Put it rather in the plural.Lucifers, the Light Bearers. If we read Max Heindel’swonderful Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception we seeand learn that the Tail end of the Angels’ Life Wavebecame the Lucifer-spirits who have been of greathelp to mankind, although not totally altruistic.They could not, he says, exist without a body, norwould exist in a physical body, like man. But theycould profit by experiences in that body. Man,

however, was not self-conscious of that physicalbody, so they, the Lucifers, helped him to thatphysical consciousness, drawing the woman’sattention to her body—the Saga of the Paradiseapple.

A part of the creative power in man was direct-ed downward and another part used to build thebrain, the seat of the mind. Serpents they arecalled, because the coil of that reptile resemblesthe spiral movement which the probationer per-ceives in front of his own eyes before he is en-chanted into trance and “dreaming true.”

The Gospels again say: Be then wise as theSerpents (the Lucifers—the non-Angels) andharmless as the Doves—the Angels.

And further, referring to their work and the valueof it, the Scripture says again, Why believe inpromises lightly made? Omar says: Some seek theglories of this world; and some sigh for a Prophet’sparadise to come!

Ah! take the “Cash” and let the “credit” go! Norheed the rumble of a distant drum!

And the voice of the Silence says: Take then asmuch as Karma (fate) has in store for thee.

See the credit, the promises of the dream-caus-ing Devil. To-morrow, to-morrow! or the drumwhich announces the coming battle. The hope andthe fear again—but heed thou not!

But Oh Soul, thou who art infinite; thou who arteternal. Thou who art imperishable—who or whatshouldst thou fear?

With Me (the Christ in Man) along the stripof Herbage strown,

That just divides the desert from the sown,Where name of slave and Sultan is forgot And Peace to Mahmut on his golden throne! A book of Verses, underneath a Bough A jug of wine, a Loaf of bread, and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness O! Wilderness were Paradise enow. Of course a coarse mind cannot see in this other

things than a Jane and Tap kind of a ditty, but it issome rungs higher.

The Desert into which Jesus had gone alsobefore getting thirsty for Divine Wisdom or·worldly necessities, is a usual symbol for the De·sire world, or the purgatory of the Rosicrucians(wherein people burn from thirst of unfulfilleddesires).

If then the “Jug of Wine” represents the totalityof the spiritual sacrifice and the “loaf of bread”—the daily bread of the Pater Noster, the gifts of theMother World to the maintenance of the physicalbody and “Thou”—the Christ in man—beside mesinging in the Wilderness the source of DivineInspiration—the Atma buddhi of theTheosophists—descending to the Desire World,then the same becomes Paradise enough—or theMental plane, preponderant:

“How sweet is mortal Sovranty think some!”says Omar.

This reminds us of the offer of the devil to Jesusin the Gospel Saga, putting Him on a High Mount(again the same symbol for the developed mind—the Sultan’s Turret), showing Him the Kingdomsof all the world, but the successful aspirant on thePath retorts: “Va retro Satanas!” He chooses theeverlasting instead of the ephemeral, as the Voiceof the Silence puts it.

The unconcerned love-way of giving enlighten-ment by the God in us ungrudgingly—not evenexpecting a return, without effort, still complete, isso poetically depicted in the lines:

Look to the Rose that blows about us, “Lo! Laughing,” she says. “Into the world I blow, At once the Tassel of my (Golden) Purse! Tear! and its Treasures on the Garden throw!”

Can it be said with more subtlety? That is as Godgives light—and withholds, asking nothing.

Then our Poet points to those who desire world-ly riches; some to benefit Self; some to benefiteveryone; and how they fare ill this conquest of thesoul:

And those who husbanded the golden grain, And those who flung it to the wind like rain; Alike to no such aureate earth are turned As buried once, men want dug up again!

This is the much maligned Judas variety (whohad the purse) and who after surrendering to theHigh Priest hanged himself; i. e., suffocated in thematerial world of material things.

In the struggle upwards the aspirant is confront-ed with poverty—incomprehensible, unwarrantedpoverty—and some cannot stand it. As a resultthey desire riches.

But riches are the opposite pole of life—thematerial pole versus the spiritual—and if onereverses his direction, how can he reach his initialaim? Of which the Christ says, that it is easier fora camel to go through the eye of a needle than fora rich man to reach heaven. Of course if one goesdownstairs he does not get upstairs. But once inthose better circumstances it soon becomes flatand tedious for the late aspirant and so after all“one buried in that golden earth” they want “dugup again”; i. e., delivered from the material crustthat also covers Mother earth. The Voice of theSilence says: “Beware disciple for thy choice isshort but endless!”

One can either become a Sun or a planet, a manor a woman, a toiler or a toiled for, an engineer avan, a plus or a minus.

I do not speak of sexual difference but of spiri-tual; moreover this choice pertains only to the sofar evolved that they can make a choice at all, orotherwise said, the few!

Does Omar speak about rebirth? Surely he does!Listen:

Think in this battered Caravanserai Whose Doorways are alternate day and night

[life and death] How Sultan after Sultan

[personality after personality] With his Pomp,Abode his hour or two; and went his way. They say, the Lion and the Lizard keep the Courts, Where Jamshyd gloried and drank deep And Bahram, that great Hunter—the Wild ass Stamps over his Head and he lies fast asleep! I sometimes think that never blows so red The rose as where some buried Caesar bled!That every Hyacinth the Garden wears Drop’t in its lap from some once lovely head.

And this delightful herb; whose tender greenFledges the river’s lip on which we lean. Oh lean upon it lightly, for who knows From what once lovely lip it springs unseen?

One must be an out and out materialist to thinkthis refers to a buried corpse!

The “Lion and the Lizard,” the courageous butbeastly and the quick but lazy. The dragon and thealligator of the Chinese symbology, having fiveimprints on matter, living half on water and half onland, or half in the air’ and half on the earth, for theman with his five sense perceptions, living half inthe invisible, half in the physical world. As a life inwhich Jamshyd the sorcerer won, might well befollowed by a denser one, (the Lion and theLizard) than keep the courts where “Jamshyddrank deep”. And the wild ass would stand in thesame way for an uninitiated man as the Christ says,Give not the holy unto the swine; or saying that thebread is for the children and not for the dogs (theoutsiders), as the Mohammedans even now call thenon-Mohammedan kafirs, dogs. The failure toremember the former lives is given in the idea thatthe Sultan lies fast asleep while the wild Ass—thelater life—stamps over his head. Hunt he may, butfind, can he? The Great Hunter is therefore theseeker for truth?

Caesar, the Great Conqueror, is a good name forthe Soul that wins the strife. As Shri Krishna says,“O Great Warrior!”

Well, where he bled, there a rose blows redder;i. e., there the divine Heart-centrum is more devel-oped as a result of the experiences of the formerlife and strife, for it is true that “one sows andanother reaps.”

Further, the Hyacinth, being an early springflower and very odorous, is taken as a symbol fora precocious youthful Genius—like a Jesus, aMozart and others who have to thank the efforts offormer lives for their genius, as the outcome of for-mer efforts to be the lovely and the good.

The same metaphor is carried on in the next lineswhere the River Lip stands clearly for those liveswhere the material and the Desire World are soclosely in touch with each other that the personal-ity becomes mediumistic—therefore leaned upon

by spirits—Oh, lean lightly! The river stands as the Styx for the Desire world. He calls further:

The loveliest and the Best That time and fate of all their Vintage prest.

The “few” of which the Gospel speaks as the“Little ones”, the “neophytes of Initiation,” Thechildren of the Kingdom of Heaven, the Babes inWisdom.

But the quasi-wise are sarcastically whipped,and Omar with a grain of salt includes his formerself, saying of the materialist, the bigot, and thedogmatic:

Myself—when young—did eagerly frequent Doctor and Saint, and heard great argumentAbout it and about, but ever more Came out by the same door as in I went.

And he contrasts it with the Divine of SpiritualLight which he proclaims in:

The Grape that can with Logic absolute The two and seventy jarring sects confute; The subtle alchemist, that in a trice Life’s leaden metal into gold transmute! The mighty Mahmud, the Victorious Lord That all the misbelieving and black Horde Of Fear and Sorrows, that infest the SoulScatters and slays with his enchanted word!

Why does Omar call himself a Tentmaker? Butthe “Builder of a Hut” is a term of a status of con-sciousness which we come across in theUpanishads. It is a triangle, hence the sign of thedisciple.

Oh that our ministers might take to heart theadvice of Omar to his mother, about her kind of aprayer where he says:

Oh Thou, who burn’st in Heart, for those whoburn

In Hell, whose fires thyself shall feed in turn;How long be crying, ‘Mercy on them, God!’Why who art thou to teach and He to learn?

To save ourselves from that Hell fire, let usapply Patanjali’s advice, which is also Omar’s,also Blavatsky’s, and that of others who knew.

Patanjali says: “Yogi, the union or at-one-ment

with God, is the suppression of the modificationsof the thinking principle.” (So divorcing oldBarren Reason. )

But did Omar hold out?

Khayyam, who stitched the Tents of WisdomHas fallen in grief’s furnace and been suddenly

burned The shears of fate have cut the tent ropes of his

Life And the Broker of Hope—has sold him for noth-

ing!

For Yogi comes and goes—Yogi the Union withGod.

Well, since that, some eight centuries have gone,another life will have produced another Omar,another Caesar, another Warrior, anotherConqueror—may be. For they say that whosoeveronce has come into touch with the Divine Lightcometh ever and ever back until he is victorious.And so may Omar, and thank him for his song.

Joy as an emotion is the subject of gradations;there may be a joy that is very shallow, existingonly on the surface. The occasion of joy is somegood that has either come into one’s possession, orthat is hoped for. A surface joy is easily excited,

and as easily subsides; but is quite apparent whileit lasts. There are people whose temperament isjoyous, but as a rule they are never very deepnatures, because they easily react. A shallow joy islike the surface of the ocean—easily moved byevery wind that blows over it, causing a billowingcondition; but the billows subside as readily asthey arise, and the troughs become as deep as thecrests were high. The shallower the nature, themore easily the joy is excited, the more easily itsubsides, and the less sustaining and satisfying itis. “An empty wagon rattles the loudest.”

Then there is a joy that is very deep, excited itmay be by similar causes, but by a deeper insightinto the causes, grasping the whole import at aglance, and thus having the nature under control.Such a joy is too deep for passion, and so, forexpression; in Scripture it is referred to as a “Joythat is inexpressible and full of glory.” Its light isnot that of a flashing blaze, but of an intense glowwithin, unmanifest upon the surface. It is everenduring and sustaining. Like the great deep of theocean, it is quiet, serene, and inspiring, and is infi-nitely buoyant.

The joy of the shallow type is that of people liv-ing on the plane of generation, who waste theirsubstance by passionate gratification; the joy ofthe latter type, conserving their vital force, they arefilled with God’s fullness, and are therefore repletewith health and the rejuvenating power. This is ac-cording to the spirit of Truth, which the world can-not comprehend, which many seek, but which onlythe few find.

What is education for? This is a most disturbingquestion and to most persons a really unanswer-able riddle. The answers given will be as numerous

as the thoughts in the head of a child. Some willanswer, for Success, others for Happiness, a fewfor Beauty. One thing is certain, that any educa-tional ideal, to be generally accepted, must be as itwere the summing up of the hopes and desires ofmultitudes of people. It must be sufficiently greatso that all who are working towards it will begoing in the same direction, and it must be suffi-ciently appealing so that none will be too simple tounderstand. In the ages of faith they had such unideal—the ideal of the earth as a heavenly colonyto be captured and civilized for the great Captain—God. We must have an Ideal with some suchappeal as that. There is in it nothing intrinsicallyunacceptable to the modem mind. Indeed it wasonly when the earthly stewards of that idealbecame unfaithful to their trust, and began to wor-ship Fear instead of Love, that mankind repudiat-ed them. Let us state such a formula in termsacceptable to the modern mind, and let us thenbegin to train children through love and fearless-ness so that they can make the ideal a part of theirhearts, of their innermost being, and we will havetaken the first step towards the unifying of themind of the race.

RESOLVED

Some say they only believe what they see, andonly part of that. Oh dear, how can they be so stu-pid—why, the greatest forces are the ones we can-not see. The law of gravitation holds the universein balance. It is the hand of God. But we can’t seeit. Men and women will give their lives gladly toprotect the ones they love. Love is the greatest ofall forces. “God is Love.” Faith as a grain of mus-tard seed will move mountains. But we can’t touchit. You can’t see the wind but you can see what itdoes. It sails a ship, or turns a windmill or blows atown away. Seeing is believing, but it isn’t know-ing. They don’t accept belief on the witness stand.

The True Story of Padre Settimo’s Last Day of Life

Editor’s Note: This is a story which should beread between the words and between the lines, itembodies the principal teachings of the WesternWisdom School as taught by the Rosicrucians, andproperly assimilated, it should prove a mine ofinspiration.

Padre Settimo, parish priest of Santa MariaLucina, suddenly opened his eyes and sat up in

his pallet bed. He knew as he did so that this wasno ordinary awakening; that unlooked for, allunprepared for, the greatest thing of life had cometo him; something strange, stupendous, miracu-lous; something transcending even his heart’sdesire.

This much he knew instinctively, that out of thedreamless sleep of a night which had just begunlike every other night in his simple routine, he hadsomehow aroused to a unique and glorifying rev-elation.

What it was to be he had not the faintest idea.Back from the sleep world he came at a bound,opened his eyes and sat up, involuntarily crossinghimself as he ejaculated, “Ave Maria! Ave MariaVergine, Madre di Dio” adding in a tone of intensefervor “Madre mia.”

It was She. It was She herself, tall and veiled,who stood at his bedside carrying a lofty tinselcrown upon her head and the infant Jesus in herarms. She and no other—Maria Vergine in person,just as he had beheld her standing in her shrineever since he first came to Lucina.

Padre Settimo had numbered nigh thirty yearsas paroco at this place and never had been absentthrough sickness or any other cause; the Church’syear in its endless revolution found him invariablyat his post—conscientious, scrupulous, humble-minded, and ambitionless.

He was very insignificant in appearance; a wiry,meager type of man with small eyes, a reddishskin, and straight wisps of hair. From his convent

he had come to be the paroco and though thirtyyears had passed since then, time had hardlychanged him. His wiry form may have grownleaner, his straight wisps of hair scantier, his dullreddish skin redder; even in his youth he had beena dried up little person and at fifty odd had verymuch the same appearance. No woman had everturned her head to look admiringly after the paro-co as was the case at Primavera, the next Paese,where Dom Florio was priest.

If padre Settimo’s outward man presented acontrast to the stalwart well-featured peasants whowere his parishioners, the contrast between himand Marzaccio, the sacristan In Santa MariaLucian was still more striking.

Every man his right place, and if someone be aserpent in our path or an enemy in our household,well, we have incurred this penalty somewhereand somewhen; but it must have been a very longway back on the path that Padre Settimo had sownthat character which now embodied before him onhis daily round in the person of Marzaccio, for justas Padre Settimo showed a type of delicacy andshrinking refinement, so Marzaccio exemplifiedbrute force, with a strong emphasis on the brute.His stout shortish legs, slightly bowed, supporteda powerful, if ungraceful body, With long armsand bull neck—the whole dominated by an undu-ly big head and a face displaying an unusuallybroad surface of stubbly chin and cheek.

He had been sacristan at Santa Maria Lucinanearly as long as Padre Settimo had been paroco,but time had not endeared the two to each other;on Marzaccio’s part very far from it. Indeed, hehad from the first regarded the paroco with a dis-like which daily seemed to approach more closelyto hatred, for not a day passed that Marzaccio didnot contrast his own position with that of hisbrother who was sacristan down yonder atPrimavera, and whose lot appeared to him highlyenviable when compared to his own.

Wherein lay the difference? Up to a certainpoint their paths in life were very similar: if Beppowas sacristan to the church mirrored in the bluewaters of the lake, was not Marzaccio sacristan atSanta Maria Lucina? Their stipends and regular

emoluments were much alike; one had no morework to do than than other; the wine at the tavernwhich hung out its bush in the steep winding mainstreet of Lucina, was every whit as strong and justas cheap as that to be bought at the osteria downbelow at Primavera; the peasant women were justas pretty on the mountain side as by the lake, andLucina had the advantage of being a good sixhours walk nearer the city than Primavera. Whythen was Marzaccio so ill-content and why did hefeel that fate had dealt so unkindly with him?Why, it was just Padre Settimo that made all thedifference, for the truth is that Marzaccio hatedhim for not being a second Dom Florio.

Notwithstanding his scrupulous external deco-rum, Dom Florio was just a trifle susceptible tofeminine charm, and on one occasion at least, thisweakness caused him to overstep the limitsimposed by his sacred profession. Beppo, who hadplenty of cunning and a keen eye for his ownadvantage, had been sharp enough to discover hisparoco’s indiscretion, and having forced himselfinto his confidence, now managed to profit by it.

As years went on, Dom Florio had becomewiser and more circumspect, but he could notignore the fact that he had placed himself inBeppo’s power. The sacristan for his part knewhow to make the most of his knowledge, and forsome years past had been in a position to accumu-late soldi, for Dom Florio allowed him the han-dling of the alms box and the peddling of candlesand petty relics out of which some little profit wasto be made. Moreover, he looked forward to a stillmore profitable post whenever Dom Florio shouldobtain the comfortable preferment the Cardinalhad promised him, for Beppo knew that the priestrealized well enough that his continued silencecould only be assured by Dom Florio giving hima share in any good fortune which might befallhimself.

Discreet though Beppo was, the source of hisprosperity had been partly guessed, partly wormedout of him by Marzaccio who was the elder of thetwo. Thus, while the sacristan of Primavera wasenjoying numerous small perquisites and couldconfidently look forward to a time of considerably

fatter pickings, it was far otherwise with PadreSettimo’s satellite, who had to make his wagessufficient; for Padre Settimo’s frugal manner ofliving allowed his sacristan little opportunity forthe pocketing of illicit soldi.

The daily intercourse of two lives thrown muchtogether must do one of two things—intensify theforce of attraction or the force of repulsion. InMarzaccio’s case the latter happened, for, byincessant brooding over the superiority of hisbrother’s position, he had begun by pitying him-self and then went on to lay the entire blame ontemperance and frugality of the paroco, whoseregularity and simplicity of life he came to regardas nothing less than a gigantic wrong done to him-self. This idea absorbed his mind more and moreas the days went on until it grew into an obsession,a monomania.

Had Marzaccio bestowed a few moments ofsane reflection upon his cherished grievances , hewould have perceived at once that no matter whatthe paroco’s character might have been, his owncircumstances would not have benefited. “Wherenothing is, nothing can be got,” for while the mod-ern, gaudily painted church at Primavera was theadmiration of the country folk around, thegrandeur of the old church at Lucina repelledrather than attracted them; consequently, SantaMaria Lucina, despite its antiquarian interest andarchitectural beauties, remained neglected andthreatened to fall into dilapidation.

Santa Maria Lucina was more than a parishchurch; it was a basilica and one which had knowna very checkered history, dating as it did, in itspagan beginning at least, into ‘the dark backwardand abysm of time’ when the prosperous Etruscantown which originally occupied this rocky site haderected an altar to Juno Lucina. Under the Romaneagles the town had known a continuance of pros-perity. As Christianity displaced the Pagan gods,the temple was allowed to fall into decay, till fin-ally it was dismantled and the present basilicachurch reared on its site. So long as the townflourished, the church, dedicated to the Virgin,shared its opulence, but owing to a variety of cir-cumstances, the trade and population of Lucina

were at length diverted to a neighboring villagewhich rapidly rose into notice till, about the mid-dle of the eighteenth century, it developed into afull blown city where a modern baroque Cathedralusurped ‘the wealth and popularity formerlyenjoyed by Santa Maria of Lucina.

Few persons at this period interested themselvesin antiquities; tourists were unknown and the gen-eral indifference was shared by the ecclesiasticalauthorities who considered that a single priestwith the slenderest of stipends was all that couldbe afforded now for the service of a sanctuarywhich had once been so renowned.

It is plain then that Marzaccio’s growing aver-sion to his superior had its foundation on no rea-sonable ground, but must have been a heritagefrom some long remote, forgotten past when thesetwo egos had come into hostile relationship, forill-will once set up, acts with attractive force andbrings two beings in contact with each other alldown the ages until they include each other in love.

As for Padre Settimo, he did not cherish theleast unfriendly feeling against the sacristan, norindeed against anyone, but nonetheless, he stoodaloof from other men, living his own life, a secretand separated existence.

Since the day when the monastic patrons ofSanta Maria Lucina had installed Padre Settimothere as paroco, he had always observed the samerigid routine; devoutly attentive in the churchoffices and regular in all his parish duties. The for-mer were more to his taste, for never had he man-aged to understand his people. He was far toohumble-minded to despise anyone, but every freshevidence of their ignorance and grossness rousedin him a feeling of mild surprise, eloquent tes-timony to the gulf that existed between them.

He never got into touch with the full-bloodedbrawny contadini who came with their deep-bosomed women on Sundays and festas to hearMass at Santa Maria Lucina. His attitude of mindtowards his flock was entirely kindly but just asentirely void of understanding; they never met ashuman beings on the same ground; their thoughtsand ways, their habits and pursuits, their desiresand passions were all foreign to the little priest

dwelling solitary in the two cells leading off thecloisters, appointed for his accommodation.

What did he, what could he know of the lives ofmen whose hearts were quick with passions andtheir quiver full of children? Nothing in truth—less than nothing, for home and mother he hadnever known.

When the phlgue had desolated the neighboringcity about fifty years before, the monks from amonastery in the vicinity had found him—a weep-ing frightened baby, the sole survivor in a housewhere both parents and six elder children lay smit-ten to death.

The city was full of such forlorn orphans, butthe father and mother in this case had been devoutpeople, attentive to their religious duties, alwaysopen-handed to the Brotherhood, and of this themonks had not been unmindful. They had trans-planted the two year old boy to their convent wallsand there, among the brethren, he had grown upand assumed the tonsure.

Therefore Padre Settimo had no memory ofmother or sister, and for him the tall bedizenedimage of the Madonna, whose shrine was the chiefobject of his care, had come to stand for all that heknew of the eternal womanly. It was for her that hecultivated roses and pinks in his garden; to her thathe burned many a taper which might have cheeredhis little ‘parlor’ in the long wintry evenings whenall Lucina shut its doors to keep out the frostyblasts which swept down from the Apennines.

The brightest hour of his day was spent in con-templating her wooden meaningless features andeyes of grey glass. For him at least they were notmeaningless. It was on the Mother of God that heconcentrated all his thoughts, all his affection; notin any general or abstract sense, but as embodiedfor him in this antique puppet, once the object oflocal pilgrimages but now out of vogue andforgotten. Padre Settimo was her only worshiper.Perhaps this, more than anything else, was a barri-er to understanding his parishioners, not one ofwhom had ever shown any special devotion to theVirgin enshrined at Lucina. Men who had knownher in the earlier radiance of her installing there

THE ROSICRUCIAN PHILOSOPHY

IN A NUTSHELL

So many requests for a brief resume of theRosicrucian Teachings have come to the Head-quarters from friends who want something thatwill arouse and arrest the attention of Truthseekersand disabuse their minds of the fallacy fostered bywriters of encyclopedias that the Rosicrucians area sect devoted to alchemistry and the transmuta-tion of base metal to refined gold, pure and pre-cious,” and induce them to investigate our sublimephilosophy. Therefore we have compiled the fol-lowing from our literature.

It is true that the Rosicrucians and their pupilsare concerned in the transmutation of base metalsto gold, the preparation of “the philosopher’sstone,” and “the elixir of life,” but the metals usedare not the ordinary iron, lead, etc., and the goldproduced is something far more precious andbeautiful than the gold of commerce; it is, in fact,a purely spiritual gold which each may learn tocompound for himself if he will but follow therules laid down in the Rosicrucian Teachings.

These rules are identical with the maxims givenus by the Christ in His Teachings, and being aRosicrucian student does not necessarily separateus from our church, it but helps us more fully tounderstand the teachings of the Bible.

It should be made clear in the very beginningthat students in the Rosicrucian Fellowship do notcall themselves Rosicrucians, that title appliesalone to the Elder Brothers who are theHierophants of the Western Wisdom Teaching, andthey are as far beyond the greatest saint living inspiritual development as that saint is above thelowest fetish worshiper.

The Rosicrucian Fellowship is a movement forthe dissemination of a definite, logical and sequen-tial teaching concerning the origin, evolution andfuture development of the world and man, showingboth the spiritual and scientific aspects. This sci-entific teaching is only given in order that manmay believe in the spiritual laws and start to live

the life of true fellowship. The Philosophy is entirely Christian, striving to

make Religion a living factor in the land and to leadto Christ those who cannot find Him by faith alone.

Sooner or later there comes a time when the con-sciousness is forced to recognize the fact that life,as we see it, is but fleeting, and that amid all theuncertainties of our existence there is but one cer-tainty—Death.

When the mind has thus become aroused bythought of the leap in the dark which must sometime be taken by all, the question of questions—Whence have we come—Why are we here—Whither are we going?—must inevitably presentitself. This is a basic problem with which all mustsooner or later grapple, and it is of the greatestimportance how we solve it, for the view we takewill color our whole life.

If we come to the conclusion that death does notend our existence it is but a natural question to ask,Where are the dead? The law of conservation ofmatter and energy precludes annihilation, yet wesee that matter is constantly changing from the vis-ible to the invisible state and back again, as, forinstance, water is evaporated by the sun, partiallycondensed into a cloud, and then falls to earthagain as rain.

Consciousness may also exist without being ableto give us any sign, as in cases where people havebeen thought dead but have awakened and told allthat has been said and done in their presence.

So there must be an invisible world of force andmatter, as independent of our cognition of it aslight and color exist regardless of the fact that theyare not perceived by the blind.

In that invisible World the so-called dead arenow living in full possession of all the mental andemotional faculties. They are living a life as real asexistence here.

The invisible World is cognized by means of asixth sense, developed by some but latent in mostpeople. It may be developed in all, but differentmethods produce varying results.

When the skipper scans the sky in search of astar whereby to steer the ship safely, he finds thereis only one such, namely, the North Star. By itsguiding light, he may steer in full confidence and

will bring his ship to the haven of rest and safety.Likewise, one who is looking for a guide to whichhe may trust in the days of sorrow and troubleshould also embrace a religion founded on eternallaws and immutable principles, able to explain themystery of life in a logical manner so that his intel-lect may be satisfied while at the same time con-taining a system of devotion that may satisfy theheart, so that these twin factors in life receiveequal satisfaction. For only when a man has a clearintellectual conception of the scheme of humandevelopment is he in a position to range himself inline therewith, and when it is clear to him that thatscheme is beneficent and benevolent in the veryhighest degree, that all is truly ruled by divinelove, then that understanding will sooner or latercall out in him a true devotion and heartfelt acqui-escence which will awaken in him a desire tobecome a co-worker with God in the world’s work.

The Rosicrucian Teaching gives clear and logi-cal information concerning the world and man: itinvites questions so that the seeker after spiritualtruth may receive full satisfaction intellectually,and its explanations are strictly scientific, as theyare reverently religious. It refers us for informationregarding life’s problems to laws that are asunchangeable and immutable in their realm ofaction as the North star is in the heavens.

The law of cause and effect IS immutable. If wethrow a stone into the air, the act is not completeuntil by gravitation it is returned to earth.Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap,is the way this law is expressed in the realm ofmorals. “Though the mills of the Gods grind slow-ly, yet they grind exceeding fine,”and once an acthas been sown, the reaction will come some time,some where, as surely as the stone that has beenthrown into the air returns to the earth.

But it is manifest that all of the causes that weset going in life do not ripen in the present exis-tence, and it therefore follows that they must findtheir fruition somewhere else at some other time orthe law would be invalidated, a proposition thatwould be as impossible as that the law of gravita-tion could be suspended, for either would makechaos out of cosmos.

The Rosicrucian Teachings explain how this is

accomplished by the statement that Man is a spiritattending the School of Life for the purpose ofunfolding latent spiritual power, and that for thispurpose it lives many lives in earthly bodies ofincreasing finer texture which enable it to expressitself better and better. In the lower grades of thisschool of evolution man has few faculties. Eachlife-day he comes to school in the morning ofchildhood and is given lessons to learn, and atnight when old and gray the nursemaid of nature,“Death”, puts him to sleep, that he may rest fromhis labors until the dawn of another life-day, whenhe is given a new child-body and new lessons.Each day the teacher of the school—“Ex-perience”— helps him to learn some of the lessonsof life, and gradually he becomes more and moreproficient. Some day he will have learned thewhole curriculum of the school, which includesbuilding of bodies, as well as using them. Thus,when we see one who has few faculties, we knowthat it is a young soul who has only gone to life’sschool a few days, and when we find a beautifulcharacter, we recognize an old soul who has spentmuch time in mastering its lessons. Therefore wedo not despair of God’s love when we see theinequalities of life, for we know that in time allwill be perfect as our Father in Heaven is perfect.

The Rosicrucian Teachings also take the sting ofsorrow out of the greatest of all trials—the loss ofloved ones—even if they have been what arecalled wayward or black sheep; for we know that itis an actual fact that “in God we live and move andhave our being”; hence, if one single soul werelost, a part of God would be lost and such a propo-sition would be absolutely impossible. Under theimmutable law of cause and effect we are bound tomeet these loved ones some time in the future,under other circumstances, and there the love thatbinds us together must continue until it has foundits fullest expression. The laws of nature would beviolated if a stone thrown from the earth were toremain suspended in the atmosphere, and under thesame immutable laws those who pass into thehigher sphere at death must return. Christ said “yemust be born again,” and” If I go to my Father, Iwill return.”

Question: It seems perfectly logical tome that there must be a finer body suchas you call the vital body, but is thereany way that one may prove this to afriend who is very skeptical and

argumentative? Answer: A man convinced against his will is of

the same opinion still, says an old proverb, and itis true. So long as your friend is still in the argu-mentative stage and not inclined to examine theproofs with an open mind it is a waste of time totry to change his opinion. We would suggest thatyou stop arguing; he may then become anxious andwant to find out some more. When he does, thereare a number of ways to prove the existence andreality of the vital body. We may mention a few. Inthe first place, there is the camera. Perhaps you canfind in your town among the spiritualists one ableto take spirit photographs. Though there are tricks,well known to photographers, whereby such pic-tures may be produced, it is nevertheless a fact thatunder conditions where there was absolutely nofraud, photographs have been taken of people whohave passed into the beyond, and have been able toclothe themselves in ether, the material whereofthe vital body is constructed, and which is visibleto the eye of the lens. The writer himself was oncecaught by the camera when he traveled in his vitalbody from Los Angeles to San Pedro to see afriend off on a steamer. It so happened that hecame between this friend and the camera of anoth-er friend who was just taking a snapshot of theship, and the likeness is so good that it was recog-nized by a number of people.

Then we have the phenomenon of dogs fol-lowing certain persons by the scent obtained fromclothing they have worn. This clothing is impreg-nated by the ether from the vital body, which latterprotrudes about an inch and a half beyond theperiphery of the dense body. Hence also at every

step we take the earth is penetrated by this invisi-ble radiating fluid. But it has been found thatblood-hounds following the fleeing criminal werebaffled and lost the scent because the fugitive hadput on skates and made his way over the ice. Thisraised him above the ground so that the vital bodyprotruding below his feet did not impregnate theice and therefore there was no scent whereby theblood-hounds could trace him. Similar results havebeen obtained by a person walking on stilts fromthe place of his crime.

Then there is the case of the magnetic healerwho draws from his patient the diseased parts ofthe vital body which are then replaced by freshethers that allow the life forces to course throughthe diseased physical organ and hereby effect acure. If the magnetic healer is not careful to throwoff the black, jelly-like, miasmatic, etheric fluidwhich he has drawn into his own body, he in turnwill become ill, and if there were no such invisiblefluid as we speak of, the phenomena of thepatient’s recovery and the magnetic healer’s illnesscould not take place. Finally, we may say that ifyou can find the conditions and care to go to thetrouble, here is one way and one condition underwhich a very large number of people are able tosee the vital body for themselves. This is most eas-ily accomplished in southern countries where thedead bodies are buried very quickly after demise.Select a time as close to the full moon as possible,then watch the papers for funeral notices and go tothe cemetery in the evening following the funeralof someone who has died within twenty-fourhours, you will then probably see above the newlymade grave, flickering in the moonlight, the filmyform of the vital body which remains there anddecays synchronously with the body in the grave.This may be seen at any time by the seer, but, it isonly dense enough to be visible to ordinary peopleon the first night after the funeral. it at first, walk around the grave and look stead-fastly at it from different angles, then you willprobably get the most convincing ocular proof foryour friend.

Question: In the Apocalypse, John says “Thereshall be no more sea.” What does that mean?

Answer: It means just what it says; for the earthitself is going through a number of stages of evo-lution which furnish the conditions necessary forour development. There was the dark age duringwhich the material for our planet was gatheredtogether in a fermentative and germinative condi-tion which produced heat so that at a certain pointwhen the creative fiat, “Let there be Light,” wasuttered, this material became a luminous fire mistrevolving upon its axis and heating the surround-ing atmosphere, which was then cooled by contactwith outer space.

Thus moisture was generated and it fell upon theglowing planet with the result that a steam wentoutward, a fire fog, and for aeons of time this evap-oration and condensation went on until the earthwas encrusted and became what we know as dryland, from which a mist went outward, as also stat-ed in the Bible. This cooled and condensed, com-ing down upon the earth as a flood which finallycleared the air and gave us the atmospheric condi-tions which prevail today. In the past we had bod-ies fitting us to live in the varying environments onthe earth and today our vehicles are largely com-posed of water, as are the bodies of the animals andplants. But the Bible tells us that flesh and bloodcannot inherit the kingdom of God. We are toldthat we shall put off the physical body and that weshall be caught up in the air; also, as you mention,there shall be no sea. Thus the general conditionsare placed before us and there are quite a few signsthat though these changes are being brought aboutslowly, they are surely coming. Scientists arc nowbeginning to recognize the fact that the earth isbeing deprived of its moisture, says the LiteraryDigest:

Many authorities recognize the fact that theearth is slowly losing its moisture. How this can

occur is partially explained, we are told by C. F.von Hermann, in Science (New York), by theaction of electrical discharges in decomposingwater vapor. One of the component gases,hydrogen, is very light and rises to the upperlimits of the earth’s atmosphere, where it is ulti-mately thrown off. This loss of hydrogen meansin the long run a loss of water. The decomposi-tion of the earth’s moisture, with final loss, isalso brought about by other agencies, notablythe effect of the light-rays of the upper part ofthe spectrum. Mr. von Hermann quotes a writerin Umschu, Dr. Karl Stoeckel, as saying:

“It is believed that the ultra-violet rays ofsunlight which fall upon the water vapor sus-pended in the lower strata of the earth’s atmos-phere decompose a small part of it to producehydrogen, which rises to great heights.”

On this Mr. von Hermann comments as fol-lows:

“I do not think it has been pointed out beforethat the earth’s surface must be continuouslylosing hydrogen through the decomposition ofwater vapor by every flash of lightning.Pickering and others have recognized the hy-drogen lines in the spectrum of lightning, andthe larger works on meteorology mention thefact that lightning flashes decompose some wa-ter....The hydrogen formed by every lightningflash rises rapidly to the upper atmosphere andis lost to the earth.

“Considering the frequency of thunderstormsduring the summer season in both hemispheresand at all times in the equatorial regions, theloss of hydrogen in this way cannot be consid-ered as insignificant. As long as conditionsupon the earth remain such as to render thun-der-storms possible, the slow desiccation of theearth must continue.”

Thus the teachings of the Bible are being vindi-cated on every essential point as science advances,The facts discovered show how the past and thepresent have been described with accuracy. Thisgives us reason for our faith that the future devel-opments will also be found in line with the truthstaught in the Bible.

THE SOLAR ECLIPSE

June 8th

Since our last issue, the July number,went to press in the beginning of June,an eclipse of the Sun occurred, andthough we have been too busy studyingAstrology as pertaining to human

beings to pay attention to “Mundane Astrology”,the branch of the science pertaining to the destinyof nations, we feel that it may interest our readersto hear what others have to say on the subject. Atotal eclipse of the sun is one of the most im-pressive and wonderful of natural phenomena.Fortunately this year this remarkable event hap-pened at such a time as to be visible to a great partof the American population. The solar eclipse wascaused by the moon coming between the earth andthe sun to such an extent as to conceal the latterentirely from the view of persons living within aspecific area.

The moon’s shadow fell across the UnitedStates, first touching the Pacific coast at the mouthof the Columbia river in Washington state at 3 :55p.m., Pacific time (under hours set by daylight-saving time). Thence it traveled south-eastwardpassing through Boise, Idaho; Denver, Colo.; HotSprings, Ark.; Jackson, Miss.; Tallahassee, Fla.;and Orlando, Fla. The eclipse passed theMississippi River at 6 :37 p.m., Central time, andleft the Florida coast at 7 :42 p. m., Eastern time.

Astronomers estimated that the moon’s shadowrushed across the United States at the rate of 1,000miles an hour. Thus It required about three hours

for it to pass from the Oregon to the Florida coast.

Size of the Sun and Moon When a total solar eclipse happens, the reason

the moon can entirely obscure the sun, though it is400 times smaller in diameter than the latter, isbecause it is 400 times nearer the earth. The dis-tance of the moon from the earth, however, variesfrom 217,650 miles to 249,000; astronomersexplain that is the reason why in some eclipses itscone-shaped shadow is “too short to reach theearth. This results in what is called an “annular,” orring-shaped eclipse, during which only the outerrim of the sun can be seen.

The total eclipse June 8th last occurred inGemini, the ruling sign of the United States. OnAugust 21, 1914, just as the war was beginning, atotal eclipse of the sun fell in the third decanate ofLeo, the sign of royalty. That eclipse was visibleall over Europe and cast its shadow upon the west-ern-most parts of Russia, and sections of Rumania,Austria-Hungary and Germany.

Here are some of the statements made by mun-dane astrologers, and our readers may take themfor what they are worth. We do not know who isthe writer.

attained its culmination, the exact degree at whichthe 1914 eclipse appeared was culminating: Whenthe war began the same degree was setting in theprogressed horoscope of the German Kaiser.

In September, 1846, Galle, a German as-tronomer at Berlin observatory, turned his tel-escope to the spot at which Leverrier, a Frenchastronomer, had calculated that an unknown plan-et ought to be found. Similar calculations had beenmade and recorded at the Greenwich observatoryby Adams, an English astronomer. In conformityto these astute calculations of a French and anEnglish astronomer, the German astronomer dis-covered Neptune.

When this discovery was made Neptune was inclose conjunction with Saturn and in exact opposi-tion to the same degree of Leo, which has alwaysbeen a fatally sensitive zodiacal point in the histo-ry of the Prussian dynasty and other royal andautocratic powers. And on June 1 of this year therevolutionary and iconoclastic Uranus reached andbecame stationary at the exact opposition to thesame spot. Thus it is indicated that the stars fore-tell the doom of autocracy.

Presaged Russia’s DefeatIt was Saturn’s continuance at the same place in

1905 that presaged Russia’s defeat in her war withJapan. And next December the coldly grim andchronically contracting Saturn will become sta-tionary at the exact opposition to this same fatefulspot.

When it is understood that the researches ofmodern astrologers have demonstrated thatNeptune generates and radiates those astral vibra-tions that make for altruism, fraternity and democ-racy, or other distinctly humanitarian projects, itwill be seen that the certain doom of autocraticgovernments was most clearly written upon thescroll of the heavens from time eternal.

An exhaustive definition of the stupendouslyimportant astrological significations of the eclipsemay be stated briefly as follows:

America in AscendencyThe United States becomes, more than ever

before, a major factor in world politics. This nationwill also be the storm center of many of the most

fiercely contested reforms and innovations of allhistory. Vicious, vehement and even violentattacks will be hurled at the national and otherexecutives and their chosen co-workers. The stran-gling of Prussianism in Europe will result in a scat-tering over the world of many of its most astuteemissaries and will also infuriate and make des-perate the crafty parasites who tremble at the ter-rific portents of the rising tide of an awakened andinvigorated democracy, and they will leave nostone unturned to turn back and check the ad-vancing hosts of progressive forces.

Gemini is one or the airy signs and belongs tothe distinctively humane and intellectual group.Cosmically we are just entering the portals ofAquarius, another of the airy signs, ushering in anew era which will last about 2,600 years. Alreadysince we have begun to respond to these newvibrations marvels have been wrought by, with, inand through the air and its stupendous potentiali-ties. But we have as yet scarcely scratched theouter surface of that which is destined to be thedominant element in human achievements in thenew age. And there will also be some terrificallydestructive manifestations of the powers of the allas a direct result of the etheric vibrations generat-ed by this eclipse. In this country in particular weanticipate unusually severe and wildly erratic windstorms in the very near future. And portions at leastof the coming summer season will fall underunusually low temperatures over the eastern halfof this country. Early June especially.

Signs of EducationGemini is distinctively the sign of education.

This eclipse prefigures the most radical kind ofdepartures in all matters of education, literature,etc. It is ruled by Mercury, the “Messenger” and“Interpreter, and exerts dominion over all forms ofexpression, definition, translation, transmission,conveyance and delivery of messages, thoughts,ideas, information, people, merchandise, etc.Hence, schools, colleges, publishing houses, news-papers, writers and publicists, roads, highwaysand, express companies, telegraphs and telephonesand aerial enterprises will enter upon an epoch ofastounding readjustments, extensions, remodelings

and reforms The most ominous kind of menacingaspects afflict all the significators of religion, sci-ence and philosophy, indicating bitter and wildlyexcitable conflicts, contests and disputations andchanges among the leaders and champions of var-ious creeds, codes, systems and aims. Likewise thefactors related to shipping and foreign trade are soextremely complex and contrary as to predicateembarrassing situations.

Mars, the “God of War,” in elevation above allthe other planets, shows that even without the warin Europe martial matters will largely occupy thespotlight in this country for some time to come.This applies both north and south of the equator.Extreme heat, violent electric storms, tidal waves,eruptions or explosions are the possibilities of thisinfluence, and if the war continues, the indicatedregion will undoubtedly be the scene of destructivenaval encounters.

God of Mammon Saturn, the God of Mammon and worldly

dominion, is second in elevation to Mars, butreceiving an acutely afflicting aspect from the lastnamed planet, showing that the national and stateadministrations will direct their forces and ener-gies against the entrenched beneficiaries of privi-lege. And as Saturn is proceeding to the oppositionof the revolutionary Uranus—who occupies aposition of stupendous potency in his best sign andin the home, signifying the masses—we findample warrant for confidently predicting that inthe next five years there will be greater advancesmade in the way of establishing equality of oppor-tunity and social justice than at any time in our his-tory, not even excepting the revolutionary period.

THE CHILDREN OF LEO 1918

Born July 24 to August 23 inclusive

In the Pictorial Zodiac Leo is represented as aLion, which is the king of beasts. In ancient Israelwhere each tribe carried a flag bearing the sign ofthe Zodiac to which they belonged Leo was theemblem of the House of Judah whence sprangSolomon, the most renowned of all the kings of

antiquity. He was later reborn as Jesus, the Lion ofthe tribe of Judah, whose body became the taber-nacle of the great Sun Spirit, Christ. Therefore theSun sign Leo is called the Royal Sign and thereforeit confers upon its children qualities, characteris-tics and instincts of a particularly noble nature—ifthe horoscope is not otherwise too severely afflict-ed. In that case, it makes them just as thoroughlybad; there are no half way measures, for they arestrong, powerful characters resembling also in thatrespect the Sun whose rays are most powerfulwhen he goes through Leo in the latter third of July

These characteristics make it extremely impor-tant that parents give these children the right train-ing from the earliest years, for though they are notvery plastic at any time, from birth to seven yearsof age they are at least more impressionable than atany later time and parents should particularly notethat to obtain results, the children of Leo must beled; if an attempt is made to drive them they willrebel and then future efforts will be futile. Theyrespond most readily to love and are very amplydemonstrative of affection, so parents will berewarded for whatever love they bestow on thesechildren. It may also be said that they crave lovemore than the children of the other signs, and ifthey do not get it at home they starve and are apt toseek it elsewhere, to their sorrow and perhaps tothe sorrow of those who ought to have given it.

The children of Leo are physically of an opti-mistic, cheerful and sunny disposition, inclined tolook at the bright side of life, with an unswervingfaith in others which persists, in spite even ofrepeated victimization. They are noble, coura-geous, ambitious, and persevering in their pursuitsand aims, hence generally successful in life. Theyaspire to lead rather than follow, especially ifMars, the planet of dynamic energy, be strong inthe horoscope. This also gives them a very decid-ed and determined manner which brooks no inter-ference. Ordinarily they are extremely kind andconsiderate, but if the turbulent Mars afflicts theSun they have very quick tempers; they are notmalicious however or spiteful unless Saturnafflicts the Sun; that brings out the cruel side of theleonine nature, and then at times they show avicious side, which is entirely out of keeping withtheir usual behavior. They may then be as strong intheir hate as they are in their love. This will applyto the 1918 crop of Leo children, for Saturn, theplanet of sorrow, is now casting his gloomy shad-ow upon Leo and marking these children with thesign of suffering; but this is also the opportunity ofthe parents to shield them by added love andinstruct them how to quench the spirit of spite andcultivate the spirit of forgiveness. And they willhave added strength to bear their burdens, forMars, the planet of dynamic energy, is in mundanesextile to the Sun and Saturn, giving them much

perseverance, constructive and executive ability,which will probably help to bring them safelythrough the crises of their life.

Mercury, the planet of mind, is powerful in hisexaltation sign Virgo, in mundane sextile to Venus,the planet of love, and to Jupiter, the planet of opu-lence and benevolence,which are placed in thehome-sign Cancer. This will give them a superiormentality, keen domestic instinct, so that they willbe lovers at home and good providers, hospitableand philanthropic.

With respect to health, we find that Jupiter theplanet of the bon vivant, and the convivial Venusare both in Cancer, the sign ruling the stomach,mundanely squared by the inflammatory Mars inLibra, the sign which governs the kidneys. Theseconfigurations show hat the 1918 children of Leowill be too fond of feasting for their own good, andare liable to suffer from digestive troubles for theirgourmandizing in later years. Parents of these chil-dren should therefore be particularly careful toteach them, both by precept and example, to livethe simple life so that the habits formed in child-hood may perhaps persist through life, in a mea-sure at least, and save them some suffering. Wealso find Saturn, the planet of obstruction, in Leothe sign which rules the heart; he is in mundaneopposition to the spasmodic Uranus, so we mayjudge that the heart of these children will be organ-ically weak, therefore they should be taught fromchildhood years to avoid too strenuous exerciseand too much excitement.

TELLING TIME WITH A COMPASS

It is commonly known that points of the com-pass can be determined by the use of a watch. Bypointing the hour hand toward the sun, and bearinghalf way between the hour and and 12 o‘clock onthe watch is true south. It is not generally knownthat the time can be told by the compass with equalfacility. Take the true azimuth or bearing of the sunand subtract from it 180 degrees: multiply theremainder by the fraction 1/15, and the result willbe the hours before or after 12 o’clock noon.

awaken the sixth sense, which will put her intotouch with the invisible world. Whether she doesthis or not will of course depend upon herself andupon circumstances under which she lives. Butthere can be no doubt that she will be stronglydrawn to occultism in one form or another and asalready said, she has a great deal of enthusiasmand is a born leader; therefore it is not likely thatshe will remain on the outskirts and content herselfwith a smattering of the sacred science.

There is only one drawback to all this, and thathinges upon the question of health. We find thatSaturn, the planet of obstruction, is in Gemini thesign which rules the lungs, and square to the life-giving Sun in the twelfth house sign Pisces, whichrules hospitals and similar institutions of confine-ment. But this is dan-gerous in a sense, because the configuration occursin the generative sign Scorpio and if it works itselfout legitimately, it will bring a large family; but ifpassion is not kept in bonds it may result in clan-destine relationships which will then bring sorrowand trouble. Therefore he should be very carefullyinstructed at the earliest possible moment in life inthe sacredness of the fount of life, the sanctity ofmarriage, and a clean, upright behavior.

method has a weak configuration with the life-giv-ing Sun and Neptune which may help him slightly,and the two last named planets are also configurat-ed by trines from the psychic signs Cancer andScorpio. This indicates that the sixth sense, whichall humanity is gradually and slowly evolving, hasbeen brought to a point of perfection in John,where it is nearly ready for active manifestationand may be cultivated so as to open up the spiritu-al worlds for him in this life. But this, of course, isa two-edged sword, and it should be handled verycarefully. Be sure that he is guided into the rightchannels in this respect.

But everything is not good in John’s horoscopeany more than in other figures. Where there is astrong light there is also a deep shadow and herewe find that the life-giving Sun is square to the tur-bulent Mars and the bombastic Jupiter. This will attimes bring out his evil nature and make himquick-tempered, irritable, arrogant, egotistical andsuspicious. Under these configurations he maylose in a moment the respect and confidence ofpeople which it has taken years to cultivate. He isalso apt to rush into things and matters rashly andfoolhardily. It willgive an inventive turn to the mind amountingalmost to genius. But the Moon is a psychic plan-et, so are Uranus and Neptune; the Moon is in anoccult house, (the 12th), Neptune is in a psychicsign, (Cancer), and Uranus is in a mental house,(the 9th). All these testimonies show a strong spir-itual strain in Ernest and it seems as if his effortsand research work will be most successful alongoccult lines, if so be that he feels an inclinationtowards this kind of work.

Having studied his good points and pointed outthe lines of success, let us now take a look also atthe dark side of Ernest’s horoscope, so that we mayknow what to help him overcome and avoid. The Visible And Invisible Worlds

What is the student’s first step inoccultism? The study of the invisible worlds. Why do we call them invisible worlds? Because they are invisible to the majorityof people, on account of the dormancy ofthe finer and higher senses whereby theymay be perceived the same as the physicalworld about us. Can you give an illustration of this condi-tion? To the man who is born blind, most thingsthat we see in the physical world are non-existent, because he lacks the sense ofsight. For instance, light and color arebeyond his ken. So it is with the greaterpart of humanity; they feel and hear mat-ters pertaining to the physical world, butconditions in the invisible worlds are asforeign to them as light and color are to theblind man. Because the blind man cannot see light andcolor or the deaf man hear sounds, does itconstitute a valid argument that they donot exist? It does not. Then, is it a logical argument to say thatbecause most people cannot see the super- physical worlds, they do not exist, and if

not, why?It is not, because if the blind man obtainshis sight he will see light and color. In likemanner, if the higher senses of the super-physical blind are awakened, they also willbe able to behold the things that are nowhidden from them. When one has developed the sense of clair-voyance and is able to “see” in the super-physical realms, is it reasonable to assertthat he “knows all about” these highestworlds? It is not, because such a condition is im-possible in every day life. The blind manhaving had his sight restored would not atonce “know all about” the physical world,and in all probability never would. What is the Hermetic aphorism?“As above, so below.”

Are the facilities for acquiring knowledgein the super-physical worlds greater or lessthan in the physical world? They are much greater. But much more careis needed there than here, as has beenobserved by those qualified to know. Why are the observations of trained clair-voyants of mor.e value than the untrained ~ Because they realize how little the singleinvestigator can grasp of the multitudinousdetails, and are, therefore, more modest intelling about them, and are ever ready todefer to the versions of others.

What general argument do superficial peo-ple use against the existence of higherworlds? They contend that if these worlds exist, in-vestigators must necessarily bring backidentical descriptions. What illustration from everyday lifeproves the fallacy of this contention? Suppose a newspaper should send outtwenty trained reporters and observers toreport on a certain city, rebuilt after a fire;it is quite certain that, out of the twentyreporters, no two would be exactly alike.They might treat the leading features withsome similarity, but there would be a widedifference at to detail, quantity, and qual-ity of the matter submitted. Would you consider it an argument againstthe existence of the city that the reportsdiffered in various essentials? No. Because each saw the city from hisown particular point of view, and a perusalof all reports would give a fuller and bet-ter understanding of the city. Each reportwould round out and complete the others,and the same is true regarding accountsmade by investigators of the higherworlds. Why investigate these super-physicalworlds? The Bible says “sufficient untothe day is the evil thereof;” then whyshould we go beyond, this world? The time comes to everyone, sooner or lat-er, when he or she must leave this worldand be placed in new and strange condi-tions beyond, and would it not be to ouradvantage to know something about thesenew conditions and environments just thesame as if we were planning a journey tosome foreign country? Such knowledgewould have a very satisfying and compos-ing effect, for we would know what to ex-pect. At what time would such knowledge like-ly be of the most benefit? At the time of death, when we are about topass into the beyond and new conditions. What other name is sometimes given to

the super-physical world? The world of causes. And what name is sometimes given to thephysical world? The world of effects. Is it necessary to understand the cause be-fore we can comprehend the effect? It is. And it is also necessary to understandthe super-physical world before we canthoroughly know the physical world. Can you give an illustration of this law ofcause and effect? We see street cars in motion and· hear tel-egraph instruments clicking. These areeffects, but the mysterious force whichcauses the phenomena remains invisible tous. To thoroughly understand the effects, itis necessary to know something about thecauses. What can you say as to the reality of thehigher worlds as compared to the physicalworld? Strange as it may seem, the higher worldsare much more real and indestructible thanthe objects in the physical world. Can you give an illustration of this condi-tion? An architect “thinks the house out” beforeprocuring the material and starting to build.It first takes form in his mind. Is the thought-form of the house visible toanyone but the architect? Not until he makes it objective on paper. Then the workmen may construct the houseto correspond to the thought-form. Which then is the more substantial and last-ing, the house or the image in the architect’smind, and why? The image. Because it will exist as long asthe architect lives, but the house may bedestroyed in many ways, by fire, hurricaneor decay. But supposing the architect is destroyed ordies, will this not also destroy the thought-form, the image in the architect’s mind? Not even the architect or anything that mayhappen to him can destroy it, because it canbe recovered by those who are able to read

the memory of nature. This will be dealtwith later on.

In how many worlds is the universe divid-ed in the Rosicrucian Teachings, and whatare they? Into seven worlds. The World of God, theWorld of Virgin Spirits, the World of Di-vine Spirit, the World of Life Spirit, theWorld of Thought, the Desire World andthe Physical World. Why is this division necessary? Because the substance of each of theseworlds is amenable to laws which are prac-tically inoperative in others. Can you give an explanation of this condi-tion? In the physical world matter is subject togravity, contraction and expansion, while inthe desire world there is neither heat norcold and forms levitate as easily as theygravitate. What do we learn about distance and timein these worlds? In the physical world distance and time aregoverning factors of existence, but in thedesire world they are almost non-existent. What is said about the density of theseworlds?They vary in density, the physical worldbeing the densest of the seven. How is each of these worlds subdivided? Into seven regions or subdivisions of mat-ter. What are the subdivisions.of the physicalworld? Solids, liquids and gases form the threedenser subdivisions, the remaining fourbeing ethers of varying densities. By what general term are the three densesubdivisions of the physical world known?The chemical region, composed of solids,liquids and gases. What name is given to the four upper and

finer regions of the physical world? The etheric region, comprising the chemic-al ether, life ether and reflecting ether. Into how many classes does the materialistdivide matter and what are they? Into three classes, solids, liquids and gases. Why does the occultist class solids, liquids,and gases as chemical matter? Because they are derived from the chemic-al constituents of the earth. What has been built from this chemicalmatter? All the forms of mineral, plant, animal andman, the mountain or the cloud, the juice ofthe plant or the blood of the animal, the airwe breathe or the water we drink—all arecomposed of the same chemical substance. What is it that moulds this basic substanceinto the multiplex forms we see about us? The One Universal Spirit expressing itselfin the visible world as four great streams oflife—the four kingdoms—mineral, plant,animal and man. What happens to a form when it has servedits purpose for the three higher streams oflife—plant, animal and man? The chemical forces disintegrate that formso that the matter may be returned to its pri-mordial state and made available for thebuilding of new forms. What is the relation between the spirit andthe form it occupies? The spirit which moulds the form into anexpression of itself is as extraneous to thematter it uses as a carpenter is apart andpersonally independent of the house hebuilds for his own occupancy. As all the forms of mineral, plant, animaland man are chemical, is it a logical de-duction to assert that they are as dead anddevoid of feeling as chemical matter in itsprimitive state? A. Yes, and it is so held by theRosicrucians.

WHITE FLOUR AND MALNUTRITION

According to the latest advices from Europe, thecover on the bread-basket is being clamped closerand closer down. Those who used to insist uponthe very best brand of butter on their bread are nowloyally content to use drippings or oleomargarineand “be satisfied with what you can get” is the slo-gan of all who have heretofore been in the habit offavoring their appetite. The menu of the family isnot now made up at home and the articles where-with to supply it then bought at the various stores,but the housewife starts out on her shopping tourwithout any preconceived ideas in her mind as towhat she wants to get. There is no ready-madeschedule for the day’s meals, she composes themenus in the store according to the food she hap-pens to find available on that particular day. Theseare difficult times, not only for the gourmet and theman of peculiar or exotic tastes but even for thehygienist who likes to observe the due balancebetween the various elements in a proper diet. Theman I mean who is careful to keep his protein, car-bohydrates and so on, in the proportion dictated bythe common scientific usage. And among the goodthings which they are learning over there is thehitherto undreamed-of value of whole wheat flour.In an article recently read it was stated that thetroops in Gallipoli, where the ration consistedlargely of white bread and canned meat, soondeveloped a number of cases of beri-beri. It wastherefore recommended that the bread served outto the forces in Mesopotamia contain a consider-able percentage of bran and germ, but this reformdid not come in time to benefit the forces engagedin the advance. to Kut and afterwards besieged inthat city. Being fed mainly on white bread andcanned meat many of these men also sickened

with a general malaise which in several instancesdeveloped into an acute form of beriberi.

Meanwhile there was no beri-beri among theIndian soldiers who took part in the same expedi-tion, but their ration was a totally different one; itstwo principal items were what was called “Atta”and “Dhal.” Atta is a very coarsely ground wheatflour and Dhal is composed of peas and lentilswhich of course are not subjected to any destruc-tive processes of milling. Further, during the siegeof Kut the supply of white flour ran out and theEnglish soldiers had then to be served with Attaand this promptly removed the beri-beri fromamong them.

The question of an adequate supply of the vita-mins that protect from scurvy, that is to say theantiscorbutic vitamins, as they are now technicallycalled, is no less important. The fresh citrus fruitssuch as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, et cetera,which we for years have recommended as thegreatest antiseptics known, are essentially rich inthis element, and should be used by everyone whoaims to keep in perfect health. If this were onlyproperly appreciated by the authorities as well asby the large majority of our people, the generalstate of health of soldiers and civilians would begreatly improved.

There are some people who have tried to spreadthe idea that the coarse war bread used by the dif-ferent nations of Europe and now being introducedhere is in itself a cause of scurvy and diseases dueto malnutrition, while the very opposite is the fact.All fresh vegetables and fruit contain anti-scorbu-tic vitamins, though none of them, not even thepotato, can compare with the citrus fruits. It hasbeen said that the introduction of the potato intoEurope put an end to epidemics of scurvy, which

was previously a grievous scourge among the poorpopulation at the end of winter. This tallies withthe recent wartime experience of England. Therewere a number of cases of scurvy in some of thenorthern towns, especially among the inmates ofpoorhouses and other public institutions. Theseoutbreaks, as pointed out by dieticians, wereundoubtedly due to the great scarcity and the highprice of potatoes during the early months of theyear, and the trouble laid at the door of the warbread should really have been laid down to thescarcity of potatoes, or other fresh vegetables. Solong as we have whole wheat flour, fruit and veg-etables, there will be no trouble, but health cannotbe maintained on white flour and meat, as has beenamply proven where that has been tried as a dietfor soldiers. Even experiments with pigeons haveproved that a diet of white bread or polished ricesoon results in beri-beri while whole wheat kernelsand unpolished rice restore health to the underfed birds.

People who fed on the snow white flour of pre-war days used to pity the poor peasants of Europewho, they read, lived on “black bread.” The pityshould have come from the other side, for thecoarse rye or barley bread in use among the nationsof Europe is really a “staff of life” compared to thepoor product of the mills in this country where thegrain given by the good God was despoiled of thevital parts which were fed to the cattle while we atethe refuse under the illusion that we were gettingthe “cream”. It is one of the blessings of the warthat we are being brought face to face with realitiesand learning to know good food when eat it. Maythe day of white flour soon end altogether.

number of them, who look upon food as somethingthat is eaten with a fork or spoon. They honestlybelieve that, because watermelon is solid and milkliquid, it gives them the right to class watermelona food and milk a drink excellent in its way, butstill a mere beverage. You might just as well saythat rock salt is a better food than cream cheesebecause it is more solid. Whether any substance is

a food depends not upon whether it is solid or liq-uid, hard or soft, but upon its food value; that is,upon its ability to build the body and furnish ener-gy to it. Capability to do those two things is whatdetermines whether any particular substance is afood and how valuable a food.

The value of foods depends upon their power toaccomplish three things: (1) The satisfying of theappetite; (2) the maintenance of the bodily healthand; (3) the creation of energy which works outinto action.

Moreover, it has been proved that the value ofany food depends, for a final estimate, upon theway that food is combined with other foods. Infact, the most healthful and satisfactory dietdepends upon a wise and complete combination offoods. A carpenter, in his work, at one time , needsa hammer; at another a chisel; but the well-equipped carpenter’s shop must have both. In sim-ilar fashion, the human body needs the special ser-vices of proteins, of fats, of carbohydrates, miner-al salts, and vitamins. But the well-equipped bodymust have all. That is what necessitates a well-bal-anced diet.

THE PROPERLY BALANCED FOOD—Now, tofollow out the comparison with the carpenter,many inventive minds have tried to simplify thecarpenter’s kit by making one tool which mayserve for several uses. Thus different bits fit intoone brace. The hammer and hatchet are frequentlycombined in one tool. But no one has ever invent-ed a single contrivance which will include all thespecial properties of different groups of tools.Nature, however, has done somewhat better in thecase of food. For there is one kind of food whichincludes in itself a valuable amount from each ofthose groups of food materials: proteins, fats, car-bohydrates, mineral salts, and vitamins. Notbecause of any wave of popular taste, nor owing toany theorizing by scientists, but out of sheer, hon-est excellence it has won for itself the right to beranked as the most nearly perfect single food. Thatfood is milk.

This does not mean that any sane person shouldoverlook or neglect the appetizing qualities anduseful functions of other foods. No adult, otherthan an invalid under doctor’s orders, should try to

live entirely on milk. No adult, in fact, should failto recognize the advantages of a mixed diet. Butthe food which is closest to being in itself a mixeddiet is milk. It comes nearest to doing the work ofall other foods combined.

This, of course, means whole milk, milkunskimmed and unchanged. And it means fluid milk.

WHAT MILK CONTAINS—First of all milk fur-nishes an extensive supply of the most valuableproteins. Protein, you will recall, is the body build-ing material, indispensable also for body-repair-ing. It may be called structural. And that very factindicates its importance to children. Nor is thereany other food as good as milk for supplying pro-tein to children. In spite of the fact that it is aboutseven-eighths water, a quart of milk contains anounce of balanced protein; that is, an amount equalto what is found either in four eggs, from six toeight ounces of medium fat meat, four ounces ofwhole-milk cheese, six ounces of dried navybeans, or a twelve-ounce loaf of white or whole-wheat bread.

Along with protein, milk also gives the bodyenergy or fuel to burn. In addition to the plentifulsupply of fat in its cream, milk contains carbohy-drates in the form of sugar. Thus, whole milk ismade up about as follows:

Water ................87 per cent Protein .................3.3 ” Fat ......................4 ” Sugar ..................5 ”

This analysis varies somewhat with the breed ofcows.

The remaining fraction of 1 per cent of the milkcontains mineral salts, which are of great impor-tance for the structure of the bones and for regulat-ing bodily processes. Milk contains little iron, butwith that one exception it furnishes in the mostperfect form all the salts, such as lime, which thebody must have,

And, finally, milk provides those all-valuablesubstances termed vitamins, so necessary to pro-mote growth and sustain life.

The completeness of milk, the many-sidednessof its nutritious qualities, makes it an admirablesubstitute for other kinds of food.

THE IDEAL FOOD FOR CHILDRENFrom such close examination of the materials

which go to make up milk, it is easy to see why itis so valuable a food for growing children, in fact,the most valuable. It is not merely because of itsstructural proteins and mineral salts, its fuel fat andsugar, and its stimulating vitamins, but because ofthe balanced relations between these, and becauseof its easy digestibility, that milk is so essential tohealth and growth in childhood and youth.

That is why every household in which there arechildren should be a household in which there ismilk in abundance.

THE MATTER OF COST—To be sure, milk atpresent price-levels is a less cheap food than itwas. But one should remember that the moneyspent for a quart of milk purchases a food-value—a variety and degree of value—which could not begained from other foods, except by a far largerexpenditure.

Milk—in a manner which no other food canexactly duplicate—preserves the health of thegrowing generation. And for that reason it is afood conducive to the nation’s future welfare andpresent stability—a stability never more necessarythan in war-time.

When anyone is constantly in our thoughts, itoccasions us no surprise if suddenly he appearsbefore us in propria persona, even though webelieved or ‘knew’ him to be thousands of milesaway. This is why Padre Settimo felt no astonish-ment when, on this chill December night, he wokeand recognized his Blessed Lady standing besidehim. She did not speak or even make a gesture; shesimply turned and went slowly out. But the littlepriest understood her meaning as plainly as if shehad said:

“Follow me, Settimo, I have somewhat for theeto do.”

ONE OF THE BLESSINGS OF WAR War is making converts to vegetarianism. In this

country we have not yet felt the full Mars effect. Mr.Hoover throws the refrigerator door open, and, undercover of the diversion so created, padlocks the grainelevator. Later on he will return and slam the doors ofthe refrigerator shut, as well. Science tells us, as theysay in grammar-school textbooks, that man receivesmore nourishment from crops converted directly intofood than from the same crops arriving on his table inthe shape of meat. One of the first things the GermanGovernment did when it became apparent in 1914that the war would be a long-drawn-out affair, was toinstitute a slaughter of the porcine innocents through-out the Empire. In the whole of Europe, with a fewrule-proving exceptions, Spencer’s theory that vigordoes not spring from a vegetable diet has been disre-garded. And the potato, Buckle’s comfortable expla-nation of Ireland’s sad estate, now testifies to the sadestate of the whole world.

The fact is, very strange things are happening tomankind’s bill of fare, things hitherto undreamt of inBrillat-Savarin’s philosophy. In the first place, peopleare getting acquainted, especially in this country andin England, with foods quite unknown before. Allthose mysterious portions of cattle—the heart, thelungs, the brains, the tail, the spleen—these were for-merly considered fit only for consumption by frogand snail-swallowing foreigners. Now the conde-scending Anglo-Saxon is glad of the chance to havethem prepared for his own table. The roast-beef of oldEngland has deteriorated into a tripe stew. Animalsformerly spurned, shark, porgies, devil-fish, squid,and mussels, have pushed their way onto our tables.Vegetable foods, total strangers in certain parts of theworld, also received a tremendous boost. Englandand France are learning to eat corn, Indian corn, asthey call it. Asia is converting us to the soy bean. AChinese cook can make a good imitation of practical-ly any food out of soy bean paste. Peanut substitutesfor olive oil. Oats, barley, and rye are earning a placebeside wheat, in the American cookbook. Dairy prod-ucts find the direct way to our dining rooms. Skimmilk now masquerades as cottage cheese instead ofpork, with the result that the public gets a greater per-centage of protein than before. Powdered milk andeggs and desiccated potatoes are used to save wasteand freight space.

As yet no great complaints have been heard from

the countries most severely affected by the newregime. England shows a particularly sporting spiritin her new adoption of the war diet. Food with anEnglishman was always a much more important itemof life than with us. And he had a very peculiar diet,perhaps more peculiar than our own in its verydownrightness. He liked his food straight; his roastbeef, simple and unadorned, had almost become apart of his national character. He liked his disheswithout complication, bare of sauces. So that the newculinary regime must have hit him almost harder thanwould a suspension of Magna Charta. And all thepetty restrictions as to purchase and quantity, nodoubt, went against the deepest grain in him. TheFrench, on the other hand, although their versatility incookery should have made them more willing to bowto necessity, proved slower in introduction of the realwar diet. A Frenchman suffers from his incorrigiblelove of improvisation. His unwillingness to facescarcity, and therefore cut out beautiful crisp loaves,and curtail table d‘hotes, made the final reform moresudden and disagreeable. It seemed hard to keepwomen who were earning ample wages in munitionfactories out of the pastry-shops. But it was done.

How will the world’s diet be affected after the warby what has been forced upon it during the war?People of fatalistic turn of mind, who refer everyhuman development to the influence of environment,will maintain that a slump back into ante-bellum con-ditions of provincialism must he inevitable. Otherpersons, the perfectibilians, contend that now the wayhas been pointed out to a really scientific diet, basedupon a sound chemical formula—so many units offats, so many of starch, so many of proteids. The mostextreme joyously foresee tablets containing requisitenourishment absent-mindedly swallowed at set inter-vals during the day: thus doing away entirely with thenecessity of sitting down to table. The moderateshope for a genial culinary eclecticism, a sort ofkitchen internationalism, which will help in promot-ing understanding through man’s easiest road ofapproach, his stomach. The man who eats pie andcold baked beans for breakfast will no longer sneer athim who eats goat’s meat. Our food resources willhave been enriched. We shall know we may eat athousand and one things which we were afraid ofbefore. And it is highly probable, despite the poets,that we shall be more vegetarian than ever before.

Browned Rice Brown one cup of clean rice in the oven until a

golden color. Place in double boiler with three andone-half cups of hot water, adding one teaspoon ofsalt, boil until soft. Serve while hot with cream.The above will also make a good pudding whensweetened, adding one half cup’ of seeded raisins.

Escalloped Carrots Wash, scrape, and cut into small cubes six car-

rots, boil in salted water, adding one onion and tea-spoon of sugar. Drain, and put in alternate layers inoiled baking dish, with bread crumbs that havebeen browned in oil. Cover with milk and bake-until browned.

Cottage Cheese Allow skimmed milk to stand until it clabbers,

or becomes thick enough to lift with a spoon. Placethis in a porcelain or enamel dish on the back ofthe stove or in a dish of hot water, allowing it tostand until the whey rises to the top. Pour in acheesecloth bag and allow to hang over night in acool place to drip. This cheese will keep for sever-al days and can be used in soups and seasoning forvegetables. For sandwiches and salads, work intothe cheese a little grated onion, garlic, and a smallpiece of canned pimento, season with salt. Parsleyand chives are often used as a finish.

Tomato and Potato Salad Wash and boil six potatoes in jackets, allow to

cool, peel and slice, adding one onion, and threesprigs of parsley chopped fine, mix well with may-onnaise dressing. Serve on garnished plate withfinely sliced tomatoes and olives.

String Bean Soup Use beans that have been left over or become too

dry or old to cook in the ordinary way. Boil themwith a small clove of garlic and one onion, whensoft press through colander, adding enough hotwater for a soup. Take two tablespoons of cottagecheese and rub into enough flour to crumb, brownthis in a pan, with a tablespoon of butter and oil,add this slowly to the bean soup and season withsalt and paprika.

Apricot Cake To one and one half cups flour add one and one

half teaspoon baking powder, and one of salt, workin until dry one tablespoon of butter, add enoughmilk to make a soft dough, spread thinly in oiledbaking pan. Press lightly on top a layer of apricotsthat have been pitted and halved. Bake for twentyminutes. Just before removing from oven sprinklelightly with sugar.

THROAT TROUBLE Removal of the tonsils is a subject on which our

opinion is frequently asked, and we have alwaysdiscouraged the removal of these necessary organswhich guard the entrance to the throat, for it hasbeen found that serious throat and lung disease areoften experienced in later life as a consequence ofremoving the tonsils, and an increasing number ofphysicians today denounce this operation as whol-ly unnecessary.

As a matter of fact, enlarged tonsils are due toconditions connected with the arrival at pubertyand adolescence, perhaps accentuated by a wrongdiet, and this is a factor in most of the other throatdiseases, for the larynx is the opposite of the gen-erative organs, as proved by the fact that the voicechanges at the time of puberty, and in many otherways. When the period of adolescence is past itwill be found that these organs will return to theirnormal condition and give no further trouble. Inacute conditions we have always recommendedthe citrus fruits as the finest antiseptic known. Thisapplies also and particularly to pineapple.Lemonade made of lemons and honey will befound to give great relief in this condition.Oranges, grapefruit, and pineapple should also beused freely when the child complains of throattrouble. A cold compress on the throat at nightwhen the child goes to bed, supplemented by mas-sage of the throat, will he found an effective treat-ment in all throat troubles. It goes without saying,as a matter of course, that the bowels should bekept open and clear. By the use of these simpletreatments the trouble will probably be over in afew days, perhaps even without the necessity ofputting the child to bed. Do not be afraid if whitematter is expectorated during the process of thistreatment; that is just what the child needs to getrid of in order to be well.

SUBSCRIPTION RATE REDUCED to $1.50 inthe United States and Canada, 6 shillings 3 pencein England.

It is well known to publishers that a magazinewhich does not carry advertising cannot pay foritself and the Rays From the Rose-Cross is theexception to the rule, especially under present con-ditions when all material and labor has increasedenormously, so that paper which we bought for thismagazine before the war at $120.00 per ton is nowover $300.00 a ton, and we are fortunately buyingit under contract at $250.00. Therefore when theradical changes in the post office regulations call-ing for an increase on magazines amounting insome cases to 400 per cent seemed to have beenvoted into law by Congress over night about a yearago, we in a panic raised our subscription rate from$1.00 to $2.00 and though afterwards pressurebrought to bear by the large publishers of the coun-try prevented the law from going into effect atonce, the day has now come on July 1st when thenew rates are effective.

But while the rates on the magazines whichcarry a large amount of advertising have been soraised that many fear it will put these publicationsout of business, the new law has dealt very gentlywith publications that carry no advertising and aremaintained in the interest of religious, scientificand educational institutions, thus our beloved Rayswill only have to pay a very slight increase and weare therefore pleased to announce a reduction inthe price of the magazine.

We only wish that we could go all the way downto $1.00 per annum, but we feel sure that all oursubscribers will realize that on account of theincreased cost of labor and material this is anabsolute impossibility, especially in view of thefact that the magazine has not paid for itself evenat the $2.00 rate. We feel however, that as theincreased postage threatened by the law was thereason for the raise in part, this reduction must be

made in order to keep faith with our subscribers,regardless of the loss in revenue it entails to our-selves. We also feel that those who have alreadypaid their $2.00 for the year’s subscription shouldbe reimbursed to that extent, and in order to ac-complish this with the least possible work onaccount of the shortage of labor, we have decidedupon the following method:

When you send in your next yearly subscription,$1.50 in the United States and Canada, or 6shillings and 3 pence in England, if you have paid$2.00 for the past year, please mention that factand ask for the rebate; we will then send you areceipt for one year and three months subscription.This will straighten the matter out and save us thelabor of giving you credit for an extra three monthson our subscription lists which would mean a lot ofextra work for us.

If you paid for only one half year’s subscriptionthe last time, and mention this at the time ofrenewal, we will credit you with one extra month,as it is impossible to split the difference in anyother reasonable way.

Having thus shown our good faith, we want toask you to help us recover the revenue we shall belosing by this reduction. This is your work just asmuch as it is ours, and what is a loss to The Workis a loss to us all personally. Therefore, if you caninterest others and obtain subscriptions, you arehelping our common cause to that extent, bringingus the finances wherewith to do this work andbringing to the one who receives the magazine alight and a knowledge that is priceless. Here atHeadquarters we have not been pushing the maga-zine and other publications as strenuously as weought to during the last eight or nine monthsbecause the gigantic task of publishing theEphemerides has sapped all our energy, but thattask has have been accomplished by the time youreceive this. and zeal so that we may increase the circulation ofthe magazine and spread our books, particularlythe COSMO, in all directions, that the gloriouslight which we have received may be spread in anever increasing circle to the spiritual upliftment ofour fellowmen.

In conclusion, let us reiterate that new subscrip-tions from now on are $1.50 per annum, and thatwhen subscribers send in renewals, not before, theclaim must be made for the additional threemonths or one month, as the case may be, due tothose who have paid $2.00 for the present year.This puts the responsibility of remembering uponyou and should you forget to make this claim itwill be your loss, this would not be right from apurely business point of view, but then you knowthat this work is not carried on on business princi-ples and if you had no interest in it you would notbe taking the Rays at all.

Mandelberg is an ultra-enthusiast in this direction, and while his methodmay not be suitable to everyone, we can perhapsnevertheless learn something from him that willhelp us to do our part.

Firmly believing in the truthfulness and feelingthe uplifting power of the Rosicrucian teachings,and knowing how much we, the members of theRosicrucian Fellowship, have been individuallybenefitted by these Western Wisdom Teachings, itis but natural that the unselfishness and brotherlylove in us should reach out to let others also knowand possess the good things. we are enjoying. Theoutside world knows almost nothing about thesewonderful truthful teachings as presented by theElder Brothers through Mr. Heindel and the Rosi-

crucian Fellowship. By putting the Rosicrucian lit-erature in libraries, book stores, news stands, etcetera, success will come in time, but the majorityof members will agree that the introduction to thepublic by means of the above named method aloneis nevertheless too slow; the libraries reach com-paratively few and not many are yet buying fromthe Newsstands or at the Bookstores because igno-rant as to what our books contain; prejudice andreligious intolerance have of course their share inretarding our work. Therefore something more ef-fective is needed and that is what the writer will tryto present.

Good and truthful, ennobling and helpful teach-ings like those of the Rosicrucian Elder Brotherscan be introduced to a larger circle of people whoare anxious for just such knowledge, if each mem-ber of the Fellowship and others interested in thework will do their individual part, wherever theymay happen to be.

For each believer in the teachings, individualeffort—at home, in business, neighborhood, oncars, et cetera—will surely bring the quickest andmost far-reaching result.

The writer has already put these methods intopractice and they seem to work. He has introduceda considerable quantity of the Rosicrucian litera-ture by a hand to hand method without ever askinganyone to join our society or giving any informa-tion about the Fellowship, except when asked to doso. To work for membership simply of theRosicrucian Fellowship is proselyting, to thewriter, but to disseminate the Rosicrucian teach-ings or any other of the good God’s gifts he maypossess, is his delight. If the teachings are right,the membership will take care of itself by way ofnatural growth caused by the free-will desire toenter into the Fellowship after the peopleapproached first have become acquainted with theteachings. Such men and women are then God-sent, the real members of the Fellowship. Theyhave not been forced into it by undue personal per-suasion.

The writer has as a rule followed this methodin his individual work along the lines indicatedbelow.

and Newsstands in that city or town where he isresiding have both the Cosmo-Conception, theRays From the Rose-Cross, and if possible alsoother books.

2. To send literature by mail to a list prepared forthat purpose to Lodges, Masonic, Fraternal andother benevolent bodies, to the secretaries of vari-ous Labor Unions, to individuals of personalacquaintance, and others met by personal contactand by correspondence. No one is safe from thewriter who happens to fall into the “good luck” ofsitting at his side in the street car, or those whomhe happens to work for or work with during thebusiness hours, or who happen to share his dinnertable at the restaurant. All are offered something ofreal worth, not forgetting even the waiters. Thisstatement should not, however, be construed tomean that the writer does not discriminate; on thecontrary, he is very careful to whom he offers thisliterature, not to “cast pearls before swine”, but togive it only to those who he is intuitively certainwill take it at least with respect. Often a businesstransaction is also honored by the introduction ofthe Rosicrucian literature, or when paying bills, etcetera. Frequently the literature is sent to thePastors of Churches which the writer attends, or tomen and women from the ranks of the social orchurch workers whose names happen to comebefore his eyes, or proffered to them personally ifsuch an opportunity should present itself, after thechurch service, all with due tact and loving kind-ness which the introducer can use according to theoccasion.

There is an unlimited field open for the intro-duction of the Rosicrucian teachings by such per-sonal work, which the writer considers as one ofthe best ways of serving. Such work is a necessitybecause a majority of the people are as yet in sor-rowful darkness and unhappiness and they have aGod-given right to that knowledge of light, purityand joy which we have the grace to possess.

As an indication in respect to the subjects thatcould be used, the writer would suggest articlesfrom the Rays and the Students Monthly lessonswhich he continually orders from Headquarters inlots of several hundred copies. For instance,“Philosopher’s Stone”, “The Scientific Method of

Spiritual Unfoldment”, “Prayer, a MagicInvocation”, etc. From the Rays could be reprinted“The Law of Consequence and Rebirth”, “ TheElder Brothers, and the Invisible Helpers”, “Howwe Heal”, or how the teachings are based upon thetranslations of true facts as found in the Memoryof Nature.

This last item is the most important of all, foronly by such an explanation as to “how we get it”can others be quickly convinced that theRosicrucian Teachings are not someone’s fancydreams, but have a substantial foundation in therealms of Truth.

Let us endeavor to make such an impression onothers that they will feel that it has “meant some-thing” to come in contact with a truthful, loving,and pure Rosicrucian Aspirant.

It is very hard for me to concentrate here, andfeel I am making very little if any progress in thatline, although in the service part and charactertraining think this trip will be very beneficial.Would never have been satisfied if I had not come,and will be able to do better work at home for hav-ing been over.

I saw a village which had 12,000 population;every house had been hit, nearly every housedestroyed; utter ruin and desolation; the churchesspecially seem to suffer, for no military value, justdepravity. The houses not hit in the bombardmentwere burned or blown up by the enemy.

When one views scenes like these, thinks of theblood of men, tears and suffering of women andchildren, is it possible not to feel very strongly onthe subject?

“OVER THE TOP” Our friend, James Casey, who has written so

many helpful articles for the Rays went “over thetop” last month at La Mesa, a little town hidden inthe hills of our sunny Southern California. For sev-eral years he had been suffering from tuberculosiscontracted in Denver, Colorado, the famous meccaof those who suffer from that dread disease. Hadhe not neglected, it there is no doubt he could havethrown it off, but as it was he came to California todie, he had given up hope and then nothing can bedone.

A few months ago he asked Mr. Heindel to offi-ciate at his funeral, and as he was determined todie, nothing remained but to grant his request, andso a party from headquarters motored the 55 milesto La Mesa for that purpose, when notice came ofhis transition.

And as usual, we found the real Mr. Casey pre-sent and very much interested in the proceedings;the last we saw of him he was on the driver’s seatin the hearse evidently intending to follow thebody to the cemetery 12 miles away. Undertakersare undoubtedly calloused with respect to the dead,that is to say, the bodies, but the thought struck us:“wonder if the driver of the hearse would feelcreepy if he knew that a real live ghost was ridingwith him?”
