TIDBITS SAYS
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
November
BABIES by Kathy Wolfe
Tidbits has done a little research this week on a few famous folks, both past and present, who claim November as their birth month. Read on as we share a few of the interesting facts we found. • Probably best known for her role as Dr. Izzie
Stevens on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” actress Katherine Heigl got her start as a child model posing for the Sears catalog. She moved on from this $75-per-hour job to her first commercial, a TV spot for Cheerios. Although she has recently starred in several movie blockbusters, she also has the honor of having starred in the lowest-earning movie in the recorded history of film making, 2006’s “Zyzzyx Road,” which grossed a total of $30 at the box office.
• The parents of Condoleezza Rice took her name from an Italian music-related term con dolcezza, which translates “with sweetness.” The life of this 66th U.S. Secretary of State was filled with music from the age of three, when she began music, figure skating, French and ballet lessons. At 15, it was her goal to become a concert pianist. Switching her college major to political science set the stage for many of her achievements. However, she has never abandoned her music, still practicing every day, and she even accompanied the celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma at a National Medal of Arts Awards recital at Constitution Hall.

Fighting back against cancer is a challenging battle in itself, but managing to prevail over its repeated onslaughts is nothing short of a miracle. Read on to learn how this young man’s determination and inredible resilency kept him from accepting defeat, and instead allowed him both to survive and to triumph over seemingly hopless circumstances. • When entering his senior year of college in
2002, Matthew D. Jones was on the homestretch of completing a degree in communications. A short time into the semester, he just couldn’t seem to shake the cold, flu and achiness that had bothered him for weeks. His worsening lack of energy made it difficult to even climb a flight of stairs, and before long he was sleeping 16 hours a day. Since his symptoms were consistent with those of mononucleosis, he went to see his doctor for tests and treatment.
• The test results for mono came back negative, but the doctor had the more serious news that his white blood count was more than five times the normal range. He immediately ordered a bone marrow biopsy. When the results came back the 23-year-old was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a deadly serious condition that is fatal in just weeks to a few months if left untreated.
• Jones underwent five intensive chemotherapy treatments over a three month period. At its completion, he was declared in remission, and given an 80-percent chance that the cancer would not return.
• Yet it was not to be. Just seven months later Jones’ leukemia had returned. After another round of chemo, it became clear that a bone marrow transplant would be necessary to save his life. It was his last semester of college and, determined to graduate on time, Jones spent most of the final weeks in the hospital while completing his studies.
• After wrapping up both his college degree and his chemo treatments he was once again in remission, but continued to wait for a bone marrow donor for his transplant. When he began experiencing extreme migraines, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to his cerebral spinal fluid, changing the odds to only
a 10 percent chance of survival. • A special chemo device placed in Matt’s head
to treat the cancer became infected, one of his kidneys began to fail, and his temperature shot up above 104 degrees. This lethal combination caused him to slip into a coma, and it appeared that he was at the end of his journey. At 2:00 a.m. one morning doctors contacted his family advising them that Matt would likely not make it through the night.
• But even in his unconscious state, Matt’s apparent determination to survive pulled him through. He recovered and went into remission for a third time. But upon his recovery, doctors found him disorientated and experiencing memory loss and slurred speech. He couldn’t remember how to take a step or tie his shoes, and he now faced the challenge of having to RITA DEAM / DARRYLL- MASSAGE THERAPY

• Most folks have heard of the Hubble Space Telescope, an instrument carried into orbit by a 1990 space shuttle mission. But most don’t know that it was named for the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, the first to confirm the existence of galaxies other than our own Milky Way, a discovery made in 1923. A Rhodes Scholar, he studied law and set up a legal practice before realizing that his real passion was astronomy.
• Bo Jackson achieved fame as the first athlete to be named an All-Star in two major sports, baseball and football. His birth name was Vincent Edward Jackson, after his mother’s favorite television star, Vince Edwards of “Ben Casey” fame. Jackson achieved his nickname when his family described him as a “wild boar hog” constantly getting into trouble. He signed with baseball’s Kansas City Royals as a left fielder in 1986 and started playing for football’s Los Angeles Raiders as a running back the following year.
• Goldie Hawn has a distinguished ancestor, Edward Rutledge, who was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. This famous blonde actress is also an accomplished ballet dancer, having begun lessons at age three. At 11, she debuted in “The Nutcracker,” earning a total of $1.50 for her performance.
• As the only child of famous automaker Henry Ford, Edsel Ford was born in November 1893. He grew up to marry into the Hudson’s department store family and founded the Ford Motor Company’s Mercury division. He also brought us the Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln Continental. Fourteen years after Edsel’s early death from stomach cancer at age 49, the Ford Motor Company in 1958 introduced its new Edsel brand of cars named after him. Unfortunately, the Edsel was considered a major marketing failure and was discontinued after the 1960 models came off the line.
• If you’ve seen any James Bond movies, you’ve heard the musical work of composer John Barry, who wrote the soundtracks for 11 of the films. The winner of five Academy Awards and four Grammys, he also composed the music for “Out of Africa” and “Dances with Wolves.”
• That bump on November baby Owen Wilson’s nose is the result of having his nose broken twice, once in a high school fracas, the other in a friendly football game. Wilson is no stranger to mischief, having been expelled from high school as a sophomore for cheating on his geometry test. He spent his junior and senior years in military school.
• Back in 1930, 18-year-old Leonard Slye packed up his belongings and moved to California, hoping to make it big as a singer. He played in several groups over the next few years — The Hollywood Hillbillies, Rocky Mountaineers, Texas Outlaws —before forming Sons of the Pioneers in 1934. The following year, he appeared in the first of his 100 movies. Along the way came a name change to Roy Rogers. He acquired his golden palomino Trigger in 1938 and was seen astride that horse in every single movie and television episode thereafter. (Trigger died at the ripe old age of 33 in 1965.) At the height of his career, Roy Rogers received more than 75,000 fan letters a month.
• In 1968, clothing designer Calvin Klein, armed with $10,000 of venture capital, started out with just a small coat shop in the York Hotel in New York City. Gradually expanding over the next several years, he added the original designer jeans in 1974, using Brooke Shields as a model. He sold $200,000 worth during the first week after their introduction.
• Baby boomers will recall the daily farewell message, “And that’s the way it is,” given by CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he wrapped up the television evening news. He started his broadcasting career on radio in 1937 and brought bulletins on World War II bombings and the Nuremberg trials. During his 19 years on the evening news, Cronkite reported the momentous events of Americans’ lives, including the death of Martin Luther King Jr., the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, the Iran hostage crisis and most notably, his emotional and tearful delivery of the news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He was the source for the news of the U.S. space program. Opinion polls named him “the most trusted man in America.”
• It should come as no surprise that movie hunk Matthew McConaughey was listed in his Longview, Texas, yearbook as “most handsome.” But did you know he spent one year of high school as an exchange student in New South Wales, Australia?
• The world’s first set of septuplets to survive infancy, Iowa’s McCaughey children, turn 14 this month. Born nine weeks early, the three girls and four boys consumed 42 bottles and
November baby Roy Rogers was born and raised in a tenement building in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 2nd Street. In 1970, Riverfront Stadi-um was built on that site, with his apartment located on what is now the ballpark’s infield. After this, the cowboy singer often claimed his birthplace was at “second base.”

● It was 18th-century German scientist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg who made the following sage observation: “Everyone is a genius at least once a year. The real geniuses simply have their bright ideas closer together.”
● “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” (popularly known by a line from the chorus, “Glory, glory hallelujah” was written by Julia Ward Howe in November of 1861 after the author made a trip to Washington, D.C., and reviewed Union troops near the city. The song was published the following Feb-ruary in The Atlantic Monthly magazine, earning Howe a grand total of $4 for what was destined to become one of the most popular songs of the Civil War and a peren-nial American classic.
● When cartoon icon Bugs Bunny first appeared, in 1935, he was called “Happy Rabbit.”
● If you’re a cat owner, it probably will come as no surprise that cats spend ap-proximately 80 percent of their time sleep-ing.
● Becoming a sports star is the dream of many young people, so you might think that someone who is signed to a profes-sional baseball contract has it made. You’d be wrong, though; only one out of every 10 athletes who sign such a contract ever be-comes a major-league ballplayer.
● You’ve certainly heard the old adage “lightning never strikes twice” but, strictly speaking, it’s not true. Technically, light-ning always strikes twice. Each lightning bolt is made up of multiple bolts that travel the same path and strike the same spot in swift succession. *** Thought for the Day: “I’ve noticed that men generally leave married women alone and treat them with respect. It’s too bad for married women. Men are always ready to respect someone who bores them. And if most married women, even the pretty ones, look so dull, it’s because they’re get-ting too much respect.”

While video games continue to gain popularity and their sales stay on the rise, there’s still nothing that really compares to a good old wholesome board game! Let’s look at the origins of some of these longtime favorites. • If you’re familiar with the names of Mrs.
Peacock, Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard, you’ve played Clue. This murder mystery game was invented in 1944 England during World War II by a solicitor’s clerk who thought it would be a good diversion for passing the time while gathered in underground bunkers during air raid drills. It was originally called “Murder!” The players move throughout nine rooms of a mansion seeking clues as to which character committed the crime and which weapon — rope, revolver, wrench, candlestick, knife or lead pipe — was used to commit the dastardly deed.
• Two Canadian journalists conceived the idea of the popular game Trivial Pursuit, commercially released in 1981. An 18-year-old artist created the final artwork for the game. In 1984 alone, more than 20 million games were sold.
• It’s not surprising that the best-selling board game in the world is the game of Monopoly, with more than 200 million games sold. It’s estimated that 500 million people have played the game since its release during the Great Depression. Monopoly is sold in 103 countries and in 37 languages. In the English version, the highest rent property is “Boardwalk,” but if you live in Spain, it’s Paseo del Pradeo named after
a Barcelona street, and in France, it’s Rue de la Paix. During the game’s history, it’s been more than just a source of entertainment. During World War II, Monopoly games containing escape maps, compasses and small files were smuggled to prisoners in German POW camps. Real money was even concealed inside packs of the play money to aid in prisoners’ escapes once they reached the outside.
• A serious illness was the catalyst for the creation of one of the most popular children’s games, Candy Land. Eleanor Abbott was recovering from polio in 1945 and wanted to create something to entertain children afflicted with the disease. She devised a race to find the lost King of Candy Land covering 134 winding colored squares, so that no reading skills were required. Characters encountered along the route included Queen Frostine, Gramma Nutt and Lord Licorice, as players made their way through the Candy Cane Forest and Gum Drop Mountain. The first games sold for a dollar. There have been more than 40 million Candy Land games sold since.
• Chutes & Ladders was created to teach children good morals — Good deeds are rewarded with a trip up the ladder, while bad conduct results in a slide down. Originally called Snakes & Ladders, its origins are in India, with menacing, slithering serpents as the consequences of bad choices. Milton Bradley brought it to America in 1943 and modified the name.
• The earliest variation of today’s Sorry! can be traced back to 1929 England, when William Henry Storey of Southend-on-Sea filed for a patent on the game. The name Sorry! was subsequently trademarked in the UK to Waddingtons, the British games manufacturer. They began selling it with that name in 1934. Today, the lively game ranks among the top board game sellers.
• In 1964, to coincide with the Beatles’ arrival in
America, Milton Bradley released its “Beatles’ Flip Your Wig” game, with a price tag of $2.98. There were four playing pieces, one of each Beatle, and players had to move around the board collecting four cards for their band member — a picture card, a signature card, an instrument card and a hit record card. Today, if you happen to have a mint condition copy of the game, it’s worth upwards of $300.
• Chinese checkers actually have nothing to do with China. The game was invented in Germany in 1892. The hexagram-shaped game came to the United States in 1928 marketed under the name of Hop Ching Checkers.
• If you’re looking for a simple holiday gift that will bring family and friends together for some good old-fashioned fun at the kitchen table, consider a board game. It’s a great way to spend an enjoyable time of wholesome fun and fellowship -- no batteries required! ■

The Savage Truth on Money
by Terry Savage
VA Loans a Great Deal for Veterans We recently celebrated Veterans Day -- and if this story seems familiar, it’s because I have writ-ten several times about the great deal that the Veter-ans Administration mortgage loan program offers to those who have served our country: 3.875 percent, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages. So instead of starting this week’s column with the traditional question, let me start with some answers. Here are two true stories about people who read my column and contacted VA mortgage expert Daniel Chookaszian about buying or refinancing us-ing the VA loan program. A VA loan not only gives you lower rates and no PMI (private mortgage insur-ance) payment, but it lets you borrow 100 percent of the value of your home and may allow you to with-draw cash, as well. California residents Paul and Jennifer were deep in debt and struggling to pay their traditional 6 percent mortgage. A VA refinance allowed them to take out cash to pay off their credit cards, and it reduced their mortgage payment by $400. Diana, a 35-year-old disabled veteran of the Iraq War, receives monthly VA disability income as well as Social Security Disability for life. She has just closed on her first home using her VA eligibility with no money down and a 15-year fixed-rate at 3.75 percent. Her disability income was used to qualify Diana for the loan. If you or your spouse is a veteran, the VA
loan program may be the answer to your questions about finding an affordable loan. So here are the qualifications you must have to secure a VA loan: You must have been honorably dis-charged from the U.S. military. You must have a Certificate of Eligibility (available from the VA Eligibility Center. Call them at (888) 244-6711). Your credit score must be above 640. You must be able to demonstrate steady income, or a two-year history of self-employment, or a stream of retirement benefits. Spousal income can help you qualify. Your total debt payments cannot be more than 41 percent of your total income. You cannot have any unpaid liens or judg-ments. You must wait until two years after a bankruptcy to apply and cannot have any subse-quent late payments. You can qualify for VA home loan benefits no matter how long ago you were honorably dis-charged. And even if you took out a VA loan many years ago, you remain eligible for another VA loan if the first loan was paid off. The maximum amount of the full VA no-down payment mortgage loan is $417,000. However, if you purchase a more expensive home and need to bor-row money above that amount, you must put down 25 percent of the amount above the $417,000 limit, and pay a slightly higher rate to get the larger mort-gage. The VA loan program is not intended for speculators or investors. The property must be own-er-occupied, although the loan can be used for sin-gle-family homes, condos or one- to four-unit proper-ties. And a VA loan can also cover a jumbo mortgage, making it an attractive alternative for higher-priced homes. There is no age restriction on qualifying for a VA mortgage loan, and you can get a new loan
even if you had one many years ago. The surviving spouses of veterans with benefits also qualify if they have not remarried. To learn more about VA loans, contact Daniel Chookaszian at (312) 376-2215. He is a volunteer chaplain for disabled vets. Or, you can contact the VA Regional Loan Center in St. Paul, Minn., at (800) 827-0611 to speak with a VA loan specialist. The VA loan is not a solution for those who have bad credit or who owe much more than the home is worth. But for those who have served our country and are now looking to buy a home or refi-nance an existing loan, this is one small reward for their service. And that’s The Savage Truth. Terry Savage is a registered investment ad-viser and is on the board of the Chicago Mercantile Ex-change. She appears weekly on WMAQ-Channel 5’s 4:30 p.m . newscast, and can be reached at www.ter-rysavage.com. Q: I am loving the second season of my favorite show, “The Walking Dead,” on AMC. I know this might be a little early, but will it return for another season? -- Chad G., via e-mail
A: Normally, this would be a bit early for renewal news, but since the show’s return at the end of October, its ratings have been through the roof. Season two ratings have eclipsed the stellar ratings (especially by cable standards) of the first season, so AMC has already renewed it for a third season. “The Walking Dead” depicts the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse following a group of survivors outside Atlanta, starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies. ***
Q: I was sad to read in your col-umn that “Spartacus” star Andy Whitfield had passed away. Will the production of the show continue after his death? -- Hallie E., Akron, Ohio
A: In March 2010, Andy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Production on season two was delayed so he could be treated. Unfortu-nately, his cancer returned, and he dropped out of the series and was replaced by Liam McIntyre. Andy passed away at age 39 this past September. Season two, with Liam as Spartacus, will return to Starz on Jan. 27, with the network already giving the green
light for a third season to begin production in early 2012. ***
Q: I have noticed the actress who plays Kensi on “NCIS: Los Angeles” appears to have two different colored eyes. Does she, or am I just seeing things? I think she plays a good strong female part and would like to see her in more shows or movies. -- Mary B., Virginia Beach, Va.
A: Daniela Ruah, who has played Kensi Blye since the show’s premiere in 2009, has a birthmark in her right eye, mak-ing it appear almost completely black, with her left eye being ha-zel. You’ll get to see more of Daniela soon, as she co-stars in the feature film “Red Tails” with Terrence Howard, Cuba Good-ing Jr. and Bryan Cranston. She also is rumored to be starring in the upcoming “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” with Bruce Campbell. *** UPDATE: Hot on the heels of the news that Lifetime picked up “America’s Most Wanted” after it was canceled by Fox comes the news of its premiere date. The 20-episode 25th season of the crime-fighting reality show will premiere on Dec. 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The show’s passionate host, John Walsh, said of the return: “I am excited to be back in the saddle and working with Lifetime. We are the court of last resort, and with the show getting back to our weekly airing, we’ll have the capability of get-ting more fugitives off the streets and behind bars where they belong. We hope our observant fans con-tinue the mission with us, on our new night -- Friday
-- and keep our capture number climbing while help-ing those crime victims who need us.”

The Case of theRetirement-Fund-Eating Mold Dear Mary: We had water damage that affected our kitchen, bathroom and floor-boards. We also have mold. Our homeowners insurance won’t pay for anything, but they are requiring we get everything fixed in the next three months by a licensed plumber, or they will no longer cover us. We will have to use funds from our retirement account, which al-lows us $8,000 without penalty. The remainder (up to $20,000) will be charged a 6 percent pen-alty. This is about half of our retirement! Should we go ahead and get this necessary work done and use our retirement money to pay for it? -- Marlene, via email
Dear Marlene: I wish I had more informa-tion, such as your age, how many bids you’ve received, and whether you’ve considered doing the abatement work yourselves and then having it inspected by a licensed professional approved by your insurance company. It’s not child’s play, and you want to make sure you know exactly the precautions to take to protect yourself, your family and your home. I assume that since you are looking to your retirement account as your only resource, you have no savings for emergencies. Given what I don’t know, and what I have to assume, I do not recommend that you raid your fledgling retirement account until you have exhausted all other possi-bilities. If it comes down to your retirement account truly being your only option, that will be a shame. In that case, I hope that you have the time it will take to restore those funds and get back on track. * * * Dear Mary: What are good ways to save money on dental care? What do you think about going abroad for medical or dental care? -- Ellyn, Florida
Dear Ellyn: My dentist assures me that dental and periodontal disease is preventable with daily brushing (I use Oral-B Power Toothbrush, which is very effective), flossing and regular visits with a dental hygienist. Those three activities will save you a ton of money over the years. As for restorative work abroad, I have no experience at all with that. That’s not to say I would advise against it, only that I lack good, reliable information. It seems to me that the expense of traveling there and back, plus meals and lodging, would cost more than simply having the work done at home. However, I have a feeling that readers will be anxious to weigh in with their experiences, good or bad to, plus recommenda-tions and referrals. When they email me at [email protected], I’ll report back. * * * Dear Mary: We enjoy the pleasant fra-grance that the Glade plug-in fresheners give to our home, but the refills are so expensive I am reluctant to buy them any more. Do you happen to know of a way to save on the re-fills? -- Sharon, via email
Dear Sharon: I have actually done this, and it worked quite well. The trick is finding fragrance oil that is cheaper than a plug-in refill. Check your local dollar stores, or online with a search for “fragrance oil.” I’ve found these oils to be highly concentrated, so mixing them with mineral oil helps stretch the product to make it last
longer. You’ll need to pry the plastic top from the empty plug-in, using a knife or other object (be careful!). Then slowly and carefully pour the oil into the container, replacing the top. Good luck!

For the Love of Dog, Be the Pig The best places to shop are those with the most lenient return policies. Nothing sets the alarm bells off like an “all sales are final” sign. “Store credit or exchange only” isn’t much better. But full permis-sion to return a lamp that deeply offends my wife’s sensibilities means full discretion for me to take it home and give it a whirl. A dog is another story. A dog is not a lamp. If you’re going to get a dog, it should be for keeps. There’s a saying that the difference between involved and committed is like a ham and eggs breakfast: The chicken was involved; the pig was committed. If you’re going to get a dog, be the pig. Recently, a man called me for advice about a problem that’s not uncommon. The dog is causing a rift in my marriage, he said. He and his wife can’t have kids. She wanted a dog to fill that void. He went down to the local shelter and brought home a dog that looked a lot like their last dog. It didn’t take long for the couple to realize the similarities did not extend beyond the looks de-partment. The dog is phobic, unruly, unsocialized, fearful and completely void of training. The husband now contends that they bit off more than they can chew with this beast. The wife’s response? You don’t understand the power of love. Neither is quite right. Love is powerful, but it’s not an education. Its warm rays won’t radiate the ABC’s into your child’s brain. Nor will they weave a heart-shaped glossary of human terms like “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” “down” and “come” into your dog’s limited vocabulary. But how do you know that you’ve taken on more than you can handle if you haven’t made even the most basic attempt at gaining control of a situa-tion? Yes, this tale got off on the wrong foot. There is no logic to bringing an unknown dog into your home to stay just because he looks like your former dog’s doppelganger. It makes as much sense as buy-ing a used car over the phone. If they had it to do over, I’d advise them to

Unhappiness Is a Disease That Often Shortens Life How many of us are pessimistic about op-portunities, the future of our nation or the chance that we will live out our lives with sufficient resourc-es to meet our needs? Pessimism is rampant, and this is associated with poor health and a shorter life expectancy. By contrast, the happier you are, the healthier and the longer you are likely to live. A study just published in the highly pres-tigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that adults who described them-selves as happy had a 35 percent lower risk of dying than those who felt they were unhappy. In this report, the happiness levels of 3,583 people from age 52 to 69 were assessed and fol-lowed for five years. Many had a chronic disease, such as diabetes or high blood pressure and poor health habits such as excessive alcohol use and cigarette smoking. Despite these illnesses, being happier was associated with a longer life expec-tancy. This study is one of many linking happiness to health. A study followed 5,000 university students for more than 40 years and found that pessimism was associated with a higher death rate, and an important study of nuns showed that those with a positive outlook on life -- and who were happy and content -- lived longer. Happy individuals are less likely to be stressed, enjoy their work more, are of-ten at their ideal body weight, tend to exercise and eat right, and have high self-esteem. All of these traits are predictors of longevity. Without happiness, no one can tackle his or her job with passion. To quote Donald Trump, “with-out passion there is no energy and without energy there is no success.” Happy people are more likely to be loved, less likely to be lonely, more likely to have faith in themselves and in a higher power, and much more likely to seek medical advice, to pre-vent and treat disease. And with happiness comes smiles and laughter -- two powerful tonics that not only im-prove health in an individual, but also infectiously promote the health of those around him or her. A good belly laugh is associated with better metabo-lism, lowering of blood pressure, reduction in stress and improved relationships. Research studies have shown that laugh-ter causes the release of endorphins that elevate mood, creating a natural high that relieves tension and relaxes muscles. Laughter boosts the immune system, so that those who smile and laugh are far less likely to develop minor infections and, over the
years, have a lower risk of arthritis and cancer. So what should we do with this information? Understand that if you are pessimistic, sad and lonely, it is time to seek help. Being pessimistic is almost like a disease, drawing similar people to you who only make things worse. Pessimism and loneli-ness impair the ability to make friends or develop constructive relationships. Sometimes counseling is the best approach to dealing with pessimistic ap-proaches to life. Consider counseling if you ask any of these questions: Why do I have no friends? Why do I find it so difficult to go on a date? Why does no one seem to like me? In addition to the Inter-net, bookstores abound with self-help information that can help promote a positive attitude to life and make you happier. For those of you who do not feel particu-larly happy, content or fulfilled, here is some sage advice: Learn to smile more and don’t be so shy. See the bright rather than the dark side of things. Be drawn to laughter and participate. Spend time with playful and fun people and bring humor into conversations. My mother is a good example of how hap-piness has blessed her with a great life. She is always at the center of conversation; she is funny and has numerous friends. And whenever she became a widow, suitors rapidly surrounded her. Her infectious personality helped, but most of all, my mother is a flirt and knows how to appropriately interact with the opposite sex. There is truly hope for everyone. Learn to be happier and, if necessary, seek help. The hap-pier your life, the better your health and the brighter your days. Life is too short not to have fun!

first research breeds for one or two that are likely to suit their lifestyle in terms of space, time and energy. I’d suggest they prepare their home for a dog and agree on a training method. Then I’d tell them to vis-it a few different shelters, together, and spend time with several dogs. They’d administer the personal-ity tests that determine whether a dog has any neu-roses they might find intolerable. Only then would they bring home their dog, but with vastly improved odds of him indeed being the dog for them. As it stands, this dog isn’t dangerous; he’s just uneducated. So I’d suggest two things: that they get serious about training, and that they become the pig. For detailed information on administering personality tests and preparing to bring home a new dog, read my book “I Just Got a Puppy, What Do I Do?” or visit unclematty.com. Woof!

Climbing up into his grandmother’s lap, 4-year-old Johnny asked, “How old are you, grandma?” Playfull placing her finger on the tip of his nose, she said, “I’m 39 and holding.” Johnny thought for a moment and said,“How old would you be if you let go?”

No Rush to File for Social Security Benefits Q: I plan to start my Social Security when I turn 65 in January 2012. When and how should I file? What documents will I need?
A: The Social Security Administration usu-ally tells people to file three months before they want their retirement benefits to begin. So you could start the ball rolling any time now. But you really don’t have to rush. Standard retirement claims are pretty easy for SSA to deal with, and they generally flow through the system in just a few days. I’m not saying you should wait until Dec. 31 to file for Social Secu-rity. The point is that you certainly don’t have to run out and file a claim tomorrow. But here’s another thought: You might want to wait until sometime in late January to apply for your Social Security benefits. If you put off filing your claim until after you get your 2011 W-2 form, your earnings will be added into your Social Security com-putation, which will increase your monthly benefit amount. Because you’re filing in January, your claim will be effective that month. You possibly might not get your initial Social Security benefit payment un-til late February or early March, but that first check will include benefits retroactive until January. I don’t want to scare you and other readers into thinking that you won’t get credit for your 2011 earnings if you don’t present them with a W-2 form at the time you file. If you file your Social Security claim tomorrow, for example, your initial benefit will be computed without your 2011 earnings added into the mix. But sometime during 2012, SSA will get a report of your 2011 earnings from the Internal Rev-enue Service, and at that time, your benefit will be re-figured to give you credit for the additional income. And that refigured benefit will be retroactive to Janu-ary 2012. You also asked how to apply for Social Secu-rity benefits and what documents you need. Today, most people file their retirement claims online at So-cialSecurity.gov. But if you prefer old-fashioned hu-man contact, you can call the Social Security Admin-istration at 800-772-1213 and set up an appointment
to file your claim by phone or even in person at your local Social Security office. Most people need only one official docu-ment when they sign up for Social Security retire-ment benefits, and that’s a certified copy of their birth certificate to prove they’re legally old enough to qualify for benefits. However, SSA is experiment-ing with procedures, and you may soon learn that you don’t even need to present a birth certificate. That’s partly because the agency may already have such documentation on file. If you presented the agency with a birth certificate when you applied for your original Social Security number and card, they may not need another copy when you sign up for retirement benefits.
Q: My Social Security checks seem to come on a different day each month. This makes it very hard to plan my finances. Why can’t they send Social Security checks on time each month? I know my mother always got her widow’s check on the third of each month.
A: All Social Security checks used to be paid on the third of each month. But sending out 50 million government checks all on one day was too much of a burden for both the Social Security Administration and the post office. (This was before the advent of direct deposit. So, many years ago, they decided to stagger the delivery of Social Secu-rity checks. They’re now sent out (or more likely, electronically transferred to banks) on either the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on a person’s day of birth. As a general rule, if you were born on the first through the 10th day of the month, you get your checks on the second Wednesday. If you were born on the 11th through the 20th day of the month, it’s the third Wednesday. If you were born on the 21st through the 31st day of the month, it’s the fourth Wednesday. So whichever Wednesday is your delivery day, it’ll obviously change from one month to the next. Looking at my calendar, for example, I see that the second Wednesday of December 2011 will be the 9th, while the second Wednesday of Janu-ary 2012 will be the 11th. But the point is this: Your check will be delivered on the same Wednesday of every month.
Q: I am a Canadian citizen who has been living and working in the United States
for 20 years. I’ve paid into Social Security all these years. I’m about to retire and plan to move back to Victoria, British Columbia. Will I get my Social Security checks there?
A: Yes, you will. The United States has So-cial Security treaty agreements with about 25 coun-tries around the world, and Canada is one of those countries. You can receive American Social Security benefits while living in Canada, just as a Canadian citizen can receive Canadian Social Security benefits while living in the United States.

Avoiding Falls at Home Have you fallen at home and not told your doctor? According to the Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention, one in three of us age 65 and older fall each year -- but only half of us tell our doc-tors about it. In 20 percent to 30 percent of us, falls can lead to hip fractures, head trauma and lacera-tions. Since we spend most of our time at home, the best way to reduce the number of falls is to make sure our living environment is safe, especially with the darker days of winter. Here are some steps you can take: Reduce clutter. Magazines and newspa-pers stacked by the recliner are especially danger-ous because of the slick pages. Don’t allow any-thing to remain in walking paths through rooms. In the bathroom, have grab bars in-stalled next to the tub and toilet. Make sure the lamp next to your bed is easy to reach. The touch-on lamps are best. Keep a flashlight there in case the power goes out. If you have stairs, make sure that rail-ings are installed and are secure. Never use the stairs as a place to set things. Turn on more lights. If you don’t have an overhead light in each room, plug in a lamp that can be turned on by a switch as you enter a room. Install the low wattage night lights that plug into your outlets and automatically turn on when it is dark. These are especially important to have in the path from your bed to the bathroom, and at the top of stairs. Never have an electrical cord stretched across an area where you walk. If you must have throw rugs, make sure they have a non-skid backing and aren’t placed in traffic areas. For more information, visit the Home Safety Council website at www.homesafetycouncil.org. Click on Older Adults. You’ll find a number of topics, including fire safety, stairs and ideas for making your home safe. Also check www.ces.ncsu.edu and put “Housing Safety Checklist” in the search box.

Humans Can Sprout New Blood Vessels DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don’t remem-ber you addressing this subject, so I thought I would write. In 1997, I had a mild heart attack and went on medicines. Six months later I had another mild incident that led me to angioplasty. Ever since, I have been eating well, exercising and taking all my meds. My cardiologist says I have great collaterals. I have sprouted new ves-sels for my heart. I thought I should have some kind of intervention, but the doctor says no. Can you discuss autogenesis? Am I related to a star-fish? -- R.S.
ANSWER: You’re the first writer ever to use the word “autogenesis.” If a starfish loses an arm, it grows another -- autogenesis. Humans have the same ability when it comes to blood vessels. They can grow new ones, and do so in many instances. Heart-attack victims often can sprout new arteries. It’s a long process. It doesn’t happen overnight. And it doesn’t happen to all people. Count yourself lucky. The booklet on CAD -- coronary artery dis-ease -- discusses how vessels become plugged and how they are treated. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You are familiar with energy drinks, aren’t you? Well, my teenage son has gotten in the habit of drinking them, at least in my opinion, far too often. He says they really do increase his energy and keep him alert even after having very little sleep. I’m worried that he is becoming dependent on them and that they might be dangerous to his health. Will you please provide some information and comments on this? I would like your opinion. -- B.B.
ANSWER: One kind of energy drink is a mix-ture of caffeine and alcohol. In November 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration declared such combinations to be unsafe. I’m sure your son isn’t using this sort of energy drink. Others are. Your boy is likely drinking caffeinated bever-ages. The amount of caffeine in these drinks ranges from 50 to 505 mg of caffeine per can. A 6-ounce cup of coffee contains 77 to 150 mg of caffeine. Adolescents drinking such large amounts of caffeine can suffer sleep disturbance, shaking hands and possibly a rise in blood pressure. One school district has banned these drinks at all prac-tices and games. I think that’s a good policy.
*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had my gallblad-der removed a year ago. I now have diarrhea, and the doctor says it’s from not having a gall-bladder. My doctor prescribed cholestyramine. It causes severe constipation. I now take half the dose, but still I have to be careful about what I eat or drink. Do you have a suggestion? -- E.J.
ANSWER: Without a gallbladder to store it, bile drips into the digestive tract constantly. That constant drip irritates the tract in some people, and it causes food to rush through faster than normal. You have found the cure for this -- cholestyramine. The only matter that remains is to determine the correct dose for you. That will come in due time with a little experimenting. ***
Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer in-dividual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an or-der form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN
by Pat Wilhite(aka: MsGoGetter)
I’m sitting at my kitchen desk in my new home at Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio, looking out the window at women walking their dogs, riding bikes, power walking, and a couple in their driveway chatting away. The men are out there too, only not in the same number.
I wish I could join them but I’m showing property this afternoon and I need to set up appointments and finish my research on the MLS. The folks I’m meeting qualify age wise to live in a 55+community but they are against the idea. “We don’t want to live with a bunch of old folks” they say.
What a pity, I think. While the husband likes the idea of living in a golf community, the wife doesn’t play and wonders what she will do while he’s out having a good time.
Gads, there isn’t enough space on this page to cover the opportunities open to both of them. Forget the obvious; tennis, card playing, pool activities, fitness center, bicycle trips, and tennis. Think outside the box: A number of women I know who live at Sun City Shadow Hills and Heritage Palms C.C. volunteer at the schools in Coachella, or find time to assist at homeless shelters, or act as spokespeople for children in the Foster Care system. They love their work and “yes,” I believe they would say they are having fun.
I’ve lived at both these 55+clubs and I’m a warehouse of information. I hope you will let me guide you in making your decision. “Ladies, 55 is the new 40.” You WILL have fun or my name isn’t….

Why Exercise? Q: Our parents are now in their late 70s and are basically very healthy, but I am concerned that they seem to have lost interest in staying active. They used to play tennis at least twice a week and took walks almost every day. Now they’ve decided they are too old for this kind of exercise, even though their doctor has been encouraging them to do so, as are my brother and I. We believe regular exercise and staying active is important to staying healthy, especially at their ages, but how can we con-vince them of this?
A: Tell them that the good health they cur-rently enjoy can likely be attributed in large part to the regular exercise they once had. Ask them how well their non-exercising peers are doing. Seniors realize as they grow older that they tend to lose some of their sense of balance and be-gin to feel more vulnerable to falling down. They are also aware as they age that they have lost the muscle mass, stamina and energy that they once had. As a result, some tend to be overly cautious and let the fear injuring themselves cause them to avoid exer-cise altogether. Choosing a sedentary lifestyle causes mus-cles to atrophy and makes us weaker than we should be. Inactivity can also lead to boredom, depression and undue stress. In fact, opting out of exercise alto-gether can actually lead to serious health issues. As seniors age they gradually come to the realization that they are becoming more dependent on others for medical care, general caretaking, med-ications, transportation and finances. They become more thankful for the ongoing love and attention they receive from their families and friends. So why not keep going as long as possible by exercising regularly? Some individuals, especially, after retirement, choose a laid-back “less is more” attitude and procrastinate about doing things that need to be done, even to their own detriment. Going to a senior center or for a walk around the mall boosts our heart rate, blood flow to the brain, and helps our memory and thinking process. Staying active lifts our morale, keeps us socializing, teaches us something new, and keeps us in touch and in balance. I recommend exercising on Monday, if pos-sible, and preferably in the morning. Once you put on your sweats and shoes, you have it made. Re-member, you’re not in training for the Olympics, so set your goals to your own needs. Even a 10 minute daily walk has been proven to be highly beneficial. A dog can become a great incentive for walk-ing. Sometimes this means wearing your raincoat! When you take your dog for a walk, you meet other owners, new friends, neighborhood parents and their children. The bonus is stopping to enjoy a few minutes to rest and to distract yourself from your routine. If you tire, park benches are usually avail-able. Also, in most areas, there are senior centers and YMCAs that offer both exercising facilities for enjoyment and socialization. Keep telling your parents that age is more defined by the amount of energy they have, not a by a number! It is never too late to restart their routine. Walking is the gold standard. Other major benefits
include: keeping your muscles stronger, increasing your energy, weight control, circulation increase and the stimulation of your heart. Exercise enhances your positive outlook on life. We all do our best to live independently, and a routine of exercising is one of the best reasons to get going in the morning! “Not exercising is like taking a depressant,” says to Dr. Michael Mantel author of “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff. /P.S. It’s All Small Stuff.” It really is as simple as that!

▄ On Nov. 28, 1582, William Shake-speare, 18, and Anne Hathaway, 26, pay a 40-pound bond for their marriage license in Stratford-upon-Avon. Six months later, Anne gave birth to their daughter, Susan-na, and two years later, to twins. Shake-speare’s plays were not published until after his death, when two members of his troupe collected copies of his plays and printed the First Folio (1623).
▄ On Dec. 4, 1928, “Dapper Dan” Ho-gan, a St. Paul, Minn., saloonkeeper and mob boss, is killed when someone plants a car bomb under the floorboards of his new Paige coupe. The first car bomb was a horse-drawn-wagon bomb that exploded in 1920 outside the J.P. Morgan Company’s offices in New York City.
▄ On Nov. 29, 1942, coffee joins the list of items rationed in the United States. Ration-ing was generally employed to guarantee a fair distribution to all citizens and to give pri-ority to military use in World War II.
▄ On Dec. 2, 1959, the Malpasset Dam in France collapses after a week-long rain storm, and the resulting flood kills more than 400 people. The city of Frejus, built by Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as a port city on the French Riviera, was devastated by the massive flood.
▄ On Dec. 3, 1979, 11 people are killed in a stampede outside a Who concert in Cin-cinnati when a crowd of general-admission ticket-holders surges forward through shat-tered doors in an attempt to secure prime unreserved seats inside. After the crowd cleared, 11 concert-goers were found on the ground, dead from asphyxiation.
▄ On Nov. 30, 1989, Aileen Wuornos, America’s first female serial killer, picks up her first victim in Palm Harbor, Fla. She would kill a total of seven men in the next year. When caught, Wuornos confessed but claimed that they had all been killed in self-defense.

Rescued Bronze Heirlooms Are Valuable Q: I have enclosed a photo of four bronze pieces that my wife retrieved from a pile of heirlooms no one wanted after my grand-mother’s death. There are two vases, a covered dish with a bronze handle and a large bowl. They are all signed in script with the name “Carl So-rensen” and in mint condition. My grandmother had a friend who would buy antiques from ev-erywhere, and she gave some to her. I suspect these came from her friend. They are pretty, and we would like to know if they are “Antique or Junque.”
A: Carl Sorensen’s metalwork is definitely not “Junque;” they are museum quality pieces. So-rensen was an artist from Pennsylvania who made hand-hammered bronze and copper pieces in the early 1900s. Most of his work was inspired by the Arts and Crafts Era. Although it is not confirmed, it is thought he may have worked for both the Roycroft-er’s and Tiffany. His vases and bowls were copper and bronze with a verdigris patina. Your circa 1900, antique, trumpet-shaped vases with copper bands have been seen for sale on the Internet in the wide range of $195 to $495 each. The covered dish has been seen as high as $795, and the bowl with concentric circles of copper around $250 to $400.
Q: This mark is on the bottom of a por-celain covered cheese dish. The dish is octagon shaped, hand painted and decorated in green and gold. There are two small holes near the handle. It was given to us around 1950 and is still in excellent condition. Can you tell me something more about it?
A: The “M” in a wreath mark was used by the Morimura Brothers. They were New York importers of porcelain from Japan. “Nippon” is the Japanese word for Japan. As a rule, dishes with lids that have vent holes near the handles were used to serve warm objects. Chances are your dish is a pancake server. Your covered dish was made in the early
1900s and would probably be worth $125 to $150.
Q: I have my grandmother’s carnival glass bowl and would like to know more about it. It is green, around 8 inches in diameter and has a ruffled edge. The outside of the bowl is deco-rated with small flowers and beads. The inside is smooth and has no pattern. Signed on the bot-tom is an “N” in a circle.
A: Your bowl was made by Northwood Glass Co. The mark you described was used from 1905 to 1915. The pattern is “Beads.” Your bowl would probably be worth $50 to $75.

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson
Tina Mickelson PGA Photo by Paul Nassi
Bunker Drill When hitting out of a bunker, a common tendency for many amateurs is to decelerate or stop the club completely after impact. The re-sult usually leaves the ball still in the bunker. It is important to have a complete follow-through when hitting out of the sand, but for some play-ers it can be difficult to incorporate that feel. As a drill, hit some bunker shots with only your left hand (for left-handed players, use your right hand). This will force you to take a longer swing, as well as exaggerate your fol-low-through. Don’t lock your elbow or wrist after impact. Allow the elbow to remain relaxed and the wrist to hinge after impact and during the follow-through. This drill will give you the proper feel for what it is like to accelerate through the ball. As an additional result, you should find that you are now utilizing the full bounce of the club and that the club head slides through the sand much more cleanly.

• Talent seems to run in the family of Kevin Eubanks, former leader of the “Tonight Show” band. A classical pianist/organist mother and jazz pianist uncle no doubt contributed to Eubanks’ prowess, as well as two musical brothers, one a trombonist, the other a trumpeter. Eubanks is considerably more than the jazz guitarist we saw as Jay Leno’s musical sidekick on the Tonight Show — he is also accomplished on the trumpet and violin and has composed the musical scores for four feature films. ■
