So, by way of a change I’ll list people as they come into my brain and thank them all at the end. One unsung hero comes to mind is Malcolm Brown, you’ll never see his name regularly featured in the magazine neither does he attend our meetings but if you receive an Email from us or visit our website his influence is all around you – Malcolm looks after all our technology needs. You are reading this magazine because, throughout the year in all weathers, one of the team of wonderful and dedicated people has delivered it to you. These people in turn are supported by an equally fantastic group of bundlers and distributors. The magazine is printed by Errand Jervis Ltd of Portsmouth, the only professionals involved in the Association/magazine, it is here that David Haviland and his small team have to use an inexhaustible supply of patience each month to correct my editorial mistakes before they print the magazine. Our committee is quite small with some completing more than one role. David Pink as our President and Joan Rea as Vice President are a willing and knowledgeable basis of advice and experience that I often tap into. Eve Tallyn capably acts as the Vice Chairman and greatly assists her husband, Ken who as our Distribution Manager, probably has the hardest job of all getting 9,000 copies of this magazine delivered by his stalwart band of deliverers. As Secretary Hazel Matthews takes copious notes during our meetings and despite the inane mutterings I make into my beard she amazingly always produces accurate, succinct and relevant minutes. Hazel also acts as the Magazine Compiler; she gathers all the strands of news, regular entries and media releases together and then coupled with her own well researched, interesting and often thought provoking articles, presents them all to me once a month for editing. Nick Chedzey, our Treasurer keeps an accurate record of our accounts, books the venues for our meetings and can be relied upon to keep us humorously entertained at our Committee meetings. Ron Moore, also a Committee Member, is a dedicated andvalued member of our team and can be relied upon to askinteresting and searching questions.Clearly, it would be quite impossible for the Associationand this magazine to function without all of you I’vementioned above and I know many residents greatly valuewhat you generously do for them and the local community. So, on behalf of local residents may I thank you all for yourcontinued interest, loyalty and of the time and effort yougive? Finally, I would like to thank all of our advertisers, Countyand Ward Councillors, members of the Association andmembers of the public who regularly attend our publicmeetings. In the February edition I listed a number of cases andqueries the Association was trying to resolve; since thenanother public meeting has brought forward more requestsfor assistance, I will list these in later editions and hopefullyby then be able to say they have been resolvedsatisfactorily.Last March I wrote: “I think we are all too aware howtightly public expenses are being controlled and prioritised;this is naturally reflected in the responses we get to ourrequests for information or for work to be carried out andobviously this can be very frustrating for all concerned.”Unfortunately, nothing has changed and we must expectmuch of the same this year especially as in May we have ageneral election.

Geoff Lynch Chairman

Honorary Alderman Jack Carruthers

Jack loved metalworking and the pair of turned brasscandlesticks he made were on his coffin together with abrass cannon. In later years he took a great interest in,and was a Past Chairman of Age Concern Cowplain alsoan active Freemason. A lifetime supporter of Preston NorthEnd Football Club the flowers of the wreath on his coffinwere in the club colours.I am sure that anyone who knew Jack will join the Chairmanand I in sending heartfelt condolences to Jane, Rachaeland Andrew and their families at this difficult time. David Pink, President

Members will have been saddened to hear of the sad lossof Jack so soon after his beloved wife Jane.Jack was born in Preston Lancashire and was educatedthere in local schools. It was whilst attending the TechnicalCollege that he gained qualifications which enabled him tocommence a lifetime of Engineering.Joining the Merchant Navy he travelled the world beforesettling into Lift Engineering and Inspection in the Southernarea and came to live in Cowplain, with Jane and his family.Feeling that he would like to contribute something to thelocal community in his spare time he began what wouldbecome a 30year involvement in Local Government. As a Resident (Ratepayer) Association Councillor heprovided a wealth of experience as the last Chairman ofHavant and Waterloo Urban District Council enabling asmooth transition to Borough Status.Jack played cricket for Cowplain Cricket Club and one ofhis first forays amongst many over the years was to tryand improve the hygiene facilities at the Cricket Pavilionon Cowplain Recreation grounds, now the home of theCowplain Men’s Shed, after the internal relocation of thetoilets and the kitchen, the Ladies making sandwichesand cakes could do so without the perils of crosscontamination!

Calling All Grandparents – Future PlansAt Community First HEH we have been carrying outresearch into grandparents across Havant and EastHampshire who have a caring role for their grandchildren,to find out more about where they go for support and thetype of support they require. This research stage has nowcome to an end and we are using the results to inform ourservice delivery to help support grandparents who aresole or significant care givers. The results showed us that grandparents who care forgrandchildren have very diverse needs and find themselvesin this situation for a number of different reasons. One keyarea that the respondents said they would like somesupport with is the legal aspect of caring for theirgrandchildren, dealing with care orders and legalguardianship as it is a complex area. It is also potentiallyfinancially very difficult for the grandparents to deal withas it is often unexpected and the legal processes aresometimes very costly. The most requested type of support that the respondentssaid they wanted was a peer support group where theycould share their experiences of caring for grandchildrenwith other grandparents who had been through similarexperiences. A support group meeting will take place atWaterlooville Community Centre on 18th Mar between11.00am and 1.00pm. For more information contact LiamMoloney at [email protected] or 07922 631511

Poppy Appeal TotalsAs Poppy Appeal Organizer for Waterlooville I would againlike to express my thanks to everyone who has helpedmake this year’s appeal outstanding. And there is still moremoney to come! The centenary of the outbreak of theGreat War and the ceramic poppy artwork at the Towerhad an enormous effect and the residents of Waterloovillewere even more generous than previously. To date, wehave banked £24,327, as against last year’s £17,634, andthe previous best of £20,099 in 2011.I am indebted to a willing team of collectors. The late EileenStoat was missed by many customers at both Asda andWaitrose, but several new and young collectors joined my‘old hands’: I won’t name them here but have sent themthanks separately. I must pay tribute to the four ladies whofor the twelfth year in succession have counted the cash. And I am again indebted to Brian Andrews for his sterlingwork throughout Cowplain, and at Lidl’s with his own teamfrom the Purbrook Allotment Society. The manager, staffand events co-ordinator at both Waitrose and Asda madeour collectors particularly comfortable this year. It trulywas a bumper year in so many ways. The trophy for the collector who collected the most wentthis year to Mr David Allport, with a total of £1603. This waspresented to him at the recent meeting of the Horndeanand Lovedean Branch of the Royal British Legion by itsPresident, Admiral Sir Geoffrey Dalton.
