In the news these past few months, we have seen that there are many dark issues surrounding Manila. Since this is a lifestyle magazine, it’s important to remind ourselves that while it is easy to dwell on the negative, we need to face the reality as expats that we chose Manila. Whatever situation brought us here, there are many real reasons that make Manila the place we decide to make home.

This issue specially celebrates the international world that surrounds us just in this urban city. Nowhere in Asia can we find so many cultures well-represented. From historical events to economic situations to a need to get away from it all that brought us here, we share the same love of Manila’s special brand of awesome.

WHAT’S UP!


As Manila tries to reach levels of modernity and high class efficiencies, one portion that still gets a bit too confusing is the airport fiasco. While all four terminals are close enough together, it will still take a knowledgeable local to know where to go and when to go to make sure you don’t miss that flight. A few helpful tips:

1. Terminal 1 is the oldest terminal and used for most of the international flights. If you are flying internationally, most likely you will be going from this terminal. Terminal 2 is strictly Philippine Airlines, domestic and international. Terminal 3 is the newest and carries a couple domestic carriers and ANA. If you are flying domestically, but not with Philippine Airlines, you may be flying from here. Terminal 3 is still underway of

collecting more carriers, so be sure to check your itinerary with the correct terminal. Bonus: This terminal is the closest to Resorts World. Terminal 4 is a simple domestic terminal that carries low budget options.

2. While there is no MRT or LRT to directly link you to the airport, a shuttle for all three terminals are just off of the Taft stop on the MRT and the EDSA stop on the LRT. Follow the bridges to the Sogo Hotel and downstairs to find the shuttles.

3. Traffic in Manila is always the most tedious of activities. While flight announcements usually suggest to arrive at the airport two hours before departure, make sure to leave an extra hour of “buffer time” in case of rush hour, holidays, rain, flooding, or Fridays.

No matter where you go in the world whether it be the green-infested land of Iceland, the ice-infested land of Greenland, the Islands of Tahiti, or Islands of Philippines....You’re gonna need to sleep, cause sleep is what keeps us travellers...traveling.

The question is: How do you rock yourself to your cozy little dreamland? Do you place your hands to the side and try the classic Side-sleeper Technique? or do you shove your arms snuggly into your pillow and initiate the Pillow-Armer? The way you defeat your awake-ness is up to you. Personally, I’m a Fortress sleeper. I’m in the business of encasing myself in poofy pillows

as they surround me with their soft heavenly bliss. But that’s me.

STORYTIME: COCAINE YOUR BREAKFASTIt was the morning time at our house. Our helper wanted to make us something to eat. Since she doesn’t understand English, my brother-in-law decided to joke around. “Sir! What do you want to eat?” she asked. He replied “Cocaine!” multiple times. After the 4th time she looked at him straight in the eye and said, “Yes sir! I’M GOING TO COCAINE YOUR BREAKFAST!” It’s a shame “Cooking” and “Cocaine” sound so similar.

While some may have their opinions on the go-to American combinations, many would nod their heads in agreement with Wings and Beer. Wingman offers all the nation’s favs: sliders, milkshakes, burgers, and fries. Not to mention way too many flavors of chicken wings. If The Collective is too hard to find, the good news is at they will be in two more locations; New-port City and Acacia Town Center..

Although the fare in Publiko is as varied as their types of beer, the feel of the restaurant and the feel of the food in the belly is very American. If you don’t believe me, try their Mama’s Meatloaf. Wrapped in bacon with chunky mashed potatoes, it’s so good, you’ll gobble it up like first helpings of a Thanksgiving dinner with a belly ache soon to follow.

New to the Eastwood scene, Publiko boasts as the only draft pub in the area, selling goodies such as Hoegaarden and Beck’s. Sister to Manila’s heavy hitters of Draft, Opus, Distillery and Beso, Publiko also guarantees what the customer wants. Journey around the world and everyone will know the story of “The Wizard of Oz”, a magical story of ruby slippers, houses falling from the sky, and wicked witches. However, over the past few years, “Wicked” has been enchanting nations with their rendition of the world of Oz before Dorothy dropped in.

The story of Wicked focuses on the relationship between Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West. It’s a tale of friendship, heartbreak, magic, and love. With some glimpses of the story we know from childhood, Wicked takes a different approach of addressing prejudice and the truth of what makes someone “wicked.” But beyond the themes of today’s world, we are taken by the hand to experience a story as rich as the best movies and music that will even get your boyfriend singing. Wicked is unlike any other musical, being a three time Tony Awards winner and the 11th longest running show, celebrating it’s tenth performance year in 2013.

Finally, Manila can now “Dance Through Life” and “Mourn for the Wicked” as the production will be now playing in the CCP Main Theatre starting January 22 until February 23rd. SPOTLIGHT: THEATRE

Like in Texas or other cowboy states, nothing says American like a large plate of meat. Steak places can often take a large chunk of change, so it's great to find some alternatives that satisfy a steak craving, but leaves you with enough cash for dessert.

Originally a Filipino restaurant, Bistro Alfonso dove into Western fare to accommodate their partner Flaming Wings, a chain around the Metro.

On Leviste Street as a favorite for office lunch breaks, Bistro Alfonso has great bar chow, a reasonable drink menu, and even a videoke room. However we recommend their Steak and Eggs, Baby Back Ribs, and the Chuck's Burger.

If you have room for dessert, nothing follows steak more than Warm Brownie ala Mode. Nothing says American more than the French word "ala mode."

All over the city, you can find a good burrito done the Mexicali way. Themed as a more California-style approach to Mexican food, Mexicali has fillings of all kinds. Just like any proper American eatery, choices are a must. Extra meat is an easy option along with making your burrito plain or “wet,” adding special sauce to the top. (We recommend!)

CHINABINONDO:Manila’s Piece of ChinaBeing the largest group outside of the Philippine locals, the Chinese culture and food is nearly as iconic as the country itself. The first spot to find the best is in Binondo.

Start the journey with Lucky Chinatown Mall, the newest establishment in the city and a good starting ground. Not only does it look familiar to the many malls in Shanghai, but it’s only a small hop, skip, and jump to delicious Dong Bei Dumplings, mouthwatering milk tea, and tasty turnip cake. If you can navigate, Ongpin Street, it can feel like a little bit of Hong Kong. Keep and eye out for hopia (bean cake pastry) in Eng Bee Tin stores.

On Benavidez Street, you can find Lan Zhou La Mien, hand pulled noodles in a beef broth soup and if in the need for the real deal Chinese eating, taking your chances in any establishment will sure lead you to some good eating.

If the LRT is a little far for you, there are quite a few options in the Makati district. In the new Glorietta 2, Modern Shanghai and Wee Nam Kee are great options for good food. Crystal Jade in Fort High Street is an excellent option and if all else fails, some yum Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) in Shi Lin are pretty darn good. While this is quite food centric, just being in Manila can easily show the large

influence the Chinese have made to the city and to the country of Philippines.

From the authentic sushi restaurants to the new and modern ramen shops, Manila has taken the best of Japan and done it some good.

In Legaspi Village in Chino Roces, we find the heart of Japan Town. There you can easily get lost in their narrow alleyways and find yourself in the middle of skewered chicken with teriyaki sauces and octopus balls with the perfect beer garden feel. For great food, make sure to try Seryna, WU! Manila’s favorite spot for good food. Around the corner is Shinjuku for one of the first ramen shops in the city. And all else fails, you can always go into any of their Japanese markets for a treat you don’t have to travel three hours by plane to have. But besides J-Town, more food can be found all over.

Kokoro Ramen on Roxas Blvd is one popular spot. An adorable coffee

cafe is a few streets away. In Fort, Arafu Cafe is a small spot that has great homecooking. Not the fancy sushi and sashimi we know, but the hamburger steaks and fried chicken that many Japanese locals love.

Ramen Stores have popped up everywhere, but did you know there is a difference with each type. Ukkokei Ramen on Pasay Road has many of the staple types that can be found in the corner shops of Tokyo. Santouka Ramen in Glorietta hails from Hokkaido and the newcomer Ikkoryu Ramen in SM Aura and Rockwell is a great example of Fukuoka Ramen. And Wrong Ramen... they’re just clever... Just in the city alone, we can find so many examples of the real deal with Japanese food and remember, two of the three WU! owners lived in Japan for two years.

Philippines has long been the vacation destinations for the hard workers around the world, but none as many as the Korean expats. While P. Burgos has a reputation of some “good times” it also has some great hidden spots of delicious Korean dining.

Along the small roads, you can stop by to grab a Melona Bar in one of the K-Marts in the area. You can also get a little brave and try the Jjimjilbang (Korean Bath House). Let’s also never forget the growing fame of Shin Ramen,

super spicy instant noodles. But when on the route to find tasty tasty Korean food, the top to try in any restaurant is:

1. Kimchee

2. Jeon (pancakes...not the sweet kind)

3. Bulgolgi (marinated beef)

4. Bibimbab (Hot Pot Fried Rice)

5. Kalbi (spareribs)

Hearty and Healthy, Maru grills up some good food. With over three locations, Maru is conveniently located.

Starting out as a small canteen in Malate six years ago, Maru’s recipes come from the best chefs, Korean grandmothers. It has easily become one of the Korean expat favorites.

Much effort is placed on making sure that while the food is delicious, it is also healthy, making it an option you wouldn’t feel bad to enjoy again and

again. On the second floor of the Makati branch, Maru has separate rooms perfect for having small parties and gatherings. Besides using the local fruits and vegetables, everything else is imported from Korea to make sure it has an authentic feel.

What sets Maru apart is their attention to their customer’s need and a light and happy attitude. Be ready to eat to your heart’s content with a glassful of soju and a mouthful of barbecue, just like how they party in Seoul.

Brotzeit provides a genuine German feel, complete with tasty sausages, sweet plum sauce, breaded goodies, and cold Paulaner beer. Starting strong since March 2013, Brotzeit is the answer to finding Austrian and German goodies to please those needing a good brezn or schnitzel. Any main on the menu is delicious, but save space for the Emperor's Cake, or if no sweet tooth...a 3L glass of beer!

The idea of Yugoslavian food is a bit elusive to the international palette, but it hasn’t stopped a few trailblazers in Manila from creating more and more of this delicious cuisine.

Based of of the southeastern European countries, traditional Yugoslavian food is usually hearty and warm: soups, stews, smoked and minced meats, and kebabs spiced delicately to make its own signature flavor. Although Manila does not create an atmosphere of needing to curl in a blanket with some warm soup, Balkan does tug onto the hearts of meat lover and comfort food-eaters. The best

Unanimously decided, La Tienda is one fantastic Spanish gem. A creation of Señor Urra, descendant of Navarra, Spain, La Tienda was created in 1994 as a labor of love.

With the luck of finding a chef from the same area, Señor Urra has

their massive paella. Our recommendation is the chorizo frito, boquerones, Gambas al ajillo, and Paella mixta . Join them nightly and be serenaded by talented musicians and be invited into the family.

A Generous portion of German AuthenticityA Yugoslavian eatery with a taste of its own

DUTCH BREAD HAUZIn any great story, readers are always captivated by the hero that has to trek through the wilderness with high possibilities of becoming lost only to find the treasure at the end of the road. In Manila we are often satisfied with what is easily available that we may get lazy to find a place based on quality. Well, in between Makati Ave and Rockwell Powerplant Mall, there is a bakery down a small road that would satisfy any soul for the perfect loaf of bread.

This modest bakery/cafe/sandwich shop is located on the corner of Matilde St and “almost there”. Dutch Bread Hauz was a creation built

on quality ingredients and the European taste buds. From sweet Berliners to chewy Multigrain bread, Dutch provides such a large array of bread that brings one back to the times of old. If there for a lunch, the sandwiches are filling and nourishing. The coffee is strong and the atmosphere is calm.

It’s a great place to get away from traffic and smog. Once found, it can easily be a go-to spot for a relaxing time with friends. If coming from Rockwell, follow the road to Kalayaan and turn on Matilde where you can see the sign. Follow that to the end of the road, before the Makati Elementary School. Great finds are worth looking out

for. Be the person in your group to know a place that many don’t...yet.

MOLLY MALONE’S IRISH PUBA little luck of the Irish in ErmitaHidden within Mabini Street in Malate, below the Tune Hotel, Molly Malone’s is sweetly designed with all the kraic necessary to have a good time. With beer favorites such as Murphy’s, Boddington’s and Guiness, you’ll be singing to some folk tunes with a rowdy group of friends. But let’s not be limited to a good drink.

Molly’s also provides great food. For good Irish fare, try their Sea-food Chowder and Lamb Stew. If you’re in the mood for a large meal, challenge yourself to the Smashing Pounder, way too much on a plate. Any meal is enjoyable, but don’t dare leave without trying the Hokey

Pokey Ice Cream, vanilla ice cream mixed with honeycombs and berries. Adding to the luck of the Irish, Friday and Saturday, local bands add to the dark interior and happy hour runs every night. For an extra addition, enjoy the annual St. Patrick’s Day event in March.

An Authentic European Experience right in Makati

WILD GINGERCARRIES ENOUGH SE COUNTRIES TO MAKE A CONTINENT

Exclusively in Powerplant Mall with more expansions on the way, Wild Ginger (named from the rare ginger that is used in their dishes), provides the best of Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian dishes. Being an original concept coming from great establishments such as Cafe Meditterranean, Wild Ginger has already paved the way for high standards of flavor and service. With the decorations almost looking like a mini museaum, it is worth a look and a few bites or so. Everything is good, but we recommend the Beef Rendang, Green Mango Salad, and the Crispy Spring Rolls.

SOM’S NOODLE HOUSEGood enough for royalty? Good enough for me.

Even though it seems like the best restaurants are in only certain parts of the city, (Fort, Eastwood, Salcedo Village...) it’s always nice to find that silent spot that has made its mark with their good food. With the chef’s royal stamp of approval and his dedicated wife’s know how, Som’s is a beautiful story of success from quality. Though the decoration would not scream authentic Thai, the proof is in the...Phad Thai. Nestled in a small street before turning into Rockwell, sit down to have a taste of their Shrimp Cakes, Curry, and Bagoong Fried Rice.

SOUTH EAST ASIA

SPOTLIGHT:SUAY THAI MASSAGEThe land of Thai often brings feelings of calm and peace (unless going to a Full Moon Festival), so bring those feelings back with a visit to Suay Thai in Binondo.

In the 168 mall on the 6th floor, kind thera-pists are waiting to give you the service that you need and the relaxation you want. They specialize in Tradional Thai massage, but also have an array of facial, paraffin, and nail treatments. Choose any service and enjoy the smell of jasmine and the rolling touch of the masseuse and forget for a second where you are.

MEDITERRANEAN/INDIAN

Escape to the serene world of the Meditteranean, where the tastes of Greece, Morocco, Turkey, and the Middle East combine into one festive restaurant. With over 11 restaurants in the city, Cafe Meditteranean has long been the spot in the city for this type of culinary delight. Best to try the moussaka, lamb stew, and kebabs.

On Dela Costa Street in Salcedo Village, New Bombay is the best spot for only Indian, authentic Indian. Celebrating cuisine from both North and South India, New Bombay brings out curries, tikkas, and paneer of all delicious sorts. They have over seven branches in Manila, but their branch in Salcedo is where you can get the Southern feel. Give their Masala Dosa a try. If you aren’t sure what to get, talk to Tony, the nicest manager WU! Manila has ever met.

RUNNINGIf you really want to delve into a city and see what it’s all about, the Hash House Harriers is the club for you. They’re a social club that organized runs through the cities. There are 100s of chapters set up through-out the world and there is most likely one, where you’re going. New routes are creat-ed by veteran members, they’re not com-petitive and stopping for a beer along the way at an interesting pub is encouraged. Try out the club here in Manila and find a new part of town and some new friends while you’re at it.

DIVINGThe great thing about Scuba Diving as a sport is that it is un-touristy as it gets. No tours, no lines and just about everything under the water is as real as it gets. Aside from the myriad of breathtaking marine life, there are sunken ships, planes and even cities that give us a glimpse of amaz-ing stories of history that will remain relatively untouched, unseen, and inaccessible

by most of the world. The odds are, if there is water near-by, there is a dive shop willing to take you somewhere interesting.


I found with cycling trips, the less you plan the better. As long as you have a place to stay when you land, a map to your destination and a bit of reserve cash, you’re good to go.

The adventure of not knowing exactly what’s next and where to stay really compounds the excitement. Just make sure there are big enough cities a ½ days worth of cycling in between you and your destination and I am quite confident adventure will find you. On my travels I was surprised to find that I often fell in love with small of the way places that I wouldn’t have ever explored seen or heard of if I were traveling by car. If you’re want to get into cycling, I recommend the following shops and clubs to help you get into road trip condition before your adventure begins.

Disconnected from the city life, sipping on a coffee (or cocoa) around a campfire with your closest friends while sharing stories is there perfect way to really get away from it all. Literally. And If you’re worried about getting sleep without a bed, just tack on a few extra miles to your hike and you’ll sleep soundly no matter what you’re sleeping on. =D

In my Forbes Park, Makati clinic it is very common for our affluent patients to travel either in or out of country, and it's interesting how often they make a visit to their chiropractor a very high priority when they get back home. Why? Because traveling is rough on the body.

The truth is travel by its very nature takes you away from home where you sleep on the perfect bed, with the right pillow and all the heavy lifting gets done by staff or younger family members. Then you are dropped off at the airport and left to fend for yourself to get your luggage through security, check-in and get your carry-on into the plane’s small storage space.

The plane ride itself is another problem wrecking your neck and cramping your knees. Back to handling your own luggage at your destination(s) and now to try and get a good night sleep with an unfamiliar bed and pillow. Getting around always means a lot more walking than you’re used to doing on a typical day and when you come back it's the same airport, plane and luggage scene all over again!

I know many of you completely relate to this story but what can we do to get back at least in the same shape we left? A few hints and practical tid-bits you may wish to consider doing:

1.Pack your favorite pillow or carry it on if you can

2.Tip porters to handle your luggage from curb to check-in

3.Keep your carry-ons minimal and light, wheels help

4.Use a neck rest or loosely roll up an extra blanket behind the neck

5.Get up often on longer flights and walk around, stretch

6.Don’t over schedule your visiting of sites, walk less

7.Use ice 20-30m minutes at the hotel on sore joints (back, neck, extremities)

Plan on visiting your Chiropractor when you get back if you were not successful with the above!

ADOBO: While it looks like a normal stew, it has a very specific taste that makes it a Filipino original. What makes this dish different from others is the use of stewing vinegar with the meats, making it a very unique taste. Chicken or pork, you can't go too wrong, but this one was...goat!”

DINAGUAN: Master this dish and scare your friends, While many countries do away with pork blood,

Filipinos would dare not waste it. So they've made Dinuguan, pork simmered in pork blood and vinegar.

Also called chocolate meat, it's one of the ultimate "bucket list" food.

LAING: Think of it as exotic creamed spinach. Laing is a delicious and quite healthy choice made from taro leaves and coconut milk. A couple of spices are usually thrown in and it all goes so well with some rice.

PINAKBET: Sautéed vegetables. Made with a fish or shrimp sauce base, most pinakbet will include

pumpkin, eggplant, beans, okra, and bitter melon. Many either love or hate the bitter melon, but the

rest are fairly identifiable.

ISAW, BETAMAX- BBQ basics, it’s challenge time. Similar to the internationally known balut, Isaw and

Betamax are those things you just need to try and will probably be surprised with how normal it tastes.

Isaw is cleaned chicken intestines, usually served with vinegar. Betamax is congealed chicken blood,

named from those old video devices that no one under 25 can remember.

LUMPIA UBOD- can easily be identified as a type of Asian spring roll, Pinoy Style. Usually made with heart of palm or bamboo shoots, lettuce, veggies, and a special sauce, Lumpia is one of the healthy choices. Unless you order Lumpia Shanghai. This well known bar snack is less healthy and more crunchy, but still packed with tasty flavor.

KINILAW-An easy way to look at it is a kind of ceviche made with raw fish “cooked” with vinegar.

Although some may not be comfortable with choosing raw food in Philippines, it’s a dish not to

be missed especially when having a beer.

GARLIC RICE - I KNOW GARLIC. I KNOW RICE. ENOUGH SAID.

BINAGOONGAN RICE- Hard to pronounce, but easy enough to understand. The Filipino fried rice made

out of shrimp paste. This rice goes well with any dish it accompanies. Many will say be careful of choles-

terol, I say be careful of my fork and spoon!

LECHE FLAN- A thank you to our Spanish friends, Leche Flan is super tasty in Philippines. Whether in the States or Europe or somewhere in between, you’ve had Leche Flan, so give this one a try.

KAKANIN- This type of dessert is made out of sticky rice that has a sweet flavor. Usually mixed with

coconut milk, sweet beans or fruits, Kakanin is a dessert that is not so easy to find, but worth a try

once you come across it.
