W e l c o m e t o September. It has been a busy summer and it seems to have flown by.

Sea Breeze had an interesting experience of democracy in action.

Many of us attended the Lacey Township Council meeting on Thursday August 13. As a matter of fact we filled the meeting to standing room only capacity. I am sure that we impressed the Council. Nick Spaltro, Gary Notte and Craig Wask all spoke on our behalf expressing our concern over our tax assessments. While we received sympathetic comments from the Council they indicated that there was nothing they could do. Our soon to be formed Civic Committee will be pursuing this further.

Many of us attended the School Board meeting because of our concern about the 65% of taxes that we receive. See our article describing our effect on the town leaders.

We were able to get the Council to add a referendum to the November ballot regarding moving the school budget approval to April. However we have since found that this is not binding. Our new Civic Affairs Committee has its work cut out for it and we should all support them.

We have lots of interesting reading this month.

When a Book is no longer a BookBy Bob Sherman

Books have come a long way since the invention of the printing press. For years the process of reading a book involved going to a library or bookstore, making a selection from what is on the shelves and taking it home to enjoy. All of that has changed in the last decade. With the advent of the e-reader we have greatly improved upon the convenience of one of life's most enjoyable pleasures. But somehow it's just not the same and we did give up some things as a price for this convenience.

What could be more convenient than having the library or the bookstore open 24/7. If you're up at 3am and would like to start reading the current best seller you can purchase it without delay. No need to worry about the bookstore running out of copies. You can also visit your local public library, the county or state library or other libraries around the world without removing your slippers. Unlike your physical library, there is no need to return the book to avoid fees as it just goes poof when your time is up.

No more injuring your back carrying a busload of books as most e-readers weigh just a few ounces and can contain over a thousand books. This is a huge advantage when traveling and trying to avoid airline baggage fees. And for some of us who face a challenge trying to read small print, nothing could be better than being able to adjust the type size to your personal preference.

While the benefits of an e-reader are many, there are some drawbacks. Unlike a book where dropping it or spilling your coffee on it will only cause cosmetic damage, your e-reader and what you

have stored on it could be a complete loss. And a book is always there to read as long as you have some light. Not so with an e-reader which can run out of juice just when you reach a critical point in your mystery novel.

Perhaps my biggest beef with purchasing an electronic book is that you don't own anything physical. I always liked the idea that I could do whatever I want with a book I purchased. I could put it on my bookshelf to impress everyone, easily share it with someone, keep several visible at the same time when I am researching something, use it as a paperweight, door wedge, let my dog destroy it, etc.

I also don't like the idea that I must depend upon the retailer I bought it from to stay in business and keep it available to me if I need to transfer it to another device.

But who needs to buy a book anyway as the days of going to the bookshelf to look up something went the way of the dinosaur now that we have Google and Bing. I can find lots

of other things to use as a paperweight, door wedge or toy for my dog. How many of us even have a bookshelf now? Even if we do, we probably use it to display other things with only a few books tossed in as a reminder of what once was.

We have passed the “1/3 Homes Sold Mark!”

We have sold 194 homes to date and several depositors will be going to agreement by the end August. The road work is progressing on the bend of Arborridge Drive and Lovelock

Lane is starting to look like a real neighborhood. We have been very busy with closings this summer, 5

in June, 7 in July and should be 6 closings by the end of August. All of the model homes were sold this summer as you may have heard.

We hope that you will make a point to meet these new neighbors at the next “Yearbook Party” in September. Don’t miss this one; we will be handing out the yearbooks at the party. These yearbooks are a great way to help remember the names and faces of all the new people.

Lisa (Moraino) Helewa is back at the sales office working part time. Many of you will remember her as the smiling face at the front not that long ago.

Christine O’Toole has been transferred to Regency at Monroe. We were sad to see Christine leave but happy to have Lisa back.

We are looking forward to all that the fall brings. The Sales and Construction Team

A Good Time to Buy and Sell as Home Prices Settle Down

Home price increases may be leveling out, according to one closely followed real estate report.

In 20 major American cities, home prices this May were about 4.9% higher than May of last year, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index.

Price increases of single-family homes have settled at a steady pace of 4% to 5% said David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the Index Committee at S&P DowJones Indices. He said he expects price increases to slow over the next two years. Overall, 10 of the 20 cities surveyed saw housing price increases slow on a seasonally adjusted basis. Between April and May, the indexed slowed 0.2% on a monthly, seasonally adjusted basis.

A separate report last week showed median sale prices of existing homes hitting a record high, increasing 6.8% year-over-year to $236,400, the National Association of Realtors said.

According to Fannie Mae’s most recent monthly National Housing Survey, consumers are increasingly more positive about the housing market. When asked if they felt it was a good time to sell a home, 52% of survey respondents said they believe now is a goodtime to sell. According to the National Association of Realtors, 45% of homes sold in May were on the market for less than a month.

For buyers, mortgages are still very low. Most 30-year fixed rate loans are just above4%. But this a slight increase from the dramatic lows of 3.59%. Those rates have been offered for more than four years.

With the supply of homes for sale down, buyers have to focus on their goal, making sure to get pre-approved for a loan, and be prepared to make a deal. As interest rates slowly climb, buyers should consider moving quickly.

WE’RE BACKThe Knights of Columbus, Father Capodanno Council, Council

#6522 of Forked River will be holding their monthly Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, September 20, 2015 from 8:30 to 11:00. The Breakfast will be held at the Columbian Club Hall located at 15 E Lacey Road, Forked River.

We will be serving pancakes, scrambled eggs and link sausage. Also, coffee, tea, orange juice and hot chocolate will be available along with a selection of bagels.

Age 5 and above, cost is $5.00 per person. Children under age 5, eat for free.

We recently discovered a great ice cream shop on Route 9 N in the strip mall opposite Home Depot. It’s Sweet Kate’s Ice Cream.

The ice cream was delicious!!! I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the shop and with the friendly staff and owner.

They also sell candy and ice cream pies that look yummy. The prices are a little higher than Mrs. Walker’s, but the overall experience was worth it.

SEA BREEZE MAKES ITSELF KNOWN!!!!!!

By Ron MartynSea Breeze homeowners have made their presence

known. Both the Town Council and the School Board are now aware of not only our presence but also our desire to play an active part in local government processes. We are especially concerned with the ever-increasing tax hikes.

Recently a Civic Affairs committee was formed to work with both the Town Council and the School Board. The purpose is to understand municipal budgeting processes and procedures.

The goal is to at least work to contain costs and expenses.

50 of our community attended the Town Council meeting.

70 of our community attended the School Board meeting.

We have been recognized as a formidable entity. Now we have to maintain our momentum by keeping our large presence in each meeting venue. That’s how we will get things done.

A result of the School Board meeting is that the President of the Board asked to meet with our committee to walk us through its processes and procedures and to address any of our concerns. Concerns like solar panel debt, no bid contracts, etc., items that lead to tax increases. We’ll suggest ways to cut cost and minimize expense. We’ll keep you updated on the details.

A lot of attention has been gained in the last month or so. To say we have just begun would be a gross understatement!

We need to have more of our community join a committee. Your help is needed.

Work with the Civic Affairs Committee and join them at the next town and school board meeting. After all it’s your money we’re talking about!

Beautiful TreesWhen driving through

Sea Breeze at Lacey, there is a genus of tree that stands out as exceptionally beautiful. There are a number of them scattered throughout the community. They can range in color from white to red to purple and every shade between. The Asbury Park

Press recently ran an article about them.A short time ago when I was in Cape May I noticed

that they seemed to be everywhere in all shapes, sizes and colors. The Crape Myrtle is advertised as hardy in zones 6 & 7. Forked River is in Zone 7 according to the USDA.

Crape Myrtle must be in full sun for at least 6 hours each day. A single application of a 10-10-10 fertilizer each spring is about all the care they require. Consider it as an enhancement when you review your landscaping.

The Cook’s Corner

Breeze Way, go to:http://www.WaltsWanderings.com

Walt’s French/Pizza/Italian BreadSubmitted by Walt Bischoff

Ingredients

1 Tbsp sugar

1 cake or 2 envelopes yeast

2 cups warm water (120-125oF)

6 cups flour (bread or all purpose)

1 Tbsp salt

Preheat oven to 350oF

DirectionsDissolve sugar and yeast in water. Place flour and salt in large food processor or mixer and process. Add

yeast mixture and process or knead until dough is elastic. This is normally about 30 seconds in a food processor, 4-5 minutes in a Kitchen Aid or 6- 8 minutes by hand. Take your pick. Place dough in warmed (120-130oF) and oiled bowl. Cover with oiled piece of plastic wrap. Set aside until it doubles in bulk. Usually 30 minutes to an hour. Don’t rush it! Remove plastic wrap (save it) and punch the dough down. The dough should be divided into 2 loaves. Cover loaves with plastic wrap in draft free place to rise for about 30-45 minutes. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Put in oven and in 30 minutes it will be ready to take out and cool on a wire rack. For added flavor toast the sesame seeds, preheat the oven to 350ºF and spread the seeds onto a dry baking sheet. Bake until lightly browned, shaking the pan gently every few minutes to spread the heat more evenly. Typically takes 8 - 15 minutes.

If making pizza, with 10-12” pans, I divide dough into 4 or 5 parts. Roll them out, dust pans with flour, add tomato sauce, cheese (the more kinds the better) and toppings, bake in very hot 475oF oven for about 10-12 minutes.

Variations:Add 4-5 Tbsp olive oil to warm water. The cheapest, most yellow olive oil gives best flavor.Pepperoni Bread - Instead of forming into loaves, punch down and cut into two or three portions. Flatten

each portion into a rectangular shape. Take an egg wash (beat one egg with a Tbsp water and herbs ie parsley, oregano, basil or whatever turns you on) and brush it on one side leaving a one inch border w/o the wash. Place sliced pepperoni/sausage and cheese slices (mozzarella is best) along length of loaf. Now pull the sides over the filling and press seams together. Place on greased cookie sheet with seam facing down. Fold the ends under to seal. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seed. Bake as above.

Social Security 80 Years – Celebrating the Past and Building the Future

Whether you’re receiving benefits or preparing for retirement, plan for your “Someday;” create your own my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. If you receive Social Security or SSI, my Social Security is the fastest way to get your benefit verification letter. If you’re not receiving benefits, check your annual Social Security Statement using my Social Security!

Why Your My Social Security Account Matters By: Everett Lo, Social Security Administration

Have you set up your my Social Security account yet? If not, shame on you!

Everyone wants to retire… someday. Whether you are beginning your career, or are midway through, it’s not too late to start planning for your retirement. Even if you’re just starting your career, your “someday” isn’t as far away as you may think. Since you’re already paying into Social Security through mandatory FICA contributions – just check your pay stub - you’re going to want to know what your future Social Security benefits will be. You’ll also want to check your earnings for accuracy, since the amount of your future monthly Social Security retirement benefit is based on the amount of your earnings over your career – highest 35 years of work, to be exact. But how will I know whether Social Security has my highest 35 years of work recorded?

“While workers need only ten years of work, or 40 quarters of coverage, to be insured for Social Security retirement benefits, we look at your highest 35 years of work when calculating your monthly benefit,” said Everett Lo of the Social Security Administration. “Want to make sure that we pay you the highest Social Security retirement benefit available to you? Check your annual Social Security Statement through your personal my Social Security account to make sure all your years of work are accounted for.”

Opening your my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount is one of the easiest and fastest things you can do to plan for retirement. It also affords you immediate access to your annual Social Security Statement, where you can check your actual work history. Set up your account, review your Statement, and then check it once a year until you retire. For most workers, Social Security is an integral part of our retirement plan, including many federal workers, so it’s time to make sure that your earnings information is accurate so that you are paid correctly when you retire.

About 20 million people already have opened an account and are taking advantage of the benefits of my

If you’re 18 or older, have a Social Security Number, an email address and a U.S. mailing address, you can set up your my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

If you already receive benefits, you can manage them online by starting or stopping your direct deposit and changing your address. You even can get an instant proof-of-benefits letter and a replacement SSA-1099 for tax purposes, and request a replacement Medicare card. While you still can call Social Security at 1 (800) 772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office, for people willing and able to do their Social Security business online, this means no more waiting on the phone or in line. Just go online and you’re done!

If Social Security is part of your life, you should take charge of your Social Security by setting up your my Social Security account today at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

PICKLEBALL AT SEA BREEZE

Joe DiGise

While pickleball at Sea Breeze may only be a year old the game is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. It all began 50 years ago during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island in Washington State. Barney McCallum set up a court in his front yard to play this yet unnamed game. As his neighbors, the Brown and Pritchard families and their sons, became involved and its popularity grew and rules were eventually developed. However they still struggled with naming the game.

The Pritchard family had a dog named "Pickles" that loved to chase down and retrieve the loose balls. Thus Pickleball became the official name of the game. Fifty years later Pickleball has become the fastest growing sport across the country...and here in Sea Breeze.

There are now 40+ Sea Breeze Pickleballers including 7 new players who were introduced to it on our recent Recreation Day. Official pickleball court lines have been painted on our two tennis courts thus making them usable by both our tennis and pickleball players. No longer will Sea Breeze pickleballers have to travel to play on official lined courts. We will be able to play at home now and hopefully attract more players. How great is that!

Until next time remember to stay out of the "kitchen".

5 Shocking Retirement StatisticsKurt J. Rossi

Many hard-working Americans dream of one day reaching financial independence – the time when they are no longer forced to work out of necessity. Unfortunately for many, the realities of trying to stash away enough savings to one day retire and maintain a comfortable lifestyle is much more difficult than anticipated. A lack of sufficient income, overspending, unexpected health care expenses and poor planning have all contributed toward the retirement epidemic we now face in America.

While the statistics below are surprising, they highlight the importance of developing a sound plan to anticipate and address common challenges faced during retirement.

How little most Americans have savedOne of the most troubling retirement statistics in

America is how little most have earmarked toward this goal. The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) notes that nearly 46% of all American workers have less than $10,000 saved for retirement with 29% of all American workers having saved less than $1,000. For pre-retirees nearer retirement, U.S. Census Bureau statistics note that the average savings for a 50 year old is approximately $42,797.

The cumulative shortfall in national retirement savings is even more staggering. Boston College's Center for Retirement Research has estimated that American workers are a whopping $6.6 trillion short of what they need to retire comfortably. Since retirement planning is such a long-term goal, many end up procrastinating rather than taking action to achieve their goals. Time is your greatest resource and the earlier you address your goals, the better.

Pushing back the retirement dateWith so little savings set aside for retirement it should

come as no surprise that many pre-retirees are inevitably forced to push back or delay retirement all together. The problem is that more Americans are delaying retirement than ever before. In fact, in 1991, nearly half of all Americans planned to retire before they reached the age of 65. According the EBRI, that number has dropped to just 23 percent today with 74 percent of retirees planning to work well into retirement.

While working longer can be a part of the solution, many workers incorrectly assume that they will be able to work indefinitely. According to a recent survey of Baby Boomers by the American Association of Retired Persons, 40% of retirees plan to work "until they drop." Unfortunately, unexpected health issues can force workers into retirement earlier than expected. It is advisable for retirees to set a goal/target date to reach financial independence rather than rely on an assumption that they will be able to work indefinitely.

Retirees continue to battle debt in retirementTransitioning into retirement free of any major

liabilities is a goal shared by many retirees. However, a survey by CESI Debt Solutions notes that nearly 56 percent of American retirees still had outstanding debts when they retired. Additionally, the number of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 filing for bankruptcy has increased nearly 178 percent since 1991. Bottom line – it is difficult to retire comfortably without having a plan to address outstanding debts.

Retirement population growing more than you thinkSenior populations are growing exponentially. According

to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 40 million or about 13 percent of the population over the age of 65. By 2030, it is estimated that the percentage of seniors will jump to 18 percent. By 2050, the number of senior citizens will double to almost 90 million. This explosive growth will inevitably place financial stress on the systems that help support our seniors.

Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security may experience significant strain in the future as our retired population continues to grow. With people living longer today, outliving savings is more of a concern than ever and is also important to have a plan to address longevity risk.

Retirement a concern for more RetireesMore and more Americans are worrying about

retirement today than ever before. A survey by Americans for Secure Retirement notes that 88% of all Americans are worried about "maintaining a comfortable standard of living in retirement." This is up from 73 percent in 2010. The survey also notes that nearly 80 percent of people ages 30-54 do not believe they will have enough money saved for retirement.

The good news is there is something that can be done about the retirement epidemic – plan. While it can be difficult to receive an honest assessment of your retirement, developing your financial plan and re-visiting it each year may help improve your retirement trajectory and ensure you are on a sustainable path. Retirement planning is complex and since everyone's situation is unique, consider speaking to your financial professional to determine the most appropriate approach for you.

Tips from a Local Girl

By Karen Roth

On July 24th, “Team Roth” (our adult children and ourselves) were leaving on a Norwegian cruise from New York to Bermuda. The more we talked about it, around the pool and with neighbors, the more advice we got. Many of our Sea Breeze friends had been on this cruise to Bermuda and gave us great advice. I thought this month I would share our experiences and our advice with all of you in case you happen to take this cruise yourselves.

We were sailing on the new “Breakaway” with 4,000 passengers! How would we know where to go once we got to New York? With a lot of advice and price comparison as to whether drive ourselves or book a limo… we chose Pro Limo, right here in Lacey. The owner actually lives on Newark Ave.!

He was a great guy and was extremely prompt coming and going.

The Breakaway is a very large ship with the newest of amenities, specialty restaurants and entertainment. It also had awesome children’s clubs that kept the kids busy from morning to night. Even exciting things for us “big kids” like mini golf, a ropes course, a zip line and waterslides. The shows aboard ship were awesome. We saw Rock of Ages, (adapted from the Broadway show), “Burn the Floor” (a Dancing with the Stars- type show) and Chicago’s Second City Comedy Show. The casino is always fun if you’re winning (we weren’t) and every night we seemed to end up in the Headliners Dueling Piano Bar! You say it and they play it! The audience joins in and it was so much fun.

Local Girl tip: If possible, book a limo and start your vacation from the time you sit in the back seat! It costs about $200 to leave your car in NY for the week and $25 for tolls. For only a little more you can ride carefree.

With Norwegian, you can book your shows before you leave home. They are included in your trip, but this will get you preferred seating.

Another tip is to try to find a trip that includes your drinks. A free drink package is the way to go! Even if you aren’t big drinkers these packages are worth the most amount of money. There’s nothing worse than a big bill at the end of a great vacation. Also, we were told to bring our own bottled water on the trip, a whole case or two. Just tag the cases and they will be delivered to your door like luggage. We took our water to the pool and on our excursions.

A friend told us to look for the Spice H2O Waterfall deck as soon as we arrived on the ship. This was an adult

only area with lounge chairs, a bar and a waterfall to cool off in. We ended up spending our sun time here on sea days. It was much less crowded than the pool area.

After a relaxing day at sea we docked in Bermuda for 3 whole days! We used “Snorkel Bermuda”, a small company that only took 10 of us out to a shipwreck to snorkel. “Sonny” was great and gave us the real Bermuda snorkeling experience. An hour later the snorkel trip from the ship pulled up with 85 people aboard!

Local Girl tip: You can book your excursions privately for the island; they don’t have to be done through the ship. We checked out tripadvisor.com and read the travel forums for our location. The reviews are the best way to see how well you will enjoy the experience. P.S. We also paid a lot less.

Our kids treated us to a Rum Swizzle Sunset Cruise that was very nice and Kathy Johnson had the time of her life on “The Wildcat Speedboat”!

No trip to Bermuda is complete without a visit to Horseshoe Bay. Beautiful rock formations rise from the turquoise sea and the pink sand is like powder between your toes….

Local Girl tip: There is a long downhill walk from the bus stop to the beach. If you have trouble walking try to find a taxi to take you down for $2. It’s definitely worth it, especially on the way up the hill! Beach chairs and umbrella rentals are available but the vendor only takes cash… be prepared. You can also buy a reasonable hamburger and fries at the beach.

Our snorkel guide gave us the best tip… walk up the beach to the coves for a day in paradise! Don’t stay with the crowd, you’ll be glad you explored. The coves are full of rock formations, their quiet and pristine and… the sand is “ pinker”!

The best way to get around the island is by bus or ferry. The systems are clean, modern and very efficient. My tip is to buy a 2 or 3-day transportation pass the first day that allows unlimited trips to all parts of the island.

Hamilton is known for its restaurants and duty-free shopping. If you’re out walking, seek out the parks and take a stroll. We took some great pictures!

St. George’s is on the tip of Bermuda and is known as the historic part of the island. The ferry ride there is about 45 mins. and it’s lovely to see the pastel colored homes along the hills. If you take the bus it will take you about 2 hrs. and you may feel a little sea sick! Bermuda is very hilly

and the roads are narrow. Everyone warned us that renting mopeds was dangerous… and I do think it is, even though my kids used them all over the island. (and of course, had the time of their lives!)

We headed to Blue Hole Park on the bus once we got to St. George’s. We had heard you could jump off rocks into the water! My daughter had researched the caves online before we left and found that if you take the bus to the Blue Grotto Hotel you could swim inside the caves! So, we walked thru the lobby and followed the signs for St. Catherine’s cave (no difficult walking). We walked into the entrance and behold… beautifully, clear water to swim in… inside the cave! We felt like we were on the moon! It was quite an experience!

A few steps away from the hotel on the main road was the Swizzle Inn (a must-do for Bermuda’s famous rum swizzle drink.) One is great, two is almost too many!

As you can see we like adventure on a vacation… but no matter how you spend your time in Bermuda you will enjoy this special spot in paradise. It was nice to have our “floating hotel” to go back to each time. Even though the kids thought they would stay out at night, to eat and go clubbing, they ended up back on the ship for the great “free” meals, shows and dance parties.

Norwegian cruises feature “freestyle dining”. There are no set dinner times and many dining choices. You may choose to pay an up-charge to eat at one of the specialty restaurants or there are at least 4 or 5 dining rooms to choose from each night at no extra charge. We ate at the Manhattan Room many of the nights. It has the feel of a 1940’s supper club with live entertainment. They also feature an Irish Pub for snacks anytime of day or night.

Local Girl tip: We did pay extra for, and I would absolutely suggest, the Cirque Dreams and Dinner Jungle Fantasy Show. It was a cirque de sole acrobat show with all its color, costumes and fantasy, over your head while you were eating dinner. We paid $40 extra each and we all loved it! I have to say the entertainment on the ship was the best I’ve ever seen on a cruise.

So, In case you are looking for a special vacation for your family, or just the two of you…check out the “Norgian Breakaway” and set sail for adventure!
