Checks In The Mail The MPSSAA will be providing a rebate to its membership of surplus funds. In July, each district will be sent checks totaling $1,000.00 per school to be specifically used for programs that directly benefit stu- dent-athletes. Distribution of funds will be based on the 2011-12 school membership (196 schools totaling $196,000). Since the end of the 2006-07 school year the MPSSAA has rebated districts a total of $670,000. State Legislature Passes HB 1080 on Heat Acclimatization Guidelines During the 2012 General Assembly, House Bill 1080 was passed by the state legislature and signed into law requiring a model policy for heat acclimatization guidelines by the State Department of Education and each local school system to adopt policies for heat acclimatiza- tion. The bill calls for the preseason practice heat acclimatization guide- lines to include requirements for the duration of a practice time, a walk-though, and a recovery period during the first 14 days of pre- season practice. A committee consisting of MSDE, DHMH, MPSSAA, athletic adminis- trators, coaches, athletic trainers and doctors has already started to formulate a model policy which will be provided to local school sys- tems by the end of June. 2012-13 Seeds Announced Semifinal pairings for the 2012-13 MPSSAA state tournaments were determined by draw at the April 27, 2012, meeting of the Board of Control. The semifinal pairings in the state tournament are as follows: MPSSAA Holds Scholar Athlete Luncheon The 2012 Allstate Foundation Minds in Motion Scholarship Awards luncheon was held on June 5, 2012 at M&T Bank Stadium. The MPSSAA, partnered with the Allstate Foundation, awarded 13 student athletes $1,000 scholarships toward their college education. The 13 award winners hailed from all over the state and were recognized for their achievements not only on the athletic field, but in the classroom as well. This is the fifth year for this highly competitive scholarship program which awards $1,000 toward post-secondary education for senior stu- dent-athletes who attend an MPSSAA school and participate in MPSSAA recognized sports. SSttrraatteeggiicc PPllaannnniinngg SSuurrvveeyyThe Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association(MPSSAA) has initiated a strategic planning process. As a pre-cursor to that activity, the Association conducted a survey fromlocal Superintendents, Athletic Supervisors, School Principals,School Assistant Principals, Athletic Directors, and Coaches.
This survey was used to gauge the Association's effectivenessand level of service while at the same time prioritizing the con-cerns of member schools. In addition, the survey asked foropinions about possible modifications to MPSSAA financial andadministrative policies.
Results of the survey, which will be used by the strategic plan-ning committee, can be found at MPSSAA.org.

Initial registration allots each school two (preferably one maleand one female) representatives. Schools may also register al-ternates with their two delegates and those alternates will beaccepted after May 11 based on space availability. The ca-pacity of the conference is 400 student-athletes. Last year’sconference was at capacity.
AAdduulltt CCooaacchheessEach school participating is recommended to have an adultcoach representing their school to ensure registered student’sattendance the day of the event and to participate in sessionsspecifically designed for coaches to develop leaders withintheir school teams.
CCoossttFREE – There is no registration fee. The conference is put onas a service of the MPSSAA and conference sponsors.
TTrraannssppoorrttaattiioonnStudent transportation to and from the event will be the re-sponsibility of participants. Please try to arrive by 8 a.m. to en-sure registration runs smoothly and we start the conferencepromptly at 8:45 a.m.
MMeeaallssLunch will be provided by the MPSSAA.
AAttttiirreeStudents should wear shorts of proper length, t-shirt and ten-nis shoes.
MMaatteerriiaallssConference materials and handouts will be distributed at reg-istration. Participants will also receive a gift and T-shirt.
