National Breast Cancer Awareness Month National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of screening and the early detection of breast cancer. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point during her life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women. The good news? Many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early. Mammography is the gold standard test for diagnosing breast cancer. The ACMC Mammography Program is accredited by the American College of Radiology. We offer expert care by board certified radiologists and certified mammography technologists. ACMC is proud to offer digital mammography technology. The benefits of digital mammography include: * Ability to adjust the contrast and brightness to improve image quality * Ability to see the image immediately - no film to be developed * Optimal compression of the breast for the best results * Reduced exposure to radiation during the exam * Computer Assisted Diagnosis alerts physicians to specific area of the image * Ability to view multiple images on the screen for comparison If further testing is needed, stereotactic breast biopsy is now available at ACMC. Stereotactic biopsy uses a small needle to retrieve tissue from the numbed area of the breast. The procedure can be done with the patient in a seated or reclined position for comfort. Traditional biopsy is done by making an incision in the breast while the patient is under general anesthesia in the operating room.
