DO YOU WANT YOUR PIN AWARDS? DID YOUR HOURS GET LOST???

A new committee of Alamo Area Master Naturalists is taking action in an attempt to provide members with award pins for hours earned. Some of our old records have been lost, especially regarding the 2002-2006 time frame. If you have records of hours earned during those years, we hope to hear from you so that we can complete our records.

John Wolcott [email protected] and Roy Yarnold [email protected] have not only volunteered to assist you with this effort but will also serve as the clearing-house for information regarding reported hours, hours that have vanished and those that have gone unreported.

As most of you know, each year we award ‘one of a kind’ certification pins for those who achieve 8 hours of advanced training and 40 hours of volunteer service. This year that pin is a wood duck.

Additionally, throughout the year, the milestone dragonfly pins are also awarded for 250 hours, 500 hours, and 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 hours of volunteer service.

We know there are members who have reached these milestones, but because of lost records we do not have a true total of hours performed. If you have records, by year, of your volunteer hours, and if you feel that you have earned a milestone award pin which you have not received, please contact Roy Yarnold or John Wolcott. Perhaps you will be seeing your name in print in this newsletter in the next few months. Let’s try to break the records set in 2008 for hours reported and number of members reaching recertification!

2010 Re-Certification Pin Announced!

The 2010 Re-certi-fication pin is the Wood Duck. The

recertification pin will be available for order in the first quarter of the New Year. The pin cer-tifies that a Master Naturalist volunteer has reached their annually required 40 hours of service and 8 hours of advanced training for the current calendar year. All service and advanced training has to be completed IN the year the pin is available. Once the calendar year is done the annual re-certifi-cation pin for that year retires. The 2009 re-certification pin was the salamander.

AAMN is always in need of talented volunteers to support its mission. If you have an interest in helping any one of the above committees, please contact the specific committee chair you are interested in serving.

BIG Tree Planting

City Forester Michael Nentwich invites his fellow Alamo Area Master Naturalists to help plant 25 large (45 gallon) trees on the schoolyard of Northern Hills Elementary School

on March 6, 2010. This is a large schoolyard with little shade, so the addition of these trees will be most welcome by the community.

MN's will help Michael supervise the work by leading the groups of volunteers who will be putting the trees into the ground. The first half hour (0800 to 0830) will be training in proper planting techniques, so MN volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. The planting holes will be dug before we arrive, so we can focus on getting the trees into the ground with the best preparation for success in their new permanent home. During the rest of the morn-ing, the City Forester will guide the MN's work with the neighborhood volunteers. Please bring your own gloves and kneepads and dress for the weather, as all activity is outside. Approved for volunteer hours

This tree planting project is part of a District 10 Neighborhood Sweep conducted by CoSA Housing and Neighborhood Services, and supported by the Alamo Forest Partnership. The City of San Antonio will bring tools, trees and other supplies.

HOt tub naturalistfebruary, 2010

It is mid February. We are at the Stock show working the Mas-ter Naturalist part of the Texas Experience. It is interest-ing how may people will NOT touch the skins. Every year

more people know the answers to what we teach here, which I hope means there is a bit more environmental consciousness.

The days are warm, the nights frigid. Gone for a bit are the rains. I know for 30 months I have bemoaned the drought. And I know I will eat these words. But Lord, could you stop the rains for just two weeks?

I haven’t gotten to part of my pasture since September. The ground is saturated. The tanks are overflowing. Some-how the farmer put in a crop which is growing mightily. When the rain runs off, where does it go? To our coastal es-tuaries? Will we have a bumper crop of shrimp and fish? Or will the salinity be affected? I did notice red buds and wine cups blooming while driving from Jourdanton today.

The household foods in the compost pit lasts days now. That means we lack the opossum and the raccoon. I found an opossum dead in the barn, a victim of my rat poison. It climbed on my workbench and what he did not spread about, he ate. I am still cleaning up mess. How he got in and failed to leave I do not know. Actually the barn is a nice shelter. I heard rustling in the back corner. And a squirrel likes the BBQ gazebo having made a nest on the top shelf.
