MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN On Saturday, May 26th our first graduating Class of 2007 walked onto the stage of the Ruby Diamond Auditorium in the Westcott Building at the main campus in Tallahassee. As each name was called, I had the honor of placing the graduation hood on each student. As you might imagine, they were all smiles as handshakes and hugs were given and received. Four years of hard work were rewarded with the confirmation of the MD degree and a “well done” from the FSU College of Medicine Dean and the President of the University.

All in our community who helped the Class of 2007 grow from tentative and clinically shy third year students into confident fourth year graduates can feel proud of their accomplishments. I certainly felt that pride as I stood and watched each one walk across the stage. Their respective family members were equally proud and demonstrated their enthusiasm with rousing applause for the entire Class of 2007.

With the graduation of this class, we have completed a full rotation of students through the Sarasota Campus. The next class will be here for their third year orientation at the end of June after which they will begin their clinical training, undoubtedly with the same hesitancy as did our new physician graduates. It is our responsibility and privilege to help them grow into the same confident young physicians as our first graduating class.

I want to thank everyone who has made the success of our students and our campus possible. To the hospital and community organization CEO’s who have provided wonderful facilities, the hospital employees and physician office staffs who have given a measure of kindness, the campus administrative staff who have acted as parents in absentia, the patients who have given their time and understanding and, most of all, to our community physicians who have given of themselves to help guide the students through the complex maze that is modern medicine—I want to say thank you. We would not have a clinical campus without your collective help and hard work.

Now we begin a new adventure. I look forward to working with each one of you over the coming years and helping our new students grow into new physicians. I’m certain that this will be a wonderful and successful educational adventure for us all. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Bruce H. Berg, MD, MBA Sarasota Campus Dean

THANKS TO OUR ENTIRE FACULTY FOR THE OUTSTANDING WORK YOU DO!

FACULTY COUNCIL COMMUNITY FACULTY AWARDS — SARASOTA REGIONAL CAMPUS Each year at the faculty appreciation event, we take a moment to recognize two faculty members who exemplify our mission and vision. While the focus is seemingly always on the student, we sometimes forget who makes it all possible.

We are so fortunate at the Sarasota regional campus to have physician faculty whose efforts have had a lasting impression on students, who continue to provide dynamic instruction and who serve as role models and exhibit attributes that our graduates can take with them into their careers.

We are extremely proud to announce the 2007 Community Faculty Award winners:

Dr. Steven Halbreich (Surgery) winner of the Outstanding Community Faculty Educator Award and Dr. Patricia Blanco (Pediatrics) winner of the Mission Model Award.

Both awards recognize specific attributes in physician faculty and we applaud them for their hard work and dedication to our program.

2007 Outstanding Community Faculty Educator – Steven Halbreich, MD

A COM clinical faculty member at each regional campus who demonstrates: • Consistent dedication to the 6 COM principles of the curriculum • Consistent dedication to identifying and meeting the educational needs of students • Enthusiasm for teaching • Participation in faculty development and • Willingness to work collaboratively with clerkship directors/clerkship faculty/regional campus

staff to deliver the COM’s clinical curriculum to students 2007 Mission Model Award – Patricia Blanco, MD

A COM clinical faculty member who has distinguished himself/herself by participating in activities that model the Mission of the COM to “educate and develop exemplary physicians who practice patient centered health care, discover and advance knowledge and are responsive to community needs, especially through service to elder, rural, minority and underserved populations.”

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

A WARM WELCOME TO SETH BRISTOL The FSU College of Medicine is pleased to welcome Seth Bristol to the Sarasota Regional Campus as our Informational Technology Coordinator. Seth has taken over the position vacated by Cliff Nichols who has returned to Tallahassee to pursue his educational goals.

While we were sad to see Cliff leave, we are fortunate to have Seth join our staff. Seth moved to Sarasota from Connecticut. He worked as a supervisor in the Media and Wireless departments at Best Buy and brings to us years of experience in computer technology as well as a solid understanding of how to provide exceptional customer service. Having those two components together has made his transition to the position much easier. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, please stop by and introduce yourself.

Welcome, Seth! We’re glad to have you here! SETH BRISTOL

CYNTHIA SAMRA, MD ASSUMES NEW ROLE Dr. Cynthia Samra, Clerkship Director for Pediatrics, has been named the new Information Technology Curriculum Director at the Sarasota campus. Dr. Samra coordinates the pediatric curriculum and training of the third and fourth year medical students at the Sarasota Regional Campus. In addition, she is responsible for teaching the students and clinical faculty how to incorporate medical informatics into the daily practice of medicine.

This position also exists at the Orlando and Pensacola campuses at this time.
