Void of the Course of the Moon

29
A Void-of-Course transit of the moon is a period of time between the last aspect of the Moon while transiting in one sign and the point that the Moon enters the next sign (ingress). It takes approximately 27.5 days for the moon to loop all the way around the Earth. Many interactions (aspects) are made between the Moon and the various planets as it cycles around the Earth. Typically, each aspect will last only for a few hours since the Moon's transiting cycle is the shortest (fastest) of all the planets. There will be approximately 13 Void Moon periods per month. The Void can last from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the placements of the planets. The Void-of-Course (VOC) is similar to a short-lived rest or a recuperation period for the Moon before it starts on its next emotional path into the fresh astrological sign. The Moon's transit through a sign sets the stage for our feelings. In addition, the aspects that it makes to the planets while transiting a sign tends to put a quick "spotlight" of focus to those feelings. Our frame of mind may be influenced during particular transits and aspects. Plus, the nature of that final aspect leading into the VOC will add a bit of flavoring to our emotional state during the Void Moon. We tend to feel a little lost during a VOC, because the Moon, representing our moods and emotions, is taking a bit of a nap. We may feel out of sorts, confused, frustrated, or rundown. But since the VOC is relatively short, we may not even really notice it all that much. It may have passed before we have even had the chance to put a finger on our feelings.

Page 2: Void of the Course of the Moon

The Moon is considered "Void of Course" when it doesn't make any major applying aspects before changing signs. When determining the Void of Course Moon period, traditional astrology only considers major aspects (that is, the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition) that are applying. Applying aspects occur when the planets forming the aspect are moving closer to the point of contact. In practical terms, the faster-moving planet (when the Moon is involved, it is always the faster-moving planet) is at a degree that is less than the slower-moving planet. For example, if the Moon is at 25 degrees Aries, and the Sun is at 26 degrees Libra, the Moon is forming an applying aspect (an opposition) to the Sun.

After the Moon has made its last major aspect before changing signs, the Void of Course phase begins. Therefore, in our example, if the opposition to the Sun is the last aspect the Moon will make before it changes signs (in this case, moves to 0 degrees Taurus), the Moon will enter the Void of Course phase (at 26 degrees Aries until 0 degrees Taurus in our example).

According to theory, most activities should be initiated when the Moon is not Void of Course. New ctivities started during the void period generally don't work out to our liking, or they need some serious adjustment in order for them to meet any success. Therefore, if possible, one should avoid going on a first date, a job interview, starting a business or project, and so forth, during the Void of Course Moon. In Horary Astrology, in which a person asks a question and then the astrologer draws a chart of that moment in order to find an answer, if the Moon is Void of Course, we generally consider that "nothing will come of the matter".

What is a Void Moon Good for?

Finishing up projects that have already begun before the void of course Moon. Taking stock, making to-do lists, and finding lost objects. Editing, refining, and reviewing. Social events with established friends and with family. Rest and sleep will be more peaceful during the void of course Moon. Getting rid of excess.

What activities should be avoided during the Void Moon?

Meeting new people with whom you might want a long-term relationship. Job interviews, presentations of new ideas Making important, large purchases (items bought now may not be used, might not turn out as

expected, etc.) Beginning new projects, launching a new business or starting a new job.

Electional Astrology using the Moon:

If you are interested in timing the initiation of a project or important activity according to a favorable Moon position, you should consider 2 major factors:

1. The Moon's first applying aspect after you begin your activity, which will symbolize how your undertaking begins. You should aim for that aspect to be a sextile or trine, and in some cases (depending on the nature of the planet), a conjunction.

2. The Moon's last applying aspect before it changes signs (shown in the tables below), which will symbolize the outcome of your undertaking. You should also aim for that aspect to be a conjunction (to an easy planet), sextile, or trine.

In addition to the nature of the aspect, the nature of the planet that the Moon is aspecting should be considered. It will describe the circumstances surrounding your undertaking.

Page 3: Void of the Course of the Moon

Another important timing factor involves the phase of the Moon. As a general principle, starting a project is more favorable during the waxing period of the Moon (from New Moon to Full Moon). You will want to conclude projects or do preparation work for a new project (not start a new one) during the waning phase of the Moon (from Full Moon to New Moon).

Each phase of the Moon is associated with a particular power or purpose. The New Moon is a time to begin new things, to be spontaneous. The Crescent Moon phase is an information-gathering phase, and a time to implement initial plans. The First Quarter Moon is a confrontational period when problems should be addressed, and laying of the foundations of plans is favorable. The Gibbous Moon phase is a time to make adjustments and refinements. The Full Moon Phase is a time for fulfillment. It is a point of unveiling and revealing. The Disseminating Moon phase is a social period and a time when sharing and understanding is highlighted. The Last Quarter Moon is a time of letting go, and the Balsamic Moon phase is a time of rest and reflection. Read more about Moon Phases here and see the Moon Phases Calendar here.

The Moon's Sign on a Particular Day:

The Moon favors these kinds of activities:

In Aries, quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects. In Taurus, substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor. In Gemini, mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands. In Cancer, domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.In Leo, creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.In Virgo, mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details. In Libra, relationship issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty. In Scorpio, taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things. In Sagittarius, adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, advertising, sports, physical activity. In Capricorn, long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments. In Aquarius, unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group. In Pisces, imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.

Page 4: Void of the Course of the Moon

Some Moon signs are felt more acutely than others: In the sign of Aries, for instance, the energy is physical and sometimes angry, a dynamic force that can be used to tackle tasks and start projects; the Moon in Taurus is a more laid-back and sensual urge to enjoy fine dining and good music. As the Moon arrives in the sign of Gemini, the telephone starts ringing and the messages begin to pour in. There are, of course, other influences at work in the solar system, but the Moon is always playing "background music" that keeps us connected to the Earth and the stars.

There is a time, however, when this connection is interrupted and we "float" between signs. This is the time we call the void-of-course Moon. It starts after the Moon has made its last major aspect (1) to the Sun or planets and is still within the sign, and the Moon is considered void of course until it enters the next sign.

The Moon goes void of course every two days or so, and this can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Sometimes, the Moon is void of course for two consecutive days; in August 2002, it lasted for almost three days when the Moon failed to make any aspects while in the sign of Cancer.

There is a distinctive quality to the energy during a void-of-course Moon: Stores and restaurants are unusually quiet, judgment is impaired, and many people have a hard time making decisions. Business meetings can take a strange turn, and people find it difficult to work together as a group.

Few astrology books mention this phenomenon, and there seems to be a lack of published information in this area. In an article about interpreting the void-of-course Moon in natal charts, Robert Hand quotes Julius Firmicus Maternus, a 4th-century Roman astrologer. "If however the Moon is so positioned that she is carried toward nothing, nor is she joining herself to any star by a proper ray, and no benevolent star occupies the angles, it will make degraded paupers, and those who are destitute of all things that are necessary, and those for whom the things which are an aid to daily living are denied, and those who always require the support of strangers in order to sustain life." (2)

This is what we found, plus some suggested ways to plan ahead and use the void-of-course Moon in positive ways.

1. Routine goes well, but take care when starting new projects.

2. Organize and throw out the clutter: This is an opportunity to get rid of the piles of papers and junk that have been accumulating. Files may be reorganized, desks and closets cleaned out; it is easy during a void-of-course Moon to see what is needed and what should be discarded. With blockages cleared, the natural flow of harmony and balance is restored. When the Moon enters into the next sign, there is a noticeable "sweetness" to the space that is created.

3. Spiritual disciplines like yoga or meditation take on a new dimension. Problems can be put on hold, and a state of inner peace is possible at these times. A luxurious timelessness pervades the senses. Music can be felt more deeply, and nuances of emotions are distinct.

4. Edit and correct: Writers use this time to revise their work. New ways of expressing ideas can be found during this time.

5. Take stock of your surroundings: Shortages, mistakes, and missing items are more noticeable during the void.

6. Sleep: Lazy morning and afternoon naps are especially tranquil when the Moon is void of course, and the line between sleeping and waking is deliciously blurred. Lucid dreaming can be encouraged by instructing the mind to find answers through dreams.

Page 5: Void of the Course of the Moon

7. Relax and "hang loose": Take time off to restore and replenish your internal batteries.

8. Look ahead and be prepared: This can be a most productive time for making "to do" lists and reviewing the status of projects. It is easy to see what needs to be brought up to date during the void-of-course Moon. Much can be accomplished, and a profound sense of clarity and satisfaction is often experienced.

9. Social events with friends can be giddy and intoxicatingly fun. Throw an impromptu party or a potluck dinner. Then add an element of surprise with games like charades or Scrabble where you make up the words and the rules. Do not serve food that takes too much preparation: Pick up some Kentucky Fried Chicken, and ask guests to bring cookies or a pint of their favorite ice cream for a taste test.

10. Travel: The void-of-course Moon can be a good time to take a trip, if someone else is doing the driving. A journey by air, train, boat, or bus can be relaxing, and the time will pass easily. This is because the trip is routine to the bus driver or pilot and airline attendants.During the three-day void in August 2002, I traveled via Virgin Atlantic to England. The plane was only half full, and the trip was trouble-free. The only challenge was the car ride to the airport. My driver did not speak English, and I didn’t happen to speak his native language (Russian).

11. Try something you’ve never done before. It’s not sensible to try rock climbing for the first time or to make a demo tape to launch your singing career, but it can be liberating to try a new activity when the Moon is void of course. A pioneering attitude in artistic pursuits brings results that range from groundbreaking to bizarre; intellectual and philosophical brainstorming can yield innovative ideas.

12. The inner voice can be heard keenly now: Intuition is strong during this time. Inner reflection can be more profound, and inner conflicts can be resolved.

What not to do during this time.

1. Do not start important or life-changing projects during the void-of-course Moon: The outcome will not be what you want or expect. We all have undertakings that remain unfinished; this is just one of the causes. In Africa, I understand there is a tribe that buries women with all of their unfinished projects – and they would have to dig a mighty big hole for my grave.

2. Try to avoid meeting new people: A first date or job interview should not be scheduled during the void. People you first meet while the Moon is void of course will not be who they appear to be; you tend to see them through rose-colored glasses, and this kind of euphoria doesn’t last. Disappointment and frustration result when they (or you) don’t live up to the image.

I have personally tested this tenet many times. My own rule is this: If the other person suggests a time that is void for a first meeting, I will counter with a time of my choice, but if this person insists, then I will go ahead – while staying alert for setbacks and hindrances to a long-term relationship.

One man (a prospective boyfriend) insisted on meeting for lunch when the Moon was void of course. He told me of his foot and shoe fetish, and I assumed that would be the extent of his weirdness. But on the third date, I learned that he was a "recovering" alcoholic. This became obvious when he soaked up three double scotches and peed on the floor.

I have noticed that relationships started when the Moon is void of course usually end with telephones being slammed down.

3. Do not start a new job when the Moon is void of course. My friend Rebecca called to tell me that she had no choice but to start her civil service position on a day when the Moon was void of course all day.

Page 6: Void of the Course of the Moon

"What will happen?" she questioned. "I can’t put it off, but I feel superstitious."

I told her that her job would either turn out to be something other than what she expected, or she would leave in an unforeseen way. She called a couple of months later to say that she’d be leaving her job before the year was out because, after three years of trying, she was finally pregnant!

For the sake of research, I asked: "Were you pregnant when you started the job?"

"No," she said.

(This is not suggested as a means of getting pregnant!)

4. Plans made during the void-of-course Moon do not turn out as expected: This can be used in a constructive way. Say, for example, that there is a luncheon you don’t want to attend, a relative you don’t want to meet, or an astrology reading you don’t want to give. By making plans during a void-of-course Moon, it is sometimes possible to steer clear of these events.

The only times this doesn’t seem to work are during Mercury or Venus retrograde. Plans made during Mercury retrograde usually have to be revised anyway, and since Venus retrograde is a test of ethics and integrity, the truth is likely to be exposed and the outcome will not be to your advantage.

5. Items bought during a void Moon do not fulfill their intended purpose. For more than 20 years, since first learning this rule, I’ve avoided purchasing high-ticket items during this time. However, on one occasion when I needed a watch, I knew that the Moon was void of course, but I decided to make the purchase anyway. It was a $10 watch and, I told myself, what the hell if it fell apart after a couple of months? That cheap watch, however, kept perfect time for seven years! The band was replaced three times. Only when I dropped the watch and the glass cracked did I decide to throw it – still ticking – in the garbage.

The void is a perfect time to go to the dollar store. Sometimes, the bargain-basement item proves indispensable, and the inexpensive gift intended for someone else is something you’ll want to keep and treasure forever.

Page 7: Void of the Course of the Moon

There is a great deal of talk in astrological circles about the Void Of Course Moon, and it is easy to see how the topic is filled with confusion. After all, there are many people teaching there own definitions of this term, and teaching them as facts, and so their students go out into the field armed with (they are sure) the 'correct' meaning for the Void Of Course Moon.

What we need to do is seperate the definitions into two categories:

1. What is the traditional definition....the one the ancients used?2. What are the definitions based upon modern astrologer's theories and/or observations?

Traditional Definitions

I found a very nice instance of the traditional definition in Anthony Louis' "Horary Astrology":

"The Moon or any planet is "void of course" when it makes no major Ptolemaic aspects before leaving its sign. Firmicus Maternus refers to the void of course planet as traveling in an aspect vacuum. The five major aspects used to make this judgement are Ptolemy's conjunction, sextile, square, opposition and trine." Al H. Morrison studied the Void Of Course Moon for over 45 years, and his conclusion was that the Moon was Void after its last Ptolemaic aspect to the Sun or one of the planets, and that the semisextile, quincunx or other minor aspect could not save the Moon from being Void. (He also concluded that neither Chiron nor the asteroids could stop the Moon from being Void either.) Al's research supported the traditional definition.

Modern Approaches

Mark Lerner, Editor/Publisher of "Welcome To Planet Earth" magazine, hoping to start a dialog on the subject, wrote in the Gemini/Cancer 1995 issue of that magazine, "Why only utilize the major aspects from the days of Ptolemy? Why not include the quintile, semi-square, sesquiquadrate and inconjunct aspects? Now that we've discovered the three outer planets (during the last 214 years) and they are included in modern Void Of Course work, why not add Chiron, the Four Main asteroids and other bodies? Where is the logic in this?" He then goes on to ask why we don't include the four angles, and the arabic parts.

In the same issue, Gregg Castellucci writes, "Technically, the Moon is "void of course" if it will not make any further major aspects to other planets before leaving a given sign. Quite often, in mundane and horary astrology, a void of course Moon does point to an apparent lack of momentum in the situation at hand. But what about the less obvious, the so-called "minor" aspects? Can these be tossed aside, disregarded? Is there a subtle difference between the Moon that will yet complete one of these before changing signs and the truly void of course Moon that will make no aspects whatsoever? The minor aspects are less obvious, both to the eye and in their expression. When the Moon is void of course except for such an aspect, this may indeed indicate a lack of objective momentum, apparent direction or conscious purpose. The minor aspect will, however, point to perhaps less obvious but nevertheless related matters that are yet to be encountered before the overall situation can be declared as having been fully experienced or truly spent."

Also in the same magazine, Alex Miller-Mignone writes, "To suggest that the Moon is somehow impaired while still forming its Crescent phase semisquare the Sun seems to be ludicrous."

And in a recent message about President Clinton's Inauguration (right here on our own festival list) Carole says, "The Moon is not, as it turns out, void-of-course. In the chart for the start of the oath of office at 12:05:15 EST, Washington DC, the Moon is in the second house at 28GE15. It makes a

Page 8: Void of the Course of the Moon

quincunx to Jupiter at 29CP47 in the 10th house." She does not say that, according to her definition, a quincunx counts....she just states her viewpoint as an absolute fact.

The Current Landscape

I've done a lot of polling among astrologers on this subject. Some stick to the traditional view, and say that their own experiences back this up. Some modify this definition by including only two other aspects, the semi-sextile and the inconjunct (quincunx), believing that all aspects involving multiples of thirty degrees should be considered...and they also say that their personal observations back them up. There are some who add the semi-square and sesquiquadrate also, but draw the line there. And finally, we have the astrologers who include all of the quintile family and the septile family in their defintion. (I have yet to find an astrologer who will include such aspects as the Nonagen (40 degrees) or the Johndro aspect (165 degrees), but perhaps some of our readers will volunteer that they do.)

Everyone can't be correct....either the quincunx keeps the Moon from being Void, or it doesn't; either the Moon's influence changes when after the last Ptolemaic aspect even if there is still a semi-square, or the Void doesn't begin until that aspect has passed as well. And either the Moon is Void when it makes no further aspects to the Sun and planets but still aspects Ceres, or else Ceres saves it from being Void too. What is the truth?

Some Premininary Suggestions

I don't have an absolute answer, although I sure wish I did. Certainly, I have my own theory, which I will close this article with. But first, I would like to make two suggestions:

1. When teaching students about the Void Of Course Moon, or writing on the subject, would astrologers please, PLEASE teach the traditional definition. If they also want to include their own view, or the view of their favorite teacher or writer, that is fine.....but then distinguish between them? I am not asking you that you abandon your definition...just don't teach it as the traditional or only one, please?

2. If you teach or write about a non-traditional definition for the Void Of Course Moon, it would help immensely if you include clear examples of exactly how the minor aspect saved the Moon from being Void...or how the square to Chiron kept it from being Void. If you can show us your reasoning, perhaps we will be convinced.

Some Lines of Thought

OK, now for my views on the subject. Many of you know that Al H. Morrison was not only my mentor, but my friend, and so his work on this topic greatly influenced my thinking...I can't deny that.

I see the Moon as being polar opposite of Saturn, as Cancer is opposite Capricorn. Since this is the case, they work as a team.....and in order to understand one, you need to comprehend them both. For example, the Moon's cycle of 28 days parallels Saturn's cycle of 28 years....and the progressed Moon cycle IS 28 years.

Saturn rules structures, limits, and order. It is safe, secure, reliable.....and while not exactly the most exciting, it helps to enhance our survival in the world by giving us walls to keep the 'bad' stuff out....and to keep us in our 'cribs' until we are mature enough not to need the walls anymore.

The Moon rules cycles, day-to-day needs/hungers, routines. While it, too, is not in itself exciting, it also helps to enhance our survival by providing us with food, and teaching us habits that we can rely on, integrate into our psyche, and then do without thinking (such as 'look both ways before you cross the street.')

Page 9: Void of the Course of the Moon

The Moon's major aspects.....the conjunction, sextile, and the other Ptolemaic ones.....are represetative of the major signposts/landmarks along its monthly journey. Each is a clearly marked out event, helping to define the structure of that lunar cycle. As such, each major aspect can be said to be to some extent Saturnian, in that it gives definition to that moment in time. (Yes, even the trine, because it is a clear, easily distinguishable marker.) I see these aspects as the 'box' containing the package known as the current moon cycle.

When the Moon makes a semi-sextile, or quincunx, the influences are much more subtle. Gregg said that himself. They are harder to see, more difficult to put your finger on, and as such are not clear definers of that lunar cycle. Perhaps these aspects are the packing in the box that keeps the contents from rattling? (LOL) But seriously, they are transition aspects, but not clear lines of demarcation. And the other aspects....quintile, bi-septile....are even more subtle. All these aspects are very real...and their influence does appear around us after the Moon goes Void...but they are not the ones that shape and mold our day to day existence. When the Moon goes Void, events go off in unplanned directions, and the minor aspects are there to add some color, some flavor, while on the way.

When the Moon aspects the Sun, or a planet from Mercury out through Saturn, this is a clear marker as well. These bodies also help define the cycle's meaning, being potent points of power that. At first I thought that Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto....all being beyond Saturn...shouldn't save the Moon from being void. But my experience has shown that they do...that a major aspect to one keeps the Moon from being Void. My only explanation is that perhaps, while they are beyond Saturn themselves, they are nevertheless major steps on a journey, and so even their aspects have a Saturn nature. More on those three in a minute.

Ceres and Juno are worthwhile bodies to study in a chart....but they are finely focused influences. Like the type of siding used on a house, which adds to the value and utility of the structure, but is definitely not the walls, ceiling or floor, the smaller bodies add details to the particular cycle, but do not serve to define the nature of it. Even Chiron, which has shown itself to be a powerful force for balance and healing, is not one of the bodies that contributes to the cycle's structure. (Perhaps it is because Chiron is a comet, not a planet, and focuses more on a process rather than an event, that it does not nullify the Void of Course Moon.)

I have a vision of the Moon, while making Ptolemaic aspects, as a kind of a clock, ticking away, measuring, working within the structure the aspects create. After the last of these aspects, I perceive the rest of the Moon's path while in that sign as outside of Saturn.....outside of routine, outside of the predictable, beyond controllable...where time seems bent into all kinds of odd shapes.

In fact, the Void time seems to be ruled by Uranus, Neptune and Pluto....check out the way things go off into uncharted directions during the next Void period. I'm not sure I understand how a Moon square Uranus keeps the Moon from being Void, yet the Void time feels in part like Uranus is in control of the moment. Perhaps it is the aspect itself which keeps Uranus-on-out in check, keeping events somewhat under control.

Well, that's my two cents......just a personal theory.....not claiming I've discovered the absolute truth!

You know, I didn't even check to see if I started writing this during a VOC Moon. Some astrologer I am!
