Western Band AssociationClassifications - There are five classes of bands in WBA field competition. Classification of each band is based on the TOTAL number of performers (drum majors, musicians and auxiliary) as follows: Class A - no more than 60 members; Class AA - no more than 80 members; Class AAA - no more than 100 members; Class AAAA - no more than 140 members; Class AAAAA - any number of members.
The primary goal is to support development of the highest quality in music performance and visual design regardless of size. However, there are unique circumstances under which the smaller band must function. This system is based on an understanding of the impacting circumstances which influence the size and development of the band programs within these 2 levels of development. It is intended to be realistic in the expectations and in the rewards for groups in this situation. All bands in every class will be measured against the “paradigm” for that class. The “paradigm” will be that band who achieves the highest standard. Judges will call upon their experience and their exposure to all bands within each class size.

Welcome to Valley Christian’s Eighth Annual Quest Classic!
We are pleased to once again host this field show competition for the Western Band Association, and to have you as our guests. This year we are happy to return to newly-renovated Chabot College, and we wish to thank their administration and staff for sharing their wonderful facility with us today.
The competitive high school marching band activity not only demands hours of work and the best effort from our students and staff, but from the parents and boosters as well. Today as each unit takes the field in competition, it will be apparent that countless hours and sacrifice have gone into the performance. Without the strong support of parent boosters working behind the scenes, band programs, such as those represented here today, would not flourish. On behalf of all the band directors here, we salute you!
We also need to express our appreciation to many other VCHS alumni, staff, and administration who are involved behind the scenes and supportive of this Quest. And, as always, we give thanks to God for directing our Quest for Excellence.
To all the band students and their directors, have a great show!
Best regards!
Troy Gunter Jeff WilsonValley Christian High School Open Air Ensemble Directors
Welcome to the Valley Christian High School
Field Show CompetitionOn behalf of the Valley Christian Schools community, I want to extend a warm welcome to the eighth annual Valley Christian Quest Classic Band and Color Guard Field Show Competition.
As I leave the campus in the evenings, one of my favorite fall traditions is listening to the sounds of music coming from our football stadium as our band rehearses to the rhythmic sound of the drum line. The autumn marching band tradition is one that is enjoyed by millions of people all across America. A side aspect of that tradition, not readily noticed by as many people, is the hours of planning, practice, dedication, and heartfelt love that goes into each performance. Marching band and color guard competitions nurture an atmosphere where the team affirms and trusts the strengths of each member, and builds success on team strengths. The skills and values learned from the collaborative nature of the competitions are so vital to the overall education of student musicians.
Special thanks are due to Mr. Troy Gunter, Mr. Jeff Wilson, and their staff for their hours of effort behind the scenes to host today’s band and color guard units.
We hope you enjoy the day and the stellar student performances.
Sincerely,
Clifford Daugherty, Ed.D.President

VCHS Senior ReflectionsDavid AhmannDrumlineSome people may ask why I do marching band. For almost a full semester, I give up most of my Thursdays and Saturdays. During these days, I march around a football field for hours, sometimes in the blazing heat. I also sacrifice some Tuesday nights when I would usually have youth group, which is very special to me. So the question comes up again: Why have I done marching band for four years? The answer is actually quite simple: I do it for the people. Marching band has reinforced my opinion that people are awesome. People are insightful, emotional, quirky, funny, unique, complex, and beautiful. Through people, God changes the world, and this gives me hope. I love people, and I know that they will continue to have a positive influence on me, and I hope that God will help me to positively impact their lives.
Brandon BenzTrombone, Section LeaderI didn’t put too much thought into joining band freshman year. I wasn’t sure what it was, but Mr. Rubino told me that they did fun things like travel to Cambodia, so I decided to join. It was kinda strange to me, but I made a lot of new friends so I stuck with it. Today, I look back on that decision and am so glad that I chose correctly. Sure, the cost is giving up every Saturday during band season, but the benefit of being with you guys definitely makes it worth it. Thank you all so much for the best four years of my life.
Wicia FangDrum Major, FluteGiving up my Saturdays, working hard under the hot sun, getting home late from rehearsals - this is what I have done for the past four years, and I do not regret it one bit. Marching band has played such a huge role in my high school career and has made me a better person. It pushed me past what I thought were my limits and taught me skills beyond playing an instrument and making shapes on a field. Band has become my home and where I am most myself. The people have become my second family and have seen me laugh, cry, and in my pajamas. I am so grateful to the band staff, parents, and members for supporting me, helping me grow, and being by my side as I figure out God’s plan for me. I love and will miss you all. Thank you for everything.
Jordan GutierrezClarinet, Woodwind CaptainI started playing music when I was really young. I learned to play the piano when I was 4 years old and then when I went into 4th grade I started playing clarinet. I was in 7th grade when I first saw a marching band field show called From the Ashes, in which my cousin Kelvin played the trombone. Kelvin was really the one who convinced me to join marching band. However, he did not prepare me for the intense practices. Even though the practice and the time commitment were hard, I experienced some of the best moments and made some of my best friends through it. So even though marching was difficult, I wouldn’t trade it for anything because of all the awesome experiences and friends I have made.
Sabrina HamadaColor GuardI’ve had five wonderful years with my band family and I don’t think my high school could get any better. I started color guard way back in 7th grade and somehow magically fell in love with the sport. I actually loved it so much I joined the high school marching band in 8th grade with one of my best friends. Best decision of my life. Period. Now I can’t believe I’m already a senior! How time flies. This activity (or sport as I call it) has given me such wonderful memories, I just can’t wait to make my last year the best year! And to all my cute underclassmen! I hope you all fall in love with this sport like I did! Performing will be the best and coolest thing you could ever do!
Amy HansenColor Guard CaptainMy interest for color guard began in 6th grade, when I choose color guard as a class. I knew nothing about the class other than it sounded interesting. I joined the junior high color guard club 7th grade year, and by 8th grade year, I was part of the high school color guard. Being an 8th grader among high schoolers was scary, but everyone was welcoming and very supportive. When my first season ended, I enjoyed the activity so much; I could hardly wait for the next season to begin. As I reflect on the years gone by, I can’t imagine my four years of high school without marching band/guard. Marching band is my second family and, I just wanted to give a ginormous THANK YOU shout out to Mr. Gunter, Mr. Wilson, Mrs. Wiens, my parents and the Band Boosters. I look forward to having a good 5th and final field season. OAE Warrior pride!!
VCHS Senior ReflectionsNicholas HeliotisTuba, Section LeaderIt seems like only months ago when I picked up a large, and at the time heavy, piece of metal, known as the tuba, and started marching and making music with it. I thought I had gotten in over my head with all of the practices and such a busy schedule. I had wanted out so badly my first Saturday practice but here I am four years later. Looking back, sticking with marching band is probably one the best decisions I’ve ever made in my high school years. Over the years, friends have become family and practices have become a time to be with that family and make music together. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year goes. And to all the freshman, Good Luck and enjoy these four years!

Carolyn LindemulderClarinetI wasn’t really sure what to expect on my 14th birthday. It was the first day of band camp and it was a 9-9. I had never seen a marching band before, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Fast forward to my 17th birthday. Now, I’m disappointed that I can’t have band camp on my birthday like every other year. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I can’t wait to do one more season. I’ve had the opportunity to go places that I never would have gone and met people that I never would have met. I can’t even begin to explain how marching band has changed my life and I’m so grateful for all the support that kept me going.
Brian LiuClarinetMarching band wasn’t exactly in my list of high school plans. I left middle school knowing no instruments but piano, thinking I would join an afterschool program like robotics (I shudder at the thought of it now!) But I wanted to learn a new instrument, and there was a marching band option in the interest checklist. So I marked it. A few weeks later, I was learning clarinet at Valley, still not so sure about my decision. Four years later, I view it as one of the best decisions I’ve made in high school. Thank you to the band family for making it such an amazing time, even if it meant freez—ahem, bonding with you all in Gonzales! Have fun!
Matthew LundyDrum Major, SaxophoneI’ve done a lot of activities over the years - soccer, football, track and field, Boy Scouts, the list goes on. But none of them ever gave me the family like I found in marching band. I’ve lost friends each year with seniors leaving, and I’ve gained friends with each new class of freshmen. There’s something in the hard work of repping sets every Thursday and Saturday, sleeping in the gym at Gonzales, standing together in performances, and taking the late night buses back to school that transcends our grade gap and bonds all of us, freshman to senior. I’ll miss this activity and the friends I’ve made here, but I’ll never forget it. I don’t think I’ll ever have such a large, loving family like the one I’ve found in this band and I’m really grateful that I got to have it. I can’t thank Mr. Gunter, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Ryan enough for what they’ve taught me, and I pray good luck to every student that is going to get the chance to experience this great activity and be part of this family, just like I did.
Christina Meehan-VernonColor GuardI love marching band because it’s more than a sport; as cheesy as it sounds, it’s a lifestyle. It means giving everything you have, even when you think you have nothing left. It’s leaving everything on the field, despite the score. Marching band isn’t a team, or even a group of people brought together because they have the same interests; marching band is a family. And it’s with that family that I’ve become the person I am today.

VCHS Senior ReflectionsNoelle MindolovichClarinet, Section LeaderBack in 4th grade I chose to play the clarinet because, well, I wanted to be with my friends. They quit after elementary school but I ended up loving it and played all through junior high. Then I joined the marching band, even though I had never actually seen them perform. Not once. Needless to say, it is probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Because even though it consumes our lives for a long four months, it’s all worth it when everything comes together for the first time. From the memories to the friends to everything else, I will remember these years for the rest of my life - it made high school pretty awesome. I’m so glad that I chose to join marching band, and I am so thankful for the experience.
Austin QuonTuba, Brass CaptainI never planned or even thought about doing marching band. I still remember getting home from a week-long summer camp and then hearing that I had sectionals coming up and thinking “what is a sectional?” However, marching band has become the best mistake I have made in my entire high school career. My high school could not have been complete without becoming a part of the band family. I have had a great time getting to know everyone in band and I will miss them all next year.
Ethan SaxeTromboneWhen my junior year came around, I finally was able to join the marching band. It took me a while to understand how to march and it was very difficult for me at first, but by the end of the season it had become one of the best experiences I’ve had in high school. So far, my senior year has built on this and I am enjoying my final season of OAE.
Jessica SnyderPit PercussionI transferred into Valley sophomore year and also started band sophomore year. I met my best friend in band and my life was forever changed. It was a happy time filled with food trucks and barefootedness. We increased our cards skills together and we will forever be really good at Egyptian War. So thank you, band, for the many free dinners that weren’t actually free because we paid for them in blood sweat and tears, even pit. We marched in a lot of parades and it was awful and awfully fulfilling. We developed good arm muscles but then we lost them, but that’s okay because we gained love and stuff. Pit, I love you and bottomless peach pit 4 eva. – Jessica
Logan WeislakDrumlineI started playing drums when I was in sixth grade. Playing drums in Mr. Sankus’s junior high classes was very fun, and that, along with taking drum lessons from Kirk Berkland, led me to playing bass drum in the marching band my freshman year. Meeting new people was awesome, and traveling around and seeing other schools’ marching bands was a cool experience. In sophomore year, I started playing snare drum, and that is what I have played since. Playing drums in the marching band has led to me becoming a better drummer, whether it be rudimental or on the drum set. I have met a lot of cool people, and the trips around the country and the world have made all the hard work pay off in the end.
