The Voice of Chaim ▪ May 2017

One of the more peculiar customs that takes place on Israel’s Independence Day each May is called being patished. In Hebrew, a patish typically translates to a regular, workaday hammer. However, on Yom Haatzmaut, being patished refers to the acts of little Israeli children who spend the holiday running up to complete strangers, and “patishing” them with large inflatable hammers over the head.

What does being patished have to do with Israeli Independence? As silly a custom as this appears to be (you won’t find this minhag anywhere in the Talmud), I believe that at least symbolically, it speaks to the way that Yom Haatzmaut “hits us over the head” and challenges us to strengthen our love for Israel. At each phase of our lives, we connect to Israel differently. As a child, my love affair with Israel began with Shalom Sesame videos and magic paper airplanes to Israel. That sense of wonder for Israel continued when I would travel on an actual airplane to Israel for the first time with my family, and when I would spend nearly a year of my life living and studying in Jerusalem. It deepened as I served as a delegate to the World Zionist Congress, and as I became a Vice President for MERCAZ, the Conservative movement’s Zionist Organization in America. Since coming to Etz Chaim, I continue to affirm my commitment regularly by purchasing Israel Bonds, as I did through my attendance at my first AIPAC policy conference in Washington.

In recent years, I must confess that my relationship with Israel at times feels more complex. Dr. Alex Sinclair, a renowned Israel educator, refers to this as the shift as moving from beyond the “hugging” to the “wrestling.” Today, I wrestle with the fact that despite having officiated a wedding in Israel, that I continue not to be recognized as a rabbi by its government. Each month that I attend our Rosh Chodesh minyan in solidarity with the Women of the Wall, I cringe as I wait to hear a report from our Sisterhood about the acts of hooliganism that have taken place at the wall that morning.

Yet despite these complexities, when May rolls around each year, I nearly inevitably find myself “patished.” You don’t have to be hit over the head to know that Israel is on the cutting edge of “High Tech” and that she saves countless lives by building field hospitals after natural disasters. We should be proud that the world’s only Jewish State uses solar technology to improve the lives of isolated African villages and that her desalinization technologies are ending droughts in California.

Each May, even without the friendly reminder of an inflatable hammer, I fall in love with the miracle of Israel all over again. She truly is “the beginning of the dawn of our ultimate redemption” of our world.

Rabbi Daniel Dorsch

From Rabbi Lewis

This month, Israel celebrates her 69th birthday and is in remarkably good health. By nearly every standard, Israel is in an astonishing place, considering that only thirty-six months before her birth one third of our people were annihilated.

As we ruminate our miraculous ascension to nation state, in the horrific, debilitating aftermath of the Shoah, we are pridefully speechless. As we crawled, bloodied and broken from Auschwitz, we cried out 'Never Again' and built a Jewish homeland that is the envy of any honest, upright soul. The only authentic democracy in the Middle East. The only country in the region with a free press. With religious freedom for all faith communities. An out of the closet LGBTQ community with annual, multiple parades. A place women can become head of state and drive a tank. A governing body with an empowered fifth column of infidels. A nation besieged and beleaguered, yet ranked the 11th happiest country in the world by the United Nations. And beyond the social tolerance, there is the compassion displayed for Syrian refugees and even enemies of the state. For Mother Nature’s victims around the world. For all who are ailing who stumble into hospitals. Compassion and empathy throb mightily in the heart of Israel. And if this decency wasn't enough, we bear witness to a staggering resurrection of a pummeled diaspora people who in boggling haste built skyscrapers. A world class economy. A moral, powerful military.

Overcoming towering, relentless obstacles, Israel is the unparalleled exemplar of a righteous, dynamic, modern state. And yet, Israel is the most vilified country on earth. Her 'malevolence', claim the morally obtuse, worse than North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, China, Syria, Cuba, Russia, Yemen and a vast cast of players that are authentically revolting. A state, made a pariah, by unjust accusations of evil that should embarrass the disparagers. The criticism of Israel has sadly ventured into the realm of pathology and anti-Semitism. The terms tossed out with such unprincipled flippance. Apartheid. Occupier. Ethnic cleanser. The need to defend her right to exist. The prohibition of assigning a capital city. The sickening BDS assault. Boycott. Divest. Sanctions is raw Jew hatred masquerading cynically and impiously as the pursuit of human rights. The perversity and hypocrisy of Israel's enemies is monstrous and sickening. That they come from places of presumed respectability is dispiriting. The E.U. The U.N. Academia. Unions. Business. Politicians and folks on the hard Left. Liberal churches. Assorted ethnic communities. Even clueless, useful Jewish idiots. ‘Have you no shame?’ we ask, and they don't. All claim the moral high ground, ignoring history, facts and reason. It is exhausting dealing with such rageful, self-inflated egos, but such is Israel's fate.

We pay a price for being a timeless people and a 'light unto the nations' though many try to extinguish us and distort our message by pivoting to Zionism. There are no round ups, cattle cars, and crematoria today, but make no mistake, the present abuse of Israel is no less threatening and perilous to our destiny. It comes from a dark place and is not the pursuit of benevolence. It is sinister hatred wrapped in phony rectitude.

And so, to Israel, as she celebrates her 69th birthday, I cry out 'Am Yisrael Chai' and 'Yom Huledet Samayach'. Let us pray for a world of sanity and virtue but until those days arrive, Israel stay strong and remain just. In 1945 we were silent. Three years later we sang Hatikva. Rabbi Shalom Lewis

The school year may be ending this month but we still have excellent programs in May and June.

Mark your calendars for Tikkun Leil Shavuot on Tuesday, May 30! It will be a hoot! The theme is the 11th commandment “Though Shalt Laugh.” We will begin with a short service and enjoy yummy dairy treats. We will then go into our learning sessions that include the topics: From Sedra to Seinfeld Part I & Part II and Open Mic Night, where you get to be part of the entertainment by sharing your favorite Jewish joke. The learning sessions will look at the funny and satiric parts in our very own Jewish texts, Jewish comedians of the Borscht Belt, the one and only Woody Allen and more. Laugh the night away with us - you do not want to miss this! Please RSVP online at etzchaim.net/tikkunleilshavuot and find more info on page 19.

“Take me Out to the Ball Game!” Etz Chaim will be going to a Braves Game at the new SunTrust Park on Sunday, June 11, at 1:35 pm. This is a great multigenerational event! Let’s cheer on the Braves in their new home as they take on the New York Mets and enjoy this fun summer outing with your Etz Chaim family. Men’s Club will be co-sponsoring this event. Open to all! Tickets are $18 each. We are exploring a bus transportation option since it will be fun to travel together and parking ranges from $10-21. We will keep you posted. Please buy your tickets online at www.etzchaim.net/braves and find more info on page 19.

Have you heard about our new program initiative “Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas?” It is a program that partners congregants with one another for Shabbat dinners in each other’s homes. Our goal is to have every congregant invited to someone’s home for a Shabbat dinner. We launched this in February and heard so much praise from the participants - there were many great connections made! We are having a summer Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas on Friday, June 16. If this date does not work, please contact me or [email protected] about alternative dates.

This program engages people and families of all ages. We want more of us to get to know each other outside the walls of the synagogue. Of course, coming to synagogue together is great too, and on Saturday, June 17, hosts and guests will be recognized in Shabbat services. So, don’t be shy. Let us know if you can host or you would like to be hosted. Shabbat dinner can be formal or informal—whatever you prefer; the important part is being together for Shabbat dinner.

Go to www.etzchaim.net/ecguesswho to sign up to be a host or guest. For more information, contact [email protected] or me at the Etz Chaim office.

Between an evening of laughter, a fun Braves Game outing, enjoying the beauty of a Shabbat dinner together with fellow congregants, there are great program opportunities for you.

L’shalom,

Heather Blake

The Voice of Chaim ▪ May 2017

An old photograph. A family heirloom. A favorite song that has become an ear worm. A memory of days gone by. We reminisce about the past because of its familial comforts. The past is certain.

I recently marked 25 years since my Bar Mitzvah. Two and a half decades ago on a spring day at a Conservative shul in suburban Philadelphia. With the exception of the first few verses of my lengthy Maftir, I do not remember much about the day, but the album my parents display on their living room coffee table helps to jog the memories. There were all four of my grandparents, my younger brother who stole the show as he gave a four-fingered, Richard Nixon-like salute upon being lifted in the chair, and my friends at the time, many of whom populate my daily Facebook feed even if our actual contact with each other is now minimal. There was my childhood rabbi, the candle lighting ceremony, the horah, the teal t-shirts given out to all of the children, the awkward early teen boy-girl interactions.

The trip down memory lane prompted thoughts of impactful Jewish experiences. As you know, our exceptional congregation is in the business of creating these meaningful Jewish experiences. These experiences might be life cycle events, like a baby naming of a newborn girl of a young couple that recently joined or the Bar Mitzvah of the youngest child of the family. They may be educational in nature, like the siddur ceremony for a third grader or a stimulating Lilmode lecture for a retiree. Or these experiences could be a raucous chocolate Seder for parents who just want to have fun or an outing at the Painted Pin for a young professional looking to engage with other Jews. They may even coincide with Shabbat or a holiday, like Blue Jean Shabbat in the Sukkah or a Lag B'Omer picnic.

As we approach the summer vacation season and wind down our Jewish year, one wonders what meaningful experiences of the past year will stay with us in the years to come. Elections, weather events, job changes, and exotic vacations will surely leave lasting imprints. But what Congregation Etz Chaim memories of the past year engaged you in meaningful ways? Was it your first personal encounter with Rabbi Dorsch? Doing crafts with Amy Dorsch and the women of Zahava? The fascinating lecture led by renowned Holocaust educator Brendan Murphy? Rabbi Lewis' moving passing of the torch to Rabbi Dorsch on the first day of Rosh Hashanah? Both Rabbis' futile belly dancing attempts on Purim? Committing yourself to educate others about the serious problem of sex trafficking in our community after attending the important program on the topic hosted by our congregation? Celebrating the first night of Chanukah (and December 25) with your Etz Chaim family? Planting a daffodil bulb with the seventh graders in our new garden to honor the children whose lives were taken during the Holocaust? Drinking fine scotch and eating a ribeye with your fellow Men's Club members? Cooking and serving a meal at the Shearith Israel Women's Shelter? Attending morning minyan on Rosh Hodesh in solidarity with Women of the Wall? Staying up all night at a lock-in with your Sababa USY best friends?

It has been another engaging year for our exceptional congregation. The meaningful Jewish experiences that we have offered will be lingering memories for years to come. Like the Bar Mitzvah album, that which we have accomplished is comforting. Our future, though, remains bright.

Until next time.

Bereavement Services Offered to Congregants

Etz Chaim’s Chesed Committee Will offer to provide meals of consolation to members. This meal is traditionally a dairy meal eaten by mourners Upon their return home from the funeral. It includes whole hard-boiled eggs, symbolizing the continuity of life. This service provided by the Chesed Committee allows the family and friends who normally provide the meal to attend the funeral them-selves and give the emotional support to the bereaved. Members attending out of town funerals, who sit shiva or hold a memorial Service in Atlanta, will be offered a fruit tray.

Contributions made to the Chesed Fund will help to fund these services.
