OPENING REMARKS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Bill Bevier, 68th President

Welcome! What a great start to the New Year. We had our Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday evening. I appreciate

everyone’s attendance and their support, lively discussions, and humor, ideas, etc. Even though I forgot the beer. It was a cold and rainy evening—better off at home safe and dry and still they were there to support Rotary. It is these acts that make me proud to be

the 68th President of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento.

It is my pleasure to announce that our club has the highest number of new members that any other club in

the District. Man, we really know how to Rotary up!

Bill’s Box

The Ney Year is starting off with a bang!!! Ted Smith gave a great presentation on the history of Clarksburg. It appears he just touched on it; the names and places were familiar even to us that do not live in the village. Need to once again thank Troy Bird and Dan Ramos for arranging our speakers. Anyone with a recommendation for an interesting speaker should contact Troy or Dan. As noted at the meeting and in the newsletter, we discussed many items at the January Board of Director's meeting. The River Dice Tournament and the Spring Fundraiser Dinner will be very important to our budgeting for the remainder of the year and the start-up of next year. Tim Carnahan and Wayne Enke have the River Dice Tournament under control. Purchase tickets, attend, and have fun! Chris Bradford and Jim Cahill have volunteered initially to get the ball rolling of the Spring Fundraiser Dinner, but we are looking for one person to chair the event. Paul Kolarik has nine volunteers signed up for our International House Building trip to Tijuana. Great work Paul. The Rotary Club of West Sacramento’s 68th Anniversary Dinner is scheduled for Thursday evening, February 23rd. Please plan on attending. Remember, we will be dark for the regular club meeting the following Friday. See you this Friday, Roary up! Bill

We had our January Board meeting on Wednesday evening January 4th. We had a lot to discuss so the following is a brief synopsis of the meeting:

1.The River Dice Tournament is coming up on Wednesday, Janu-ary 25th at Club Pheasant. 2. The Club’s Anniversary Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, Febru-ary 23rd. The club will go Dark the following day, Friday, Febru-ary 24th. 3. The Speech Contest will be Fri-day, March 3rd. The contest will serve as our program for that week’s gathering. 4. The club’s fundraiser Steak Dinner will be held on April 27th. 5. The Clarksburg Scout Program will provide a meeting program on January 20th and is asking for financial support for their “Big Trip” this summer. I hear bells ringing for Clarksburg residents as well as a pass-the-hat for our members. 6.The club is searching for a re-placement adviser for the Inter-act Club. Hopefully, a replace-ment can be found soon so they can work with Dr. Charyl Silva for the remainder of the year to shadow and assist with the In-teractors. 7. Shaun Morrow is setting up a benefit Super Bowl pool the 17th—21st. 8. Editor Amanda Bailey is look-ing for volunteers to sign up to take speaker notes at various gatherings. Any members willing to help either need to contact Bill Bevier or Amanda Bailey.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or any board/committee member.

BILL BEVIER’S MOVIE HORSE TRIVIA 1/6/17

(weekly winners are awarded a Rotary Coin)

Question: In the 1985 movie Ladyhawk , Ladyhawk had a beautiful black horse. What is the breed?

Answer: Fr iesian. This breed is commonly used in motion pictures. It’s popularity comes from the powerful and commanding prescience of the breed.

The winner was Lee Harris. She recited the 4-Way test.

Rotary International Tidbits

Zulu State of Mind

What comes to mind when you think of the Zulu tribe of South Africa? Spears? Loincloths? It's a beautiful, but very poor area outside Durban, on the southeast coast of Africa. There's not much local work and unem-ployment in the country is 27%, so many people have to travel for jobs. But that means paying for taxis or buses, which can be expensive.

So, for the past three years, the Rotary Club of (nearby) Hillcrest, along with Clubs from Winnipeg, Canada, and Royston, England, partnered with local non-profit, Embocraft, to teach classes in sewing, computers, textiles, welding and woodwork. Em-bocraft teaches craft skills in the region and sells its students' work in its store.

The Rotarians have also invested in up-grading the local community center, while the Zulu community has found a new source of income and pride in its work
