Have you ever thought it strange that there is one day in the year – 1st April or as it is often called, April Fool’s Day – when people are actually encouraged to play jokes on each other? In fact, this custom is so common that we often spend the whole day just waiting for someone to trick us! 1

Tricking people is certainly an unusual holiday custom. How did it come about? One popular theory has to do with the calendar. 2 Then, in 1582 the Pope decided to introduce a new calendar. This calendar established 1st

January as the beginning of the year. But in those days news didn’t travel fast. There was no

television, radio or newspapers, so people learned about the Pope’s decision at different times.

As time went by, an increasing number of people in Europe began using the revised calendar. 3 Eventually, those who still celebrated New Year’s on 1st April were thought to be backward or foolish. People would ridicule them and even found it amusing to play practical jokes on them when 1st April came along. This custom of playing pranks

was so popular that it soon became widespread. Nowadays, April Fool’s Day is celebrated in countries all over the world, from America to Japan.

April Fool’s Day pranks come in all shapes and sizes. Some jokes are simple – like fooling a friend into believing that he has a cockroach on his back and watching him jump up and down to shake off the insect. Others are far more sophisticated. For instance, does the idea of phoning a friend and disguising your voice as Matt Damon or Angelina Jolie appeal to you? No problem. 4 They’ve invented special equipment that transforms your voice over the telephone to sound like the celebrity of your choice. But you had better hope that your friend has a sense of humour when he finds out that you were pulling his leg!

5 On 1st April, 1957, a BBC programme about different world cultures showed women picking spaghetti off trees with the explanation that this was a typical spaghetti harvest scene. Thousands of viewers were convinced that spaghetti grew on trees! Luckily most of them laughed when they found out they had been taken in by a hoax!

Incredibly, even the person who is the butt of the joke doesn’t seem to mind. On the contrary, people actually look forward to April Fool’s Day. 6 You don’t have to spend days looking for the perfect gift. There are no huge family dinners where you must be friendly to relatives you haven’t seen for years. Instead, April Fool’s Day lets us see the funny side of life – even if it’s at our own expense!
