-Traditional leak detection using sniffers can be harmful to inspectors due to their proximity to potential gas emitions.- With snifers, leak detection is limited to one spot. Big equipments require a number of inspection spots in relation with their size thus increasing the inspection time and its cost.- Inspection is limited to inspector vecinity. In United States, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) makes mandatory the use « Methode 21 » for on site LDAR(Leaks Detection And Repair) programs. In this procedure the use of a thermal imaging camera is allowed as an « alternative work methode ».
European CONCAWE association also agreed the thermal imaging camera is an acceptable alternative to COV meters or snifers.
