Modern Data Protection for the VMware Branch Office Desktop Overview VMware ® View enables desktops to be delivered from a central location, providing a consistent and reliable desktop experience for users located in remote and branch office environments. This approach to highly centralized desktop deployments allows organizations to streamline operations and utilize resources more efficiently. This approach also makes streamlined data-protection operations more critical than ever before. Protecting a disperse range of desktop images and profile data that is accessed across many departments and geographies can introduce new challenges to ensure end users have access to their data where and when they need it. CommVault’s Simpana 9 software is the industry leader in meeting the unique challenges of protecting a virtual environment, include VMware branch office deployments. The Race to Desktop Recovery The rapid expansion of virtual desktop initiatives, like VMware Branch Office Desktops, is placing more pressure on IT to deliver faster and more streamlined end-user services— particularly data access and, when needed, recovery. In the past, IT departments have struggled with limited tools for desktop recoveries resulting in cumbersome, manual processes for assisting end users with desktop data restores. As result, most IT departments tend toward a “you’re on your own” policy for desktop restores, leaving everyone frustrated with manual ad-hoc processes. Solution The combination of CommVault Simpana software and VMware Branch Office Desktop solutions enables streamlined and centralized end-user data access and recovery. Rapid recovery capabilities for stateless or stateful View deployments are now available to fully automate the process for recovering the entire BOD deployment, restoring individual user profiles and data, or enabling secure end-user access to data. CommVault Simpana software rapidly protects Branch Office Desktops with minimal impact on the production environment. This includes direct integration with leading storage providers to leverage their native hardware snapshot capabilities for an additional layer of recovery. Recovery of a single file, virtual desktop, or the entire environment can be rapidly performed at the BOD or central datacenter. Key features of the Simpana solution for Branch Office Desktops include: • Rapid recovery of Branch Office Desktop (BOD) and User Profiles – The Branch Office Desktop can be recovered at the branch site or central datacenter. This includes automated recovery of user profile data • Embedded deduplication reduces network traffic by up to 90 percent, and the full backup window by almost 50 percent • Auto-discovery affords automated data protection for new virtual machines based on pre-defined policies, ensuring no newly created virtual desktops or management servers are left unprotected • Secure end user access to data anywhere, anytime, from any device Key Benefits Solution Brief

The simplified network diagram below represents a typical VMware BOD deployment using CommVault Simpana to protect the View management servers, user data, and gold images at the branch office location.

The primary components consist of the CommServe (CS), MediaAgent (MA), and Virtual Server Agent (VSA).

The CommServe coordinates all activity and controls the protection jobs running at the BOD and central datacenter. The Virtual Server Agent / MediaAgent protect all management virtual machines and user data at the hypervisor level for fast, low-impact backups. The Deduplication Accelerated Streaming Hash (DASH) copy replicates the backup data from the BOD to the central datacenter to provide additional recovery options.
