The  Proposal

u  Plan  is  to  create  a  series  of  fine  art  images  relating  to  food.

u  Make  everyday  foods  such  as  fruit,  vegetables,  breads,  pastries  etc  into  something  that  will  stand  out  and  be  visually  appealing.

u  Look  into  doing  some  commissions  or  placements  at  regional  pubs  and  restaurants.

u  Plan  to  put  the  best  photos  in  a  portfolio  file.

u  The  dissertation  will  ask  the  question  of  how  modern  technology  is  influencing  food  photography?

Portfolio  File

The  best  final  images  from  various  commissions  and  work  placements  will  go  into  an  A3  slipcase  portfolio  file.

I  used  Silverprint  for  the  Portfolio  Production  module  in  the  Foundation  Degree  and  I  was  pleased  with  the  quality  of  the  file  and  polyester  sleeves  that  went  with  the  same  purchase.  I  plan  to  use  the  same  online  photography  store  again  for  the  Development  phase  of  this  course.

Previous  Work  With  Food  Photography

Both  of  these  photos  are  examples  from  my  work  towards  the  Portfolio  Production  module.

I  added  a  border  to  all  fifteen  of  my  final  images  to  give  them  more  of  a  glossy  magazine  style  finish.

During  the  Work  Based  Learning  module  in  the  second  year,  me  and  another  student  carried  out  a  work  placement  at  the  Chef’s  Academy,  which  is  located  here  at  Newcastle  College.

Previous  Work  With  Food  Photography

Page 10: VIVA Presentation Daniel Jenks

We  were  asked  to  do  a  collaborative  project  with  the  students  and  it  required  us  to  provide  images  for  their  own  cookbooks.

Our  final  photos  were  a  mix  of  the  chefs  prepping  the  ingredients  for  dishes  and  finished  plates  for  presentation.

Previous  Work  With  Food  Photography

During  that  same  module  I  carried  out  a  separate  commission  for  the  independently  run  restaurant  named  The  Sausage  Emporium,  which  is  located  in  Newcastle  near  Central  Station.

With  the  help  of  another  student  on  the  course,  I  was  asked  to  shoot  images  for  their  new  menu.  The  photos  also  went  up  on  their  website.

Contacting  Food  Photographers

In  the  next  few  weeks  I  plan  to  get  in  touch  with  established  food  photographers  in  order  to  seek  out  any  tips  that  could  help  towards  my  own  practical  work.

I  will  e-‐mail  the  likes  of  Francesco  Tonelli,  Carl  Warner,  Benoit  Levac  and  Marcus  Nilsson  to  see  what  I  can  find  whilst  explaining  my  own  photographic  project.

Entering  Competitions

Another  plan  for  the  academic  year  is  to  enter  photo  competitions,  with  the  Pink  Lady  Food  Photographer  Of  The  Year  2016  included.

It  is  open  to  both  professional  and  amateur  photographers  and  it  highlights  the  very  best  talent  in  that  particular  genre.  Categories  include  Food  For  Celebration,  Bring  Home  The  Harvest  and  Food  For  The  Family.

Page 17: VIVA Presentation Daniel Jenks

The  competition  also  associates  with  the  International  Food  Photography  and  Film  Day,  which  takes  place  on  Thursday  12th  November.

The  day  celebrates  food  photography  and  film  in  a  way  that  you  can  share  using  popular  social  media.  Use  the  hashtag  #FeastSocial  on  Twitter,  Facebook  or  Instagram  to  have  a  chance  to  win  5  credits  to  enter  Pink  Lady  Food  Photographer  of  the  Year  2016.
