Classes, Courses & Workshops Spring/Summer 2014

We’ve a wide variety of arts workshops all taught by experienced arts

professionals and workshop leaders, suitable for different levels of

ability and offering different levels of support.

This year alongside our groups designed for people in recovery from

addiction and alcoholism we’re also running new groups open to

people who use mental health services.

If you’re interested in seeing your work onstage and fancy working

with us on a brand new community theatre show – written and per-

formed by you - then don’t miss out on getting involved as a writer or

performer or both!

We’re also working in partnership with lots of other fantastic arts

organisations and individuals to offer even more from our workshop

and theatre studio spaces at Vita Nova HQ,11 Roumelia Lane.

Vita Nova are here to support you, so if you feel you might need extra

support to attend a class, or perhaps you’re interested in some

volunteering experience or even maybe you’d like some help to apply

to return to education or employment, then we can offer help and

guidance to support you to achieve your

aspirations.

So what’s stopping you from trying something new this year?!

Give us a call, drop us a line or swing past the offices for more details

and to reserve your place.

We look forward to meeting you! The Vita Nova Team!

Welcome! Vita Nova has a packed term ahead to kick off Spring . . .

In September 2014, Vita Nova will be producing the second Boscombe Fringe Festival, an exciting showcase of workshops, shows, exhibitions and performances by local artists, community groups and invited guests held at Vita Nova and Shelley Theatre. Last year Vita Nova supported the development of two spoken word shows, a spoken word film, photography exhibition and a new theatre show alongside performances from other emerging artists in the area. This year we’re thinking even bigger! With support from the Arts Council we’ll be looking to you to help us create something really special for this year’s festival.

What will it involve? The early stages are all about getting to know you and supporting you to learn new skills. All we ask is that you attend one of our creative writing or/and theatre workshops to start to develop your interests and ideas. As we move through the year our experienced workshop leaders will start to support you in shaping and developing the ideas to lead to a piece ready for performance in September.

Boscombe Fringe Festival The Big 2014 Vita Nova Show!

Workshops starting from 24th February 2014

What to expect from the workshops

In the early stages workshops will focus on developing your skills as performers and/or writers. There will be lots of fun and laughter along the way, and activities inspired to help us starting thinking creatively, sharing ideas and finding our more about each other and the stories we might want to tell.

What if I don’t want to perform? You can still come along and benefit from being a part of the workshops without signing up to be a part of the final show. The arts are a fantastic way to be part of a group and work as a team, so even if you don’t feel that performing is for you, your ideas could still contribute to the final piece. There’s lots of other ways you could get involved too, without stepping on stage as we’ll need volunteers to help us with design, marketing, front of house, stage managers and technicians to help make sure everything goes without a hitch on the night!

What sort of show will it be? What we make will be based around your ideas... It could be a theatre show, a series of spoken word performances, maybe a comedy sketch show, or perhaps a promenade performance that takes the audience around Boscombe telling stories along the way.... Crucially we’re interested in hearing about the stories you’re interested in telling.

How can I get involved? The best place to start is for us all to get to know each other, so join a workshop and join in the fun!

workshops open to people who use mental health services

‘What does it mean to be well?’ Over the course of a year, participants will have the opportunity to work with practising artists across a number of disciplines. Workshops will explore and develop life-story work - through creative writing, visual art, design and mosaic- with a focus on empowering the creative voice. Participants will learn about the practicalities of ‘making art’ as they move through the process of turning ideas into objects. The group will then produce sections of mosaic which will come together to create a unique whole that reflects and reacts to their discoveries alongside other local community groups. The project will run for 1 term for the life story/creative writing work and 2 terms for the mosaic design and work with community groups. This will culminate in a celebration event and the opportunity for the finished mosaic to tour the local community.

‘SCRATCH Night’

This year we’ll be hosting three great evenings of spoken word by Vita Nova writers, with open mic slots available by submis-sion before the event. These evenings are FREE to attend and offer a space to hear

and share work in a alcohol free venue.

Arvon Foundation Writing Retreat Vita Nova are fortunate to have a fantastic relationship with the Arvon Foundation, who support writers through their residential writing programmes in beautiful rural locations across the country. This will be the third year we will be able to offer writers who show passion and promise an opportunity to come on a week long retreat receiv- ing workshops and mentoring from amazing professional writ-ers. This opportunity is open to Vita Nova writers in recov-ery, places for this are limited and if we receive greater levels of interest than places, participants will be se-lected by Vita Nova based on who best demonstrates the ability to benefit most from the opportunity.

Venue Hire Both our Theatre Studio and Writing Workshop spaces, are available to hire throughout the year for your community group or event. Rates vary dependent on the length of booking, duration and time of week you’d like to use the space. Priority will be given to groups working with people in re-covery and vulnerable adults. Please contact us for an informal chat about your needs and requirements.

Artist Residencies Are you a theatre company, actor, performance artist interested in developing work? We’re now taking applications from local artists who would benefit from studio time and even an outside eye from our in-house director and playwright. Flexible rates or skills swops are available, for example we could ask for you to offer your time back to us in a way which benefits some of the people we work with, such as offering to run a workshops, invite people on our theatre courses into your rehearsal process or stage the finished piece in our studio.
