PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

1986 to Present ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, Tempe, Arizona SALT RIVER PROJECT CHAIR PROFESSOR

The Salt River Project Chair was established for the improvement of Electrical Power Education. Dr. Karady built a new High Voltage and a Power Electronics Laboratory at ASU and headed the committee which reorganized the graduate program for Electrical Power. He developed new graduate courses: Power Electronics: Power Transmission and Distribution. He also introduced a senior level course on Electric Power Devices.

Dr. Karady's research work concentrates on Power Electronics, High Voltage Insulation Studies, Neural-network and Expert System Application for Power System Analysis. His major contribution is a novel theory for the flashover mechanism of contaminated silicon rubber insulators, which lead better understanding of insulator performance. His work advanced the state of art of Flexible AC Transmission by introduction of new circuits for electronic regulation of power system. Dr. Karady contributed to Superconducting Energy Storage System (SMES) by proposing a new interconnection shame. He was one of the first researchers to use neural network for short term load forecasting. In the last decade Dr. Karady received more than $1 million research support from NSF, EPRI, Los Alamos and Utilities.

Dr. Karady has also served as an expert witness in Electrical Power related cases.

1977 to 1986 EBASCO SERVICES INC. New York, NY MANAGER OF ELECTRIC SYSTEMS

Dr. Karady directed the work of twenty professional specialists who perform various electrical system analysis tasks for industrial, government and utility clients. The work included feasibility studies related to power plants, transmission lines and cable systems as well as load flow, transient stability, and EMTP analysis. Dr. Karady headed up the development of the conceptual design of the electrical system for the LAMPF II Accelerator Project. His major contribution was the development of a novel analytical technique for optimization of resonant power supply operation.

CHIEF ENGINEER, COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

He was responsible for the implementation of real time computer systems for power plant monitoring. Performed application studies and successfully managed his department.

CHIEF CONSULTING ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

Dr Karady was responsible for the consulting department's operation. He directed electrical system planning studies, including generation and transmission planning. He supervised transmission line and distribution system design projects. He was also instrumental in obtaining projects from EPRI, DOE and foreign clients. He led several successful project proposal preparation efforts and negotiated contracts. He made several technical presentations both in USA and abroad. Under his direction the department work extended in new technical areas and its size increased.

TASK MANAGER FOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AT THE TFTR PROJECT

He led a team at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, which designed an electric energy conservation and storage system, together with electrical supply. The TFTR TOKOMAK project is a major milestone in fusion research and the novel electric system is a significant engineering achievement.

1969 to 1977 HYDRO QUEBEC INSTITUTE OF RESEARCH

He served first as a Member of Research Staff, later as Program Manager and in 1976 was appointed to IREQ fellow. Dr. Karady directed various research programs. He was the project leader of the HVDC thyristor valve development project for Canadian Westinghouse. (1969 to 1973). Dr. Karady contributed to High Voltage DC thyristor valve technology, through the formulation of a comprehensive theory and development of a novel mathematical model for the analyses of HVDC thyristor valve operation, including turn-on, turn-off process, transient voltages distribution, firing technique.

He contributed to the better understanding of the contamination caused insulator flashover and pioneered the application of composite insulator technology. He was the first to propose a new comprehensive testing technique for composite insulators. He built a fog chamber and polymer insulator test facility.

Obtained research grants from Canadian Electric Association and projects from EPRI and Westinghouse.

1952 TO 1969 TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF BUDAPEST

He advanced from teaching assistant to associate professor and deputy department head. Developed different Electric Power courses, served as a chairman of state examination committee. Dr. Karady introduced a new Power System Course for post graduate students. The course material was published in a monograph in Hungary (1964)

As a deputy department head, he was responsible for the administration and day-to-day operation. He reorganized and improved the department administration and enhanced the cooperation with local industry.

His research work concentrated on high voltage engineering and power system analyses. His major contribution was a novel analysis of impulse voltage distribution in transformers and motors. He built the first repetitive surge generator for measurement of impulse voltage distribution. He developed high voltage measuring and testing devices (impulse generator, impulse voltage divider, cable fault detector) and built the first analog computer in Hungary.

Dr. Karady analyzed the reliability of the cable network serving Budapest and developed a new calculation method.
