Air Barrier

Air Barrier paper is a moisture resistant paper such as roofing felt or a ‘Ves-Queen’ type material that stops water in its liquid state but not in a vapor form. It is wrapped around the house to protect the sheathing from water damage.

Attic Ventilationsoffit vent

A soffit vent is an opening of some form underneath the eave used to allow air flow to the attic or to the cavity below the roof decking

Page 4: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Attic Ventilationridge vent

A ridge vent is a long vent mounted at the top of the roofs ridge used to circulate air though the gable of the house

Page 5: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Attic Ventilationgable vent

A gable vent is a louvered vent backed by a screen used to circulate air through the attic;, it lets out the heat, humidity, etc.

Page 6: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Attic Ventilationroof turbine

A roof turbine is a ventilation that spins by electricity or air flow to regulate air flow through an attic

Page 7: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Backhoe

A backhoe is used to excavate a site it moves earth, soil, and rubble to prep the site for construction, the bucket in the rear of this backhoe measured 22.5 inches.

Concrete Control Joint w/ a Crack

A concrete control joint is a gap cut into a concrete slab to create a weak line to control where the concrete will crack

Page 30: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Isolation joint

An isolation joint is a joint used to relieve stress of expansion and contraction between two concrete things; a slab and column, or

wall, etc.

Front End Loader

Front end loader has a big hydraulic bucket used to move earth or rubble, where a backhoe is for more precise digging a frontend loader is more for lifting and transport of earth

Page 52: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Gypsum Board

An interior facing panel board it is composed of a gypsum core sandwiched between two thin layers of paper

Page 53: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Heat Pump

A heat pump extracts cold or hot air from outside and moves it inside.Advantages: one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool a homeDisadvantages: the possible need for a backup system

All- in- One compressor and condenser

Page 54: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Air Handling Unit

A usually internal unit that helps move and further heats or cools air once it is pumped through the external unit

Page 55: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Batt Insulation

Batt insulation is used to easily insulate walls and ceilings in a waterproof environment

Page 56: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Loose Fill Insulation

Loose fill insulation is a type insulation that is blown into large areas that are normally to remain unfinished

Page 57: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Foamed Insulation

Foamed insulation is blown in/ sprayed in and normally used around windows and doors to it expands in cracks and openings to completely seal off and insulate any air holes

Page 58: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Rigid Insulation

Rigid insulation is used to insulate placed mostly on exteriors beneath the cladding.

Page 59: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Lintel

A lintel is a piece of steel used to span an opening and support the weight of the wall above it

Page 62: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Oriented Strand Board, OSB

OSB is a non-veneered sheet of wood strands oriented for strength and then bound together under pressure

Page 63: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Lavatory

A lavatory normally uses a 1.5 inch pipe as a drain

Page 64: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Water Closet

3 inch pipe is used to drain a water closet

Page 65: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Manufactured Tub

Page 66: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Plumbing vent

The plumbing vent maintains a system of plumbing drains and waste lines at atmospheric pressure by connecting them to the outside air

Page 67: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Sink Mounted in a Countertop

This kitchen sink is a drop in mount

Page 68: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Plywood

A number of layers of wood veneer bounded together under pressureVeneer- a thin layer, sheet, or facing

Page 69: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Radiant Barrier

Radiant barrier is a wrap applied to a structure to reflect the radiant heat of the sun and help cool the interior of the building

Page 70: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Rebar¾ in; #6 rebar

The purpose of the deformations in the rebar is to hold the rebar in place once the concrete has been poured and set up around it

Page 71: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Steep roof drainageGutter- a channel that collects water run off at the eave of the roof

Downspout- a vertical pipe that directs water from the gutter to a lower level

Splashblock- a small precast block of concrete or plastic used to divert water at the end of the down spout

Page 72: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Steep Roof Materialsunderlayment

The underlayment is a material laid between sub floor and floor finish often referred to as roofing felt and can be used to create a moisture barrier between the roof deck and the shingles

Page 73: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Page 74: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Metal Shingle Roof

Shingle- A small water proof material constructed in an overlapping pattern such that water will run off and not under them when applied to a slope

Page 75: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Steep Roof TermsRidge- horizontal line at which the rafters of a roof meet

Valley- the depression or angle formed by two inclined sides of a roof meeting

Eave- the overhanging lower edge of a roof

Rake- the downward sloping side of a roof

Page 81: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Steep Roof Terms

Fascia- flat horizontal surface at the edge of a roofs eave

Soffit- the underside of an eave

Vapor RetarderVapor Retarder is a treated paper that is used to prevent water vapor from moving inside the home outside and to stop the condensation of water inside of walls or ceilings

It is located on the interior side of the insulation panels

Page 88: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Waterproofing

This waterproofing is in a below ground storm shelter that is under construction the gray is and white are both different waterproofing substances both of which are liquid applied. The gray has a thicker viscosity in the application stage

Page 89: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

weephole

A small hole at the base of a wall used to allow condensated water to run down the wall and out of the wall

Page 90: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Page 91: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Sliding Windows

This is a sliding window because its hung so that when opened one sash stays closed and the other slides horizontally in a track.

Page 92: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Casement Window

This is an outward swinging casement window because when the crank is turned the window is swung outward on a hinge like a door

Page 93: Visual Dictionary- Lighttransmitting

Double Hung Window

This is a double hung window because when it is unlocked both the top and bottom sashes slide vertically in tracks to open the window.
