Microsoft ® has designed new exible desktop computing options centered on Windows Vista Enterprise and WindowsServer code name “Longhorn” to give enterprises a range of options for simplifying desktop infrastructure manage -ment. For most customers Windows Vista Enterprise installed on laptops or desktops, combined with the MicrosoftDesktop Optimization Pack, will be the best solution for end-user productivity and streamlined management.

For enterprise early-adopter customers speci cally looking to centralize Windows execution or storage, Microsoftprovides two new options: Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktop and Diskless PCs as part of Vista Enterprise. Thesetwo new options add to the existing Terminal Services offerings.

Dynamic choices for deploying and securing desktops

Local Deployment:Windows Vista Enterprise gives Software Assurance customers whowant to deploy and execute desktops locally the ability to use localvirtual machines, diskless PCs, and remote boot for PCs.

• New! Diskless PCs and Remote Boot : Reduce TCO by eliminatingPC hard drives while centralizing data storage and applications.The OS and applications execute locally on the PC to takeadvantage of the hardware.

• Virtual Machines (VMs) for PCs : Locally run up to four VMs withVirtual PC 2007 on Windows Vista Enterprise to address applica -tion compatibility issues and simplify testing environments.

Centralized DeploymentCentralized desktops in the data center can be achieved usingWindows Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktops (VECD) or TerminalServices (TS).

VECD is a subscription license to provide Windows Vista EnterpriseVirtual Machines on a server to either desktop PCs or thin clientsusing remoting protocols such as Microsoft RDP.

• New! Centralized Desktop for PCs : VECD provides licensing forWindows Vista Enterprise VMs running on servers on top of Windows Covered PCs. This enables enterprises to combine PCproductivity and local execution with the advantages of central-ized deployment.

• New! Centralized Desktop for Thin Clients : To centralizedesktops on the server on thin clients, use Windows VistaEnterprise Centralized Desktop to provide secure Windows VistaVMs on a server-based infrastructure delivering the Windowsexperience to reduced desktop hardware.

Terminal Services is a feature of Windows Server, and is includedwith the operating system. However a Client Access License (CAL) isrequired for every user or device that connects to the terminalserver. Users typically connect from thin clients or rich PCs using aremoting protocol such as Microsoft RDP.

• Centralized Desktop with Terminal Services : TS enables thedesktops of many users to share and run on the same server-basedoperating system that allows large numbers of user desktopswhile centralizing and protecting the applications and the data.

Flexible Desktop Computing Options

The VECD, Diskless PC, and TS options can be extended with Microsoft SoftGrid ® Application Virtualization. SoftGrid for desktops is availableas part of Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP); SoftGrid for Terminal Services is available as a separate device or user CAL. Throughapplication virtualization and local caching on the client, applications can be centrally-managed yet run locally. Application les are copied(or streamed) to the local device only when needed and then executed locally on demand. User preferences and settings are saved separately

and can be stored on the network so that they are always available no matter which device is used to access applications.
