Herculaneum

Herculaneum was a residential coastal town which has been superbly preserved due to the fact that it was covered in volcanic mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The guide will give people the chance to view the town from above before head-ing down and beginning the guided tour which lasts about an hour. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pret-ty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! There are still original timbers showing in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. The tour takes in many of the most important sites including the public baths with their well preserved frescoes and mosaics along with the shops and gymnasium and much more. It is all in all a fascinating tour of possibly one of the best preserved examples of a Roman residential town in the world, brought to life by the years of study and knowledge of our guides. Return to resort around 1:00 pm.

Pompeii & Vesuvius

Escorted by the guide, clients will explore the main features of the ancient city including the baths, bak-eries and theatres just to name a few. The city of Pompeii is usually visited in the morning although this can change during high season. After lunch in Pompeii, the coach departs for Mount Vesuvius. The coach takes the guests to mt. 1000 and if the customers wish, they walk the rest themselves. The customers purchase their entrance tickets. There is a man at the foot of the volcano who has walking sticks which the customers can hire for a small charge to help them walk up to the crater. Upon reaching the crater, a local guide will walk them around the cra-ter (we cannot guarantee this service will always be available). Customers then have free time to walk around. Return to resort approx. 4:00/5:00 pm.

When the catastrophe of 79 AD occurred Herculaneum was sub-merged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of course rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. A large portion of the old Herculaneum is still buried under the modern town and even today excavations are go-ing on to discover what treasures lie buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so work can continue.

Amalfi Drive

The excursion leaves Sorrento via the motorway and reaches the city of Salerno (approx. 90 minutes) that during the me-dieval times was the world’s capital of medicine. The Mon-astery of the Benedictine monks, who probably founded its medical school, offered the best instruction then available. One of the most famous medical texts of that time was the “Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum” written here in Latin and translated into almost every European language. In more modern times Salerno is best remembered for the Allied troops landing on beaches, during the Second World War. In Salerno the guests will have one hour free time to enjoy a walk on the seafront, visit the beautiful cathedral or wander through the pedestrian area. After this stop the excursion will continue to Paestum located to the east of Salerno, after the headlands of Pontecagnano, Battipaglia and Eboli. Arrived in Paestum the guests will have free time for lunch before entering the famous archaeological site. The guided tour (if possible) will also include a visit to the museum. The town of Paestum was founded by the Greeks around 60 BC. Its name derived from Poseidon (the god of the sea) to whom it was dedicated. It was during this period that the Basilica, the Tem-ple of Poseidon and the Temple of Cerere or also knows as Athena were built. Today the Temples and ruins, built of a fine yellow limestone, standing in a bower of aromatic herbs, cy-press and oleander are considered to be the finest examples of their kind. The nearby museum contains many fine sculp-tures found on the site and also the famous divers’ tomb.

Return to Sorrento at 5:00/6:00 pm approx.

Departing from Sorrento in the morning. The coach joins the Amalfi coastal road which is one of the most stunning coast-al drives in Europe. The scenery is superb, looking out over the Mediterranean and along the coastline as the road twists and turns its way towards the town of Positano (approx. 20 minutes from Sorrento). The town is built on different levels from the main road all the way down to sea level, giving the image of a waterfall of buildings cascading down to the sea. As the coach can’t stop here guest can enjoy the views and take photos from the bus. This spectacular journey continues with fabulous views all the way to Amalfi (approximately 1 hour). Arrive in Amalfi around 10:00 am depending on traf-fic. Guests have 2 hours free time in Amalfi where a guid-ed boat trip along the coast may be possible dependant on availability and weather conditions. Customers can also visit the magnificent 9th century Cathedral which proudly domi-nates the main square of Amalfi, wander through the narrow streets of the town and browse the many shops or enjoy a coffee in one of the cafes around Amalfi. After lunch stop, the excursion carries on to Ravello which is situated on the hillside above Amalfi. This is where Wagner was inspired to write part of one of his operas and it is from here that you can enjoy the best views of the Amalfi coastline looking over to Minori, Maiori and beyond. Return to resort approx. between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

Departure and arrival to Ischia, where customers will have a guided tour of the island of Ischia, by bus. Pick-up from your hotel and transfer to the port of Piano di Sorrento. Get on board and sail toward Castellammare di Stabia. Once arrived there, a bus transfer you to Pompeii. At the entrance of the ruins meet the guide to start a 2 hours guided visit of this world-famous site (entrances not included). After the visit, transfer back to the port and departure towards the marvellous island of Capri. Pick-up from your hotel and transfer to the port of Piano di Sorrento. Departure to Amalfi along the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast. Suggest-ed stops in Sorrento: Marciano, Mitigliano and Ba-gni della Regina Giovanna (with free time for swim-ming and snorkeling). Suggested stops on the Amalfi Coastline: Island of Li Galli, Nerano, Praiano (with free time for swimming and snorkeling) - Grotta del-lo Smeraldo (entrance fee not included - € 5,00 p.p.). Arrived in Positano, we will stop for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to explore the pearl of the Amalfi coast. Once in Amalfi there will be another stop of 1 hour and 30 minutes approx to visit the ancient Maritime Republic. Suggested visits in Amalfi Coast: Fiordo di Furore. Departure from Amalfi and return to Sorren-to in the afternoon with an Happy Hour on board and limoncello tasting.

Pick-up from your hotel and transfer by minibus to the splendid city of Positano. During the drive along the characteristic twisty road typical of the famous Amalfi coast, there will be a stop on one of the many panoramic terraces that are on the road to immor-talize this unique panorama at sunset.Arrived in Pos-itano, you will have free time to explore the town on your own. Explore all its narrow streets, terraces and gardens overlooking the bay. Be sure to buy one of the straw handbags or handmade sandals for which Positano is famous. Return to Sorrento later in the evening (11:30 pm approx).

Aboard a private boat, enjoy fabulous views of southern Italy’s sea-side villages and the Li Galli marine reserve, with a picture-perfect sunset as your backdrop.
