In 1899, the partners heading up the Peck Judah Travel Agency in San Francisco conceived a plan to place railroad timetableand brochure display racks in major hotels all over the West. Serviced by reliable men, these towering oak displays wereround-the-clock information centers for the traveling public.

This simple distribution network was acquired in 1960 by John W. Fearn, who changed the name to Certified Folder DisplayService (because each location is “certified” in writing by a location official) and started the long and difficult process ofexpanding this network from fewer than 100 locations to over 22,000 locations today.

In 2009, Certified proudly celebrated a 110 year history (1899-2009) of providing visitor information to the traveling public.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS

1. DESIGN A strong, simple headline is essential. Your sales message needs to appear in the top 2-3 inches of the

front panel of your brochure. If possible, repeat the headline on the back panel. Be sure to include both the days

and hours of operation, a simple map with written directions, a telephone number (toll-free if possible), and your

website address. You should also include a call-to-action (special offer or discount). If you are using photographs,

make sure they are current, clear and appealing.

2. SIZE The final size of your brochure should not exceed 4 inches wide by 9 inches tall. This is an industry standard.

For improved visibility, a vertical layout is essential.

3. PAPER For multi-panel brochures, we recommend using no less than an 80-lb. coated stock. Be sure to specify

“vertical grain.” For rack cards, we recommend using a 10-point coated card-stock or 100-lb. cover stock.

4. BROCHURE QUANTITY For many clients, a standard suggested amount is 50 brochures per location for the first

month, then 25 brochures per location each month thereafter. The quantity needed will vary depending on the

thickness of the brochure and its subject matter. Please consult your Certified Sales Representative for a specific

quantity estimate.

5. DATE MATERIALS Always include a print date on your brochure, and, if possible, indicate the country of origin

(e.g., “Printed in USA”). This will facilitate international shipping. Brochures which have minor year-to-year changes

should have some small change on the cover to aid in identifying whether it is “current” or “out-of-date.” This will

help anyone who might handle your materials for you. Be sure to consider what you want done with materials from

each preceding year.

6. FOLDING Remain with a “simple fold” when producing your brochure. This will assure reasonable folding costs

as well as produce a sturdy brochure for your paper weight. Some elaborate folds cost extra money and result in

a weakened brochure that “kneels over” in the brochure rack.

7. BANDING Whenever possible, brochures should be banded inside each box. Never exceed 500 brochures in

each band. Paper bands are sufficient. All brochures in a bundle should face the same direction.

8. PACKAGING The maximum weight of each box of brochures should not exceed 35 pounds. All boxes should be

clearly marked with the client’s name, the contents, and the number of brochures contained therein. Use suitable

sized boxes. Boxes not filled can be damaged during shipping and storage.

9. OWNERSHIP OF DIGITAL PLATES, AND ARTWORK This is probably the single most important factor in

saving money! Specify on your purchase order or on your brochure printing contract that upon final payment,

all digital files, plates, etc., become your property. This leaves you free to shop for the best prices in the future and

keeps you from becoming a “captive customer.”
