28 May 2017, Seventh Sunday of Easter www.stpatricka2.org Now that a few months have passed, Father Tom asked me to reflect on my experience leading a monthly Rosary with the residents of the Whitmore Lake Regency assisted living facility. I humbly offer the following few thoughts. First, I have been struck by the power of a universal devotion, a category in which the Rosary is nearly without equal. At the Regency, one may witness residents who sometimes struggle to maintain a conversational topic or remember the events of the day remain focused in extended prayer and recite every word of the Rosary accurately. This experience leads me to think little of my own attempts at creating personal devotions or composing prayers. Innovation clearly pales in comparison to tradition in keeping the flame of faith kindled in the hearts of the kind elders I have met. When we gather in a repurposed cafeteria area on the second Wednesday of each month, often amidst the bustle of an overtaxed care staff handling several issues at once, the power of a common manner of prayer and participation in a petition to Our Lady shared by our ancestors overwhelms the environmental distractions. This affords a small group of the faithful the chance to quietly trudge along on the narrow path together. Next, I have been grateful for the opportunity to be near elders, folks who have passed through tumultuous times in the world and in the Church and retained their attachment to the Blessed Virgin. As a young man still building the foundation of my family and interacting daily with my beautiful son, it is too simple for me to forget the words we hear each Ash Wednesday: “…and unto dust you shall return.” While the residents at the Regency nearly always possess a liveliness in their eyes and offer a joyous disposition, I am still reminded that the vigor of my youth will pass. To equate success in the eyes of God with any human achievement is vanity, as the author of Ecclesiastes reminds us in different words. Praying with the humble, sincere residents at the Regency, I am reminded to “lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal. For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also” (St. Matthew 6:20- 21). Finally, each visit is a strong testament to the power of song. After praying the Rosary, we sing a hymn, often from our parish’s Adoremus hymnal. In a place so imbued with the impositions of time – from medicine schedules to PA announcements to the effects of aging – a well-known song reminds us of past celebrations of feasts, connects us to composers and poets from bygone ages, and lifts our hearts and minds to the One Who is Eternal, He alone Who transcends time. The singing is clearly a highlight of the week for the faithful residents; I suspect they don’t know it ranks similarly for me. While my time visiting the Regency so far has been brief, I hope fervently it has been fruitful for the residents; it certainly has been so for me. Please join me the second Wednesday of each month. The next opportunity is June 14th. NOTES FROM JACOB VISOVATTI— PARISHIONER Visiting Regency

Memorial Day Mass Give thanks to God for the freedom we enjoy and those who have sacrificed to provide us with it by assisting at Holy Mass on Memorial Day, Monday May 29th. By praying the Mass, we offer the most significant thanks. Praying the Mass also offers spiritual help to those who have placed their lives in the service of our nation. We will have our Memorial Day Mass at 10am in the cemetery if weather permits. If it is rainy, we will be in the Church. Hope to see you there.
