Part I of the U.S. Bishops document, “Faithful Citizenship”, sets forth four major principles of the Catholic social tradition: 1) the dignity of the human person; 2) subsidiarity; 3) the common good; 4) and solidarity. Last week we finished discussing these four principles, so let’s move on to the bishops’ conclusion to Part I of the document:

“These themes from Catholic social teaching provide a moral framework that does not easily fit ideologies of ‘right’/’left,’ ‘liberal’/’conservative,’ or the platform of any political party. They are not partisan or sectarian, but reflect fundamental ethi-cal principles that are common to all people. As leaders of the Church in the United States, we bishops have the duty to ap-ply these moral principles to key public policy decisions facing our nation, outlining directions on issues that have important moral and ethical dimensions. We hope Catholics and others will seriously consider these policy applications as they make their own decisions in public life.”

“The Church is involved in the political process but is not partisan; it cannot champion any candidate or party. Our cause is the defense of human life and dignity and the protection of the weak and vulnerable. The Church is engaged in the politi-cal process but should not be used. We welcome dialogue with political leaders and candidates; we seek to engage and per-suade public officials. The Church is principled but not ideological. We cannot compromise basic principles or moral teach-ing. We are committed to clarity about our moral teaching and to civility. In public life, it is important to practice the virtues of justice and charity that are at the core of our Tradition. We should work with others in a variety of ways to advance our moral principles.”

“In light of these principles and the blessings we share as part of a free and democratic nation, we bishops vigorously repeat our call for a renewed kind of politics: 1) focused more on moral principles than on the latest polls; 2) focused more on the needs of the weak than on benefits for the strong; and 3) focused more on the pursuit of the common good than on the demands of narrow interests.” Thus concludes Part I of the U.S. bishops’ document, which focuses on the general princi-ples behind the Church’s engagement in public life.

In Part II, the bishops apply these principles to various concrete issues facing our nation today. It begins as follows: “In this brief summary, we bishops call attention to issues with significant moral dimensions that should be carefully considered in each campaign and as policy decisions are made in the years to come. As the descriptions below indicate, some issues involve principles that can never be abandoned, such as the fundamental right to life and marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Others reflect our judgment about the best way to apply Catholic principles to policy issues. While people of good will may sometimes choose different ways to apply and act on some of our principles, Catholics cannot ignore their inescapable moral challenges or simply dismiss the Church’s guidance or policy directions that flow from these principles.”

Human life is “the most fundamental good and the condition for all other goods.” Recall the famous words at the begin-ning of the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the gov-erned.” Even the Founding Fathers recognized the fundamental dignity of human life as the foundation for all other rights.

The U.S. bishops emphasize that the dignity and inherent value of human life is most often threatened at its most vulnera-ble stages, at its beginning and at its end:

Abortion and euthanasia have become preeminent threats to human life and dignity because they directly attack life it-self. Abortion, the deliberate killing of a human being before birth, is never morally acceptable and must always be opposed. Cloning and destruction of human embryos for research or even for potential cures are always wrong. The purposeful taking of human life by assisted suicide and euthanasia is not an act of mercy, but an unjustifiable assault on human life. Geno-cide, torture, and the direct and intentional targeting of noncombatants in war or terrorist attacks are always wrong.”

The bishops encourage all people of good will to not only work and speak out against abortion and euthanasia, but to help shape civil laws that protect innocent human life: “Laws that legitimize any of these practices are profoundly unjust and im-moral. Our Conference supports laws and policies to protect human life to the maximum degree possible, including constitu-tional protection for the unborn and legislative efforts to end abortion and euthanasia. We also promote a culture of life by supporting laws and programs that encourage childbirth and adoption over abortion and by addressing poverty, providing health care, and offering other assistance to pregnant women, children, and families.

Notice that the bishops recognize that it is not enough to simply create laws against abortion, but rather we must promote a culture of life that addresses the societal breakdown that leads women and men to make the tragic choice for aborting their unborn child. Abortion is not simply a personal moral and legal issue, but also a social, economic, and public health issue.

The Road to Easter Joy! We have all traveled “that” road. The road full of bumps,

twists and turns. The road full of hardship, sickness and pain. We have sacrificed. We have loved until it hurt.

Jesus traveled “that” road, too. It was full of bumps, twists and turns. He fell not once, but three times under the weight of the heavy cross. He was tired and thirsty. His body ached. His head hurt from the crown of thorns. But, He kept embracing all that suffering for the love of our souls. And then He was nailed to His cross. There, hanging on the tree, He looked down at the world. Though His heart was aching, it was full of merciful love for us. And then He died. It was Good Friday…but what followed was Glorious!

Thankfully, Jesus walks “that” road with us as our friend. In the end, “that” road will bring us to Easter joy and the

glory of His resurrection! After all, you can’t have Easter without Good Friday! So, come to the Adoration Chapel this week and thank Jesus for traveling “that” road with us.
