Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you,

O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;

to you I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,

But in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen

from Fr. Michael asking for gift cards and/or wire transfer please verify with him personally to avoid

any fraud.

From the Desk of Fr. Michael

Dear Parishioners,

There is a story of a man who had visiting the Eternal city, Rome, on his bucket list which in-

cluded a chance to meet and see the Holy Father. So, he saved up money and put together a trip

to Rome, fulfilling the trip of his lifetime. The day before he left, he went to his barber for a hair-

cut. He told the barber about his plans.

“Rome,” said the barber, “it’s overrated. I’ve been there. Who are you flying?” “Well,” the man

said, “I’m flying Alitalia.” “That’s a mistake,” said the barber. “That airline is unreliable. It is

always late. And the food—you can’t eat the food. Trust me; you won’t eat a thing. Where do

you plan to stay when you get there?” “Well,” said the man, “I have reservations at the Hotel

Michelangelo outside of the walls of Vatican City. It’s supposed to be very good.” “I’ve stayed

there,” said the barber. “It’s over -priced. When you need something, you can’t find any-

one. What are you gonna do in Rome?”

“Well,” the man said, “my heart’s desire is to meet the Pope. I’ve asked for a ticket to a Wednes-

day Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square.” “Forget it,” said the barber. “The Pope is very

busy. He only has time for wealthy and important people, not ordinary people like you and

I. Trust me, when you are in the Square, he will look a dot on stage.”

A few weeks later the man returned to his barber. The barber greeted him and said, “I bet you

never made it to Rome, did you?” “Oh yes, I did,” said the man. “I flew Alitalia. And not only

did we arrive thirty minutes ahead of time, but they bumped me up to first class and I ate like a

king. I stayed at the Hotel Michelangelo. And they were nice enough to send a car to the airport

to pick me up and give me a room that had a beautiful view of the city. The service was impecca-

ble.

But most of all,” said the man, “I had a private audience with the Pope in the papal apart-

ments.” “No,” said the barber. “I’m amazed. I can’t believe it. Well, what did you do when you

saw the Pope? Did he say anything to you?” “Oh yes,” said the man. “I was brought into his

apartments and I knelt down to kiss his ring. He looked down at me and said, ‘My son, where did

you get that terrible haircut?’”

It is very easy for us to become negative. We don’t have to look too far with the constant news

cycle of the current affairs in our local community, state, country, and the world. And it is even

easier to become negative about the people and the things which are closest to us. Family and

friends who are not doing what we think is right and we talk about this situation with anyone who

is willing to lend an ear instead of the person in question.

(Continued on the next page)

From the Desk of Fr. Michael (Continued)

This weekend’s Gospel from Matthew addresses how to remedy negativity. Jesus says in to-

day’s Gospel, “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest.” Jesus

is actually quoting a passage from the Old Testament book of Sirach. The words that he is quot-

ing are those of Wisdom.

In the words from Sirach, Wisdom tells us that if we labor, if we are burdened, if we have any

need, we are to come to God because God will not turn us away. God will welcome us and give

us rest. Lady Wisdom tells us that our God is one who loves us and is with us. We need not fear

approaching God, because God welcomes and helps us. Now of course, as soon as we recog-

nize the generosity and welcoming of God, we realize that we have a responsibility to be gener-

ous and to welcome others with our own words, actions, thoughts, and behaviors.

Thus, the remedy to negativity is acknowledgement of God in our lives, a God who is loving,

who is caring, and who is present. Then, nurturing a grateful heart to God by counting our

blessings whether it is good health, a job, a roof over our head, food on the table, clothes on our

back, or if we are struggling, we have a support system of those stepping up. Once we recog-

nize these blessings and graces, we thank God and in turn be generous in how we express our

gratitude, patience, compassion, love, forgiveness, and understanding to others.

On this 4th of July Weekend, let us all acknowledge the generosity of God who has given us so

much then use the gifts that we have received to be positive and uplifting to others.

Have a Blessed 4th of July and God Bless America!

Fr. Michael
