Professional Learning Leaders (AKA “Trekkies”),

You are about to embark on a mission to explore new strategies, ideas, and technologies for the new world

of professional learning. We call this “The Next Generation of Professional Learning” for a new time and age.

On behalf of the Florida Association of Staff Development (FASD), we welcome you to the fall Leadership

Conference at the beautiful Tradewinds Resort, where you will be transported to new learning. Two

keynote “captains” will guide us on this journey: Nancy Dana, Professor at the University of Florida, will

show us how to connect teacher inquiry and PLCs for powerful learning; and Fred Brown, Deputy Executive

Director of Learning Forward, will help us understand how to develop Learning Systems focused on

continuous professional learning. In addition, concurrent sessions and action labs are planned to help you

explore new frontiers, from technology to mentoring and on to innovative designs for high quality learning.

This journey is not all work – we have included informal networking times and regional meetings where you

can interface with your fellow Trekkies to share powerful practices. Our new digital conference app (XD

Events) will guide your exploration during the three days, and also provide space for you to engage in

feedback on sessions like a true 21st Century learner. Finally, we hope you visit the new worlds in our

exhibit hall where our generous sponsors will show you their latest and greatest innovations to improve

learning for all. We look forward to learning and exploring with you at WARP SPEED!

Dear FASD Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2016 Florida Association for Staff Development Leadership Conference (FASDLC). This year

the FASD Board decided to “boldly go where no one has gone before” and voyage in the land of Professional

Learning: The Next Generation!

Each of us face the daily opportunity of meeting the diverse needs of many learners from a variety of generations

as well as learning styles in an environment that is ever changing. As planning for this conference got underway, the mission goal became clear. Our fleets need tools and strategies for providing professional learning in ways

that will meet the needs of all generations! The planning committee began feverishly working to “Make It So!”

I hope that as you participate with us in this mission, that you will benefit from the sessions planned and have

opportunities to network with others during this trek. Take time over the conference to engage in

conversations with colleagues and share your challenges and successes so you leave energized with lots of new

ideas!

On behalf of the more than 10,000+ members of Learning Forward, the Board of Trustees, and staff, I

extend best wishes for an outstanding fall conference. Congratulations to the conference planners,

presenters, and volunteers. Each year FASD offers a powerful learning experience to advance high

quality teaching and learning for educators and students through standards-based professional

learning. We look forward to collaborating over the next eighteen months as we plan for the Learning

Forward 2017 Annual Conference that will occur in Orlando for the third time.

Florida is home to many graduates of the Learning Forward Academy, former conference committee

members, and professional development “stars.” We are grateful for the wonderful relationship we

share with the board of the Florida affiliate, its members, and the great practitioners working day-to-

day in the field to improve professional learning to increase educator effectiveness and student

achievement. Professional Learning: The Next Generation reflects the conference planners’

KEYNOTE OFFICERS

Frederick Brown

Frederick Brown is currently the deputy executive director for

Learning Forward, an international association focused on

increasing teacher and leader effectiveness and student

achievement through standards-based professional learning.

Prior to his appointment at Learning Forward, Brown was a

senior program officer at The Wallace Foundation. Frederick

has served as elementary school teacher and principal as well

as a middle school assistant principal.

Nancy Fichtman Dana, Ph.D. is a passionate advocate for

practitioner inquiry as a mechanism for powerful job-embedded

professional learning. She is currently Professor of Education in

the School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at

the University of Florida. Nancy began her career teaching

elementary school in New York and has worked with numerous

schools, districts, and universities in implementing powerful

programs of job-embedded professional learning through inquiry

in several states and countries, as well as conducted extensive

research on the process. She has published ten books (including

The PLC Book in 2016) and over 60 articles and book chapters

related to teachers’ and administrators’ professional learning

through inquiry. Her work has received many honors including

the Association of Teacher Educator’s Distinguished Research in

Teacher Education Award and the National Staff Development

Council (Learning Forward) Book of the Year Award.

The (ECET2) movement is occurring across the country out of a desire to provide a forum for teachers to learn from one another and celebrate the profession. Learn how Polk County’s ECET2 Team steered their Starship Enterprise and harnessed the power of teacher leaders in their district to take the ECET2 movement into schools across the district. Come with us on this exploratory and ongoing mission to boldly go where few have gone before!

Disrupt Your Orbital Velocity Inquiry

Theresa Axford What do Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong and British Columbia have in Common? They are top performers

in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and they use “Inquiry” as the embedded

professional learning model in their schools. In this session, you will learn why inquiry can help teachers

achieve the goals that they have for student achievement and professional learning along with the value it

can have for sharing best practices and innovations across the school and the district.

Data Analysis in the Inquiry-Oriented PLC Nancy Dana, University of Florida Data analysis is one of the most complex components of PLC work. In this session, participants will review the process of data analysis and observe a PLC analyzing data “in action” through participation in a reader’s theatre. We’ll debrief the experience together, exploring the important role data analysis plays in job-embedded professional learning, and discuss practical strategies as well as challenges inherent in facilitating data analysis as a professional development leader.

Using Data Visualizations to Identify Florida’s Most Accomplished Practitioners Sam Foerster

Participants will interact with data visualizations that reveal the Florida classrooms, schools, and districts where world-class learning opportunities were in evidence in 2015-16. Additionally, participants will learn how the K12 Collaborative will be helping district administrators, principals, and teachers discover and apply the know-how used by Florida’s most accomplished practitioners to implement the critical shifts in content, pedagogy, and student work necessitated by the Florida Standards.

Teacher Preparation for Next Generation Teachers: Alternative Isn’t Alternative Anymore Cele Oldham With declining numbers of graduates from colleges of education, districts are hiring more non-ed majors on temporary teaching certificates. Learn about best practices in one district’s implementation of the state approved alternative certification program (PDCP). This session will provide opportunities for participants to engage in collaborative discussions regarding options of FL teacher preparation routes.

Optimizing and Accelerating ELA Instruction Becky Finn, Jennifer Michaels, Allison Kanji A teacher’s language and mindset impacts their actions. A teacher’s actions impact a student’s mindset. A student’s mindset impacts their performance. Person First Language is about respect and dignity and it puts the person – not the condition – first. Participants will understand the influence of language on mindset and will learn how to formulate feedback that activates/bolsters a growth mindset in learners .

The Planning Period and Beyond. . . Seth Edwards, Andrea Pyatt, Lake County Journey into the far-reaches of educational space in search of time for quality, job-embedded, collaborative professional learning. As we strive to revitalize learning experiences for the modern teacher through multi-modal and more personalized options, underlying questions remain:

Do teachers even have time for professional learning? What strategies are districts using to find time? How can collaborative time become meaningful, personalized PD?

In this collaborative action lab, we will share best-practices and explore potential scenarios to help leaders create conditions—during the school day—for teachers to learn from one another, access the PD they need in real-time, and ultimately, do their best work.

Engagement Strategies That Can Be Used in Your Next PD Megan Kendrick, Beth Hofer, Indian River As we move away from the sit-and-get model of professional development, it is always nice to have a tool box of strategies and routines that can be used and adapted to fit ANY professional development. This session will model community building activities and thinking routines that will foster creativity and promote collaboration across the audience. Participants will also be asked to share effective strategies that have worked for them and share them with the group so we can add to our virtual toolbox and continue to learn from each other!

Induction and Mentoring Logan Johnson , Lindsey Hampton, Marion County Effective teaching is not intuitive. New teachers, whether they come to the classroom as a second career or directly from a teacher education program, all need support. Effective induction programs provide teachers with an opportunity to learn and grow as part of a learning community. The MCPS Educator Induction program offers new and early career teachers the chance to grow professionally through collaboration, modeling of exemplary practices, and differentiation of support based on experience and interests, using a multi-year induction program. The key to student achievement is effective teaching. Come see how Marion County is growing effective teachers.

Impact Shane Fairbairn, Jennifer Rivera, NEFEC What is impact and how does it differ from implementation? In this session, participants will engage with the facilitators to explore how to use existing PL to create deep and meaningful levels of implementation based on the research and practical practice by NEFEC. Participants will reflect on how they currently approach the "after and between PL" and make connections on how to improve or enhance educators' implementation of learning. Regardless of what you use, this session will ignite a spark in your context.
