A Gift Horse... Carlton House (Street Cry {Ire}) is named after theformer Royal residence, which stood next to St James'Park in London and was demolished in 1825. The coltwas bred by Darley, and presented to The Queen as atoken of Sheikh Mohammed=s gratitude. John Warrenexplained, AHer Majesty had a horse called HighlandGlen (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who had been a bittroublesome in the stalls. The Sheikh wanted to buyhim and take him to race in Dubai. As The Queendoesn=t race in Dubai, she let him have the horse. TheSheikh was very grateful for the gift and, as aconsequence, he sent her four yearlings. SheikhMohammed and John Ferguson handpicked theyearlings for her, and they are excellent judges.@ Bredby The Queen, Highland Glen broke his maiden on theturf at Lingfield in May of 2009, and won a pair ofhandicap races at the end of the season despite hisreluctance to load into the starting stalls. He joinedSheikh Mohammed=s team that fall and, in his first runin the Godolphin blue, captured a lucrative Meydanhandicap. An eye-catcher when a strong-finishing runner-up in amile maiden at Salisbury on debut in late September,Carlton House sent out some positive signals whensuccessful by nine lengths from Yaseer (GB) (Dansili{GB}) in a similar event over the same trip at Newburythe following month. Following some smart homeworkon Newmarket=s slopes, the Darley-bred colt hademerged as a leading light in the ante-post picture forthe June 4 Epsom Classic and duly upstaged hiscontemporaries in this crucial test. Keen early in fourthoff the slow pace set by Pisco Sour (Lemon Drop Kid),he was short of room in early stretch following thatrival and Seville, who was committed by ChristopheSoumillon with a quarter mile remaining. Squeezingbetween that duo soon after, he needed only vigoroushand riding from Ryan Moore to subdue Ballydoyle=sraider. World Domination (Empire Maker), thewell-touted 5-2 second favorite, briefly threatened inthe straight before fading into fourth. AIt was a horriblerace and he did well to win as they didn=t go any pace,@jockey Ryan Moore said. AIt was a shame, becauseno-one=s really learnt a great deal. It was messy andeveryone was trying to get in and get cover, but beinga trial, we decided to ride him that way. If it had beenanother race, we would have gone on and let him bowl, but we wanted to teach him and it was important ithappened that way.@ Trainer Sir Michael Stoute, whohad won this five times, including with subsequentDerby winners Shahrastani in 1986 and North Light (Ire)in 2004, revealed that the winner had suffered from afoot infection a few weeks ago that put him offschedule slightly. He added, AWe thought it could be amessy race and certainly turned out to be that, but hewould have learned a bit. He went through a nice, tightopening and let=s hope he progresses more fromthat--he is relaxed enough and has a good mind.@

The Queen=s Racing Manager John Warren said,AAfter he won at Newbury, I asked Michael >are we onfor a Derby trial?= and he replied >definitely= and that=sunlike him, as he usually sits on the fence. This willmean a lot to The Queen. She=s very aware, but doesn=ttry to influence. The excitement surrounding her havinga Derby favorite will be great. After she had the RoyalAscot winner a few years ago, people mentioned it atevery public engagement for about two months.@ TheQueen, who inherited the string of her father, KingGeorge VI, when he died in 1952, almost enjoyedDerby glory with her first Classic runner Aureole (GB) in1953. Running four days after her coronation, the coltwas second to Gordon Richards' mount Pinza (GB). Hersilks have been carried to success in five Classics, withthe last coming in 1977 courtesy of Dunfermline (GB) inboth the Epsom Oaks and St Leger. Cont. p3

Re-Match On For Seville... Aidan O=Brien was offering no excuses for Sevilleafterwards. He told PA Sport, AIt was a very good raceand a very good trial. We are delighted with our fellow, but the winner picked up better than we did. We can=tcomplain and the likelihood is he=ll go to Epsom.@ J “TDN Rising Star” J World Domination is onethat will probably be giving Epsom a miss, according toKhalid Abdullah=s Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe.AWe are happy enough, but he=s still a big baby,@Grimthorpe explained. AAt this stage, I=d say Epsom isunlikely--he might go to Ascot [for the June 16 G2 KingEdward VII S.].@ Pisco Sour=s trainer Hughie Morrison iskeen to try his colt in the June 4 Classic. He told PASport, AHe=s run a very good race--better than anyonewould have thought. We came here thinking the groundwould be good-to-soft, but it ended up being quitequick. I thought we might end up running in the G3Queen=s Vase at Ascot, but we obviously have to lookat the Derby now.@

INTERNATIONAL MEDICATION SUMMIT INJUNE The American Association of EquinePractitioners, National Thoroughbred Racing Associationand the Racing Medication and Testing Consortiumhave joined forces to host the first AInternationalSummit on Race Day Medication, EIPH and theRacehorse.@ The event will be held June 13-14 in NewYork city at a location still to be announced.Representatives from Europe, the Middle East, Asia,Australia, the U.S. and Canada will participate in thesummit. Summit panels will offer discussions onregulatory issues surrounding race day medication;veterinary viewpoints on the management of ExerciseInduced Pulmonary Hemorrhage; the management ofEIPH from the perspective of trainers. AOur goal is toshine a light on how other countries manage a varietyof issues relating to race day medication,@ said NTRAPresident and CEO Alex Waldrop. AWe look forward toproviding a forum for sharing valuable perspectivesfrom some of the world=s foremost trainers, regulatoryauthorities and veterinarians.@ RMTC Chairman Dr.Robert Lews added, AThis summit represents an effortto bring together racing representatives from aroundthe world to exchange information on the variousapproaches to managing medication use, especiallyregarding the management of EIPH, and for all to hearthe overall perspectives of each on horse racing ingeneral. Every country that conducts racing encountersproblems at one time or another, but EIPH is a universalproblem. RMTC believes it cannot be anything butbeneficial to open the lines of communication betweeninternational stakeholders so that we can learn fromone another to improve racing and protect the horses."

AUSTRALIAN TRAINERS TO REPORT EQUINESURGERIES According to accounts in the Australianpress, the Australian stewards have approved a policythat will require Thoroughbred trainers to report anysurgery undergone by horses in their care. The decisionwas reached during the stewards= annual NationalPolicy Conference, held in Melbourne this week. ATherewas a rumour So You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire})had had a throat operation, and in the finish, we madeit our business to find out,@ Racing Victoria LimitedChief Steward Terry Bailey told the Herald-Sun. ABut wedon't want a repeat of that occurrence. Trainers needto be more conscious of the punter. Now they will berequired to report any sort of surgery, whether it beupper respiratory or even any sign of lameness or gaitdysfunction. Any horse, any time, if something=shappened, we believe the customer has the right toknow.@ Stewards questioned So You Think=s trainerBart Cummings after it came to their attention that the2009 G1 Cox Plate winner had a surgical procedure tocorrect a throat problem during the off season at thebeginning of 2010. Cummings insisted his charge wasfit for his return in the >10 G2 Memsie S., and So YouThink proved him right with a handy victory. The newpolicy must now be approved and implemented byAustralia=s major racing clubs.

Although they are calling itgood, good-to-soft in places, they haven=t had any rainfor a long time, so it would be on the faster side ofgood. We are just going to sit tight and wait for therain.@ As expected, Denford Stud=s Apr. 16 G3 FredDarling S. winner Rimth (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) wasadded to the G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches, making afield of 18 for the fillies= Classic.

ALL WELL IN THE KINGDOM Trainer Graham Motion continued to be pleased withhow Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) has comeout of his victory in Saturday=s GI Kentucky Derby. AThehorse is great,@ Motion, back home at his Fair Hilltraining center base, said yesterday. AHe=s not worriedabout anything. He seems to be traveling well, which isalways a concern coming out of a race like that. AIwant to enjoy the Derby this week, then next weekwe=ll start worrying about winning the Preakness,@Motion said. AThere=s no doubt there=s going to bepressure, because you=re going to feel like everybody=son your shoulders. Everybody wants this to happen, sohow do you not feel pressure?@ Motion did admit thathe is concerned about the quick turnaround betweenthe Derby and the Preakness. AIt=s unlikely to me thathe=s going to progress in the Preakness coming back intwo weeks,@ the Englishman said. Arch Traveler, second in his career opener atAqueduct Dec. 11, came up short by 3/4 of a length asthe 3-5 chalk in a seven-furlong test at Gulfstream Jan.15. The third time proved the charm when he donnedcap and gown in a similar test at the Hallandale ovalFeb. 6, and he kept up the good work with a hard-fought allowance success going nine panels 20 dayslater. That series took its toll, however, and theCentennial colorbearer faded to finish sixth of eight inthe GI Florida Derby Apr. 3. Facing a less salty grouphere, the odds-on chalk broke sharply from the railbefore conceding the lead to the speedy Glickman. ArchTraveler was full of run on the turn, but was forced towait until Glickman drifted out. He finally came throughand the race was over in a matter of strides, withjockey Jose Lezcano gearing him down late. RockingOut rallied strongly after a tardy start to get third.
