A Video Worth Your TimeA couple of weeks ago I came across a video onFaceBook that I think you’ll really enjoy. There are afew scenes similar to a video we watched togetherthis summer, but most of it is new stuff I’d never seen.

Very interesting, informative and entertaining. Here’sone scene that will raise a smile.

A very smart koi eating out of it’s master’s hand. Youcan see it here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xotwi4_japanology-109-nishikigoi_lifestyle.

The Doctor is InA couple of years ago I received an interesting emailfrom a Dr. Jessie Sanders. She was veterinarian spe-cializing in aquatic animal care that had recentlyarrived in the area and she was wondering if it mightbe possible to join our “wonderful club”.

Well I could scarcely believe our good fortune. Iimmediately replied that heck yes she could join. We’d be thrilled to have her.

And so she did along with ZNA NorCal, Monterey BayKoi and Pond Club, SF Bay Area Koi Club and prob-ably some others that I don’t know about. You mayget the idea she’s into fish a bit, and you would beright.

Recently she agreed to become our Vice Presidentso I sat down with her to learn more about our newVP.

The Doc and a Patient

Dr. Sanders is the owner and head veterinarian atAquatic Veterinary Services of Northern California, anambulatory veterinary hospital specializing in fish. Weasked her a few questions:

• How did you first get interested in aquatic animalmedicine?

As a kid, I was always excited to visit the beach andour local aquarium. I loved fish from a young ageand had a small goldfish tank when I was younger.

I completed my B.S. in Marine Biology at the Uni-versity of Rhode Island, and during that time, hadthe opportunity to volunteer at the same localaquarium that had fascinated me when I was

younger. Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT opened myeyes to all the different challenges of bringing seacreatures up out of the depths for people to see.

After talking with the advance medical and veteri-nary teams, I wanted to join them and learn moreabout all aspects of aquatic animals. I applied toveterinary school for the specific purpose of learn-ing more about how to take care of these uniqueanimals.

• Where did you receive your training?

I completed my traditional DVM training at TuftsUniversity in Massachusetts. However, sinceaquatic animal medicine is a non-traditional spe-cialty, I had to take additional classes during myfree summers and senior clinical rotations.

I completed the basics of aquatic animal medicineat AQUAVET I and MARVET Grand Cayman.AQUAVET is the premier program for veterinarystudents interested in aquatic animal medicine. From invertebrates to marine mammals, all topicsof aquatic medicine were covered.

MARVET in Grand Cayman added on additionalspecies such as corals and reptiles, such as seaturtles. Both programs provided hands-on learningin addition to many lecture hours.

During my clinical rotation time my senior year ofveterinary school, I had more opportunities to workwith aquatic animals. I completed externships atSeaWorld Orlando, the Marine Mammal Centerhere in California, I went back to Mystic Aquariumand also worked with Aquatic Veterinary Servicesof Western New York, where my mentor, Dr. HelenSweeney, works. Upon completion of my veterinarydegree, I completed AQUAVET II, a completecourse in aquatic pathology.

All of my training culminated in the completion ofmy certification as an aquatic veterinarian throughthe World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association. This certifies that I have received thorough trainingin all aspects of aquatic veterinary medicine.

• What is the hardest part of your job?

•The hardest part of my job is the challenge ofworking with underwater patients. With cats ordogs, you can use some physical restraint when

they won’t cooperate, but the same cannot be donewith fish.

Their protective slime coat also makes them hardto handle. From everything including physicalexams to surgery, equipment must be adapted toworking underwater or very near water. Just thesimple task of catching a fish can be the trickiestpart of an exam. Thankfully, I have a lot experiencewith that after many years working in an aquarium.

Dr. Jessie at Work

• What is the most fun part about your job?

The most fun I have on the job is working with myassistants and visiting students on surgical cases. Ilove getting others involved in this unique veteri-nary field and surgeries are great to get more peo-ple involved. With the opening of our new hospital,we will have a special procedure area that can becustomized to accommodate just a few staff ormany visitors. I am always looking for ways to getmore people interested in aquatic veterinary medi-cine.

• What are your future business plans?

We have big plans for 2015! Aquatic VeterinaryServices will be opening our first fish hospital! Wewill have heated holding for sick fish and a surgicalprocedure suite. Quarantining new or sick fish canbe done with little stress for owners, as we will pro-vide a pick-up and delivery service.

We will also be opening a retail store for all thingskoi at the same location. Santa Cruz Koi will have

everything koi owners need to keep their pondsclean and healthy. Our new business will belocated in Soquel, CA and we will have more infor-mation coming out in the next few months. Wehope to be opening spring of 2015!

The New Hospital
