• Trondheim was founded in 997 by the Viking King Olav Tryggvason,

and holds a special place in Norwegian history and culture. • Trondheim, Norway’s first capital, is situated in the county of

Sør-Trøndelag. We are far north, but the warm Gulf Stream blesses us with a fairly mild climate.

• Trondheim is home to around 170 000 inhabitants. But if we count the large number of students (every sixth inhabitant is a student) the population swells to more than 195 000. The students add a youthful atmosphere to this thousand-year old city.

Nidaros Cathedral- the Norwegian national sanctuary

Nidaros Cathedral is the world´s northernmost cathedral and Norway´s national shrine.

It was started in the year 1070 and is build above the tomb of St. Olav.

The architectural style of the cathedral is Romanesque and Gothic.

Historically it was an important destination for pilgrims coming from all of Northern Europe.

The Archbishop’s PalaceThe Archbishop´s Palace was the Archbishop´s main seat from the middle of the 12th Century.Today it houses several exhibitions: Norway Crown Regalia and the Archbishop´s Palace museum containing original sculptures from Nidaros Cathedral.

The crown jewels, or The Royal regalia, of Norway include nine items: the king's crown, the sword of the realm, the king's scepter, the king's orb, the queen's crown, the queen's scepter, the queen's orb, the crown of the crown prince and the anointing horn.

The Royal Residence - Stiftsgården

Stiftsgården is the royal residence in Trondheim, Norway. It is centrally situated on the city’s most important thoroughfare, Munkegaten. At 140 rooms constituting 4000 m² (43000 ft²), it is possibly the largest wooden building in Northern Europe, and it has been used by royals and their guests since 1800

Munkholmen (The Monk’s Island)MunkholmenThe Monks Island

This was Trondheim´s execution ground in ancient times.Benedictine monks build a monastery on the isand very early in the 11th century, proably one of the first two monasteries in Scandinavia.In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress,later becoming a customs house.The most famous prisoner was the Danish Count Peter Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner on the island.Today this is a popular recreational area.

Kristiansten Fortress

Kristiansten Fortress.

This fort was build after the great city fire in 1681, and still proudly stands guard over the city centre.

It gives a spectacular view over Trondheim and it´s surroundings, the fjord and the mouintains.

From the strategic high ground the fortress played an important role in repelling invading Swedish forces in 1718.

Sverresborg Folk Museum

Around the ruins of King Sverre´s medieval castle is one of Norway´s largest open-air museums.

Sverresborg folk museum shows scenes from Trondheim and Trøndelag, amongst others a stave church, a dentist´s clinic, a school-room and a shop selling groceries and farm produce.

The exhibition «images of life» – showing life in the region over the last 150 years.

Ringve- the national museum of music and musical instruments

Ringve is Norway´s nationalmuseum for music and musical instruments, exhibitingcollections from all over the world.

The historic interiors create an unique backdrop, making the guided tour a completely unique experience.

Gamle bybro- The Old Town Bridge”The gate of fortune”

Gamle Bybro (The Old Town Bridge) crosses the Nidelva river from the south end of the main street Kjøpmannsgata connecting to the Trondheim neighborhood of Bakklandet. Gamle Bybro was constructed by Johan Caspar von Cicignon in 1681.

The wharves

The oldest of The Wharvesalong the River Nidelven is dated from the 18th century.The wharves on the seaward side by the canal are more recent, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Bakklandet – the old town

Bakklandet is a neighborhood of Trondheim, Norway. It lies on the east side of the river Nidelva between Bakke bridge and the old town bridge. The area is dominated by small, wooden houses and narrow streets.

Rockheim- the national live pop and rock centre

ROCKHEIM is our National Center of Pop and Rock Culture opened at the Pier in August 2010. It is located inside an old building, but characterized by an easily recognizable roof the shape of a box. "The box" is decorated by thousands of tiny lights that changes in a variety of colours and patterns, and is a landmark in the cityscape - especially in dark winter evenings.
