The

DHS Associateson the East Coast of the US gathered in Putnam in late October

for their annual meeting. The Associates were joined by their advisor, Connie Charette, DHS, and spent a day dedicated to Mary based on the theme “Mary’s Life in the Spirit”. The day’s agenda was filled with a flowing combination of prayer, reflection, presentations, mutual sharing of information, socialization and planning for the future. The Associates were pleased and proud to offer special recognition of Mary Mazur who had become a centenarian in August. A moment of silent prayer was also noted in remembrance of deceased, ailing and recuperating Associate program members. The Annual Assembly concluded with a meaningful prayer ritual featuring a Rose Ceremony and the renewal of Covenants by all Associates in attendance. More information about the DHS Associates is available from Sister Connie: [email protected] orDr. Diane Summa: [email protected].

Annhurst College andPutnam Catholic Academy

Alumni Associations held their annual general/all class reunions on the last two weekends of September respectively. The Annhurst alumni met in the Pavilion at the Provincial House in Putnam and celebrated their time together via a picnic/buffet prepared and hosted by Mary LaChance and the other officers of the Association while the PCA group chatted and reminisced while enjoying the world-class brunch at JD Cooper’s in Putnam. Both Associations honored alumni in attendance from special years and made plans and scheduled dates for their next annual gatherings: September 21, 2013 for the Annhurst group and September 29 for PCA. More information about each association and/or plans are available through our DHS Development Office.

Benefactor Profile........ Faithful benefactor and supporter, long time friend as well as Associate member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, Mrs. Irene Remillard, a native of Chicopee, MA, graduate of Our Lady of the Elms College and recipient of an MS degree in biology from Boston College, has touched the lives of hundreds of people through her chosen ministry in

retirement. Irene is a bereavement counselor, a role she chose after suffering the pain of the sudden loss of her husband George, victim of a heart attack, several years ago. Irene has brought her compassion and healing to the greater Chicopee area, working in collaboration with VNA’s, hospice and other outreach associations. Her ministry takes her into people’s lives and homes and is also carried out at Senior Centers. Her “Living Again Group” gathers ‘wounded’ folks and helps to guide them through extremely difficult times by allowing them to share their emotions at various levels in an open-ended system that they can attend as long as there is a need. In an effort to reach as many people as possible in spite of distances, Irene started her “phone-ministry” through which she stays in contact with families of deceased clients and acknowledges birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions of a multitude of friends and acquaintances. Her address book has over 1,000 listings.

Rememberingand

Celebrating PCA

The last Sunday of September featured a trip down memory lane for some 45 graduates of the former Putnam Catholic Academy, a secondary school that was a Putnam landmark from 1928-1977. The annual all-class reunion gathered around the brunch table at JD Cooper’s on Park Rd. in Putnam to remember and celebrate the academic and life knowledge received while attending that four year institution. Tales of life in the dorm, school dances with students from surrounding boarding and day schools, demanding teachers and profound and renewing spiritual experiences offered by the Daughters of the Holy Spirit who operated and staffed the facility, allowed one and all to relive precious moments and years. Receiving corsages and accompanying accolades were alumnae from the classes of 1952 and 1962 for their 60th and 50th anniversaries respectively. Next year’s reunion is scheduled for September 29th. More information may be obtained by emailing [email protected] or calling 860 928-0891 ext. 148.

Mrs. Remillard has received numerous awards and recognitions for her loving service to the community, including the distinguished Adam Marcienkiewicz Award from the City of Chicopee. She has been called “a real gem”, “a witness to a loving God,” “a small blessed package of a woman,” “a hero on the home front” and “a compassionate caregiver, respected for her role and enthusiasm.” Irene says she intends to continue this unique ministry “as long as possible...and to try to get others involved to do something for someone else rather than to feel sorry for themselves.” She states that she starts each session by asking the Holy Spirit to touch people through the words of others as they share their stories, heartbreaks and hopes. For Irene the hardest part of this ministry is that there isn’t enough time to reach everyone as she would want to while the easiest component is “the connection it offers me with people; that just comes naturally to me.” Irene ‘s contact with the DHS goes back a number of years. She had two siblings who were Daughters of the Holy Spirit, Srs. Beatrice and Alfred Morin, and she herself has been a covenanted associate member since 1998. If you would like to learn more about Irene and her ‘phone ministry’, feel free to give her a call at (413) 594-6092. She will be happy to add you to her contact list.

Celebrating Our DHS/Chile Connection A Fiesta celebrating 50 years of service in Chile and Peru took place at the Provincial House in Putnam in early September and featured a tribute to the 13 Sisters who responded to the 1961 call of the late Pope John XXIII for religious congregations to commit 10 percent of their members to minister in Latin

America.

Guests filled the Pavilion to near capacity as the accounts of the missionaries brought the group to laughter, to tears and to admiration of their experiences, struggles and successes in solidarity with the Chilean people as together they strove to advance a then 3rd world country to one of today’s highly developed nations. Tales of politics, persecution by dictator governments and of courage in adversity as well as heart-touching scenes with children in classrooms to comical misuse of a newly acquired language brought rounds of applause and cheers. A delightful abundant meal with typical foods such as empanadas, arroz con pollo and flan, and a meaningful bilingual celebration of Mass nourished body and soul of all participants. The photo features former missionaries: Row 1 left to right, Sisters Carla Hopkins, María Archambault, Row 2: Carmen Carbonneau, Eileen Smith, Marie Gertrude Laliberté, Row 3: Claire Roland Poulin and Jane Houtman, SB DHS and Jeanne Boutin.

The Christmas season found the Sisters at the Provincial House and surrounding areas joining forces to share the good news that “Jesus is the reason for the season” and to remind folks that CHRIST mas is all about giving and reaching out to others. A dozen Sisters participated with the local council of the Knights of Columbus in the city wide celebration of the Holiday Dazzle Light Parade on the last Sunday of November by singing Christmas Carols while riding on a brightly lit decorated float, and then all members of the DHS Community at the Provincial House and Health Care Center, along with friends and acquaintances, were invited to take part in the Christmas Giving Tree Project providing gifts for children from birth through age 12. The mountain of gifts was collected by TEEG (Thompson Ecumenical Empowerment Group) on December 19th for distribution to local families in need. All participants concurred that both activities deepened their appreciation of the true spirit of Christmas, energized them and increased their awareness of the deep significance of the unique satisfaction that comes from sharing and offering a guiding hand to friends and strangers alike.

JO ANN & PHILIP SAMPSON from Beverly, MA write: “Thank you for your devotion and influence on so many lives!”

CECILE & BOB ROBERGE from Jewett City note: “Our values began in school with the good Sisters. Thank you....”

WALTER & BARBARA WOJCIK pen these words from Marlborough, MA: “Love and thanks from both of us.”

THE GIUNTA FAMILY from Farmington, CT state: “In remembrance of the wonderful, stern “but dedicated Sisters/Teachers à l’Ecole Ste. Anne de Hartford...our mother and her 6 children studied there.”

MIMI SYKES of Rockland, ME shares: “I am ever so grateful for having the good Daughters show me the way of a strong faith during my early years. God bless you with grace and good health to continue your good works.”

BETTY CADIEUX of Swanton, VT says: :”God’s blessings to you in time of need. May the Lord keep you in his care.”

ROCCO PUGLIESE writes from Woodbury, CT: “I am pleased to make a contribution in honor of Sr. Gabrielle Angéline Desmarais, DHS, who taught me to play the piano and changed my life.”

CLAUDE COUTURE shares these thoughts from Chicopee, MA: “For all you do and have done, may God give you good health and happiness now and always.”

ARMAND BOUTIN pens these words from his home also in Chicopee, MA: “...to thank the Sisters for my education at Assumption School ....”

DR. MARK DOLLARD writes from Sterling, VA: “Your core values of honesty and fairness guided me to a successful life, understanding that all deserve compassion.”

❤ In Loving Memory ❤Sr. Simone Leblond (Thérèse Lucille), DHSMay 12, 1923-November 23, 2012

Sister Simone was called home to her Lord on Friday, November 23 at the Holy Spirit Health Care Center in Putnam where she had been in residence since 2010.

Simone was born in Trois Pistoles, Canada and entered the Congregation in 1940, making first profession in August of 1945. After earning her BA degree at Annhurst College, Sister dedicated her professional career in the field of education as a teacher and Principal. In 1987 she accepted a clerical position with the State of Connecticut and moved on from there to the position of Community Coordinator for the St. Clare Convent in Newport, RI where she ministered until her retirement to the DHS community in Manchester, CT where her loving personality endeared her to many of the local people and created lasting friendships. In 2003, Simone came to the Putnam area and resided at the Notre Dame Community until health problems occasioned her transfer to the Provincial House and Health Care Center. She will forever be remembered for her kind and gentle ways that always made others feel understood and respected.

Sr. Pearl Rita Veilleux (Simone De La Croix), DHSAugust 15, 1930- December 25, 2012

Sister Rita, as she liked to be called, spoke her final ‘fiat’ to her Lord on Christmas day as she responded to the call to begin life eternal.

Rita was born in Hartford, CT to Simeon and Hénédine Gagné Veilleux and attended local schools. She made first

profession in the Congregation of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in August of 1950 in St. Brieuc, France at the Mother House. Upon completing her undergraduate work at Diocesan Sisters College in Woodstock, CT, Sister Rita entered the classroom where she would serve in elementary schools in Connecticut and Massachusetts until transitioning into the field of Pastoral Care in 1978, ministering in the Waterbury and Hartford areas. Progressively failing health caused Rita to retire to the Provincial House Community and then to the Health Care Center in the years 2000 and 2006 respectively. Sister Rita Veilleux lives on in the hearts of all who knew her, especially her former students, as a kind and loving person with the gift of being attuned to the needs of others and the uncanny ability to anticipate the same.

The Victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre

At 9:35 a.m. on the morning of December 21st, one week to the hour after 26 innocent lives were stolen from our midst in an unspeakable and unconscionable act of violence by a lone shooter, the Sisters and Staff at the Provincial House united in solidarity with all in Connecticut, the country and the world to remember and honor these children and adults. After many years of hanging dormant in its tower on the front side of the building, the old bell was awakened and tolled as Mr. Gary Spieker, administrator of our Health Care Center, read each of the 26 names. A second reading was offered over the intercom, and Sr. Norma Bourdon, Provincial, tolled a simpler bell to assure that everyone inside the building had the opportunity to hear and to participate in

this solemn memorial. After a brief pause and in the name of compassion for all the ‘victims,’ Sister added two gongs for the perpetrator and his mother whom he also brutally assassinated. We remember. We pray. We brush away our tears and, we lift

up our eyes to the Lord of mercy and of life who gives new light and life to inspire all of us through His ‘little ones’ who have left an indelible mark on all of us.

Alicia Cortez Ramírez, SB DHSJanuary 8, 2013

Alicia Cortez Ramírez, member of the Secular Branch of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit entered life eternal on Tuesday, January 8 while being treated in a hospital in Iquique, Chile for pneumonia and related lung problems.

Alicia was the founding member of the Secular Branch of the DHS in Chile which is a part of the US region, having professed her initial and definitive vows in Chile in December of 2006. Doña Ramírez had a vibrant personality capped with a keen intelligence and a profound love of laughter. She was known for her deep loyalty to her God and to her friends and neighbors, always placing them before herself. She fiercely opposed oppression and cruelty of any kind and was a person of peace who lived her faith staunchly, challenging all around her to do the same. Alicia will be remembered and missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was laid to rest in her home town on January 10th, and memorial gifts are being sent to assist the family she leaves behind, as is the custom in Chile.

Sisters’ ResidentCouncil Officers New Officers were recently elected to the Resident Council at the service of the Sisters at the Holy Spirit Health Care Center in Putnam. After a two year term Sr. Imelda Lagacé passed

on the leadership role to Sr. Mary Ann Bisaillon, who had served as her Vice President . Replacing Sister Bisaillon is Sr. Flore Trudeau who will be assisted by Sister Marie Michaud who is taking over the Hospitality Chair position from Sr. Giselle Brouillard.

Claudia Bettez and Allison Hennequin, recreation director and social worker respectively, assisted the election process to the Council that is a mandated entity for all nursing facilities in the State of Connecticut. In their new roles the officers will help assure the residents voice in expressing good practices and in naming and identifying those areas that may need attention or improvement to ensure quality of life for all residents at the Center.

~ Together in the Spirit we transform today’s vision into tomorrow’s reality ~

To each and everyone of you who so faithfully offered us your spiritual, financial and moral support and were responsible for our reaching and surpassing our Project Goal for 2012, I say a humble yet gigantic THANK YOU! Because of your incredible donations totalling $87,837.55 we will be able to provide automatic beds and lift chairs to our Sisters in retirement and/or need and, as indicated in our project goal statement, to do some overdue minor refurbishing of the Sisters’ rooms and furnishings. YOU are indeed a concrete sign of God’s Providence for us, and the Daughters of the Holy Spirit of the Putnam Province are extremely grateful for the love and care you continue to shower upon us.

While the majority of retired religious never actually stop working (as illustrated on our cover page) they do continue to age and to encounter

human limitations, physical, emotional, psychological, etc., that, as we know all too well, can generate exorbitant costs that are difficult to cover by seniors on a very low and sometimes non-existent income. Consequently, in a concerted effort to give our Sisters in retirement the care they deserve and need and to continue to encourage and empower active Sisters to offer their non-reimbursed services to children and adults in need, we invite your participation in our 2013 Advancement Campaign. Our goal for this project is to raise a minimum of $75,000 that will be designated for these purposes.

In the name of the ‘Daughters,” I thank you for your perennial interest and supportive love and assure each of you of that you are remembered daily in the community and individual prayers of the Sisters.

Do feel free to contact me with your questions concerning any of our development/advancement projects and do consider stopping in to visit the Sisters and to experience YOUR generosity at work.

In the Spirit of Transformation,

Françoise G. Gauthier, PhDDirector Development/AdvancementDHS USA

Our Provincial House Community...Lives...Laughs...Works...Together.Rendering service and helping out in every possible way is a given for the 51 Daughters of the Holy Spirit in residence at the Provincial House. As our cover page illustrates, Sisters are involved in many detailed-oriented chores, tasks, ministries on a daily basis within this huge complex that they call ‘home’. We salute them as all for one and one for all. They live, laugh and work in numerous capacities including but not limited to Eucharistic ministers, drivers who transport others, receptionists, community bursar, assistant archivists, suppliers of goodies for kitchenettes, polisher of Holy Spirit emblem for administrators (specialization of our 101 year old Sr. Gilberte), printers, musicians, librarian, pastoral minister, community coordinators, dining room prep and napkin folders, sacristans, technology advisor, seamstress, guest room accommodations and linen closet upkeep, in-house hair dressing appointment planner, mail distributor, group prayer leader, mass card program processor, traveling companions, annals preparer, and resident council officers.
