WE’VE CHARTERED THE COURSE FOR A CLEANER NOW.

“We, and our owners Fjord1 and Flåm AS, are absolutely com-mitted to a long-term strategy that safeguards the spellbinding nature of Nærøyfjord and its sur-rounding waterways,” Sandvik said at the award ceremony in the Norwegian pavilion at SMM. “At the same time we want our pas-sengers to feel as connected to that habitat as possible – expe-riencing something on Vision of The Fjords that is not possible on my other vessel here.“With that in mind, we opted for a dual-fuel solution where-by we run diesel engines up to the entrance of the protected Nærøyfjord before switching to silent-running, emission-free electric power. We also chal-lenged the yard to create a special hull designed to minimise wake and thus reduce impact erosion on the vulnerable shoreline here.”The judges for Ship of the Year, which is run by the respected

Norwegian maritime publi-cation Skipsrevyen, were won over by Brødrene Aa’s bold design, but also by the vessel’s high-tech features such as its innovative propulsion system. This is based on a combina-tion of two 749-kW MAN main engines and two 150-kW Oswald electric motors, with ABB’s Onboard DC Grid sys-tem managing and controlling

the power between the diesel engines, propeller and charg-ing station. It’s a configuration capable of delivering a speed of 19.5 knots, slowing down to a leisurely 8 knots to allow passengers to immerse themselves in the UNESCO-listed beauty that surrounds them. Sandvik noted that the whole project had been defined by

collaboration, with an exten-sive list of suppliers including MANCRAFT, Simrad, ABB and Naviguiding, among oth-ers, uniting to tailor the best available solutions.Skipsrevyen runs its annual awards by asking readers for nominations, before an expert panel assesses vessels for the year’s standout craft. The initia-tive was launched in 1997.

Alfa Laval presents latest innovationsSMM 2016 is marking the 100th anniversary of Alfa Laval’s first marine separa-tor. The company says it is presenting more new solu-tions than ever before at this year’s fair.

Alfa Laval’s stand is showcas-ing the latest innovations for new fuels, energy efficiency, environmental compliance and lower operational costs, including new offerings in oil cleaning and service. Among the highlights is the new Alfa Laval hydraulic control oil (HCO) filter, as well as the skid-mounted Alfa Laval Pure-Ballast 3.1/300 Compact, the

smallest ballast water treat-ment system on the market for flows up to 300m3/h. Besides exhibiting new solu-tions, Alfa Laval is looking back at the one that preceded them all: Exactly 100 years ago, the US Navy asked Alfa Laval to de-velop a centrifugal oil-cleaning separator, which was delivered in 1917. To commemorate the anniversary, visitors are invited to a 20-minute stand tour each day at 16:30. Afterwards, a hap-py hour will begin with a signa-ture drink and the sounds of a period jazz band.

Reintjes presenting its down-angle gearbox series WVSAThe Germany-headquartered gearbox specialist Reintjes is back again at SMM in Ham-burg as a reliable partner in the field of propulsion and gearing technology. The in-ternational company is pre-senting its brand-new pro-duct range of down-angle gearbox series, called WVSA.

At the end of 2015, a down-angle prototype successfully complet-ed its first test runs at Reintjes facilities. The conical spur gears, which generate a shaft angle of 8° to 10° between the input and out-put shaft of this gearbox series, were put through an especially hard and intensive test. With a down-angle gearbox installed, the engine room can be engi-neered in a space-saving design, meaning a horizontal installation

of the main engine while the pro-peller shaft is sloped downwards by the inclination angle inside the gearbox, Reintjes says. Thus a shorter propeller shaft can be used, which leads to a smaller en-gine room.

Special attention was paid to the teeth design and contact pattern under load in order to reduce noise emissions – an important selection criteri-on for customers. Compared with commercially available

down-angle gearboxes, the noise values were already very satisfactory during initial measurements, according to Reintjes. The so-called bev-eloid gear design represented a special challenge in design, calculation and manufactur-ing, but all were managed in a proper manner, it says. The new Reintjes down-angle gearbox series comprises sizes WVSA 340, WVSA 740, and WVSA 1540 and is available at a power range from 250 to 3,250 kW and reduction ratio of 1.5 to 4. Further important features include the alumini-um housing and the shaft angle of 8° to 10° that is essential for down-angle gearboxes.

Strategic Marine selects MTU gas engines Representatives of the Singa- porean shipyard Strategic Marine and Rolls-Royce have signed a contract at SMM for delivery of four MTU gas en-gines for two new 70m-long catamarans for the Dutch shipping company Doeksen. The brand MTU is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Knut Müller, head of the Marine and Government Business Divi-sion at MTU, said: “We would like to express our thanks to our long-standing partners Strate-gic Marine and Doeksen for the trust they have placed in our new technologies, and are de-lighted that the MTU gas engine has been so well received by the market.” In addition to the Dutch ferries, MTU gas engines will be used to power a new harbour tug being built by Damen for the

shipping company Svitzer and a new ferry on Lake Constance operated by the local utility, Stadtwerke Konstanz. The two aluminium catamarans are to operate ferry services by Doeksen for as many as 66 ve-hicles and 599 passengers be-tween the Dutch mainland and the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland, from 2018. Richard de Vries, head of operations at Doeksen, said: “Particularly on the sensitive Wadden Sea, which has been declared worthy of protection, it is very impor-tant for us that ships are oper-ated in an extremely environ-mentally friendly manner. The MTU engines therefore were the right choice for us, also be-cause of their dynamic accelera-tion behaviour.”

ABB launches new Azipod propulsion modelABB is launching a new Azipod propulsion unit that it says is up to 10% more efficient than previous versions. Azipod pro-pulsion is the shipping indus-try’s leading podded electric propulsion system, and ABB believes the improved effi-ciency and bollard pull will ex-pand its appeal beyond estab- lished strong markets.

The new linear flow Azipod XL achieves this jump in efficiency by introducing a nozzle with stator plates, which directs the water flow from the propeller to reduce the turbulence and energy loss, and give the opti-mum thrust for the vessel. The Azipod XL represents the biggest jump in the systems’ fuel efficiency in recent years. To put it in perspective, if the newest model replaced all existing Azi-pod units, it would save the ship-ping industry 2.2 million tonnes of fuel and 7 million tonnes of CO2 over the next 25 years. It has been a quarter of a century since the first installation of an Azipod unit, and in that time they have racked up more than 12 million running hours, saving 700,000 tonnes of fuel in the process.“The new Azipod XL is com-pletely in step with the needs

of the maritime industry. Ship-owners always want solutions that improve their bottom line, while more stringent emission regulations are pushing opera-tors to utilise the most efficient propulsion system possible,” said Juha Koskela, managing director of ABB’s Marine and Ports business. One of the strengths of the modifications is that they are relatively simple. Azimuth propulsion works by drawing water into the propeller and pulling the vessel, therefore the addition of a nozzle will opti-mise the water flow as it leaves the propeller.

Wärtsilä presents its “Visions of Future Shipping”Wärtsilä has set out its visions of the shipping industry’s future. The com-pany’s look into its crystal ball was prompted by the inevitable effect that growing global energy demand and increasingly stringent environmental legislation to combat climate change will have on the shipping sector.

In addition, Wärtsilä has assessed various emerging trends that represent both chal-lenges and opportunities for the future of shipping, such as sharing economies, new business models enabled by the digital uni-verse, the huge growth in energy storage ca-pacity and affordable “green” energy sources. “We accept the challenges created by the developments currently taking place. Wärtsilä is increasing its speed of rein-vention, not just internally but in coop-eration with our customers and partners so that the industry can be assured of having the technologies ready and avail-able to meet the new requirements,” said

Roger Holm, president of Wärtsilä Ma-rine Solutions. In its “Visions of Future Shipping” paper, Wärtsilä presents various scenarios that could shape the way shipping companies operate in the future. These scenarios have been designated as follows:

1 CONVOYBy taking advantage of advanced controls and communication between autono-mous components, systems and vessels, shipping fleets could be operated in con-voys. It is estimated that savings of up to 30% could be achieved by ships trailing in each other’s wake. Furthermore, through the use of system autonomy, artificial intelligence and ad-vanced connectivity, the trailing ships might be operable with fewer crew mem-bers. Advanced communication technolo-gies will also rapidly increase the sharing of information, which will save time and optimise the allocation of cargo to vessels.

2 ZERO – Floating distribution hubsAnother scenario entails artificial islands along main shipping routes producing emissions-free fuels from “green” solar or wind energy sources. Clean energy pro-duction is becoming a global priority, and its influence on the shipping industry is expected to increase in the near future.

3 Exergo – Unlimited energy storageLarge investments will drive energy stor-age using battery technology. Wärtsilä believes that battery energy density will increase substantially in the coming years, allowing ships to operate silently and with no exhaust emissions in sensitive areas.

4 Z3 – Green energyTo provide reliable, emissions-free power without upfront investment, highly reliable energy sources and monitoring from shore via advanced connectivity will be required. This concept envisions the supply of ener-gy for propulsion on an “as you go” basis.

5 “LIITOS – Working together”For efficient cargo sharing, access to the same information by all global operators would ensure, for example, that no con-tainer ship sails cargo-free. This sharing of assets could be achieved by use of a digital tool.

6 “ Bean to cup – Manufacturing en route”

Factory ships may one day be manufactur-ing while transporting materials from one market to another. Apart from saving valu-able time, this could have substantial eco-nomic benefits. For example, coffee beans being transported to Europe and Asia from

South America could be processed during the voyage so that the finished product is available immediately upon the ship’s arriv-

al in port. Similarly, the quality of seasonal crops could be enhanced by having the ship begin processing soon after harvesting.

CONNECTING TO THE FUTUREThe new Wärtsilä Sea-Master system uses digital technology to maximize uptime and reduce lifecycle costs of vessel shaft lines, helping you connect the dots whatever the challenge. Read more at wärtsilä.com.

SMM DAILY NEWS MARITIME 4.0

Transparency is t he key to successThe unique concept of SISHIP EcoMAIN from Siemens is its integral approach to collecting and consolidating operational ship data from different system suppliers and in heterogeneous data formats in order to supply superior applications via a simple and standardised interface.

EcoMAIN allows data exchange between different proprietary applications. Each application may return output data to the EcoMAIN database via the standard inter-face, which can be an input for other appli-cations if needed. The applications repre-sent real customer value by optimising ship operation and saving operational costs. These applications also become an inte-grated part of EcoMAIN even if they are

third-party products. The flexible Eco-MAIN data platform allows the customer to install several applications by minimising installation costs. The EcoMAIN principle allows an open and modular system that encourages cus-tomer input for future applications. Fur-thermore, EcoMAIN offers a fleet man-agement system for transmission of the operational ships’ key data to the owner’s headquarters for data analysis and optimi-sation of the entire fleet.Shipowners and ship operators rely on numerous software and hardware systems to answer ever more complex challenges in their daily business. With EcoMAIN, they can use data from any number of systems on board in a uniform

platform to make better decisions and save costs.

The challenge: prepare ship data for process analysis and management decisionsToday ships use numerous sophisticated installations and systems on board, each delivering data on their status, perfor-mance and efficiency. However, these data are of a proprietary, inconsistent nature and therefore cannot be used for process optimisation. Furthermore, it is impossi-ble to compare the performance of similar ships under different circumstances or to discover best practices for competitive-ness or best operational results within an entire fleet.

EcoMAIN allows data exchange between different proprietary applications

SMM Daily News | 8 September 2016 | No 3 17

Transparency is t he key to successThe solution: EcoMAIN – the intelli-gent intelligence systemProviding information in a consistent for-mat is the basic idea of EcoMAIN. To this end, EcoMAIN collects the entire ship operational data and consolidates and stores them in a database. By integrating data via modular and flex-ible interfaces (industrial standards such as Mod-bus, NMEA, Profibus, OPC, etc.), Eco-MAIN can provide data access for ana- lysis regardless of the supplier of the original systems.

Any actual and historical data may be retrieved from this database with the

their ships by optimis-ing operations.

EcoMAIN is based on the iPhone/app principle, and applications will be installed in vir-tual machines on

an EcoMAIN web/application server. A unique EcoMAIN graphical user inter-face (GUI) serves to visualise the apps and may be configured according to in-dividual needs. Apps such as the data ex-plorer can be used to select and display individual data in a graphical format for immediate fault-tracking on board or in a table for further analysis ashore. For data security reasons, the system is pro-tected by a user management and login procedure. In addition, onboard and ashore (fleet management) web clients are served by the EcoMAIN web server via an encrypted Internet connection. The versatile system is open for future applications introduced by customers or developed by Siemens.

SMM DAILY NEWS OFFSHORE DIALOGUE

Offshore industry – quo vadis?

High-calibre speakers, forward-looking topics, innovative solutions: Today the offshore sector is meeting at SMM. The keynote speaker of the Offshore Dia- logue will be Steve Robertson, director

(HQ & Research Centre) at Douglas-West-wood.

It has been barely two years since the crude oil price hit rock bottom and the offshore

industry, especially the oil and gas segment, suffered a severe blow. Since then, business has been more or less stagnant. The super majors have cut investments. Shipbuilders, suppliers and associated services are largely sitting idle. But there are new signs of a pos-sible upward trend: The 2016 “Offshore Support Vessel Global Market Outlook” published by the Indian market research organisation Wise Guy Reports expects the offshore supply vessel (OSV) market to grow 5.7% annually, reaching a volume of USD 43.07 billion by 2022.

Raising the shipbuilding industry’s hopesEspecially the wind energy and subsea min-ing segments are raising the shipbuilding industry’s hopes. Both are in great need of specialised ships and advanced technologies. But what exactly does the market need to take off? What conditions must be met for the up-swing to come? And how does digitalisation figure in this equation? SMM will help to give answers to these and many other questions. Its Offshore Dialogue conference will spend all of today looking into these matters, with high-calibre speakers from the business and science worlds leading the discussion.

Innovation wanted“It is only through the most innovative tech-nologies that we will be able to secure our leading international position and enter into emerging markets successfully,” said Uwe Beckmeyer, parliamentary secretary at Ger-many’s Federal Ministry for Economic Af-fairs and Energy (BMWi), which is sponsor-ing the conference. “It is our goal to support the maritime sector in developing new tech-nologies that are economically attractive. To accomplish this, the maritime industry must cooperate closely with the offshore wind sector and the scientific community,” added Beckmeyer, the German government’s co-ordinator for the maritime industry. He will open the conference with a keynote address.

Focus on forward-looking topicsThe conference on September 8th is titled “Offshore industry – quo vadis?” and con-sists of three panel discussions. The first segment, headed “Subsea Technology – Experience and Challenges”, will address the prospects of subsea mining and subsea gas installations. Remotely operated towed seafloor vehicles will be presented – ma-chines towed by surface craft. They repre-sent an alternative approach to mining raw materials from subsea deposits. Another key technology to be discussed during the conference is heavy-lift cranes. The featured speakers include Baard Alsaker,

vice president of R&D and technology at MacGregor, a global offshore supplier, and Basil Zweifel, segment head of oil and gas production at MAN.

Synergies between HSE standardsThe section “Health, Safety & Environment – The Human Factor” will focus on special-ised offshore vessels promising enhanced

safety at sea. Is it possible to leverage syner-gies between HSE standards of the oil and gas and offshore wind industries? The panel discussion will also address specialised train-ing for employees working in the demand-ing offshore sector, as well as the question whether offshore work will be performed from fixed platforms or service vessels in fu-ture. Sybrand Boschma, offshore specialist at the Dutch shipbuilding group Damen, and Michael McDonald, general manager at the leading technology consultancy FORCE, headquartered in Denmark, will provide val-uable insight.

Digitalisation offshore 4.0The third expert panel, titled “Digitalisation Offshore 4.0 – Challenge and Opportunity”, will explore some future perspectives for the industry. “Big data”, smart maintenance con-cepts, optimised logistics for offshore wind farms, and cyber security for the offshore sector will be key items on the agenda. Juan Gallego, remote diagnostics expert at the Swedish component manufacturer SKF, will represent the practical side. The scientific as-pects will be covered by Prof Dr Carlos Jahn, head of the Fraunhofer Centre for Maritime Logistics and Services, as a top-level expert. Kenneth Richardson, executive vice presi-dent of the Global Offshore division of ABS, will share his views from the perspective of a leading classification society.

SMM DAILY NEWS PROPULSION

Siemens to supply SISHIP eSiPOD propulsion for Saga Cruises shipSiemens has been chosen to equip the first newbuild cruise liner for the Bri-tish-based operator Saga Cruises under contract to German shipbuilder Meyer Werft. The awarded package includes a SISHIP eSiPOD propulsion system as well as a power and distribution plant. To be delivered in the summer of 2019, the 56,850gt cruise ship will be 236m long, 31.2m wide and have a capacity of 999 passengers. The contract includes an op-tion to equip one additional cruise liner potentially due for delivery in 2021.

The major benefit of the SISHIP eSiPOD is its high overall efficiency resulting from the combination of a compact, hydrodynamically optimised design and an efficient perma-nent-excited synchronous motor, Siemens says. The propulsion motor is integrated into a pod-shaped housing located outside the ship’s hull and enables full 360° steering angle. With the combination of the SISHIP eSiPOD and SISHIP Drive MV solution, Siemens is able to provide what it says is a

perfectly balanced integrated propulsion system for this cruise ship with improved propulsion efficiency and manoeuvrability. In addition, the low-noise and low-vibra-tion operation of the propeller motors make them particularly suited for the yacht, pas-senger and cruise ship segment.

The reliable power supply of the ship is guaranteed by the integrated power plant system SISHIP Power MV. This comprises four generators with a total electrical out-put of 21 MW. The NxAIR medium-volt-age switchgear takes care of efficient and safe power distribution. The power and propulsion plant is internally controlled and monitored by the Siemens integrat-ed protection systems such as the Power Plant Protection (PPP), Generator Power Adaption System (GPA) and Propulsion Control System (PCS). The integrated Siemens SISHIP solutions help to increase the overall efficiency and reliability of the cruise ship, reduce fuel consumption and thus drive down operating costs.Siemens is also responsible for project managing, engineering and commission-ing of the entire diesel-electric propulsion system.

Women have played only a minor role in shipping, shipbuilding and related areas to date. But decision-makers in the in-dustries are beginning to recognise their potential in view of the current shortage of skilled workers. Women are a major focus at SMM’s Maritime Career Market. A highlight of the event is presentation of the Personality of the Year 2016 award by the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA).

More women means more profit, as shown in a study by the Peterson Institute in Washing-ton published in February 2016. The more women a company employs in middle and senior management, the better its earnings. The rule of thumb is that an increase in female executives from zero to 30% boosts profitabil-ity by 15%. The study is based on responses by nearly 22,000 companies in 91 countries. The Maritime Career Market, to be held at SMM tomorrow, September 9th, puts the spotlight on career opportunities for wom-

en. Shipbuilding companies, equipment sup-pliers and port companies are feeling the de-mographic change and desperately seeking skilled workers, executives and young talent – and that is precisely where women come in. Germany’s Federal Ministry of Trans-

port and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has recognised the importance of this subject and set a clear signal – the recently adopted National Ports Concept explicitly recognises as an ongoing task the need to “increase the percentage of women employed at ports”.The Maritime Career Market is intended to help women in their vocational development. “It’s a very good sign that this subject is be-ing addressed at an industry fair that is more aimed at technical matters,” said Dagmar Klenk, president of WISTA Germany. The organisation has been involved for more than 40 years in women’s international networking in the maritime industries. If it goes well, she added, the Maritime Career Market could be-come a fantastic cooperation opportunity for the women and companies concerned.

WISTA award in a prestigious settingWISTA has played a part at SMM for many years, holding an evening reception for its international members attending SMM as exhibitors or trade visitors. A special

highlight is planned again this year: WISTA Germany will present the Personality of the Year 2016 award at SMM. “Our aim with this award is to highlight female personalities who have an exemplary function in career and commitment in the maritime industries,” re-marked Klenk, who works in the management of a Hamburg shipping company. “We made a deliberate choice to present this award at the leading global fair SMM to increase awareness of our network in this prestigious setting.”

Attractive prospects for female applicantsPromotion of young talent is another key fac-tor at the Maritime Career Market – school and university students have a unique oppor-tunity tomorrow to get first-hand information about training and career paths in the mar-itime industries. The event specifically ad-dresses girls with an interest in the industries. “Women can get an impression of the career opportunities in the maritime industries here at the world’s leading maritime industries fair,” said Carin Steinbach, deputy project di-rector for SMM. Steinbach is closely involved with maritime subjects and joined Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH, the fair’s or-ganiser, in 2001. She notes that many of the 2,100 SMM exhibitors are attractive employ-ers with good prospects for trainees, qualified staff, skilled workers and management execu-tives. A good example of the business power prospects for women in a largely male domain is Angeliki Frangou, chairman and CEO of Navios Maritime Holdings. She has made it to the 16th position in the prestigious “Top 100 Influential People in Shipping” published by Lloyd’s List in 2015.

Klenk enthusiastically recommends that women go into the maritime industries. “An exciting and varied field of work, full of fascinating opportunities,” she said. “The maritime industries have such a variety of activities – in shipping companies on shore or at sea, in the equipment supply industry, and in finance.” And they are highly inter-national.More women in the maritime industries – that can be a win-win situation for compa-nies and applicants.

The Maritime Career Market, to be held at SMM tomorrow, September 9th, is the ideal platform for match-ing jobs with applicants, and for the presentation of training and educa-tion opportunities in the maritime industries. Companies and institu-tions can introduce themselves and their offers at a dedicated jobs mar-ket. For more information, please visit: www.smm-hamburg.com/mcm

DMCA highlighting Dubai’s transition to global maritime hubThe Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) is underlining Dubai‘s pioneer- ing experience in transitioning into a leading global maritime hub at SMM 2016.

With Dubai Maritime Week 2016 rapidly approaching (October 30th to Novem-ber 3rd), DMCA says it is highlighting the emirate’s smart transformation initi-atives, efforts to increase local maritime competitiveness, and Dubai as a maritime gateway to global trade. It is specifically focusing on its Maritime Sector Strategy (MSS), the driving force behind Dubai’s strategies to promote, develop and reg-ulate the maritime sector to make the emirate one of the world’s best maritime capitals by 2020.Dubai’s maritime competitiveness is also a highlight of DMCA’s participation in

SMM 2016, in addition to the emirate’s strategic location between East and West, advanced legal and legislative systems and infrastructure, investment-friendly envi-ronment, world-class facilities, maritime and logistics services, modern ports, and integrated maritime safety system. These components are supported by the gov-ernment’s strategy promoting innovation, creativity and excellence, DMCA points out.DMCA is showcasing numerous initia-tives that demonstrate what it says is the emirate’s innovative approach to sustain-ing its status. These include: the new Dubai Maritime Cluster Office, opened in June; Dubai Maritime Agenda; Mari-time Creativity Lab; Maritime Advisory Council; Dubai Maritime Training Cen-tre; Smart Marine Services Platform; and Dubai Maritime Intelligence. All of these,

DMCA says, represent fundamental pil-lars to strengthen the confidence of re-gional and international investors in the local maritime environment and improve the sector’s performance, safety, efficien-cy, and competitiveness.Amer Ali, executive director of DMCA, remarked: “SMM 2016 and other global maritime events serve as ideal platforms to exchange knowledge, experiences and best practices with international decision- makers and stakeholders. Dubai is an im-portant gateway to maritime trade among Asian, European and MENA markets. SMM will enable investors, shipowners and stakeholders from Germany and the rest of the world to gain a deeper under-standing of Dubai’s strengths, investment opportunities and promising prospects. Such events are vital for the maritime in-dustry.”

Electronic archives for Ship&Offshore, Schiff&HafenAt this year’s SMM, the Hamburg-based DVV Media Group’s maritime publica-tions Ship&Offshore and Schiff&Hafen are introducing their new database for back issues dating from 2010.

Available at www.maritime-archives.com, the database contains articles on shipping as well as maritime and offshore technologies, acces-sible in a user-friendly way. One of the challenges that profession-als face today is the rapid increase in the amount of published information. The DVV Media maritime database helps in finding relevant articles quickly and ef-ficiently. Modern search technology en-ables queries similar to those in Internet search engines such as Google or Bing. Moreover, the user-friendly interface al-lows advanced searches, e.g., for a specific author or time frame. The use of Boolean operators (and, or), wildcards and phrase queries is possible as well. The single

view of each article includes a short de-scription and all necessary metadata for citation. Search terms are highlighted in hit lists and single views. Articles can be downloaded and opened on any computing device, be it desktop PC,

laptop, tablet or smartphone. SMM visitors are welcome to test the database and per-form searches at the DVV Media stand.

Becker Marine Systems presents COBRA battery systemDespite the ongoing global shipping crisis, Becker Marine Systems, which bills itself as “the world market leader for high-per-formance rudders and energy-saving so-lutions in the field of manoeuvring tech-nology”, says it’s appearing at SMM 2016 with a good order situation. The Ham-burg-based company is presenting a new product line, the Compact Battery Rack (COBRA) battery system, at the fair.

Low-cost, compact and easy to install on board, COBRA is now in the test phase and can be delivered as an independent product or in combination with hybrid drives starting in summer 2017. Initial orders for passenger ferries have already been placed for this tech-nology based on lithium-ion cells. Use in in-ternal products such as the LNG PowerPac is also possible and being planned.“We have successfully managed to trans-fer a tried-and-tested e-mobility appli-cation to the maritime world,” said Dirk

Lehmann, co-managing director of Becker Marine Systems.

The world’s largest container ships continue to operate using full spade rudders from Becker Marine Systems. “The Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding shipyard in China has ordered our Becker Twist Rudder with a rudder sur-face of 100m2 for six 21,000-TEU container ships,” reported Lehmann and Henning Kuhl-mann, also co-managing director. In addition, major orders have been placed for the Becker Performance Package, com-prising a Becker Twist Rudder with Rud-der Bulb and Becker Mewis Duct Twisted. At its two separate SMM stands, Becker Marine Systems is showing fairgoers its suc-cessful marriage of economy and ecology. In addition to the Manoeuvring Systems and Energy-Saving-Devices product lines, there is the LNG Hybrid Concepts division. The company has also developed a number of offerings for the use of low-emission LNG.

Launch of SKF Dynamic Stabiliser Cover aimed at reducing dragThe new SKF Dynamic Stabiliser Cover (DSC), designed to reduce drag and im-prove the efficiency of passenger vessels equipped with SKF retractable fin stabil- isers types S and Z, has been launched at SMM 2016.

The use of fin stabilisers to control rolling motions has resulted in significant im-provements to passenger comfort and safe-ty in a wide range of vessels, notes Gothen-burg-based SKF. Retractable designs, such as the SKF retractable fin stabiliser types S and Z, reduce the flow resistance signif-icantly. Now SKF engineers have found a smart way to further reduce the flow re-sistance associated with this design, while

retaining all its other benefits, SKF says. When a vessel is in motion, the fin box opening in the side of the hull creates tur-bulence, increasing drag on the vessel. With operating efficiency posing a high priority for customers, SKF wanted to find a way to minimise the resistance even more and thereby decrease fuel consumption. The new SKF DSC uses two specially shaped air cushions, fitted to the top and bottom of the fin box with small steel rails. It will be available as an option for new ves-sels using all sizes of SKF retractable fin sta-bilisers, and it is also possible to retrofit the system on existing fin installations.

Hamburg´s culinary scene: fishHamburg has more star-rated restau-rants than ever. And yet the city’s young, dedicated food scene has a preference for simplicity, celebrating artisan food and beverages from regional, seasonal and eco-friendly sources – first and fore-most fish. The editors of the SMM Daily News are presenting ten fish restaurants today – there should be something for every taste!

JellyfishThe Jellyfish supports sustainable fishing and uses solely wild and line-caught fish and seafood. One of Hamburg’s best fish and seafood restaurants, it has won sever-al awards for its innovative cuisine. Alt Hamburger Aalspeicher in the historic Deichstrasse. The Eismann family has run this traditional Hamburg restaurant for

more than 30 years. Over the past decades, the 16th-century building overlooking the Nikolaifleet canal has become one of the top destinations for lovers of traditionally prepared fish. Deichstrasse 43 (Altstadt) Tel: +49 (0)40 36 29 90 www.aalspeicher.de

Ponton Op’n BullnThe Ponton Op’n Bullen is connected to the mainland by a gangway. Here you can meet a mixed crowd. Residents of the Blankenese district and other Hamburg locals, as well as blow-ins and tourists can be seen gath-ering here for coffee and cake or classics such as fried fish Hamburg-style, labskaus or pickled herring sandwiches. Guests can enjoy arguably the most beautiful sunset in the city – or simply the stunning view of the port with its passing container ships and small yachts.

Three questions for...

The German Maritime Export Initiative, or GeMaX for short, was founded a little over two years ago. What’s it all about? We want to boost the presence of German manufactur-ers from the shipbuilding suppliers market in all relevant foreign markets, improve their chances of success and es-tablish GeMaX as a mark of “excellence made in Germa-ny”. Our ten founding members had the impression that competitors from other countries were considerably bet-ter positioned in this regard. Long-term German project financing and quality German products are coveted by shipowners and offshore marine technology contractors worldwide, so it made sense to create a joint instrument that benefits all participating parties. The number of com-panies that have joined our initiative currently numbers 23 already, by the way, including the Kf W IPEX-Bank – so far the only member from the banking sector – two ship-yards, two design offices and the industry’s leading Ger-man suppliers. We’re seeking further, continual additions in the coming months.

Please give us some insight into the practical work of GeMaX.I’d be happy to. First of all I’d like to emphasise that while GeMaX is being promoted by the VSM (German Ship-building and Ocean Industries Association), participation isn’t contingent on being a member of the association. We want to position GeMaX as an independent brand. Ge-MaX is at the disposal of all maritime industry companies in Germany as an active and attractive export promotion instrument. At the moment we’re working on concluding initial ref-erence projects. As you know, the global shipbuilding industry now finds itself in a serious crisis, and the few existing projects are proceeding very slowly. Particularly through the combination with financing, which isn’t easy to get nowadays, there’s a good chance to place our mem-bers on the makers list of projects that they wouldn’t get on otherwise. Our focus for the time being is on standard ships, for example large container freighters; among the current projects are other market segments too, though, such as floating production systems, gas tankers and ferries since they’re very equipment-intensive. To promote this, we’re conducting a lot of target-market events such as delega-tion visits and talks in countries such as Canada, Iran, In-dia and Indonesia.

What role does SMM 2016 play for you?As a relatively new initiative, we’re now aiming at raising the profile of GeMaX and establishing it as a platform for supplier-based financing. Because SMM is so highly international, it’s an ideal stage and the primary focus of our marketing activities this year. Please visit us at VSM’s Stand 205 in Hall B4.
