After lengthy ban, Jamaican mangoes headed for US market

K I N G STO N , J a m a i c a _ U.S. a g r i c u l t u r e offi cials have cleared the way for the export of J a m a i c a n mangoes to the United

States.

Derek Kellier is Jamaica’s acting agriculture minister. He said Monday that the ministry ``will do everything in its power to ensure that mango farmers and exports’’ meet requirements for continental U.S. shipments to begin starting Oct. 20.

Jamaica last supplied the juicy, yellow-orange fruit to the U.S. market in the 1980s. It stopped when the U.S. banned a fumigant used to deter fruit fl ies.

As a condition of entry, Jamaican mangoes must now be inspected and found free of certain fruit fl ies, scale insects and diseases. U.S. shipments must also have a document known as a phytosanitary certifi cate.

Jamaica’s mango season begins in December. Local mango varieties include Julie, Bombay, and No. 11

Prime Minister says Haiti to hold long overdue elections by early next year

NEW YORK _ Haitian Prime M i n i s t e r L a u r e n t L a m o t h e says the country will hold long o v e r d u e elections no later than early next

year.

Lamothe says the country will hold elections ``as soon as possible’’ in the new year if several opposition lawmakers don’t agree to help hold the vote before their mandates expire early next year.

Lamothe says six senators have been holding Haiti ``hostage.’’ But they won’t be able to do so anymore once their terms end in mid-January. Lamothe says he also hopes that the offi cials will approve an electoral law before then, which will pave the way for the legislative election that is three years late.

The expiration of their terms will dissolve Parliament. Martelly will then rule by decree.

Lamothe said the vote will be held either before year’s end or in the fi rst three months of next year.

Lamothe made the remarks in an interview Tuesday.

Bahamas at UN: Controlling illegal immigration ‘central to our

survivability as a country’

The foreign minister of the Bahamas says his country is determined to control illegal i m m i g r a t i o n , saying allowing it to balloon would be a ``recipe for civil strife.’’

Frederick Mitchell struck a tough tone during his speech Tuesday at the U.N. General Assembly, less than two weeks after his government announced a measure making it harder for migrants to work in the island chain.

The Caribbean country is considering additional restrictions as part of a plan that appears mostly aimed at large numbers of Haitians who have settled there.

Mitchell said controlling illegal immigration in the Bahamas is ``central to our survivability as a country.’’ He added that unchecked immigration has been a ``recipe for civil strife’’ in other countries and ``we do not intend for that to happen to us.’’

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti _ A large crowd of supporters of former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide marched Tuesday through the capital on the anniversary of a 1991 military coup that ousted the country’s fi rst democratically elected leader.

Thousands of supporters tried to march from the church where Aristide led services as a Catholic priest to his house. But police fi red water cannons and tear gas to disperse them before they arrived at the home.

The march marked the date that

the military ousted Aristide less than a year into his fi rst term as president. It comes amid fears he will be arrested for failing to heed a court summons to testify in a corruption case.

An investigative judge issued an arrest warrant in August after the former president did not attend a hearing looking into allegations that include money laundering during his time in offi ce. Aristide’s lawyer has said the summons was not properly served and he has sought to quash the warrant.

Haitian police have been stationed outside the walls of Aristide’s home but so far have not moved to carry out the warrant.

The former president, who was ousted again in a violent rebellion in 2004, has rarely ventured outside his home since returning from exile in South Africa in 2011.

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaican detectives are investigating the poisoning death of a police com-mander.

A coroner’s jury inquest ruled this week that Dayton Henry was “systematically’’ poisoned. The former head of the Clarendon police division died at a hospital in May 2012. Local media say a poison used to exterminate rats

was found in his system.

It’s unclear why it took more than two years to convene a sev-en-member coroner’s jury for the inquest into Henry’s death.

On Wednesday, Assistant Police Commissioner Devon Watkis said detectives have “initiated another phase’’ of their investigation now that the inquest is done. A police statement says investigators are appealing for “patience and sup-port.’’

Relatively few murders are solved in Jamaica. A U.S. State Depart-ment report says the conviction rate for homicides is 5 per cent.

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaica's justice minister said Tuesday that legislation has been drafted to decriminalize marijuana on the Caribbean island where the drug has been pervasive but prohibit-ed for a century.

Mark Golding told reporters that lawmakers should make posses-sion of 2 ounces or less a petty

offence before the end of 2014. He also expects decriminalization for religious purposes to be au-thorized by then, allowing adher-ents of the homegrown Rastafar-ian spiritual movement to ritually smoke marijuana, which they consider a “holy herb,'' without fear of arrest.

Golding said it will take longer to

agree on more complex changes to Jamaica's Dangerous Drugs Act needed to spur a medical marijuana and cannabis re-search sector. He said Jamaica, where scientists developed a cannabis-derived medication to treat glaucoma decades ago, is “well-positioned to be a forerun-ner'' in efforts to research thera-peutic uses of the plant.

As Jamaica advances marijuana decriminalization, the govern-ment is committed to battling drug traffi ckers, Golding stressed. He said keeping marijuana away from children, the internation-al black market and organized crime will be a top priority.

Previous efforts to decriminal-ize marijuana, or “ganja'' as it is largely known in Jamaica, failed to advance because Jamaican offi cials feared they would violate international treaties and bring sanctions from Washington. But those concerns have eased now

that a number of nations and some U.S. states have relaxed marijuana laws.

Golding said the regulatory framework needed for a medical marijuana and scientifi c research industry in Jamaica is still being hashed over. Setting maximum limits on pot cultivation is not an-ticipated, he said, but the govern-ment wants to ensure that small farmers “are not excluded and it does not just become something exclusively for major capital-inten-sive investors.''

Official urges Jamaicans to destroy bug breeding sites as painful mosquito borne virus spreads

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Ja-maica's health minister said Sunday that the gov-ernment is doing all it can to combat a newly arrived mosquito-borne virus that is increasingly disrupting life and cutting productivity on the Caribbean island.

In a national address carried on television and radio, Fen-ton Ferguson said the chi-kungunya virus is spreading across Jamaica and “every-one is susceptible.''

“We are aware of the impact

this is having on productivity and attendance at school and work and ask employers to be compassionate and assist their staff through this diffi cult period,'' Ferguson said.

It's a rarely fatal but typical-ly very painful viral illness that has advanced rapidly through the Caribbean and parts of Latin America after local transmission started in the tiny French dependency of St. Martin late last year, likely introduced by an infect-ed air traveller. Apparently hardest hit has been the Dominican Republic, with half the cases reported in the Americas.

In recent days, the mosqui-to-borne virus with no cure or vaccine has been in-creasingly sickening people

in Jamaica, perhaps most severely in the southeastern parish of St. Thomas.

“Schools, business, church-es, farms and entire commu-nities in St. Thomas continue to report ever mounting cas-es of persons ill with chiku-ngunya, some communities with over half the population affected,'' said opposition offi cial Delano Seiveright before the health minister's speech.

Confi rmed cases in Jamai-ca are few so far, but there are many signs that the real number of sickened people is far higher than the offi cial tally. Laboratories have only been able to confi rm a small portion of people who fall ill because many patients don't bother seeking care so their cases go unrecorded. Some

private doctors are also not reporting patients to the gov-ernment, according to the health ministry.

Some Jamaicans are blast-ing the government for what they believe is a sluggish response to a public health threat they knew was on the way. Fenton asserts the government was prepared and is doing all it can to swat down the virus but the “ex-pectation is for chikungun-ya cases to spike and then trend down'' as more people become immune. People de-velop immunity after getting infected. ___ By David McFadden

WASHINGTON _ The parents of Michael Brown said Saturday in an interview with The Associated Press that they were unmoved by the apology given by the Ferguson, Missouri, police chief weeks after their unarmed 18-year-old son was killed by a police officer.

Brown's mother, Lesley McSpad-den, said, “Yes,'' when asked if Chief Tom Jackson should be fired, and his father, Michael Brown Sr., said rather than an apology, they would rather see Officer Darren Wilson arrested for the death of their son on Aug. 9.

“An apology would be when Dar-ren Wilson has handcuffs, pro-cessed and charged with murder,'' Brown Sr. said.

The young man, who was black, was fatally shot last month by Wil-son, who is white.

The shooting sparked days of violent protests and racial unrest in the predominantly black commu-nity. Some residents and civil rights activists have said responding po-lice officers were overly aggressive, noting their use of tear gas and sur-plus military vehicles and gear. The

shooting and police response to the protests stoked a national discourse about police tactics and race

Brown Sr. called the looting that has been interspersed with the pro-tests “disrespectful,'' but the “First Amendment protesting? They have that right.'' The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees such basic rights as freedom of speech and assembly.

“There's going to continue to be unrest until they do what should be done,'' McSpadden added, referring to Ferguson officials.

Jackson released a video apology to Brown's family and the com-munity, which is predominantly African-American, in which he acknowledged that Brown's body should have been removed from the street much sooner than it was. The young man's remains lay un-covered for more than four hours while police collected evidence.

“I don't want words, I want action,'' McSpadden said.

The parents, both wearing t-shirts with messages about their son, talked hesitantly about their emo-

tions following their son's death. McSpadden said she feels lost and helpless, and her life will never be normal again. “I have to find a new normal,'' she said haltingly.

“I'm empty,'' Brown said quietly. “There's nothing there anymore. It's hard to fill that spot with other happiness.''

Brown's parents are in Washing-ton, D.C., to meet with lawmakers and lobby Congress to pass a law requiring police officers to wear cameras during their interactions with the public. They also called on the Justice Department to take over the criminal investigation into the shooting. The Justice Department is already investigating whether Brown's civil rights were violated, and a county grand jury is weigh-ing whether to indict Wilson.

“All of our eyes see the same thing, that it was wrong, an injustice. Why wouldn't they come back with an indictment?'' McSpadden said.

Attorney General Eric Holder has met with Brown's parents, and they hope his upcoming departure will not affect the case. Holder an-nounced his resignation Thursday. “I've got confidence in him in that he will make sure that what needs to be done is done before he exits,'' McSpadden said.

The parents also expressed anger at some Ferguson police officers who wore bracelets in support of Wil-son. In a letter released Friday, the Justice Department asked Jackson, the police chief, to ``confirm our understanding'' that officers in the suburban St. Louis County depart-ment won't wear ``I am Darren Wilson'' bracelets while on duty.

Ferguson residents complained about the black bracelets with

white lettering this week at a meeting with federal officials. The Brown family's lawyer, Benjamin Crump, said the bracelets give an impression that the police lack impartiality in this case.

“It lets me know how they really feel about the situation, and the wrongness that they do,'' McSpad-den said.

Brown's parents talked with law-makers during the Congressional Black Caucus' legislative confer-ence weekend and plan to keep on lobbying. ``I ask Crump all the time, 'What else can I do?' McSpad-den said.

Brown Sr. called their efforts a fight for human rights. “They say that this is America, but we're not being treated like we're Americans. Our fight here is to just open other eyes and understand how we're feeling and try to get something done about it,'' he said.

McSpadden said her son was taught how to respect his elders.

“I taught my son respect for a po-liceman, for you, for this woman, for anybody, so if he felt like he was doing nothing wrong, which I don't believe he was, why would he be in fear of him? You're not supposed to fear the police.''

Mayor Rob Ford Back on the

campaign trail

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is back hard at work on the campaign trail with less than 4 weeks left till elec-tion day. Altough he offi cially ex-ited the race for Mayor of Toronto when doctors diagnosed him with a rare form of cancer, the Mayor is still by his brother Doug Fords side, as Doug attempts to pick up where the Mayor left off running for the top jon in the city.

Despite being in between round 1 and round 2 of Chemotheraphy, the Mayor seems to be holding up quite well. In a brief phone interview with the Mayor, he told Vision Newspaper Canada that he was feeling much better and that he was on his way to an event. He is currently running for councilor of Etobicoke which we believe will be a guarantee win for the Etobicoke native.

Etobicoke is the Mayor of To-rontos home, old ridding and also the head quarters of Ford Nation which is a deep political support base for the cuurent Mayor of the city., made up of local residents and small business owners. Over the years Ford Nation has grown from Etobicoke to Scarborough with members amazed by the loyal and down to earth nature of the Mayor.

Th e election for Mayor of Toronto will be held on October 27th 2014.

Jennifer Hudson's new album, “JHUD,'' would fl y off the shelves if every copy included a tiny stage, complete with miniature Jennifer Hudson singing live.

Her voice _ that powerful instru-ment capable of toppling pillars, and sending wigs into a tailspin _ is what enraptured “American Idol'' audiences back in 2004, and the rest of the world in 2006 with “Dreamgirls,'' which won Hudson an Oscar.

But three albums into Hudson's music career, the Grammy-win-ning star still sounds like she's singing other people's music. That is to say, while “JHUD'' is solid collection of tracks, Hudson seems to be conforming to fi t a sound and persona not her own.

“Daddy do, do or die, tatt my

name so I know you're mine,'' she sings on opening track “Danger-ous'' _ a far cry from the “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going'' of yore. That soulfulness takes a backseat to the tough-chick-in-love persona that drives “JHUD,'' rippling through the sassy “Walk It Out,'' featuring Timbaland, and “He Ain't Goin' Nowhere,'' with Iggy Azalea.

The songs are fun, admittedly, but they beg the question, “Jenni-fer, is that really you?''

Other tracks are more believable, and more enjoyable, too. There's the disco-tinged “It's Your World,'' featuring R. Kelly, and Hudson's interpretation of “I Still Love You'' from British house DJ Switch.

Her vocals fl oat effortlessly from honeyed to heavy on “Bring Back the Music,'' and she sets off goose bumps in a stirring tribute to her late mother on “Moan,'' which closes the 10-track set.

Still, there's no getting around the disappointment of an OK, but not amazing album from Hudson. Here's hoping that her next set is as unique and powerful as she is.

The MOBO Awards have helped ignite the careers of numerous UK artists includ-ing Amy Winehouse, Craig David, Ms Dynamite, Estelle,

N-Dubz and Emeli Sandé, who all went on to achieve great success after being recognised by MOBO.

This year’s crop of multiple nominees once again as-serts the MOBO Awards’ po-sition as a leader in spotting emerging talent.

In the category of Best Reggae Act, deejay Stylo G, singers Chronixx and Tarrus Riley, and deejays Alkaline and Popcaan are nominees.

Stylo G, who hails from Spanish Town, is the most

visible of the nominees in the United Kingdom. He has enjoyed mainstream hits there such as Come Over (with Clean Bandit), Sound-bwoy, Badd (featuring Sister Nancy) and Move Back. This is his second nomination.

It is the fi rst nomination for Alkaline and Chronixx and it is Popcaan’s third.

Taurrus Riley was fi rst nom-inated for a MOBO in 2008 and has racked up three other nominations since.

The Jamaican artiste with

most wins in the Best Reg-gae Act category is Sean Paul with six. This year, he is nominated for Best Song with Dangerous Love, his combination with British rap-per Fuse ODG.

RIVERDALE, Ga. _ Republican Gov. Nathan Deal and rapper Ludacris may seem like an odd pairing for a campaign event, but the duo was a hit with a cheering crowd of students Friday.

Christopher ``Ludacris’’ Bridges has been an outspoken support-er of President Barack Obama, penning a profane song during the 2008 campaign criticizing

Deal kept his comments short before the crowd of about 200 at the charter school Utopian Academy for the Arts, just outside Atlanta. INDEPENDENCE, Ohio _ Wearing a wine-and-gold Cavs uniform again, LeBron James took his fi rst steps toward ending Cleveland's champi-onship drought.

Back home and where he began his NBA career, James and the transformed Cavaliers held media day Friday as they began a journey they hope ends with the city's fi rst pro sports championship since the Browns won it all in 1964. More than 300 media members, includ-ing TV crews from Germany, Japan and Brazil, descended upon the team's training facility _ most of them to see James.

The superstar, who won two titles in four years with the Miami Heat, knows winning a title for Cleve-land would be the pinnacle of his career. He also knows it won't be easy.

“I still have a lot to prove because of expectations I put on myself,'' James said. “I ask more of myself than anybody can ever ask of me. My expectations are still high but I am more patient now than I was four years ago. I understand what it takes to win a championship. I understand winning a champion-ship is the hardest thing you could

ever do. I've been two up and two down in four years.

“I went from crying tears of joy to tears of frustration. I know it all. I know what it takes.''

James re-signed as a free agent this summer with the Cavs, who then acquired All-Star forward Kev-in Love in a trade from Minnesota. Along with Kyrie Irving, Cleveland has a “Big 3'' perhaps better than the one James had in Miami with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh .

The talented group will be guided by David Blatt, who will be coach-ing in the NBA for the fi rst time after a successful international career.

“Let's get it on,'' Blatt said. “I'm like Marvin Gaye up here. Let's get it started.''

Blatt said the signifi cance of this season hit him as he arrived for work.

“I couldn't fi nd a parking place,'' he joked.

The Cavs haven't been to the play-offs in four years _ since James left _ but they've gone from being irrel-evant to the epicenter of the NBA. Still, there are no guarantees and James knows the team can't take any shortcuts to reach the top.

“You can't try to play November to get to June or May right now,'' he said. “You have to be patient.''

James made it clear that he'll lead the Cavs and his experience will make them better.

“I will be the leader of the team,'' he said. “I believe I bring leader-ship qualities that a lot of guys either don't want or just don't know how to do it _ and I can. I can lead by example. I can lead by voice. I can lead by command and I can lead by just my presence. That's the most important thing for me. That's what I'm more excited about than anything.''

PERTH, Australia _ Top-ranked Serena Williams will combine with Wimbledon doubles champion Jack Sock in the Unit-ed States team which will compete in a star-studded Hopman Cup tournament in January.

Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., rising Australian star Nick Kyrgios and world No.6 Agnieszka Radwanska are among other big names confi rmed for the Jan. 4-10 event.

Williams won the Cup with James Blake in 2003 and Mardy Fish in 2008 and will again use the tournament as preparation for the fi rst Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Austra-lian Open.

Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tson-ga will combine with Alize Cornet in a French team playing in Group B with Australia, Great Britain and Poland. Two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray will play for Britain alongside Heather Watson.

WASHINGTON _ Tiger Woods' tourna-ment will have yet another new home in 2017.

Organizers announced Thursday that the 2017 Quicken Loans National will be played at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Maryland.

It's the course that used to be known as TPC Avenel when it hosted the Kemper Open. The course has since undergone a multimillion dollar renovation.

Woods would prefer to play the tourna-ment at Congressional Country Club. Congressional's members have balked at hosting the event every year, and instead have approved a plan to hold it in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

The 2015 tournament will be played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gaines-ville, Virginia.

The Tiger Woods Foundation runs the tournament, and Woods has said he wants it to stay in the Washington area.

BEIJING _ Venus Williams withdrew from the China Open with a viral illness on Thursday shortly before her third-round match against Petra Kvitova.

The match would have been a reprise of their third-round encounter at Wim-bledon, which Kvitova won in three sets after being just two points from defeat in the second set. Kvitova then went on to win her second title at the All England Club.

China Open organizers said Williams was suffering from a viral illness. Venus' sister, Serena, also withdrew from a tournament last week in the central Chinese city of Wuhan citing a virus.

Defending champion Serena Williams plays Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic for a spot in the China Open quarterfi nals later Thursday.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. _ Kobe Bry-ant essentially lost last season to injury. Los Angeles Lakers gen-eral manager Mitch Kupchak is confi dent Bryant will bounce back impressively.

Kupchak radiated optimism Friday while discussing the Lak-ers' prospects for the upcoming season. Los Angeles missed the playoffs last spring for just the third time in 38 years, but the GM believes he has a playoff-con-tending roster in place around Bryant.

He acknowledges the Lakers'

hopes hinge on the health of guards Bryant and Steve Nash, who both barely played last sea-son.

But both stars appear to be fully recovered after an extra-long off-season. Kupchak also says he would support Byron Scott if the new coach elects to limit the guards' minutes or participation in back-to-back games.

MIAMI _ Erik Spoelstra has ready plenty about the notion of reinven-tion, which seems appropriate given the task that he and the Miami Heat are embarking upon.

The post-LeBron James chapter of Heat basketball is beginning.

Spoelstra, the coach entering his seventh season in Miami, somehow sees it as opportunity.

Spoelstra and the Heat went through media day on Friday, the annual prelude to the start of training camp. For the fi rst time in fi ve years, Miami will begin a season without being widely expected to end the season as NBA champions, an obvious side effect of James returning to Cleve-land and leaving the Heat.

“We have a much different chal-lenge,'' Spoelstra said. “I can't believe this, but I'm starting my 20th year here. And we've had many dif-ferent chapters and different chal-lenges. If I've learned anything in this seat, I've learned that's what coach-ing in this NBA business is about, is embracing change, adapting with change.''

And there are changes. Plenty of them.

It's not like James is the only depar-ture from the team that lost in last year's NBA Finals. The Heat had 18 players in uniform at various points of last season; only seven of them are back in uniform for the start of this training camp. Miami has 51 per cent of its scoring from last season back; by comparison, San Antonio _ which needed fi ve games to oust Mi-ami as NBA champions _ has 99 per cent of last year's scoring returning this year.

“I might have to start passing out nametags and stickers,'' Heat for-ward Udonis Haslem said. “I thought I'd seen everything in this league. This is my fi rst year experiencing something like this, with 11 new guys. Weird? No. But interesting. ... It's defi nitely different.''

It won't be wholesale changes for the Heat, even though the roster is markedly different. One of the very fi rst things Spoelstra said on Friday is that “the Heat culture, the Heat code, that will remain the same,'' which means defence will come be-fore everything else and the internal expectations will be as high as ever.

“The bedrocks of playing together _ attacking, helping each other get the best available shot _ that's what important. Those things remain the same,'' Spoelstra said. “But certain-ly, some of the fi ner points have to be a little bit different.''

Many players, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh included, tried changing their bodies over the summer. Wade did not give reporters a specifi c total with regard to his weight loss, but he did appear lighter than he was at the end of last season.

“We have a foundation here,'' guard Norris Cole said. “There's a way that we do things here. The guys that are new, they'll learn from the guys who have been here, and we'll set a good example. Then we'll just keep the ball rolling. ... We're still the Heat.''

Spoelstra has been fond in recent years of saying the Heat have enough to win, and that refrain will likely be repeated this year.

Wade and Bosh make the Heat one of seven teams to have at least two players on the camp roster with more than 15,000 career points. There's seven players in Heat camp _ Wade, Bosh, Haslem, Chris An-dersen, Mario Chalmers, Cole and newcomer Shannon Brown _ who have at least one NBA championship ring in their possession.

And Wade, Bosh, Luol Deng and Danny Granger have been selected to the All-Star Game a combined 22 times.

“We have a Heat standard and that's to compete for an NBA title,'' Spoel-stra said. “Every year that I've been here, for 20 years, whether the team turned out that way or not, that was the objective from Day One in train-ing camp. That's how we're all wired and that's what we expect from this team. Regardless of what people are saying about us out there or not, we want to start the process of building a very competitive team.''

MONTREAL - Academy Award nominated director and screen-writer Spike Lee is in Montreal today to receive an honour at the tenth International Black Film Festival.

Lee will receive the inaugural Pio-neer award tonight in recognition for his work, which the festival says revolutionized the role of black talent in Hollywood.

Lee told a news conference a lot has changed in the 25 years since his movie “Do the Right Thing'' played in theatres.

He says he would never have

thought at the time that an Afri-can American -- Barack Obama -- could have been elected presi-dent of the United States.

But says more African Americans are living in poverty now than 25 years ago and police are still killing black people.

Lee also says that still more diver-sity is needed in Hollywood, point-ing out that sports in America is even more diverse than cinema.

He says he remembers seeing P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens during a playoff game last season and described him as a great player -- adding that the New York Rangers are also in need of a black hockey player.

Lee says he's looking forward to meeting Subban at the fi lm festi-val which runs through Septem-ber 28th.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. _ Play-ing an attorney on TV has shown Viola Davis there's a slim _ and slippery _ divide between guilt and inno-cence.

The 49-year-old actress stars as a defence attorney and law professor on the new ABC show “How to Get Away With Murder,'' which pre-miered Thursday to an im-pressive 14 million viewers.

Davis' character, Annalise Keating, comes off in the first episode as sharp, intim-idating and not all the way righteous. Davis said the role taught her “just how fine

the line is between guilt and innocence, and a lie and the truth, and good and bad.''

“I'm not just talking about the cases,'' she said. “I mean being a defence attor-ney!''

Davis has had recurring roles on TV series includ-ing “Law & Order: SVU'' and “United States of Tara,'' but it's a new experience for the Oscar-nominated and To-ny-winning star to work full-time in TV.

“I'm tired, but I'm liking it. I'm liking the pace of it,'' she said. “I'm liking the quick

decisions you have to make. I feel alive as an artist.''

She also appreciates the chance to stay in one place and sleep in her own bed each night.

“Having a 4-year-old, that's fabulous,'' she said.

Davis discussed her new show Sunday at a benefit for the Rape Treatment Center, which she became acquaint-ed with through research for a role.

“That whole facility just moved me,'' she said. “It is just geared toward helping

the victim... and I wanted to be a part of that. My heart was moved by it.''

Kerry Washington helps kick off 'Scandal' clothing collection

NEW YORK _ Kerry Washington wants women to look as powerful and put together as her TV perso-na.

Fashion retailer The Limited has teamed up with the ``Scandal'' star and the show's costume de-signer, Lyn Paolo, for a collection inspired by the ABC drama, which premieres its fourth season on Thursday.

Washington appeared at a launch party for the line on Monday, where she said it was important for clothing to be accessible.

“There are women who can literally afford to dress like Oliv-ia Pope, and I don't know how, because those clothes are very,

very, very expensive,'' she said with a laugh.

“There are other people who can't, and there is no reason why only the people who make a certain amount of money should have access to this feminine power in fashion, you know? This line is created so that everybody can fi nd their own inner gladiator. That every woman can be power-ful and sexy, brilliant and smart and gorgeous, fashion-forward. You know, it's just there's no limit to who you can be.''

There are 42 looks in the Scandal Collection, including tops, jackets, outerwear and, of course, pants, because, as Washington says: “Olivia Pope wears the pants both

literally and fi guratively.''

Last year, Paolo, with Wash-ington's input, created window displays for Saks Fifth Avenue by dressing its mannequins like “Scandal'' characters. The dis-plays featured clothing by high-end designers such as Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Donna Karan and Carolina Herrera.

The 37-year-old actress wasn't as keen to talk about a New York Times article by TV critic Ales-sandra Stanley, where the writer referred to “Scandal'' producer Shonda Rhimes as an “angry black woman.'' On Monday, the newspaper's public editor called the article “astonishingly tone-

deaf and out of touch.''

“I really think it's important to focus on all the good things that are going on,'' she said. “It's such an honour to be a part of an historic Thursday-night lineup and to be in one of her three shows, to be part of her magical (produc-tion company), Shondaland.''

Rhimes is also the producer of “How to Get Away With Murder'' and “Grey's Anatomy.''

Lebron James has recently unveiled the look of his brand new shoe “The LeBron 12”.

According to Nike the key to these shoes are the “Nike Air Zoom Units.”, which are the hexagonal packs on the sole.

The Lebron 12 were originally scheduled to be released in the USA on October 11th 2014 but have been postponed by Nike due to “cosmetic issues”. “Product quality is a priority for Nike,” the company said in a statement on its website. “Due to a small cosmetic issue with some of the LeBron 12 shoes, we have delayed the initial retail launch that

was scheduled for China on Oct. 1, and the global launch that was scheduled for Oct. 11. We will communicate an update on the retail date as soon as possible.”

Since the shoes had already gone into production before James switched from the Miami Heat to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and subsequently switched numbers from No. 6 to No. 23, one thought is that Nike needs to switch out the “6” with the “23” on a visible tag on the back of the shoe. In pictures of the shoe released by Nike last month, the back tag of the shoe says “LRJ.06.”
