San Diego Hosts Nonviolence Training"Love is the only force capable of turning an enemy into a friend."

- R ev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In the spirit of compassion, the people of San Diego will host a major, four-day training entitled “Creating A

Culture of Peace.” This gathering has been coordinated and co-sponsored by three local groups: The United African American Ministerial Action Council (UAAMAC), the Peace Resource Center of San Diego and the San Diego Chapter of Veterans for Peace.

Creating a Culture of Peace (CCP) is a nationwide nonviolence training program for community peacemaking which includes actual practice in local community projects. This course teaches practical skills which address injustice and various aspects of violence and how to apply the same popular educational approach used by civil rights activists Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks.

CCP will be offering Basic Nonviolence Training for Personal and Social Change. You can expect instruction from two outstanding trainers: Janet Chisholm and Joan O’Kray. Chisolm is the CCP founder, coordinator and senior trainer. She is

a peace activist with experience in religious education, anti-poverty programs, and teacher training. O’Kray is a CCP facilitator and practicing mediator in New York. She is an experienced project consultant and leader of international delegations.

CCP San Diego is looking for local trainers, facilitators, and teachers committed to nonviolence and to the training of those who are interested in becoming CCP Facilitators.

This March Basic Training will take place at the U.A.A.M.A.C. Headquarters, 4981 Market St., San Diego, CA 92102. March 10 - 13, 3 evenings and all day March 13. Bring your own drinks, snacks and a sack lunch. Coffee, tea and water will be available.

Saturday dinner will be provided. For information, please contact Carroll Boone, the local CCP Coordinator, at [email protected], 619-697-3223, please go to www.creatingacultureofpeace.org for more information about CCP.

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current Dalai Lama has famously said, “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” In my many years of working with people,

I have found this to be true. Developing a capacity for compassion goes a long way towards relieving loneliness, depression, anxiety, fear and anger. Compassion is the antithesis of, and antidote for, bigotry, prejudice and hate. And compassion— when taken as a basis for decision-making, unerringly paves the way for success in personal and professional relationships.

Compassion is the effort to share the suffering of others, and the subsequent desire to bring comfort and understanding. More active than sympathy and deeper than empathy, compassion is a combination of selflessness and hard work. True compassion is difficult to hold, and requires practice to maintain. I believe,

v i e w p o i n t

however, that the rewards of living with a compassionate attitude easily outweigh the requisite pain, as compassion heals the healer as well as the afflicted.

Compassion is considered to be a virtue in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and most other religions. It is a much better motivation for our social behaviors than Freud’s concept of the super-ego or the self-actualization at the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy. When compassion is at the heart of how we relate to others, the world becomes a better, more peaceful place. As Schopenhauer elegantly stated, “Compassion is the basis of morality.”

So how can we develop, or continue to develop, compassion? It all starts with mindfulness. When we take the time to sit with someone and quiet our busy inner voices full of “shoulds,” “woulds” and “what-ifs,” we can start to truly become mindful of the other person. As our understanding deepens, we will invariably see that he or she is basically striving for happiness and relief from suffering, just as we are. Once we become mindful of others’ suffering and desires, compassion comes as a natural reflex; the best and highest expression of our innate humanity.

The quiet attention required for mindfulness is the foundation of all humanistic psychology, whether practiced by a professional therapist in an office or by a friend in a living room. It is the prerequisite for compassion, and requires discipline and concentration. The psychologist Daniel Goleman has noted that, “The act of compassion begins with full attention, just as rapport does.”

Once we have established a state of mindfulness and appreciate the fact that the other person has the same need for happiness and freedom from pain as we do, the psychospiritual distance between “us” and “them” disappears. This is the relationship without boundaries of Martin Buber’s Ich und Du (I and Thou) wherein we are able to deeply connect and authentically feel another’s suffering. It is a powerful experience, and is the operative core of compassion. It is in this place of understanding and being understood that healing happens. The Christian mystic Thomas Merton described this state when he wrote, “The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.”

Holding a compassionate attitude in the workplace is also worth mentioning, especially in the area of management, which by definition involves making decisions for other people and this—at least occasionally—can lead to disagreements. “Because I said so” is certainly widely used as a basis for management decisions, but experience proves it to be not particularly effective. I have learned that management decisions made with love, respect and compassion are more gracefully received and thoughtfully carried out than those made from a stance of false ego and “power.” (Yes, this works well with children too.) If you are in a position to manage the efforts of others, try coming from a deep appreciation that those with whom you work give you so much of their waking time. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the results, for both parties. This is what Henry Ward Beecher meant when he wrote, “Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation.”

To me, the way of compassion entails utilizing a compassionate attitude in every situation, to the best of my ability. I believe that each of us can be a force in a “ripple effect” of kindness that will resonate through our personal spheres of influence and then to others. In this sense, compassion is our “best practice” for actually making the world a better place.

“In separateness lies the world’s great misery, in compassion lies the world’s true strength.”—Gautama Buddha

All of us grow up with labels that become embedded in our mind’s files which change the perception of ourselves and our self-worth.

We receive these labels from friends, family, and peers. For me, there were some good labels, but my consciousness grabbed onto the negative ones. The most hurtful labels were that I was lazy, fat and forgetful.

I grew up without a lot of self-worth. Even at 18 when I was a size three, I don’t remember feeling thin.

When I look back at my childhood pictures, I question those labels and the people from whom they came. As I reflect back, I can see when self-doubt started entering my psyche and how my files got corrupted. The abusive patterns of inner chatter brought in feelings of lack and doubt. Self-abuse then replaced self-love.

Personally, growing meant the process of removing unwanted labels/files from my system. It meant taking charge of myself and questioning my beliefs. It meant observing the inner chatter and recognizing the manipulations that were part of my mind’s makeup. It meant that being honest with myself was the first step into my healing. It’s been a long journey. Now I can look back, see the progress, and rejoice. The path into self-love has also taught me how to feel love and compassion for others. Many teachers have come along, and one very recently.

I met Alfonso De Rose one afternoon by accident at The Bodhi Tree Bookstore in Los Angeles. My inquisitive mind took me to a workshop that was just about to end. Curious to know who had spoken that day, I went inside. Hmm...weight loss—not my favorite subject and one I had given up on. For 20 years, my weight had been rising steadily with no sign of relenting. The reporter in me decided to question De Rose, a tall dark Italian with intense eyes, a firm demeanor, and of course, an Italian accent. He told me that we need to enjoy food and eat whatever we love. Good, I thought, because I hate diets and will not go on any crazy eating philosophy. I liked what he had to say and felt confident that I would learn something new. A week later, I was taking his workshop. After three days, the time came to test the scales. Much to my surprise, I was six pounds lighter—and I’m continued on page 40

currently down 17 pounds. What happened to me? I found my inner strength and discovered how to enjoy my relationship with food. I became a student

of De Rose’s Thinner Journey and am learning the art of compassionate acceptance. Recently, I had the pleasure of

asking De Rose a few questions about how it all works.Vision Magazine: What is the secret to permanent

and successful weight loss? Alfonso De Rose: Your body is an exact reflection of

how you feel inside…in the invisible world of your mind, your emotions, and your spirit. For example, if you have a rash on your skin, it shows that in the inner world, you

are stressed, in pain, or maybe sad. In the same way, to resolve the overweight issue, we need to do the work from

within. Your body is a reflection of your inner world. Your physical body is only one percent of who you really are, and 99

percent is composed of your mental body, your emotional body and your ethereal body.

VM: What is Thinner Journey? ADR: Thinner Journey works at the root

cause; this is where you have to release the weight. We normally think that in order to shed a few pounds, we have to avoid certain

foods, go on a diet, or start some intense exercise program. These changes might work for some time, but eventually we gain everything back, and sometimes more. There is only one way to keep your body healthy and slim. When you learn to love yourself through your body as it is, you learn to release the weight you are holding onto. It is amazing how obedient your body temple really is. This is how we get results; this is true weight loss, and this is the Thinner Journey.

VM: So how do we learn to truly love ourselves? ADR: The ideal woman’s body shape is always changing. For example, in

the 1800s, plump women were considered beautiful. Nowadays, a skinny body is everyone’s perfect body image. We feel that if we are not skinny, we are not lovable. Television, magazines and the media in general have created this false body image. I call it The Hollywood Syndrome. So whose body image do we

Floatation Therapy is a profound and effortless healing modality which allows you to get in touch with your true self as you leave stress and distractions behind.

The person wishing to float enters a tank about the size of a small closet (lying on its side), which contains a ten inch deep solution of water and 800 lbs. of Epsom salt, set at 94˚ F (skin temperature). The combination of zero gravity and reduction of external stimulus has a profound effect on the nervous system, causing the brain to utilize all of its energy to heal and rejuvenate the body while clearing negative emotions. Floatation therapy can be used in conjunction with other healing therapies which increases the effectiveness of them all. It is especially used to enhance physical therapy, psychotherapy, hypnosis, spiritual practices, creativity, and athletic ability.

Floating can rapidly and significantly decrease stress and anxiety, by sharply

lowering the level of biochemicals directly related to these conditions. It helps reduce the production of excess adrenaline (the “fight or flight” response) and increases the level of serotonin in your brain, thus elevating your mood. Considering that excess stress is the number one cause of illness, floating can be a key prevention therapy. It is also a tool to help you to have increased compassion for others by increasing your own level of health and happiness.

Have you ever felt bogged down from being excessively intellectual or analytical, and wished that you could instead utilize your creativity and intuition on a daily basis? Floating can suspend the dominance of the detail-oriented left hemisphere of the brain, allowing the right hemisphere (which deals with large scale and novel information) to operate freely. This gives the floater access to unusual powers of creativity, imagination, concentration, and problem solving. Floating has been known to be popular among artists, writers, and designers as it helps open up new channels of inspiration.

Floatation therapy is used extensively for relief of chronic pain and to assist the healing of disabling injuries. When the body is released from the force of gravity, the brain is allowed to speed up healing without drugs. Floating naturally releases endorphins in the brain, which are the pain-relieving, euphoria-creating substances produced by the limbic system of the body. Studies have shown that floating increases circulation, stimulates increased blood flow to the brain, enhances the immune system and assists the process of recovery from traumatic incidents.

Floatation can also be utilized to enhance spiritual practices. Throughout history, shamans, mystics, and yogis have extolled the benefits of going to remote places for meditation and contemplation where they become in tune with their ‘real’ selves. The floatation tank provides a convenient modern method of isolating oneself from the outside world to transform consciousness into a higher level of awareness, without there being a need to stay holed up in a Himalayan cave for weeks. In a way you are connecting with the collective unconscious—the source of all knowledge. Floatation helps the brain attain a state of theta or gamma rays which are necessary for deep meditative states and providing insight and realization not found in other brain wave states.

Floatation can also increase athletic performance and speed up the recovery time of injuries as well as reduce stress from peak output. Floatation enhances the stamina, speed, strength, and coordination of the athlete, as it also helps him stay focused.

Everyone can benefit from floatation therapy. It helps smooth out the uncertainties and difficulties that can arise on a daily basis, and helps you integrate your mind, body, and spirit to increased happiness and productivity.

Discover for yourself how you can benefit from floatation therapy by calling Green Tara Float Center in the North Park area of San Diego at 619.683.3817. Our website is www.greentarafloatcenter.com and we are located at 3069 Lincoln Avenue, San Diego, CA 92104.

Seeing Myself

Through Another Man’s

Windows© 2010 by

Michael Raysses

For ancient Greeks, the eyes were the windows to one’s soul. One day, many years ago, I noticed my windows were clouded and lifeless. It was early on a hot summer morning, and as I stared into the mirror in

my bathroom, I was seized with the notion that my life had become nothing I recognized or wanted. I had moved west to become an actor, and though I’d had modest success, none of it connected me to anything meaningful. All it led me to was this moment—holding a nine-to-five job, about to angle my way through rush hour traffic, yearning for a cup of coffee.

I was wrestling with that realization on my way to work when I looked up and suddenly saw an old man crossing the street in front of me. I hit my brakes, the tires screeching their protest. As startled as I was, the old man barely seemed to notice how close he’d come to becoming roadkill.

He was dressed in a dark suit and black fedora, more fitting for a Chicago winter than a midsummer morning in Los Angeles. I shook my head at his carelessness as I parked the car and ran into Starbucks.

As I got in line, there he was—the man I almost hit—right in front of me. I wanted to say something to him about being so negligent, but he turned to me first.

“Hello,” he said with warmth and familiarity, almost as if we were old friends. I felt disarmed, instantly regretting having had any ill thoughts about him. When he got to the head of the line, the old man ordered a cup of coffee.

“Tall, grande, or venti?” the clerk asked. The man looked perplexed.“Just a cup of coffee, please,” he answered. And in one of those moments that

make you wish for a simpler time, the clerk recited the same inane litany of choices. Watching this was torture, so I stepped up and ordered a large cup of coffee for the old man. When he finally got what he came for, he exited the line, toasting me with a look of gratitude and a tip of his hat.

As I stirred my coffee, I noticed the old man had taken a seat on the patio, and that I would have to pass him on my way out. I looked up at the clock—I was running late—but as I exited the café, I inexplicably stopped and asked if I might join him. He effortlessly gestured to a chair like he was expecting me the entire time.

Sitting down, I finally got a good look at him. His suit was shiny from too much wear; his shoes clung to his bare feet with what little life they had left in them. The light blue shirt he wore beneath his coat was missing a button right over his heart. His expressionless face was rimmed by a thick gray beard, which gave way to his eyes: two deep pools of blue, an oasis in the desert of his countenance. I didn’t really see his face until I saw his eyes.

His name was Sam. He was 72 years old and had suffered a stroke sometime in the last two years. He was Jewish, from Germany. He’d been married twice, with children from his first union. They were all adults now.

As we talked, his words seeped through like water from a dam straining not

to burst. Yet the more he leaked, the greater the cascade. Listening to him, I was struck by the jagged paradox he posed. He was dressed shabbily, but he carried himself regally. Even when he became animated, I could detect him trying to maintain an air of decorum.

Then, in one of life’s head-on coincidences, Sam began to talk about the very things that had weighed so heavily on me that very morning. He spoke about his past and how it didn’t match up with his present. He didn’t even bother to mention his future. In fact, the more he spoke, the more passive his voice and manner grew, until by the end of our conversation, he was talking as if his life was over, and he was merely marking the days. During the time it took me to finish my coffee, the craggy contradiction had become worn smooth with sadness and resignation.

Ask the LifeQuake™ Doctor

Dr. Toni Galardi

Spring is coming! March 20 marks the Spring Equinox, bringing blossoms and new life. For those of you who have already reneged on promises made to yourself, this is a great time for getting back on the horse and initiating

change. Take one habit that is holding you back from becoming the “best you” possible. Expect your destiny to change—in fact, declare it! Then write to me about your progress or any questions concerning what may be holding you back.

Dear Dr. Toni:I have been an artist for almost 20 years. I am told my work is good but I have

trouble with the PR part of the business. I hate having to show at gallery openings and talk about my work. I would rather just do what I do and have an agent market for me, but I am told that you have to be part of the selling end of things.

I am writing because I think part of it has to do with the fact that my father does not approve of me being an artist. He maintains that because I didn’t go to a professional art school, I lack credibility, so I always feel like a fraud when I have to promote my work publicly. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to get out of my own way?

Hiding Out in Encinitas Dear Hiding:Ah, yes. This is a common dilemma for many artists. The personality of the

individual who can spend long days creating in isolation is often quite introverted. Public openings in galleries can feel downright painful. In your case though, I think that more is at play.

I would like to suggest that you use writing as a healing tool for releasing the beliefs you inherited from your father. One way for you to do this is to speak to your “inner father/judge” using your dominant hand and respond to this critic using your non-dominant hand. What this does is open the channel to your intuition and your “wholy” self.

For example, ask this question from your critic using your right hand if you’re right handed: “Who are you to think that you have what it takes to be taken seriously as a painter?” Answer the question with your left hand. Keep asking questions from the critic until you feel enough support from the answers given by

your “wholy” self that you feel more at peace and you can surrender your resistance to promoting your work. Get in touch with the part of you that has experienced joy from your art and let that be your intention for what you want people to feel when they have one of your pieces in their home or office.

Dear Dr. Toni:I’ve started a relationship with a man who lives

in a part of the country I will never move to. I work from home and could live anywhere, but I don’t want to live in a hot, humid climate. He claims that he wants to move back to California, but not for 18 months—until his son graduates. It is really hard having long separations and I am questioning if I am wasting my time on someone who may never move back.

How does one decide whether to invest in something that could end in a year?Lonely and in Love Dear In Love:My dear, love is a risk no matter where it shows up. If he were here, it would

come with other risks. You don’t mention how often you see each other. You also don’t mention whether this is an exclusive relationship or what has been decided regarding a future with each other. Let’s presume you see each other once a month. If you don’t, by the way, I would insist on those terms if you need more contact. Secondly, I would not make it an exclusive relationship until there is a commitment in place. What will allow you to be more patient with the process of discovery is if you continue to date others and have a social life where you let it continue to evolve. If he wants exclusivity, define what the relationship is and what each of you expects over the next 18 months.

I have one last suggestion, should things progress. If there is a way for you to work anywhere, negotiate with him what you need in order for you to move to where he is. What kind of compromises do you need from him for you to relocate: Do you need a plan? Do you need a ring on your finger? Do you need him to accommodate your heat sensitivity by providing you with constant air conditioning at all times? Perhaps extracting a promise that he will never wear flip-flops and Bermuda shorts when he takes you to dinner will be comforting. The point is, be clear but do it with humor. You will get further in your negotiations, irrespective of whether you move there or not.

Healing the Healers through Conscious Thought and Compassionate Languageby Carolyn Berry, MFT and Bibi Caspari

We healers enter into our work with com-passionate hearts and thoughtful resolve to make a difference and help others.

Sometimes, however, we become depleted by those we are helping. Consequently, we may find ourselves

unable to do our best. At that point, it is necessary to heal ourselves. The most powerful way to do so may

be through an awakening to the interconnectedness of our bodies, hearts, minds, spirits and the world around us. This can start with a shift in our thinking.

Our thoughts affect our emotions, attitudes, behaviors and choices. Our inner dialogue reflects and feeds our thoughts and

beliefs, functioning interdependently and contributing to a healthy supportive process or a negative draining process. The process between inner dialogue, thoughts and beliefs can be transformed by injecting compassionate language.

Problematic language is rooted in a win-lose paradigm in which situations are either/or—either I care for myself (and am selfish) or I care for others (and am generous). The healing truth lies in the win-win interdependent paradigm in which caring for self and others exists simultaneously.

We can learn to create a flow of conscious thought and compassionate language that provides us with a dependable and clear path to healing. We can learn to expand and draw on the endless loving flow of energy that is ours to use freely.

Energy is everywhere. It is outside of and within us. We consist of and live in a world of neurons, protons and electrons. When we think, those atomic particles are affected and stimulate energy. When we are aware of our thoughts and direct them, we can conduct the composition and projection of our energy field. When we create a message of compassionate language to give to ourselves, our inner dialogue then projects positive messages toward others in our environment.

Wayne Muller, extended faculty of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, said, “…even as we serve others we are working on ourselves; every act, every word, every gesture of genuine compassion naturally nourishes our own hearts as well. It is not a question of who is healed first. When we attend to ourselves with compassion and mercy, more healing is also made available to others. And when we serve others with an open and generous heart, great healing comes to us.”

Compassionate language consists of loving words and tones that manifest into loving actions. Our conscious thoughts, given strong positive attributes by the infiltration of consistent compassionate language, streams into our energy field engendering healing connections, which then loops back to support our positive thinking and compassionate language.

This is a method of indigenous healers. By seeing the interconnectedness of all things, they practice harmonious connection between the unseen, the body, the heart and the mind that manifests into experiential healing.

In The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles, author Bruce Lipton, PhD, wrote, “The latest discoveries in physics and cell research are forging new links between the worlds of Science and Spirit. The latest science leads us to a worldview not unlike that held by the earliest civilizations, in which every material object in Nature was thought to possess a spirit. This is the world of quantum physics, in which matter and energy are completely entangled.”

This concept of interconnectedness propels the flow of conscious thought and compassionate language, opening the door to heal the healers.

Carolyn Berry, MFT, and Bibi Caspari, Founder and Executive Director of Forward Step will present “Healing the Healers” workshop March 26 at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino, CA. For more information, call 818.231.0708 or register at turnkeytrainings.com.

MakingYour Life

Your Practice© 2010 by Selina Maitreya

Making your life your practice is being your divinity, living every

moment from your divine essence—not simply accessing your holiness through occasional meditation, yoga or visits to a healer or teacher. It involves choosing responses, activities, relationships, and thoughts based on your higher good. This is total life—seeing all moments as linked and inseparable.

Living your divinity every moment is a commitment to developing spiritual goals, ideals that guide your interactions with the world, and rules of spiritual conduct that you choose to direct your relationships and actions. It’s living by holy laws that help you choose which thoughts to keep and which thoughts to let go. Yes, you can indeed choose to hold onto your thoughts or not. Every action you choose to take or not contributes to the overall fabric of your life here on Earth. As we are all connected, your thoughts are ours, meaning that the energy you create with your thoughts affects everyone. Choosing to live in the state of being awake, aware and conscious of each word, thought and deed you create is truly making your life your practice. Living this way is what builds spiritual

m i n d s t a t e sintegrity and light. As you grow in light, we all grow.

This work is not for the weekend spiritual visitor. This is an ongoing discipline and it is the work of the spiritual warrior.

The fi rst step toward this new way of being is to understand the experience of living in your Spiritual Integrity.

Let’s explore these two very important words. Merriam Webster defi nes spiritual as “of or relating to sacred matters; incorporeal,” and integrity as “the state of being complete or undivided.”

Living in Spiritual Integrity means that you have values that you have chosen to live by regardless of the conduct of others. Despite your physical state, or your fi nancial or emotional state, you choose to sit in your integrity. You are consistent living life with your values intact. Regardless of the chaos around and

outside of yourself, you remain grounded in your knowing. There is no blaming others or waffl ing. You know your truth and you seek to live there constantly.

Make no mistake, this is a huge undertaking.Living in the physical world in your Spiritual Integrity is the goal that each of

us has been asked to take on as we incarnated into physical life. “Be in the world, but not of it,” Jesus proclaimed. Though you may have made great attempts to be this way, I would lovingly challenge you to look and see how, when and where you are and are not in your life’s integrity. Being aware of your state at all times is one of the most important spiritual practices to master. As a teacher, Jesus knew how hard it was for energy beings to be in their divinity in their physical lives and he knew that this was the work that we are here to do.

Being in this physical reality is most diffi cult. It’s the place where you can most assuredly lose your values and indeed it’s the place to practice retaining them. This is one of the many paradoxes that the Universe offers us.

Many talk about being spiritual, but in reality, while many have spiritual

Page 13: Vision Magazine March 2010 Edition

thoughts, attend workshops and read books about spiritual beliefs, their daily actions rarely represent these values with consistency. This disconnect between who you deeply know you are and the actions you choose, (often unknowingly) is what contributes to feelings of unhappiness and the lack of fulfi llment and disconnection that you may experience.

Certainly living in disharmony with your beliefs puts you out of alignment with your true self and does not serve you or others well. Most beings live this way, unaware that they control the power to bring happiness into their lives.

So take a look now and determine how often you truly live your spiritual values. How often are you living in spiritual integrity?

Identifying Your Spiritual ValuesIn order to live in your Spiritual Integrity, you need to be clear on which values you

choose to own and where you currently stand with each of them.Saying that you are of love, peace and compassion is different than living a life that

refl ects these values. Being able to hold onto these values in your daily life, whether you are driving, waiting in line or in a challenging conversation, is an ongoing process. The goal is to live in harmony with the energies of the values that you choose to build your life upon. For many, these values include kindness, wisdom, acceptance, forgiveness, compassion, integrity, endurance, honesty and sound judgment.

Begin by defi ning the values you hold most dear. For many, working from love, being kind, being in service to others, holding a

place of calm, sitting in honesty, speaking your truth and walking your talk are key spiritual values. There are many others to consider; however being able to master one of these in your daily life is an enormous effort and a huge gift to all.

Once you have defi ned an initial list of values, begin with one to assess your current ability to stay in these energies. For instance, if kindness is a value that resonates with you, begin to thoroughly examine your kindness quotient.

When is it easy for you to be kind? When is it diffi cult?Do you have trouble being kind when you are hungry, tired or stressed? Are there certain people whom you fi nd it diffi cult to be kind to? Are there others

who are easy to be kind to?You will need to carefully watch your reactions and it is helpful to build the ability

to watch your responses to situations and people while events are taking place. This does not happen all at once and the power of observation is one of your most helpful tools.

Take this one step at a time. For now, begin to list the values you hold dear and choose to honestly review your actions to see which values you are truly using as you seek to make your life your practice.

Still Rollingby Jeffrey Zlotnik

Twenty Five Hundred years ago, there were no statues of the Buddha. There was just the man himself: Siddhartha

Gautama, the Prince who left the noble life to become a homeless wandering beggar—simply the Buddha. His search was for enlightenment, to understand the cause of all suffering. After his enlightenment, the Buddha continued to teach people how to live a simple, peaceful and compassionate life. After the Buddha’s death, many people were left wondering how the teachings would continue. The Buddha’s last two teachings were to be a

light unto yourself and to be diligent with your practice. Considering the theme of Compassionate Living, I believe our inner

reality refl ects our outer life. Many have turned to ancient traditions to balance the hectic pace of life and

refl ecting this, there are statues of the Buddha everywhere. The Buddha has become a trendy and cool item to have at home, work, in restaurants, and even on movie sets. People are attracted to the serene image of the Buddha and to me it is important to understand what the Buddha taught. The image of the Buddha is a reminder to live a simple and humble life.

Those of you who know the store called Buddha For You in San Diego, CA are sure to smile when you think of Alfred Baron, the 82-year-old man who started the business. He was a light unto himself and once you met him, he was hard to forget. Welcoming, informative and full of life, Alfred served his country in World War II as a member of the Army and went on to work for Bullocks and the May Company. He traveled the world to buy many items, resulting in his collection of rare Asian Art and Buddhist statues. In 2000, at the age of 72, he opened Buddha For You, which was, for him, the true love of his life. People would walk into the store and often spend hours looking for their perfect Buddha. Browsing over 2000 square feet of a huge array of Buddha statues could take awhile, so there was plenty of time to hear stories from Alfred about the country a particular statue was purchased from, or what had happened on that buying trip. If Alfred didn’t tell a story during the customers’ adventures, he might offer some friendly advice about how apple cider vinegar would heal all of their ailments.

Over the years Alfred did quite well selling Buddha statues, carrying the rarest pieces of the highest quality from around the world. People came from all over the United States just to see the latest collection.

Meanwhile, at the end of 2006, the desire to share the teachings of the Buddha actualized in the form of a little place in downtown San Diego known as The Dharma Bum Temple. It was a space for people to study and practice the teachings of the Buddha. There were no memberships and all meditation classes and Buddhist teachings were provided for free. It was and is a simple place, hidden from all who walk by and only sometimes recognizable from the little Buddha in the window (which was, by the way, purchased at Buddha For You.) At that time, we had no idea how connected The Dharma Bum Temple and Buddha For You

would become. At the end of November

2009, I received an e-mail from Alfred stating that Buddha For You was going to close. He had been telling people he was going out of business for a year. While no one believed him, it was true. Alfred let me know that unless The Dharma Bums could take over the store, it would close. As customers for many years, we knew the importance of the image of the Buddha. Knowing that thousands of people over the years had been there to buy statues that graced their homes and places of business, we wanted it to continue. There was one problem: We let Alfred know that we could not afford to buy his business. Alfred replied by letting us know that as of December 15, 2009, the store was ours.

So Maggie Lee and I now own and operate Buddha For You. In many ways, this was a gift from Alfred and a Buddha Blessing. We have struggled fi nancially with The Dharma Bum Temple and this was now a way in which we could support our effort to share Buddhism with the people of San Diego. Much of the profi t earned from the store would be used to support the Temple.

Maggie and I had met in April of 2007, a few months after the Dharma Bum Temple opened. Maggie is from Taiwan and came to the United States fi ve years ago. She has an MBA and graduated as a gemologist from The Gemological Institute of America in New York. I was raised in San Diego and graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in psychology. I lived in a Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan for a year in 2005 and became committed to sharing the teachings of the Buddha.

Together we also founded The Meditation Initiative, a non-profi t organization that shares secular meditation for free with the San Diego community. In 2009, The Meditation Initiative led over 2,300 people in meditation.

Continuing in Alfred’s tradition, when you come to Buddha For You we will tell you stories of the Buddha’s life and how it is portrayed in the different statues you see. We will teach you about the various Mudras (hand gestures) such as the Earth Touching Mudra or how Buddha’s serenity turned arrows into lotus petals, which fell to the ground. We will offer you guidance in your meditation practice, and selecting the right meditation cushion. If you are interested in setting up a shrine or sacred meditation space in your home, we can help you with this important task as well.

We currently have new Buddhist statues, singing bowls, incense and zafus (meditation cushions) from Nepal, Thailand, India and Tibet.

The lives of each one of us—Alfred, Maggie and myself—are so different, yet we have come together to share a message of compassion and love. We invite you to visit us, drink some tea, and take home a Buddha. We honor Alfred and thank him!

In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, prisoners living underground, prevented by chains from turning their heads, could only see what was before them, on the back wall of the cave. At a distance above and behind them was the mouth

of the cave. Between this source of light without, and all the prisoners within, was a low wall, like a dividing line. Nameless men passed along this wall carrying all sorts of vessels, statues, and figures of animals made of various materials. Some talked as their objects cast strange shadows on the opposite wall. As the prisoners conversed, they would name the shadows before them, and when they heard the echoes of voices behind them, they believed these came from the passing shadows. The Truth was literally nothing but the shadows of the images. In this cave-world of resentment and malice, military tactics, politics and competition, the prisoners

by Shaun Monson

were in the habit of struggling for power and conferring honors on those who were quickest to observe the passing shadows—until one of the prisoners was released and enlightened—led to see reality and given permanent illumination. He realized that the Truth was nothing like the mere shadows of images, and that the Sun and the Light were the cause of all the things he and his fellow prisoners had long been accustomed to behold.

What does this Allegory of the Cave tell us? How far is our nature enlightened…or unenlightened? English poet William Blake wrote, “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is: Infinite. For man has closed himself up, til he sees all things thru’ narrow chinks of his cavern.” Everything we see, we also interpret, like shadows on the wall of a cave. But shadows make sight difficult, so it becomes a matter of perception. Therefore, in order to gain clear perception, the first obstacle to be removed is the persona—also called the Ego.

There are times when this world appears on the brink of degenerating into massacre. Somehow, the population has adopted a great apathy. We see increased apathy toward suffering—human and animal alike. It’s as if society is growing numb; oblivious to any equality; blinded by ego and by gain. Where did this apathy come from?

By definition, apathy reflects a lack of interest in things that one does not consider important. Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters called it “an attraction to the peeling away of feeling.” What do we consider unimportant?

There was once a so-called “compassion experiment” conducted between two monkeys in adjacent cages at an animal research facility. The vivisectors rigged one of the cages with two levers. The first lever produced the most food, which was of a higher quality, while the second lever produced considerably less food and of

c u l t u r ea much poorer quality. However, when the monkey in the fi rst cage wanted more of the high-quality food, the other monkey in the adjacent cage received an electric shock. The second lever, on the other hand, the one that provided very little food and of a lesser quality, produced no shock affect whatsoever.

The fi rst monkey is therefore already capable of compassion. Once he learns about the shock, which he discovers quickly, he readily gives up the high-quality, more abundant food, and opts instead for the smaller portions of lower-quality food, (in essence, to go without) in order to save the other monkey from electric shock. Sadly, this tendency is lacking in a great many humans.

In other parts of the world we are killing each other recklessly, exhibiting not even a modicum of the monkey’s level of compassion. And yet here in this deplorable lab, which is a terrible existence for a monkey, he won’t purposely cause another monkey pain and suffering, if he can avoid it, (which he can) even to the extent of giving up more of his favorite food.

Human beings continue to show selfi shness and a desire to kill others for money, and any kind of gain. But what is to gain? Sadly the answer is: the gaining of people, places and things—nothing but nouns.

All this has to do with dominion—man over man, man over woman, man over animals. In fact, throughout history all equal rights have been a struggle against dominion—human rights, civil rights, women’s rights, animal rights, etc. The list goes on.

The question is often asked, “When will peace and happiness prevail on earth?” And the answer always is, “When the ‘without’ is as the ‘within’...and we treat them both as equally possible.” Lasting peace and happiness are indeed possible; they just can’t come from objects...because objects don’t last. None of the objects in this world are meant to give happiness to anyone. The mind vainly seeks to fi nd such happiness in these objects. But happy are they who are free from egotism and who are not swayed by the cravings of sense pleasure. Nor does happiness come from our bodies, which are protoplasm, because they won’t last either—for bodies are objects too, and every object in the fi eld of time grows old.

Peace and happiness, therefore, comes from realizing just how old we really are—the True Selves—which are ageless and timeless. So the only question is how can we begin to recognize this more often, day by day? Which way should we turn? The answer is inward. As Victor Hugo proclaimed, “There, inward, we compare the serenity of the heart with the serenity of the skies and open ourselves to the thoughts that fall from that Unknown.”

It is from your own peace of mind that a peaceful perception of the world arises. This is how we leave appearances and approach reality. True knowledge replaces

perception. When the human engine works as one: the organs of the body, perceptions of the mind, matters of the heart, and the components of the soul—when there is a marriage between these four cylinders of our mortal/spiritual engines, and all are synchronized, then we are no longer stuck. And that is precisely the kind of unity that spreads to others. The internal becomes external. Civilization can then become awakened at the level of the heart, which is to say: harmonious; at peace. And not only peace within ourselves, but peace with other human beings; peace with nature beings, and peace with the animal beings. It means peace with all beings and with all expressions of life—the very defi nition of Unity.

Writer/fi lmmaker Shaun Monson’s credits include the award-winning documentary Earthlings which is about the suffering of animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research. He is currently working on Unity, which is volume two of the Earthlingstrilogy. His comedy Bad Actors, a certifi ed Dogme 95 fi lm, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001. After 9/11 he directed a one-hour documentary on the Taliban called Holy War, Unholy Victory, hosted and narrated by Academy Award winning actor George Kennedy (Cool Hand Luke). Shaun has also written several screenplays, including a biopic on legendary fi lmmaker Orson Welles. (www.earthlings.com, www.unitythemovie.com).

Aries: Temperance (3 of Cups) 3/21-4/19Patience is more than a virtue; it is a necessity for managing the currents of life. Even in your most emotional moments, you can draw upon this energy to fi nd peace. Patience is not aimless waiting; it is mindful awareness of the right moment. Your emotions will get the best of you this month if you react without that awareness. Stay in the moment and observe the changing tides before launching out unknowingly. An exciting circumstance around the 16th may tempt you to go looking for the pot of gold. Enjoy the moment and move on. Taurus: Lovers (3 of Swords) 4/20-5/21Relationships are best experienced between two individuals. However, to your dismay, that will not be the case this month. You will fi nd that a connection you are trying to make is interrupted by an outside infl uence. If this is a person, it is likely that he/she will interfere with your channel of communication. Do your best to ensure that what you say is being understood. In terms of an important decision, get ready for an unexpected detour. What you think you want will be challenged by an annoying factor around the middle of the month. Be fl exible! Gemini: Hierophant (6 of Cups) 5/22 – 6/21Have you ever considered how much of your perspective contains residue of your past? Your emotional memory was storing information long before the logical mind could process it. As a result, many of your beliefs are founded upon memories that were never logical. If you don’t challenge your emotional thoughts, you will inevitably fi nd experiences to reinforce them. This feedback loop keeps you locked in primitive and refl exive thought patterns. Create a new philosophy to live by, instead of tolerating a “that’s just the way I am” mentality. Someone you have respected in the past comes back into your life around the 20th.Cancer: World (6 of Wands) 6/22 – 7/22 Recognition can come in different forms and for many reasons. This month you’ll receive something equivalent to a standing ovation. You deserve to be recognized for your efforts and so you will be. If professionally focused, your acclaim could be a promotion, raise or bonus. If relationship focused, you will receive adoration and praise. If personally focused, you will accomplish a private goal that brings with it a sense of deep satisfaction and a new perspective on your place in the world. Your worldview is an extension of your self-view; if you want to change the world, begin with yourself. Leo: Sun (Ace of Cups) 7/23 – 8/23A deep feeling of self-confi dence permeates your month as you fi nd ways to express your truest feelings. This doesn’t imply only rainbows and sunshine; in fact, your courage to speak up for yourself may shock others. Don’t be surprised if something you say resurrects an issue you thought was dead. Trust yourself. Confi dence derived from external acceptance is, at best, fl eeting. Self-acceptance, on the other hand, offers liberation from the obsession to please. Take note of situations in which you sacrifi ce your integrity for the sake of approval. Around the 25th, an emotional experience will call for celebration. Virgo: Emperor (Page of Wands) 8/24 – 9/22The competing forces of freedom and responsibility seem to be the common theme this month. Your growing restlessness only exacerbates your frustration with obligations. Before throwing caution to the wind or restricting childlike impulses, fi nd ways to give each their deserved expression. Be the parent to your inner child, but have fun too. In the area of work, allow your imagination to lead; then bring new vision to your current projects. An important someone may reward you for this creativity. An exciting message arriving at the end of the month will lead to an adventure.

Libra: Wheel of Fortune (10 of Pentacles) 9/23 – 10/23 A productive phase has either delivered results you are satisfi ed with, or inspired you to pursue something even bigger. You are in a wonderful place of growth and opportunity; to make the most of it, you will really need to focus your energy. Half-hearted goals or unformed visions could produce distorted outcomes. If you have been struggling, your diligence will pay off (assuming you’ve been diligent) in the form of greater stability or a monetary reward. Circumstances regarding real estate or an inheritance will arise at the beginning of the month; by the end of the month, things should be very interesting.Scorpio: Death (7 of Pentacles) 10/24 – 11/22Out with the old and in with the new. There’s no better time to cut away the excessive foliage and make space for new growth. During this transition, it would be wise to assess your possessions, not in terms of their worth, but rather, in terms of why you value them as such. If you cling to things out of obligation or for security, they will only stunt your growth. Worn out objects, relationships and attitudes must also be discarded in this process. A situation you’ve put a lot of effort into will fi nally yield results during the fi rst week of the month.Sagittarius: Justice (Page of Pentacles) 11/23 – 12/21 A thorough examination of your goals will lead to clearer objectives. While faced with questions about resources, fi nances and skills, you must rely upon your own dispassionate views. It can be challenging not to give in to societal pressures of success, especially in a system that places value on what you do over who you are. You may consider how higher education, specialized training or other ambitious aims will provide the experience you need to make changes in your life. However, be sure to honor how this information adds to the quality of your life. Legal issues around the 5th need your attention.Capricorn: Empress (Ace of Swords) 12/22– 1/20 The creative force of your mind can be used to bring harmony to a seemingly hectic situation. Your inner authority must rely more upon the feminine energy of reconciliation. Heart-centered strategies are more apt to be accepted. If you try to force your own agenda, you will evoke a battle. Take your time to create a plan, but then be decisive in your actions—vacillating will cause others to assume you are incompetent. Issues related to motherhood arise around the 10th. This brings up important lessons about how to nurture yourself and others.Aquarius: High Priestess (6 of Swords) 1/21 – 2/18Something hidden will be revealed. Whether this is connected to you or another person, it will provoke new movement. Fear of the unknown causes anxiety, yet when you try to avoid uncomfortable feelings, you move further away from a clear solution. The chaos in the background will likely simmer down after the 8th; it would behoove you to mindfully face the situation. If possible, take a short trip to clear your mind. New information about your job will prompt you to make a diffi cult decision—do you stay or do you go? Pisces: Fool (Page of Cups) 2/19 – 3/20After painful emotional experiences, the common reaction is to try to avoid them in the future. And, although learning from your mistakes often means that you don’t repeat them, losing trust in yourself and being skeptical of others only alienates you from healing past pains. Pain is often a companion to the pleasure of love, but by being overprotective of your feelings, you deprive yourself of love’s full experience. Take a risk, be vulnerable, open your heart and speak from that place of sensitivity. If you’re in a long-term relationship, you will also benefi t from forgiving and moving on.

The Power of Community:

Slashing the Cost of Going Solar

by Dave Llorens

Everyone wins when we reduce our carbon footprint. It’s healthy for the environment, our families and our wallets. Individually or within a household, we can practice small, yet effective habits to see this through;

we might recycle, grow a vegetable garden or carry reusable bags to the store. At the other end of the spectrum are large-scale green practices, such as going

solar. While equipped with the ability to create a massive reduction in carbon footprint, the process of going solar often requires more time, money and energy than is convenient for the average person. Studies from the International Energy Agency (www.iea.org) have shown that solar energy accounts for less than 0.1

percent of electricity produced in the United States. In 2008, I started One Block Off the Grid (1BOG) to address this incredible shortage through the facilitation of group purchase of residential solar.

Prior to that, I had been working at a solar company, managing every aspect of residential solar installations. I realized that the conventional process of going solar is complicated, expensive and far from user-friendly. It involves researching solar technologies, installers and local rebates, and being able to identify the differences between a kilowatt and a kilowatt-hour. All of this deters homeowners from actually taking the leap and going solar.

By creating “safety in numbers” through communities of interested homeowners, we can address the two main pain points associated with going solar: the process is expensive and arduous. Homeowners don’t need to become electricians when they update their homes’ wiring, so why should they become solar experts when they want to power their homes?

Purchasing solar power in a group is a safe, affordable and simple way to go solar and a means to rapidly boost solar energy use across the country. Through the concept of bulk discounts, the program negotiates lower rates from solar installers and provides unbiased, vendor-agnostic support to streamline the process.

Communities of homeowners are created through grassroots outreach and social networking to harness massive purchasing power (this typically yields a 15 to 20 percent discount from market rates).

Cities for the community programs are selected according to whether it would actually save money for homeowners to buy solar panels. In many places, residential solar power yields such high savings from electricity bills and local government incentives that its returns outweigh the initial costs within five years.

1BOG community participants are given impartial advice from solar experts without getting the “hard sell.” They know they can pick up the phone and get the answers and information they need, which boosts their confidence in the technology. To date, we’ve run campaigns in San Francisco, Sonoma County, San Diego, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Denver, Coachella Valley, Phoenix, Northern

T h e P h y s i c s o f M i r a c l e sTapping Into the Field of Consciousness Potential

by Richard Bartlett, DC, ND

My life, which is never what one could call entirely normal, turned completely bizarre in February 1997 when I saw Superman as a three-dimensional hologram while I was engaged in my busy chiropractic

practice. Yes, it probably was a hallucination, but this particular one enabled me to heal the eyesight of a child instantly!

I had driven up from Seattle to Livingston, Montana, where I was practicing as a chiropractor for the weekend in the offi ce I owned. Having slept very little and worked all day, the veil between fantasy and reality, or alternate dimensions of possibility, was thinner than usual for me. I still don’t know what really happened, but the myth surrounding those events will do just fi ne. When confronted with something I did not know how to help or to heal, my subconscious mind offered to me the image of George Reeves as Superman, a powerful and useful archetype from my childhood.

One of Superman’s many abilities is the power of x-ray vision, a very useful tool for a doctor to possess. I actually saw, through the projected image of Superman’s x-ray ability, what was wrong with my little patient. I have never been one to question when the weird or wonderful shows up to offer me assistance. I acted immediately on the information I was presented with. Something new and amazing occurred, and the little girl was healed in that very moment.

The very next day after the “Superman Event,” as the myth has come to be called, there was something vastly different about my energy. Suddenly the act of lightly touching a patient with focused intent created dramatic, and often startling changes. Bones would realign themselves, patterns of chronic pain would disappear, often with only one brief session, and scoliosis curvatures would realign

continued on page 41

right before my eyes.As time went on, this phenomenon seemed to grow stronger. Sometimes it

revealed new and marvelous outcomes each week. Chronic conditions began to change even though they were often not even a conscious focus for the treatment. In addition, people began to report that their emotional states, belief patterns—their very lives—were mysteriously being transformed. Better still, these changes appeared to continue over time.

I began to read books about quantum physics in an effort to understand and explain just what was happening with my “energy thing.” It was within the more esoteric aspects of quantum fi eld theory that I began to form the foundational principles that underlie what is now called Matrix Energetics.

Mathematics and physics are unconscious symbolic languages. They are meant to stimulate higher brain function—not the hired hand of the left brain’s higher analytical functions, but, instead, the right-brain awareness of symbolism and interconnectedness. The problem is that we have made science a closed system. The equations we devise to explain the unexplored or unknown have to make “sense” to our left brain’s way of thinking and perceiving. If it does not make sense and fi t into our closed loops of reality, then we will just chop pieces off until it does. You cannot imagine how many times this has happened in the history of physics.

The problem with the classical model of physics is that the x factor of consciousness is not taken into account. Without the acknowledgment of the role consciousness plays in our experiments performed in life’s laboratory, what you get are the unconscious expectations of the observers performing the experiments. The standard model in physics is a closed system. In a closed system, the effects of consciousness are excluded. In such a system, there is no room for miracles.

Healing and disease are two parts of the same equation of a closed loop. In a closed system, you can only get out what you put in. I think this is one reason why you only see or hear about miracles occasionally. Dissolve the ideas that healing and disease are a polarity and that one can’t exist without the other. In an open system that is not true. In an open or so-called free energy system, you can get more energy out than you put in.

Our theme this month is Compassionate Living. As I talk with Shari Arison, author of Birth I am reminded that compassion comes from a place of no judgment. Arison’s demeanor during our discussion is

forthright and her thoughts are brief. Her words are simple yet powerful and her beliefs about how we each can change the world around and within us are direct and to the point. I appreciate this as my world can seem incredibly complex at times.

Vision Magazine: How do you think the world is changing?Shari Arison: The world is changing in many, many ways. I feel that we are

changing on all levels–personal, inter-personal, community and country-wise and globally. I believe that everything is a refl ection of what goes on within ourselves, and that the change is happening both within and without. The old is falling apart–all that is not good and not working is coming out–like pus oozing from a wound–and something is being born; something purer, nicer and better.

VM: What do you think each of us can do, on a daily basis, to transform ourselves on an internal level?

SA: In order to transform ourselves, we must look inside and connect to our inner voices, and to peel off the layers that have accumulated through life. It is important to get through to the layers about the ways we were brought up and get to the things that hurt, as well as the different life experiences that made us protect ourselves. There are layers upon layers. And in order to make the transformation, we need to peel off the layers. We need to see where they’re coming from—if we’re angry, hurt or sad—to really know what’s going on. And then: Release it, and reach your inner core and your inner essence.

VM: How do you think people can turn diffi cult times in their lives in to learning experiences?

SA: I think with a lot of awareness. And most importantly, understand that everything in life comes about in order to teach us a lesson, so that we can grow and connect with ourselves and to come to a better place. I think if we see every life lesson, no matter what it is—no matter how it hard it is, as a gift in which to grow—that in itself makes a big difference.

VM: How we can support others who are less fortunate?SA: I think, for me, the best way to support others is to help them with tools.

Our foundation, The Essence of Life, and I, do a lot of giving with an emphasis on education. I believe it is important to give tools to empower people so that they can stand on their own two feet. I always say it is like giving the fi shing rods rather than the fi sh, because if you give it away it causes dependency.

VM: What do the words “compassionate living” mean to you?SA: To me, compassion is the basis of everything. When I talk about inner

transformation, what I mean is that we need to care for ourselves; we need to

continued on page 46

care in a way that we respect and listen to ourselves and to our inner voices.

And when we talk about caring for others, we need to understand that each and every one of us has our good and our not-so-good [aspects]. So, when we look at it this way, we can connect to the inner goodness and be more

caring. We can lend a helping hand. It is important for people

to understand that it doesn’t take money and it doesn’t take power, to

lend a hand. Essentially it is just helping someone across the street, or giving him or

her a smile and brightening their day; it is caring about someone other than yourself. VM: What do you believe your life’s work is

about? SA: It’s about transformation—by making a

difference and making changes—and by generating conversations as well as generating acts of human kindness that will transform the world. You know, we are all inter-connected; we are all part of the same puzzle. We all share this globe. If you hurt others, you are hurting yourself. When you help others, you are helping yourself.

VM: For those with very little, or no material wealth, how do you think they can transform their lives?

SA: We all basically want the same thing. Of course, we all need food and water and housing and we all deserve to breathe clean air. Aside from this, I think

Kevin Trudeau, an author and speaker who claims that natural alternatives, rather than standard western medicine, can cure

diseases, has caused quite the controversy amongst audiences. His claims are certainly thought-provok-

ing, and he will speak at this month’s Health Free-dom Expo, a three-day event dedicated to informing

people about the benefi ts of natural health. Recently, Vi-sion Magazine spoke with Trudeau to fi nd out more about

what lies behind the controversy.

Vision Magazine: What prompted you to get in the line of work you’re in?

Kevin Trudeau: It was really an ongoing process. I knew I wanted to have a successful career. I also became motivated

to work on my own health. I saw how so many other people were unhealthy and not fi nancially successful. I started to gain many helpful insights and then found myself helping

others with this knowledge.

Truth Revealed:A Conversationwith Kevin Trudeauby Sydney L. Murray

When I was 20 years old, I was diagnosed with a deformed heart. The medical community of America told me that my condition was incurable. Then I met a Harvard medical doctor who was a surgeon during the Korean War and afterward, gave up surgery and prescription medicine for homeopathy. He told me that my heart condition was curable—just not in America, and that I had to go to Germany or Switzerland for alternative treatments that the FDA [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] had made illegal here. He said this was because these natural treatments cannot be patented and the medical community of America is more concerned with profi tability than healthcare

quality. So I went and got a live cell treatment and was cured in 90 days. Then I wondered, What other treatments are illegal in the U.S.? I traveled fi ve

million miles to over 60 countries and interviewed over 5,000 doctors who are curing every disease without drugs and surgery. I fi rst sought out this information for my own health. I haven’t been sick—even with a cold—and I haven’t taken any drugs in over 25 years. After experiencing this success with my health, I wrote my books so that I could educate others about this lifesaving information.

VM: What would be the one natural cure, above all others, that you think people should know about?

KT: There isn’t one natural cure. Rather, people need to know what is causing their illnesses. Why are so many people sick in America today? Why do we have the highest rates of obesity, diabetes and cancer? I thought that we were supposed to have the best healthcare in the world, but we have the least healthy people.

More people in America take prescription drugs than in any other country. What causes disease are the drugs themselves. Statistically, the American Medical Association has proven that drugs are the number one cause of disease in America. If you want to be healthy, the fi rst thing you should do is reduce the amount of drugs you are taking. That is the cure. It’s like the guy who goes to the doctor and says, “Doctor, every time I hit my foot with a hammer, it hurts. What’s the cure?” Well, stop hitting your foot.

In America, doctors are trained to only treat the symptoms, not to ask what is causing them. And the treatment is always a poisonous, chemical drug with pages of side effects. All they do are suppress the symptom by begging the body to do something unnatural.

VM: Where do you see our country heading in the next two years, especially with the healthcare crisis?

KT: There is no healthcare crisis in America. We have the best crisis care in the world. So, why are people saying we need healthcare reform? If you read all the reforms, they’re about increasing taxes so that all illegal immigrants and

l i v i n g a r t sunemployed people will get health insurance. That’s not reform, that’s bankruptcy. That’s not improving the quality of healthcare for anyone.

I don’t have health insurance and I don’t believe that anyone should. I think that it’s a scam and a rip off. You have car insurance to be covered in case of a catastrophic situation.

I think that healthcare reform should change people’s ideas about what health insurance should and should not be used for. Insurance should not be used for habitual checkups at the doctor. People should just have a catastrophic policy in case of emergencies. And if people knew about non-drug alternatives, then they wouldn’t need to go to the doctor and get prescriptions so frequently. Instead, they could save money and possibly not have to use their catastrophic insurance policy at all.

VM: What do you practice daily that keeps you healthy?

KT: Sleep. I believe that going to bed before 10 p.m. and waking up by 6 a.m. is one of the most important things that you can do. The healing hormones are released between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. and only if you are in deep REM sleep. Through this, your body can heal itself.

When you are young, your body is producing so many human growth hormones that you can do anything. Your recovery time is amazing. As you age,

this is no longer the case and so good sleep is essential. There are lots of different things you can do to ensure that you’re getting good sleep as well, such as reducing caffeine, avoiding high fructose corn syrup, getting a magnetic mattress, exercising, walking, and laughing.

VM: What are you speaking about at the Health Freedom Expo in March?KT: That will depend on what’s current in the world in March. When I get closer to the event, then I will

seriously start considering the subject matter, but it will be a lot about health and any new breakthrough cures.

VM: What can people do to improve their fi nancial health based upon your new books?KT: I think 2010 is going to be a horrible economic year and that the residential housing market will stay

fl at or go down another 25 percent. No reports have been released to the mainstream media, but the facts are that we have record foreclosures. We also have the highest percentage ever of delinquent mortgages. This is going to be catastrophic for the residential market. The commercial market is going to implode—probably by the fall. This will also be catastrophic for our economy. We have a record number of vacancies. People should start putting in some time in home-based businesses at night and on the weekends in order to diversify their incomes. I think that Internet-based opportunities are good, and people should consider global business opportunities. I’m a big proponent of the organization called The Global Information Network, which allows people to earn money and provides an opportunity to meet affl uent and likeminded others from around the world. We have 110 countries represented in The Global Information Network.

VM: What do you see on the horizon for yourself in 2010?KT: I have a pretty full schedule this year. I am still doing a radio show two days a week, and it will probably

be on fi ve days a week by the end of this year. I’ll be doing a lot of conferences with Global Information Network members around the world. I will probably have a new book coming out later in the year based on my audio series, “Your Wish is Your Command.”

VM: Is there anything else you would like to add?KT: I think people need to know that there are secrets when it comes to health and fi nancial success. Everyone

can attain these successes; they just need to know how. And what I’m doing is trying to teach them that information so they can start seeing the spectacular results that I have been so fortunate to have had over the years.

The Health Freedom Expo will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center on March 26-28. Visit

Israel and Palestine: The Bereaved UniteA Conversation with Robi Damelin, The Parents Circle – Families Forum

by Elyssa Paige

If you choose to turn on the news while comfortably nestled in your living room, you’re bound to hear about the casualties of war in faraway lands. These death tolls are not just numbers on the rise—they represent mothers,

fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. Can you imagine what it’s like to lose a child through war? That’s what Robi

Damelin experienced. Her son, David, was an Israeli soldier killed by a Palestinian sniper on March 3, 2002. He was 28 years old.

It’s easy to get angry, to crave the taste of revenge. But this is precisely what perpetuates violence and it was not the choice that Damelin made.

Originally from South Africa where she had been active in the anti-apartheid movement, Damelin came to Israel in 1967, raised two children, and ran a successful public relations firm. Needless to say, when David was killed, her priorities began to change. That’s when she discovered The Parents Circle – Families Forum.

Since its inception in 1995, The Parents Circle has been uniting Israelis and Palestinians who have lost immediate family members in the conflict. Rather than using tragedy as a motive for revenge, The Parents Circle’s 500 members work to promote reconciliation through education and the exchange of personal narratives. They are changing the mindset that led to the violence in the first place. Some of the non-profit organization’s groundbreaking projects include high school classroom sessions; a toll-free telephone line for Israelis and Palestinians to create

a dialogue; “Cartooning in Conflict;” an international art exhibition; seminars; workshops; and “Good Intentions,” a television series in Arabic and Hebrew.

Damelin’s path has led her to become one of The Parents Circle’s leading voices for reconciliation and peace. Two and a half years after David was killed, the sniper was caught. What was Damelin’s reaction? She sent a letter of reconciliation to his family—a true test of her beliefs in action. Recently I had the great opportunity to speak with her about her personal journey, the progress The Parents Circle has made, and her hopes for the future.

Vision Magazine: What does compassion mean to you and how does it help to create a transition from battlefield to common ground?

Robi Damelin: In a way, you can intertwine the word compassion with empathy. If you don’t have empathy and some form of understanding, you can never come to forgiveness. For me, compassion is not feeling sorry for anybody; it’s empathy and understanding, which leads to forgiveness in many ways. And what does forgiveness really mean? Does it mean giving up your right to justice? Does it mean that the person can do it again? Or that we should turn the other cheek? I’ve asked great thinkers from all over the world for their definition of forgiveness, from archbishops to rabbis to imams. The definition is such a personal

Images from international exhibition“Cartooning in Conflict”

one; this is why I tend to use the word understanding more than forgiveness—because if you understand, this brings you back again into compassion and empathy.

VM: Can you talk about the importance of being what you call “pro-solution,” rather than pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian?

RD: It’s the most natural trait for human beings to take sides. It makes you feel good about yourself. The only problem is that it isn’t really helping anybody to be pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian. Neither of us is going to disappear in a puff of smoke. And it’s not only on the ground level; it’s also the politicians and policy makers who find that taking sides is much easier than being part of the solution. I think that people who take sides are part of the problem. It doesn’t help either of us. But if you wanted to support something like a Palestinian hospital or an Israeli school, that is not side-taking—that is support, which is very different. It would be so much more helpful for everybody if Muslims, Jews, Christians, or people who don’t believe in anything would stand together against violence in the Middle East.

VM: Why is it not enough to have, as you write, “another handshake on the White House lawn?” What will it take to create reconciliation on a grassroots level?

RD: I’m not certain that there can be a dignified solution to this situation without political agreements. But alongside the political agreements, there has to be something between the people on the ground to gain empathy. If you look at all of the agreements that were made—the Oslo Agreement, the Geneva Initiative, and many others—there isn’t room for any reconciliation process between the people. And without that, all political agreements will be temporary ceasefires until the next shot. Peace has to come from the people and that’s why the framework for the reconciliation process needs to be in place for after the agreements are signed.

VM: How did you move past the anger and the pain of losing your son?

RD: You never move past the pain. You learn to live with it next to you. Everybody has a recipe for bereavement and what you should be feeling. I found that a little bit difficult because everybody’s different. I searched very deeply into myself to see where my anger was coming from. It was really from the situation with my son because David didn’t want to serve in the Occupied Territories and I certainly didn’t want him to go. It was a huge dilemma for him. We had a long talk and he was absolutely torn. Sometimes I wonder who is in more pain or who is more frightened: the Israeli soldiers standing at the roadblocks or the Palestinians. I understood really early on that the man who killed David didn’t kill him because he was David; he killed him because he was a symbol of an occupying army. It’s not easy for me to say that. I have said it many times, but each time, it is difficult.

I can’t think of a better way to commemorate David’s name and to commemorate his spirit than through the work I’m doing. His whole being was in education and

his whole way of looking at life was to say that Israel should become an example to the world of what democracy really is.

VM: How did you get involved with The Parents Circle?RD: I was looking for something. I knew that I wanted to

contribute to stop the violence but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. Then Yitzhak Frankenthal, [the founder of The Parents Circle] invited me to a seminar. I was a little bit skeptical because I didn’t think that I wanted to mix with other bereaved people; I thought it would be very depressing. When I went to the seminar, it was the first time that I’d met bereaved Palestinian mothers and families and the first time I truly recognized that we shared the same pain. It brought home the fact that we could be a very powerful force if we worked together and spoke in one voice to stop the violence.

That was really the beginning of my journey with The Parents Circle. At the time, I had a PR office, but the work didn’t seem important to me anymore. I closed the office about five years ago and today, this is my whole life. I spend many months of the year traveling all over the world speaking, going into schools, creating new partners, and looking for ways to spread this message so that people will understand that there’s another way.

VM: Can you share a bit about The Parents Circle’s success with outreach and education?

RD: We do about 1000 classroom dialogues a year with 17-year-old kids in Israel. We were doing quite a lot of work on the Palestinian side but it has become very difficult since the Gaza War. We go into the classrooms of kids who have never met a Palestinian and suddenly they see a human being telling a personal story of loss. This creates a completely different atmosphere. Israelis don’t know Palestinians and vice versa. It’s hard to believe, but that’s the truth. Even though we live so close, we hardly know each other. If you go into an Israeli classroom and ask, “How many Palestinians do you know?” there will probably be none. They don’t know who’s living on the other side. It is true of the adults as well; they don’t know each other, so how can we ever create a situation of quiet and peace here when there is this fear of the unknown? Fear breeds violence and violence breeds more violence. Just knowing the person on the other side creates humanization.

We also had a toll-free telephone line between Palestinians and Israelis called Hello Shalom/Salaam, and there were more

than a million telephone calls. We’ve been given a grant from the European Union, so we’re going to upgrade the telephone line

and call it A Crack in the Wall. It will probably start in April or May via Facebook, Twitter and the Internet so that the whole world can be involved through our Web site [theparentscircle.com]. We may start with a question such as: “What do you think of the Arab Initiative? Let’s discuss.” There will be two virtual walls—one Palestinian and one Israeli, and you can send a note between the walls with what you think. There will be some translation and only violent language will be

censored. Something I imagine that will come out of this will be a crack in the virtual wall.

VM: In terms of peace efforts, has there been any support from policy makers in the region?

RD: This is the thing: People are really detached. Of course we’ve got politicians who agree with what we’re doing. We’re not affiliated with any political party so that we can embrace anybody who wants to come and be a part of what we are doing. We’re not a huge group. We’re 500 families, but we do a lot of work. We’re now working with Georgetown University, our academic partner, and this year, we’re going to do a lot of lobbying to create a committee in Parliament so that the reconciliation process can be in place. We’re just the ants on the ground working to create a future agreement. Everything we do is geared toward that.

VM: Do you believe that there will be peace where conflict has raged for thousands of years?

RD: If I didn’t believe that, then what am I doing? Miracles happen all over the world. In Germany, they talk to each other without walls—the wall is past between them. Who would have thought that it could happen with Jordan? And look what happened in South Africa. So I really think that miracles can happen for us as well. I can’t afford to give up hope.

VM: Do you have any advice to offer people who are seeking reconciliation and a compassionate path in their own lives?

RD: I don’t think that I’m qualified to tell people what to do. It’s very personal. I can only tell you one thing: When I wrote that letter to the family of the man who killed David, I gave up being a victim and that’s the beginning of the path of reconciliation. I think that for your own personal health and creativity, if you let go of that terrible block in your heart, you can, in a way, be healed.

There is an uncertainty in all of this. It’s not black and white; there is a huge area of grey. Sometimes I question my own feelings—not sometimes, but often. I received a very vicious letter from the sniper, out of the jail. I’m not sure if he wrote it, but I realized that it’s another test, like when I asked you about the definition of forgiveness. Does it mean that the person you want to understand has to become repentant? It’s not that simple. Regardless of who sent the letter, it’s the beginning of a dialogue. I don’t know where this is going to go. The one thing that I’m completely convinced of is that what we are doing is the right path to take.

Compassion Fulfilled - A Conversation with Louix Dor Demprieyby Sydney L. Murray

This has been an interesting month. So much has happened—some of it devastating, such as the loss of a friend; some surprising, like the reactions you may not want in a person whom you trust. When I think

of what compassion means to me, it’s to live with grace and have the forethought of love and kindness toward those who surround me. I have to admit that I did not always reach this lofty goal during the month. Instead, I have chosen to look at all of the kindness and generosity of spirit I have offered, overall, and be grateful for those moments of grace I experienced during a diffi cult time.

In the middle of this challenging month I had the good fortune to speak with Louix Dor Dempriey who has offered up his life to service and to bettering the world we live in. Some may question his motivations, but his words ring of a profound truth in my heart.

Vision Magazine: Tell me about your background and what infl uenced you to become the teacher you are today.

Louix Dor Dempriey: I hail from the Boston area. I am one of four children born to Italian-American parents and my education was the product of traditional public and private schools and four years of college. My spiritual life was thriving, alive and awake, from birth, and I had a deep knowing of who I was right from the get-go. I had many mystical and powerful experiences during childhood, such as being able to travel outside of my body and an in-person encounter with Jesus when I was 5 years old. He materialized and manifested himself in my room and

talked to me for about 15 minutes and shared with me two key revelations regarding my future—one that ended up happening at age 13 and another at around age 30.

People used to appear in my room, after they had passed away, and would talk to me about where they had gone and what they were doing. They would also give me words to share with their families [those who survived them].

A lot of these abilities—what people call “paranormal”—were with me from childhood. For example, people would call me and I would often pick the phone up before it rang and say

their name. It was always funny little things like that. I also had the ability to communicate with

animals. Wild animals used to walk right up to me and sometimes even touch me, so I knew there was

something going on. I continued in my earthly life while not really making a fuss over everything.

I didn’t think it was paranormal—it was just my life. I had a childhood dream to become an actor and movie star. I pursued acting voraciously and that led me, after college, to New York City, where I began training to be an actor. I eventually made my way to Hollywood and had a thriving career in show business doing TV, fi lm, commercials and voice-overs.

In May of 1990 I had a spiritual awakening and my crown blasted open. I went into Samadhi for a week. I didn’t sleep a wink or eat one morsel of food. I had so much ‘current’ running through my body that I had an experience of complete and total omnipresence. I could see and hear everything about everyone, everywhere, in or out of my presence.

This is what people call the “gift of safe healing” and it was awakened in my hands. I started, at that time, doing readings. People caught wind of what was going on, and they would ask me questions and ask for guidance. I began going into schools—junior high, high school, and college—to work with the guidance counselors. When the awakening happened, it just catapulted me into

the stratosphere. It became like a full-blown ministry. People were coming for readings and healings on their bodies, and it was quite amazing.

I then started having mystical experiences too, such as encounters with beings, ascended masters and angels, and extra-terrestrials. I started calling out to God. I was raised a Catholic but I left the church at 13 following one of those revelations from Jesus when I was 5. I was devastated to leave the church. I knew that as much as I loved my religion, it was too limiting for what I knew to be true. There were certain beliefs that I knew were not accurate, such as the devil and original sin. Other concepts, like fearing God and a God that punishes people, I did not believe in. As a child, I was constantly at odds with the priests. I would ask them questions that they could not answer.

When I left the church, I had nowhere to turn. All I knew was God, Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the angels and saints, so I began calling to them, “Please, tell me what is going on and what is happening to me. Send me someone who can help me.” I said that prayer every night in bed and after three months I met an individual who became a spiritual teacher for me. I was taken to a mystery school where the faculty awakened within me the ability to speak with, and to celestial beings. I would go into a trance state, which in Sanskrit is known as Bhava-Samadhi and these beings would coagulate in my body and minister through me.

I trained for four years and then my liberation, or enlightenment, happened on March 7, 1996 and I was off on my own ministry. I walked away from the world for the third time. I left my job, my school, and everything I had, and it was just me, God and the world.

And then people started coming. Money came in. I trusted and surrendered. In 1997, I had a vision—one which God had given me. I had an in-person encounter with Parmahansa Yogananda and he materialized in the room, put his hand on my head, and blessed me with my Sanskrit name Sri Pranananda. He came again, shortly thereafter, to announce the opening of my ashram. I didn’t know what any of this stuff meant and he said, “You don’t have to. You are it.”

Jump to ten years later and I was making pilgrimages around the world to sacred sites, and leading retreats, group events, seminars, workshops as well as doing private counseling, teaching classes, and guiding people individually.

In 1997 we fi nally had the means and enough people to form the foundation that bears my name. We incorporated and just last year, submitted our petition for non-profi t status. We’ve got three ashrams in Australia and the Mother Center is in Laguna Hills, as well as other centers and groups around the world.

I married in 2000 and began raising a family so I stopped most of my traveling. By early 2000, I wasn’t doing the pilgrimages anymore. I needed to help set up the foundation and take care of my kids. For now, my wife and two of my daughters are living in Hawaii. We’re still legally married but living apart—she is going through what she needs to go through right now. Our eldest child—a son, passed away three years ago at the age of 15. It’s been quite a ride. I have been through a lot of initiations and a lot of blessings.

VM: What led you to this life of service?LDD: There are two factors. One is my insatiable hunger for God, which was

there from birth. When I was young and I would sit in church every week, all I

Compassion Fulfilled - A Conversation with Louix Dor Demprieyby Sydney L. Murray

wanted to do was be an altar boy or the priest. I wanted to climb up on the altar. God was my overall driving force. But when I looked at the world, everything seemed wrong. People were cruel and mean; deluded by things that they chased and pursued that would never bring them happiness. I saw people not living the way I knew we were all meant to live—in peace, in joy, in love. I had an ache inside to help people fi nd deep inner peace and communion with God.

VM: Why do you think that having compassion in one’s life, mind and heart is so important?

LDD: Compassion is critically important. I defi ne compassion as seeing and experiencing the world and one’s life through someone else’s eyes and feeling body. To have compassion for others, to experience life through others’ eyes, is to have compassion for ourselves and it teaches us to care for and love other people unconditionally. Through this vehicle, we are taught to love, forgive, accept, cherish and nurture ourselves.

VM: You have taught the art of self-inquiry and you have said it’s one of the most powerful tools that we can use to grow as humans and liberate our souls.

LDD: This, too, is a most pivotal aspect of who I am and what I teach. Because there is nothing outside of self—we create everything in our world and in our environment. We create all of our relationships. We create everything that happens to us. We are the screenwriter, the director, the producer, the star, and

we are theatre itself. We are the driving force within our lives—the co-creators with God. So, we should always look within the self: “Why did I create this?” and “What is it teaching me?” This is how we master all of life’s lessons. Earth is God’s classroom. We’re here to remember, discover and restore our original, divine blueprint, which is our inherent divinity and to walk as God on Earth. That is why Earth is a paradise that was given to us, to enjoy as gods and goddesses. We can see that we were created by God, as God, and in God’s image.

We are like the creator, too. If we look at ourselves as the source of all and as the co-creator of everything, then we are fully accountable, we take full responsibility and this empowers us to see that anything we don’t like in our lives and in our circumstances, we have the power to change. We are here to incorporate and integrate all the aspects of our divinity and to balance, transmute, cleanse and calm the disassociated parts of self and the parts of us that are living in exile from God and love.

It goes back to self-inquiry because all you come into the world with is your consciousness. And all you leave with is the evolution of your consciousness. However you grow, integrate, or love, is the only thing you take with you. That self-inquiry is the single most powerful vehicle for becoming greater at offering unconditional love.

VM: So, self-inquiry is simply asking, “How do I feel?” and “Why did I create this situation?”

LDD: Yes, absolutely. “Why did I create this?” Everything is a blessing, whether it is painful or pleasurable; whether it is a win or a loss, a success or a failure. Everything is a gift. Everything we magnetize in our lives teaches us something. Sometimes it is to acknowledge the great things about ourselves so that we feel more confi dence, self-assuredness, and self-love. Other times, we magnetize

situations that may be confronting or confl icting, which helps us polish some of the rough edges of the crystal.

VM: If there were one thing that everyone can do—regardless of his or her belief structure—that would make the world a better place, what would it be?

LDD: Love everyone and everything all the time. It sounds lofty, but when put into practice—it’s quite a task— and it can be done. It’s easy to bless people and say, “I love you” when we’re in a prayer circle, at a retreat or while watching a sunset. But when someone is giving you the fi nger in traffi c, or when a waiter is being rude, this is when it is the most challenging to be forgiving and kind and to bless people. Or, when people are jealous or envious; one-upping you, or condemning you—this is when it is the most diffi cult to be loving and when God most needs you to be. Try your best to experience the world through other people’s eyes so that you have compassion and you are not just seeing it through your own fi lter of judgment.

Also, forgive everyone and everything. The power of forgiveness goes hand in hand with the power of apology. Ask for forgiveness. The healing and transforming power of this is immense. Most people have not even discovered the alchemical, transmutative power of true forgiveness. A lot of us think we forgive but we don’t—we may still hold judgment, and grudges. ‘I’ll forgive you if you forgive me. I’ll apologize if you apologize.’ Conditional apologies and conditional forgiveness is conditional love. To break the word down: It literally means for give—like giving as before. I am giving you my love as before the transaction or the altercation occurred. This is a high level of mastery, to go back to the same if not greater love for the person in the face of adversity. This is one of the most powerful gifts that we can offer. This makes the world better.

Lastly, don’t pollute. Be kind. Don’t hurt any living being—any animal, any plant, any part of the Earth or human. Be kind to everything and everyone. This is what you and I both know and it is one of the foundations of all the world’s major religions. “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.”

VM: What does “Compassionate Living” mean to you? LDD: Bless everyone all the time. When you practice true compassion, you

learn and acquire the gifts—the divine qualities of patience, forgiveness, mercy, perseverance, endurance, tolerance, understanding and wisdom. You exalt [these virtues] enough within yourself so that the gift you give to others is the gift you give to yourself, ultimately.

Inside The Reconnection with

Dr. Eric Pearlby Jean-Noel Bassior

Twelve years ago, on a sunny March morning, advertising executive Jeff Olsen lost control of his car, rolled

over eight times on the Interstate north of St. George, Utah, and skidded off the side of the road. “I probably fell asleep at the wheel,” says Jeff, who knows that he had cruise control on, but doesn’t remember much else. When rescue workers cut him free from the wreckage, both legs and his rib cage were crushed, his back was cracked in two places, his lungs had collapsed, his intestines had ruptured, and his right arm was completely torn out of its socket. “They had to amputate my left leg,” Jeff says matter-of-factly, adding that since his arm had been nearly

severed, he went through shock treatments in rehab to try to rejuvenate the nerves. “You won’t use your right arm very well again,” the doctors told him.

So in the fall of 2009, when Jeff and his wife Tonya attended Dr. Eric Pearl’s Reconnective Healing seminar in Los Angeles and Pearl asked if there was anyone in the audience who could not lift both arms above their head, Jeff stood up.

“Show me,” said Pearl. “I can just raise them this far,” Jeff started to say. Then, for the fi rst time since

the horrifi c accident, he lifted both arms straight up over his head and touched his hands together, as Pearl, from the stage, saw a look of disbelief cross Tonya Olsen’s face. Every morning, she had to comb her husband’s hair because he couldn’t raise his hand to his head. “I wasn’t sure what was happening,” Jeff told Pearl later. “It was very surreal.” He’d just had a spontaneous healing.

The next day, the Olsens and I chat with Pearl in his hotel suite overlooking the San Fernando Valley. Now, because of Jeff ’s encounter with Pearl, who shares his

healing abilities with so many, Jeff is able to lift his arms. He touches his hand to his head to show that he can still do it.

It all began, says Tonya, when she and her husband were painting their bedroom while listening to George Noory interview Pearl on Coast to Coast AM. The Olsens were fascinated. They fl ew to Los Angeles to attend his Reconnective Healing seminar. Jeff had read enough of Pearl’s book to know that some people report healings just from becoming aware that reconnective healing frequencies exist. And Pearl explains that anyone can tap into reconnective frequencies.

If you watch reconnective healers at work, you’ll see that they don’t touch the subject’s body, but make hand passes over and around it, exploring the energy fi eld. But these hand motions, says Pearl’s associate, Doug De Vito, who co-hosts the seminar, are just training wheels that help healers fi nd the energy. Both Pearl and De Vito stress that Reconnective Healing is not about technique.

The energy zeros in on what needs to be healed. “The less you know when a client comes in, the better,” Doug or Eric tells the audience. By just showing up as a “catalyst,” the Reconnective Healing practitioner invites energy to fl ow from a Source that knows exactly what’s needed and supplies whatever healing the client can accept.

So why was Eric Pearl, (a mild-mannered chiropractor and TV addict with three homes, two dogs and one Mercedes) tapped by the Universe, God or some other Higher Source to bring these new frequencies onto the planet? He hasn’t a clue.

Pearl’s life swerved off course in the summer of 1993 when his receptionist dragged him to Venice Beach to get his cards read by a woman he describes as a “Jewish gypsy.” The reading was not memorable, but the encounter changed his life. “There’s very special work I do,” the woman told him, explaining that she could connect meridian lines in his body to the Earth’s grid lines, and then to the planets and stars. Feeling a crazy urge to do the work, Pearl signed up. After the fi rst session his bed lamp turned on by itself and his house seemed fi lled with unseen visitors. The next (hot August) day, he felt chilled to the bone. Something

TRY THIS AT HOMEFeeling the EnergyRelax, hands at your sides. Raise your forearms from your elbows, so that

your palms face each other—one upward and one downward—with about 6

inches in between. Allow them to naturally rotate, so that your right hand is

pointing toward a ten o’clock position, and your left hand toward two o’clock.

Wait for a sensation to arrive in your palms. You may feel pressure, tingling,

heaviness, buoyancy, electricity, air density changes and/or a “pushing and

pulling” feeling—it can come in many forms. Play with the energy: Feel for it, fi nd it and stretch it. Imagine fl ipping a ping

pong ball, or playing with a Slinky. Don’t try to “send” the energy. Just allow

yourself to feel for it and receive it. “It’s like listening with your hands,” says

Pearl. “It’s not what you feel; it’s that you feel.” Self-HealingAllow the sensation of the energy to appear in your hands. The more you

notice it, the stronger it becomes. “The sensations are always there, once we

bring our attention and awareness to the frequencies,” says practitioner Kaille

Padgett, of Richmond, Virginia. “Feel the energy move through your body,

getting larger and larger,” says Pearl, “then slip into the silent gap between your

thoughts and stay there for as long as you like, until you realize you’re ‘back.’

Know that the healing has taken place, and then let it go. Releasing the energy

and not looking back is your thanks and acceptance.”

inside him had changed. “I was not the same person,” he writes in his book, The Reconnection: Heal Others, Heal Yourself, “My odyssey had begun.”

I ask Pearl how he’s dealt with the strange and miraculous course his life has taken, and if it has changed him. “I don’t know. That’s like asking, ‘how did I handle curly hair?’” he responds. “I guess I’m more aware of spirituality. I mean, the fact is, something causes trees to grow from acorns and children to be born with two eyes and one nose—I’m much more aware of that. But whatever we want to call it, it’s not contained in any one religion.” Pearl says that religions are like windows; the view from each is different, but all are correct.

“I guess I just allow myself to stay in the state of awe I was in when I fi rst saw it happen,” says Pearl. Years ago, Deepak Chopra told him to “remain childlike” in the face of these strange events, and he’s followed that sage advice. As a practitioner, “you have to be present. There’s nothing to hide behind, so you become responsible for that ‘something’ being present, too—and sharing the space. That’s the challenge we meet: to discover more of our center. And in that lies our own healing.” He pauses. “And in that lies our own Reconnection.”

Opening in 1993 and named after preeminent Nazi-hunter and Holocaust survivor Simon Wiesenthal, The Museum of Tolerance offers a unique approach to the museum experience by engaging visitors to not only experience history,

but to elicit an understanding of the ongoing connections between communities, groups and individuals. The visitor can feel like an integral part of the larger scheme of events. In this way, the museum makes an impact on an event that otherwise may seem beyond the scope of understanding or even language to describe it. Experiencing and participation in a moving and fl uid discourse not only of words, but also of images and interactive scenes, supports the participants’ feeling of involvement.

On one hand, living with awareness and compassion is a very personal journey, and can start from within and radiate outward—but at the same time, the personal can be political. The impact of individual and personal choices on a group and the wider world resonates strongly when one experiences the museum fi rst hand, or takes part in its plethora of historical, educational and social resources. The Museum of Tolerance is not only a fi tting subject for compassionate living, but also a poignant reminder of the ongoing price of peace, as well as a marker of where humanity has been and where we are headed.

Visitors are given a passport card, and follow a real child whose life was altered by the events of the Holocaust. In fact, the visitors who gather together in the space of refl ection and learning are part of the human connection, and are hopefully made more aware of the

current relevance of these issues. Some examples of what one will

fi nd at the museum are a mix of views and perspectives, such as a special speaker series, where one can hear from a Holocaust survivor, as well as a former White Supremacist. It is taken a step further with From Hate to Hope, where guests are brought into the conversation between a perpetrator and victim—and take part in the reconciliation process. Although the museum highlights the Jewish Holocaust during WWII, its mission is to “confront all forms of prejudice and discrimination in our world today.” Its current exhibit Courage: The Vision to End Segregation. The Guts to Fight for It features the struggles to end racial segregation in public schools and includes an installation entitled: Para Todos Los Niños: Fighting Segregation in California, which focuses on Latino families and segregation in Southern California. The exhibit runs from February 8-August 23, 2010.

Please visit The Museum of Tolerance located at: 9786 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035. The museum is closed on Saturdays, and admission to the Tolerance Center and Holocaust Exhibit is $15 for adults, and $11 for students. Details can be found on their website: www.museumoftolerance.com or call 310.533.8403.

Salba® Whole Food Bars Put a New Spin on Energy Food

I am one of those people who just likes a little bit of food here and there versus a huge meal. I can take six hours to eat a sandwich. I am always looking to get my

essential nutrients in tasty little packages. Thankfully I found Salba Whole Food Bars. I seek my nutrients from real food.

Each Salba bar contains 12 grams of Salba seed, which translates into 2,500 mg of heart healthy Omega-3 essential fatty acids, 7 grams of fi ber, 5 grams of protein, plus 10 percent of the RDV of vitamin c, calcium and iron–all in one 190-calorie bar. Each of the fl avors, Cranberry Nut, Mixed Berry and Tropical Fruit are not only delicious but also safe for people with special diet needs. They are sweetened with organic agave nectar which has been proven to have the lowest glycemic response of all sweeteners. This means they help stabilize blood sugar and encourage slow, sustained energy release so they are safe for people with diabetes. They are made with 100 percent plant-based ingredients, making them certifi ed vegan. Plus the gluten-free oats ensure the bars are also safe for people with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

Salba has been called nature’s most nutritionally perfect food. Nutrition experts such as Dr. Sherrill Sellman, a naturopathic doctor, is a big fan of Salba bars. She praises Salba as a key food in helping combat the increase in cardiovascular disease among women and said, “One of the newest foods in the fi ght for healthy hearts

is an ancient seed called Salba, which is similar to fl ax. It contains eight times more omega 3s than Atlantic salmon. It’s also rich in antioxidants, magnesium, fi ber, iron, vitamin C, calcium and folate, making it the perfect vegetarian source of key heart-healthy nutrients for women in particular.”

Sellman adds, “Salba has the highest known whole-food source of omega-3 fatty acids found anywhere in nature. It contains a perfect 4:1 ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s. That ideal ratio is required for optimal health and hormones: regulating heart rate, blood pressure, blood clotting, fertility, immune support, and reduction of infl am mation. Infl ammation is now understood to play a major role in chronic illnesses, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.”

All of this nutrition goes nowhere unless it is good and you will eat iy. Salba Whole Food Bars pack a lot of nutrition in a great tasting product.

Salba Whole Food Bars are available at most local health food stores and select Whole Foods Market locations nationwide. Buy them online at www.salba.com or by calling 888.899.3779.—SLM

Lip to Toe I love Pheylonian candles and I love the fact that the company producing them— Pheylonian Production Kohr—is committed

to sustainable practices as well as using the highest quality natural ingredients. I am also enchanted by their story.

Philoxia’s website says it best: “Now, in these times of Scattered Seed and Conscious Discord, it’s wonderful to know that these Original Pheylonian Beeswax Candles are still being made by the same family, generation after generation, right here at Philoxia. Iilah and Tawlia Chickalo and their family have resided here at Philoxia for over 30 years while developing and maintaining a variety of businesses compatible with their Pheylonian Lifestyle. Philoxia itself is situated on one of North America’s Largest Ley Lines and registered tropical fens for a Northern Climate.”

Maintaining the teachings from both Iliah and Tawlia’s mothers, they create unique products that work extremely well.

Their candles are magical and the halo of light that emanates from them is truly golden. Even better, they are completely nontoxic and beautiful.

Loving their company and products, I turned to their Lip to Toe lip and body balm and was amazed to fi nd that one tube of extra luxurious beeswax and essential oils can take care of all the dry areas on my body, especially my lips, elbows and knees. Lip to Toe is made with 100 percent beeswax, natural emollients and essential oils including those of Jojoba, grape seed, olive and calendula. Made in small batches this ‘Original’ blend combines Lavender, Geranium and Rose essential oils which can balance and heal at cellular levels. Lip to Toe is a premium, full-body balm and works effectively on all areas that are dry or chapped.

As an active and busy person, I love the fact that this one product has so many uses. I do have to admit that I use it mostly on my lips to keep them protected from the sun, wind and surf. When I catch

sight of a dry knee or elbow I am all set. I just grab Lip to Toe and my elbows are instantly drenched in moisture and healing oils.

I keep some on my desk and use it all the time!

The Money Fix

Money, money, money. You know how to spend it. Maybe you know how to save or invest it. But do you know where money comes from and who controls it?

The Money Fix, a mind-blowing feature-length documentary answers these questions and more through its exploration of our society’s relationship with the green stuff. Written and produced by Alan Rosenblith, this groundbreaking fi lm’s cast includes activist Noam Chomsky, Lynne Twist, author of The Soul of Money, and Bernard Lietaer, the co-architect of the euro, to name a few.

So where does money come from? Most people, if they consider it at all, think that the government creates it. The Money Fix demystifi es the murky world of fi nance and economics, revealing that money is created by the banking system and it enters the economy as bank debt. This means that if you go into a bank to ask for a loan, every dollar you receive is someone else’s debt. In effect, money is actually created out of thin air.

What’s the big deal? Experts in The Money Fix explain that more money is owed to the bank than exists in circulation. This is arguably at the root of the pervasive sense of scarcity in our collective consciousness. The feeling of “not enough” goes beyond the material, seeping into the emotional and the spiritual, provoking us to accumulate more, more, more in a fear-driven cycle that seems to have no beginning and no end.

Until now. The Money Fix outlines solutions grounded in the strength of local communities, from local currency and community cooperatives known as mutual credit systems, to the commercial barter business, which totals $30 billion per year in trade which is not bad for a bottom line.

One of the best aspects of The Money Fix is the refreshing connection it makes between the economy and our ecosystem. Following the example set by nature, the fi lm provides a path for the world of fi nance to enter which is the compassionate realm of cooperation rather than competition.

The solutions are available now and The Money Fix delivers them through compelling narrative and well-researched historical accounts. This fi lm shows how we can effectively place value back into human life and nature, replacing the old paradigm of profi t above all else. It’s a return to the grassroots elements of exchanging goods and services so that we can realize our interconnectedness and the abundance we can create together.

For more information, visit themoneyfi x.org. The Money Fix will be one of the fi lms showing at The Green Lifestyle Film Festival March 19-21 at the James Bridges Theatre at the University of California, Los Angeles. Learn more about this international non-profi t event featuring fi lms, live music, entertainment, dancing, live food demos, and prizes at greenlifestylefi lmfestival.com. – EP

Guardians of BeingThe quirky, poetic, and playful images of MUTTS comic strip creator Patrick McDonnell lend themselves

perfectly to the stillness and presence of spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle’s words in Guardians of Being. The openness of space in this unique collection with its simple yet profound illustrations encourage readers to take in each page and just be. This book offers an opportunity for refl ection in the present moment that is central to Tolle’s teachings in The Power of Now and A New Earth.

Guardians of Being concentrates on the lessons that nature, and in particular, animals can teach us, if we would only stop and listen. For example, a quiet image of a dog gazing up at a night sky is accompanied by these words: “Give yourself completely to the act of listening. Beyond the sounds there is something greater: a sacredness that cannot be understood through thought.”

Our animal friends and companions can teach us a thing or two. Not only do they help us see our interconnectedness with this beautiful planet, but they refl ect the stillness and presence that we often lose when we identify solely with the chatter in our minds. Perpetually living in the past or worrying about the future denies us of the now, which is all that we ever have. Although this is a simple message, it is a profound one that permeates every page of Guardians of Being, inspiring us to remember that “nature can show us the way home, the way out of the prison of our own minds.”

Guardians of Being, words by Eckhart Tolle, art by Patrick McDonnell, $18, is available through NewWorldLibrary.com. For more information on the author and illustrator, please visit EckhartTolle.com and MuttsComics.com. – CC

believe? Are we looking from the eyes of Monet, who worshipped fuller women, or from Hollywood’s ideal of a skinny body?

The truth is that only two percent of women are naturally skinny like models. The rest come in different shapes, heights, and weights. The answer is that whatever shape we are, and whatever we look like, we need to accept ourselves fully. With this acceptance, something miraculous happens and you start radiating a light, a beauty, and a grace. Just as in nature, you will never see an ugly animal. They don’t have the capacity to judge themselves, or a desire to be anything different than what they are.

Self-hatred and self-judgment are only human phenomena and their effects are devastating on the body we perceive externally. The very seed of love, whether it is romantic or a higher agape state, starts with self-love of our own bodies. So, when you wake up in the morning, look at yourself naked. Be with your body without judging it. Tell your body, “I love you,” be thankful to your body, and really feel this love. Find time to take care of your body and indulge in pampering it. By doing this, your will start to see changes. Self-love is true body sculpting.

Getting up to leave, I asked if he needed a lift. Sam graciously accepted a ride to a cross-town bus stop. As I pulled over to the curb, he sighed.

“Can I tell you something personal?” he asked. I agreed, thinking he was going to tell me that he knew it was me who had almost hit him earlier that morning. But instead he took my hand between his, tattooing me with his stare.

“Michael, I am old, and you may think I don’t see much anymore, but when I look into your eyes, I see the eyes of one who can do anything. But, Michael, I also see one who is blind to all he has already done…” I withdrew my hand, brushing away his kind words. But he grabbed it again, continuing, “Michael, I see the eyes of one who can do anything he wants! ” He then kissed my hand three times and was gone.

I would like to say that in the intervening years since I saw Sam that hot summer morning, my life has been transformed. That his vision propelled me to fulfi ll the promise he saw in my eyes. But that would be a lie neither of us could tolerate. What I can say with complete assurance and eternal gratitude, however, is that ever since that day, when I stare into the morning mirror, every once in awhile I see a glimpse of what I imagine Sam saw that day. And for the briefest instant, I believe it, too.

1BOG’s model—from the launch of four-month long city programs, creation of homeowner communities and selection of a local partner installer—has proven to be beneficial on numerous fronts. It allows homeowners to buy affordable, hassle-free solar and lets installers sell solar systems without having to invest in marketing and outreach. By streamlining the solar buying process, 1BOG has the potential to drive exponential growth of residential solar adoption and tip the scales toward independence from nonrenewable resources.

In the most recent San Francisco Bay Area campaign, members had the unique opportunity to support a graduate of nonprofit Solar Richmond’s green-collar job training program, providing green-collar graduates with two days of hands-on training with 1BOG solar installations. This enabled us to apply our proven model for improving residential solar adoption to empower disadvantaged communities.

1BOG’s ultimate goal is to increase the adoption rate for solar and energy-efficiency improvements to boost people’s confidence in purchasing green, big-ticket items for their homes. This program is setting the record straight about solar power being an extravagant, unattainable home improvement—not only can getting solar be simple, but it can also save homeowners thousands of dollars in electricity bills. Once solar adoption reaches a critical mass of acceptance and the use of renewable energy sources becomes the norm, we will gain more control of our country’s long-standing reliance on coal, oil and gas. This will increase demand for renewable power sources, drive down costs of alternative energy and massively reduce the carbon footprint of residential homes.

We’ve found that if one household on a block purchases a visible solar system, their neighbors are more than 10 times as likely to follow suit. As we exercise the power of community, solar-powered homes will eventually transition from novelty to normalcy.

Dave Llorens is co-Founder and CEO of One Block Off the Grid (www.1bog.org). Prior to 1BOG, he founded solarpowerrocks.com, a reputable source for solar industry information. Contact him at [email protected] or 415.963.4339.

A miracle is an example of an open system. This subject is germane to everything I teach in Matrix Energetics. When you create and begin to embrace a consciousness model that allows you to transcend the limitations of your physical reality, you can tap into the physics of miracles.

If you have a tumor or condition, a disease, or whatever, it has the potential to be healed instantly. Transformation is a miraculous process that can transcend what you think of as the laws of physics. Here’s the point: Miracles operate outside your normal reference point for reality. They happen all the time, but we sometimes miss them because we habitually focus on what’s still the same—on what’s familiar and what we know and believe consciously. We would have a lot more miracles in our lives if we simply began to notice what is different or new!

This article has been excerpted from The Physics of Miracles: Tapping Into the Field of Consciousness Potential, by Richard Bartlett, DC, ND, Atria Books/Beyond Words Publishing, beyondword.com. Dr. Bartlett holds degrees in chiropractic and naturopathy. After discovering his own extraordinary healing capabilities, he created Matrix Energetics as a system for helping others access their untapped potential. Learn more about how to transform your life through his national workshops and seminars at matrixenergetics.com.

I live on the coast of Brittany, in France, where I was born in 1971. In 1990, when I was an art student in Paris, I tried soft pastels for the fi rst time. I was instantly seduced by their magic!

J e a n - F r a n ç o i s L e S a i n t I now exhibit in France with the “Société des Pastellistes de France” (French Pastel Society). When starting to work on a new pastel I have no single method. I may start with a sketch of outlines in sepia or I may apply colors directly and work with shapes both of the actual subject and of negative space. I might instead place light on a dark background and work from there. Often there is no conscious decision on how to proceed; the subject makes it self-evident. Peace of mind is essential to my creative process. I usually work at night when all is quiet. I believe I am trying to depict an ideal of inner peace and contemplation. I think of Huckleberry Finn, smoking his pipe on the bank of the Mississippi river, watching a steamboat passing by...For more information about the work of Jean-François Le Saint, visit http://jfl s.free.fr or jfl esaint.blogspot.com or e-mail jfl [email protected].

“A Conversation with Shari Arison” continued from page 21

everyone wants to be healthy and happy. People should do whatever it takes for them to be happy. You can be rich and unhappy and you can be poor and very happy. I don’t think that it is material wealth that makes us feel a certain way, either happy or sad.

It is the will to make a difference in your life that is essential. Some might call it believing in something. More so, it is about the will and the desire to bring yourself to a better place, whatever that may mean to you.

VM: Do you think those parts of our culture, based upon greed and selfi shness, are truly being transformed into benevolence and compassion?

SA: You cannot see the light of day, if you haven’t been through the darkness of night. In order to know or to choose [actions which are] good, you have to experience the opposite—the not-so-good. There are those extremes. And I think the world came to a place where people became more and more greedy, more and more manipulative, more and more caring about only material wealth and we can all see where this has gotten us. I don’t think, anymore, that we can take from each other and take from our resources and do it in a way that isn’t caring about the results upon each other and our environment. We have seen the effects of these behaviors and people are beginning to understand that we need to act differently.

VM: In your book, Birth, you had a teacher who asked you where you see yourself in twenty years and I will ask the same question: ‘Where do you see yourself in twenty years?’

SA: Wow! You know, it’s funny because years ago when I was asked that question, I couldn’t envision it. Today, however, I have come to a place where I truly live in the moment. I wanted to reach a place in my life where I was in the present, and to really be happy–that’s all I want now.

VM: If you could do anything in this New Year, what would it be?SA: Just to continue what I am doing—trying to make the world a better place,

in every way I can.I don’t see a world without compassion. I think that we should all understand

that we’re in this together. My son always says that if we’re in a rowboat and someone punches a whole in it, then we are all going to drown. On the other hand, if everyone pitches in and helps push the oars in the same direction, then we all get to where we need to be. This is how I see compassion—we need to understand that we are all in this together.

For more information on Arison’s book Birth visit www.phoenixbooksandaudio.com. Arison has also created a “Good Deeds Day” scheduled for March 16th in Israel. This is for anyone who wants to do a good deed that day. The celebration of “Good Deeds Day” is just before Passover. It is a day to stop and think, “What good deeds can I do today?” In Israel, it is very well known and more and more people are getting involved every year. This year, they are expanding the day to include the international community. Please join them. See www.arison.com for more information.
