Brief History of Jharkhand

Jharkhand share its history with Bihar and was

part of the great empires of Nandas, Mauryas,

Sungas and Guptas. In the 13th century, Raja

Jai Singh Deo of Orissa had declared himself

the ruler of Jharkhand. However, during the

medieval period, Jharkhand rarely enjoyed the

status of an independent state; rather it

swayed with the fortunes of Delhi, Jaunpur and

Bengal. For a long time, Jharkhand was

remained as a part of Bihar, but after Indian

independence, the demand for a separate

state of tribals started gaining momentum.

Jharkhand became a state under the Republic

of India on November 15, 2000 and now it is

poised for a great leap forward.

By simple logic,

Jharkhand should be

has some of India’s

poorest people as its

citizens. Employment

opportunities are few

and nearly 80% of the

population is

dependent on the

farm sector. But

Condition of Women in villages of Jharkhand

The overall situation in Jharkhand and Bihar is austere, but worst in the villages and especially for the women in these villages. They are socially neglected, have to accept a position of subservient to males and continue to be discriminated against; the sex ratio is skewed against them, the maternal mortality is high, many women are illiterate and crimes against women are on the rise.

• Jharkhand is a resource rich state with abundance of waterfalls, rivers, and huge coal beds. The state has an immense scope for mini, micro hydro power stations and non-conventional energy.

• 40 percent of country's production of Tussar, a non-mulberry silk comes from Jharkhand State alone. The state is planning to integrate horticulture, sericulture, agriculture and productions of Lac operations under its VISION 2010 plan. This will enable the state to produce 60 percent Tussar silk production. The centre Tussar Research and Training Institute is working well in this direction.

• Keeping aside the continuing political instability, hotel operators believe that destination Ranchi would soon be a hotspot for business growth.

• The food processing sector has immense potential for growth.
