FOREWORD HUMANRIGHTSONTRIALANDORGANISEDVOLUNTEERINGTheyear2016startedlikelastyearended.SeveralthousandpeoplefleeingfromwarandwithneedforsafetyarrivedattheGreekislands.Here,ourvolunteerswerepatrollingdayandnightintheareaswhichhadthemostarrivals.ADropintheOceanassistedrefugeesonLesvosandChios,andalsoKosandSamosforshorterperiodsearlierintheyear.WewitnessedseveralshipwrecksandmanydeathsintheAegeanSea.Dedicatedlong-termcoordinatorsincampsledtheworktogetherwithvolunteersfromtheadministrationinOslo.Thisapproachledtoestablishgoodroutinesforstructuredinterventions.AsenseofxenophobiagrewinEurope,andseveralcountriessecuredtheirbordersmakingitalmostimpossibleforrefugeestotravelbeyondGreece.InFebruarythechancesofcrossingtheborderbetweenGreeceandTheRepublicofMacedoniabecameevenslimmer.Suddenlyeveryone,regardlessofneed,waspreventedfrompassing.Theareasurroundingtheborderdevelopedintoanunofficialrefugeecampconsistingof18,000peoplewhohopedEuropewouldreachoutahelpinghand.ADropintheOceanarrivedatthisareaasoneofthefirstaidorganisations.Onadailybasis,wedistributedclothes,shoes,hygieneproductsandblankets,viaacaravan.

Onthe20thofMarchtheEUandTurkeymadeanagreementwheretheaimwasthatrefugeesshouldnotembarkonthedangeroustriptoGreeceacrossthesea,andthatthosewhomadeitshouldbereturnedtoTurkey.SecurityfromtheTurkishsidewasstrengthenedaswellasthearrivalstotheGreekislandsdecreased.Greecedidnotwanttoviolatethehumanrightsliketheagreementwouldentail.TheyemphasisedthatthroughtheRefugeeConventionallpeoplehavetherighttogettheirapplicationforprotectionconsidered,whichledtomostofthepeoplewhohadarrivedinGreeceapplyingforasylumhere.Withthesepoliticallycontrolledchanges,ADropintheOceanalsochangeditsaidwork.Frombeingoneoftheleadingcontributorsalongthebeacheswheretheboatscamein,wegraduallystartedworkingintherefugeecamps,wheretheneedsoftherefugeesincreased.AtChiosinApril2016wetooktheinitiativeofpurchasinganddistributingbreakfastintheSoudacamp.ADropintheOceanestablishedawell-functioningdistributionsystem,whichledtousalsobeingresponsiblefortheothermeals.InGreece’slargestrefugeecamp,Skaramangas,wewerefromthestarttogetherwithseveraloftheotherlargeraidorganisations.Itwasthe‘small’Drop

intheOceanwhobuilttheCommunityCentre,agatheringplaceforthe3500inhabitants.Thecentrebecamequicklyapopularplaceforteaching,workshopsandclothesexchange.InadditiontotheCommunityCentreweopenedamother-babycentreinJuly,aplacewheremotherscouldcometobatheandbreastfeedtheirlittleonesinsafeandcalmsurroundings.InNorthernGreece,ourfirst‘Dropshop’wasbuilt.Thismarketworkslikeashopwheredistributionofnecessaryclothes,shoesandequipmenttakesplaceinadignifiedmanner,withoutlettingtherefugeesqueueforhours.Atthesametimeastheshopwasestablished,acoupleofvolunteersdevelopedanAppwhichkeepsagoodrecordoftheinventoryatthewarehouseandintheshop.ADropintheOceanhasthroughoutthewholeyearworkedtogetroutines,strategiesandjobdescriptionsinplaceinordertolaythefoundationfortheorganisation.Manyvolunteershaveputinalotofworktoensuretheflowofcoordinatingthevolunteersandtoestablishclearinstructionstovoluntary

aidworkers.In2016closeto2000volunteersfrom35countrieswereinvolvedwithADropintheOcean.Themajoritytookwiththemnewattitudes,lessxenophobiaandnewfriendships.ManyhavetravelledbacktoGreecetogivefurtherassistancethroughourorganisation.InMarchRegiAalstadtookoverasChairman,andinAprilTrudeJacobsenbecameemployedasGeneralSecretary.IntheSummerof2016wegotapprovalfrom“Innsamlingskontrollen”-astampofapprovalforusandsecurityforourdonors.Weareproudofwhatwehaveaccomplishedin2016,andseethatwehavemanybigtasksaheadofus.Thankstodonations,volunteerswhogiveoftheirtimeandknowledge,andbusinesseswhichcontributewiththeircompetence,2016hasenabledADropintheOceantotakemanystepsfurtherinthiswork.

THEREFUGEESITUATIONINGREECE

Therearearound62.000refugeesinGreece.Overhalfofthesearewomenandchildren.MostoftherefugeesarefromSyria,AfghanistanandIraq.TheasylumsysteminGreecehasnotbeenequippedforthelargeamountofrefugees.Manyarethereforestrandedin

temporaryrefugeecampsindifferentpartsofthecountry.Therefugeesoftenlackaccesstoimportantinformationandbasicservices,andmanyarestronglyaffectedbywhattheyhaveseenandexperiencedwhilefleeing.TheuncertaintythataffectstheeverydaylifeoftherefugeesinGreecehasagreatimpactontheiralreadyvulnerablementalstate.

TheagreementbetweenEUandTurkeyInMarch2016theEUandTurkeymadeanagreementtoendthecrossingbyseafromTurkeytoGreece.InexchangeforthreebillioneuroTurkeywouldnowstopmigrantswhowantedtocrossovertoEurope,aswellasprovideaidtothethreemillionrefugeesinthecountry.RefugeeswhoalreadyhadarrivedtoGreecewouldbereturnedtoTurkey,whileSyrianrefugeeswhowereinTurkeywouldbesettledintheEU.Oneyearaftertheagreementwassigned,lessthanthousandmigrantshavebeenreturnedtoTurkey.Outofthreemillion

SyrianrefugeesinTurkey,only3500havebeensettledintheEU.UNandseveralhumanitarianorganisationshavebeenconcernedthattheagreementcandenyrefugeestherighttoapplyforasylum.SincethesocalledBalkan-routewasalsocloseddowninMarch2016,Greecehasgonefrombeingatransitcountrytoacountrywhererefugeesnowresideforanindefiniteamountoftime.

HIGHLIGHTS2016wasayearwithmanyactivities,strongimpressions,andcontributionsfrommanypartieswhichhavelefttraces,bothamongthepeoplewhomwehavehelped,butalsoamongstthevolunteers.MothersandchildrenInordertolookaftermothersandchildren,ADropintheOceanhaswithsupportfromSeaofSolidarity,installedamotherandbabyfacilityintherefugeecampinSkaramangas.Theideaistoofferaplacewherenewmotherscanhaveafewminuteswithoutanyworries.Hereweofferacalmplacetobreastfeedandtobathethenewborns,withaccesstodiapers,sanitarytowelsandotheressentials.TheopeningofDropshopDropshop,themarketintherefugeecampNeaKavala,wasbuiltincooperationwithTheTimberProjectandHelpRefugees.HerecantheinhabitantsuseADropintheOcean’sowncurrency(Drops)tobuythenecessitiesforthemselvesandtheirfamilies.AdventcalendarfromChiosEverydayinDecemberupuntilChristmas,powerfulstoriesaboutrefugeeswerepresentedonourwebsiteandinsocialmedia.Thestorieswerewrittenbyourownvolunteers.AmongthosewhopresentedtheirstorywastheAfghan

coupleZaifarandRaihana,whowiththeirtwochildrenlivedinanunheatedtentintherefugeecampSouda.Theywerereallyconcernedthattheirchildrenwouldgetillinthebitingcold.Clown-doctorstoGreeceWehavetwicesentclown-doctorstoseveralrefugeecamps.Theprofessionalartistscontributetocreategoodexperiencesandpositivebreaksforchildrenandyouthinachallenginglifesituation.VisitonLindmo26thofNovembertheGeneralSecretaryTrudeJacobsenwasaguestonthetalkshowLindmoonNRK1.TheaimofvisitingAnneLindmowastosetfocusontheextremelydifficultsituationfortherefugeesinGreece.CommunityCentreInSkaramangasADropintheOceanbuiltacommunitycentre,agatheringplaceforthe3500inhabitantsinthecamp.Thecentreisusedforseveralthingslikeforexampleclothesexchange,teachingandvaccinationofchilderen.

PhotoexhibitionandauctionInDecemberaphotoexhibitionwasarrangedatBølgenogMoiinBriskeby.Manyofthecountry’sleadingphotographersdonatedtheirworktotheexhibitionand140.000NOKwasgiventoADropintheOceanfromtheauction.LocalinitiativesThelocalteamsbecameaveryimportantpartforaDropintheOceanin2016.Theyarrangedinformationmeetingsforfuturevolunteersandhadseveralfundraising

events.

MIGR2016-MigrationflowsinGreeceInAprilADropintheOceanwasinvitedtoAthensandtheInternationalConferenceMIGR2016MigrationflowsinGreece,whereGeneralSecretaryTrudeJacobsenwasoneoftheguestspeakers.OtherparticipantswhotookpartinthetwodayconferencewereSylviListhaug,UDIDirectorFrodeForfangandtheGreekMinisterPanagiotisKouroumplis,aswellasNorway’sAmbassadorinGreece,JørnGjelstad.

VOLUNTEERSANDCOOPERATIONWITHOTHERPARTIESADropintheOceanhasbetween60and70voluntaryaidworkersonaconsistentbasis.In2016wehadintotal2000volunteersfrom35differentcountries.ThevolunteersoftenbecomeawareofourworkthroughrecommendationsfrompreviousvolunteerswhohavecontributedthroughADropintheOcean.SocialmediaisanimportantchanneltospreadinformationaboutourworkandtheexperiencesofworkingatarefugeecampinGreece.Thisiswheretheexperiencesaresharedanditisalsothroughthesechannelsthattheinformationisgiventothoseatcamp. Weintroducedalowerlimitof25yearstobeallowedtocontributeinthecamps.Thiswascreatedaswewantedourvolunteerstobeadults,butalsobecauseofthestrongimpressionsthevoluntaryworkmaybringalong,whichcanbeeasiertoabsorbwhenyouhaveabitmorelifeexperience.Therefugeesthemselvestakealsopartinourvoluntarywork,asinterpretersandinstructorsfordifferentworkshops.We

considerthisasanimportantpartofourwork,asfeelingusefulissomethingallpeoplehaveaneedfor.Intherefugeecampswecooperatecloselywithmanyotherparties.SomeofthesearetheUNRefugeeAgency(UNHCR),TheNorwegianRefugeeCouncil,DRC,HellenicRedCross,WeAreHere,SamaritansPursueandSavetheChildren.Inadditiontothis,wecollaboratewithexternalpartnerslikeHelpRefugees,TheTimberProject,TheClownDoctorsandothers.Thesecooperationsareimmenselyimportantinthecamps,andwecanseethatwherethisworkswell,ithasalsoapositiveimpactontheinhabitantsinthecamps.In2016wehavealsohadseveralprojectstogetherwithcompaniesinNorway.OfthesewecanmentionCapraConsulting,whomwiththehelpfromstudentsfromNTNUdevelopedanewsolutionforregisteringvolunteeraidworkers,andalsoacompletelynewwebsite.AthreemonthprojectwasalsocompletedwiththeProsperaTrustwhichhandledfinancialmanagementandroutines.

ADMINISTRATION ADropintheOceanwasrunasa100%voluntaryorganisationupuntilApril2016.ThenfounderTrudeJacobsenbecameemployedfulltimeastheGeneralSecretary.InJuneBirgitHjelmtvedtgota50%positionasHR-andEmergencyManager.Shehadalsobeeninvolvedsinceautumn2015workingonavoluntarybasis.Theotherrolesintheorganisation

havebeenhandledbyvolunteers.Intotal,wehavebetween18to24peoplewhohavebeenworkingwithadministrativeduties,bothfromourHeadOfficeinSkøyenandaroundthecountry.In2016,10localteamswereestablishedtoarrangeinformationmeeting,standsandlocalfundraisingevents

ANNUALREPORT2016 ThenatureofthebusinessanditslocationADropintheOceanisahumanitarianorganisationwithitsHeadOfficeatSkøyeninOslo.Theaimoftheorganisationistoaidrefugees,withthemainaimofhelpingchildrenandtheirmothers.TheorganisationworksbycoordinatingvolunteeraidworkersinGreece,andalsobycollectingnecessaryequipmentandfinancialsupportasmeansofhelpingrefugeesarrivingEurope.Aidisreachedboththroughowninitiativesandbycooperationwithotherorganisations.In2016theorganisationcontributedin10differentrefugeecampsandonthemainland.ADropintheOceanalsocoordinatedvolunteerswhohadanimportantroleintherescueoperationsalongthecoastoftheGreekislands.

ContinuedoperationsThefinancialstatementsfor2016havebeenpreparedonthebasisofcontinuedoperations.Itisherebyconfirmedthattheassumptionofcontinuedoperationsispresent.

WorkingenvironmentTheboardstatesthattheworkingenvironmentintheorganisationissatisfactory.Therehavebeennoinjuriesoraccidentsin2016.Absenceduetoillnesshasbeen0days,whichmakeup0%.

EqualityTheorganisationhasin2016hadonefulltimeemployeefrom04.04.16andoneparttimeemployeefrom01.06.16.Bothofthesearewomen.Inadditionthereisalotofvoluntaryworkcarriedout,bothinthecampsandadministratively.Intotalourvolunteersconsistofabout70%womenand30%men.Theboardismadeupof2menand2women.Basedonanassessmentofthenumberofemployeesandjobcategories,theBoardhasnotfounditnecessarytoimplementspecialmeasuresregardingequality.EnvironmentTheorganisationdoesnotpollutetheexternalenvironment.
